ABSTRACT

Platinum-based metal catalysts are considered excellent converters in various catalytic reactions, particularly in fuel cell applications. The atomic structure at the nanocrystal surface and the metal interface both influence the catalytic performance, controlling the efficiency of the electrochemical reactions. Here we report the synthesis of Ag/Pt and Ag/Pd core/shell nanocrystals and insight into the formation mechanism of these bimetallic core/shell nanocrystals when undergoing oxygen plasma treatment. We carefully designed the oxidation treatment that determines the structural and compositional evolution. The accelerated oxidation-triggered diffusion of Ag toward the outer metal shell leads to the Kirkendall effect. After prolonged oxygen plasma treatment, most core/shell nanocrystals evolve into hollow spheres. At the same time, a minor fraction of the metal remains unchanged with a well-protected Ag core and a monocrystalline Pt or Pd shell. We hypothesize that the O2 plasma disturbs the Pt or Pd shell surface and introduces active O species that react with the diffused Ag from the inside out. Based on EDX elemental mapping, combined with several electron microscopic techniques, we deduced the formation mechanism of the hollow structures to be as follows: (I) the oxidation of Ag within the Pt or Pd lattice causes a disrupted crystal lattice of Pt or Pd; (II) nanochannels arise at the defect locations on the Pt or Pd shell; (III) the remaining Ag atoms pass through these nanochannels and leave a hollow crystal behind. Our findings deepen the understanding of interface dynamics of bimetallic nanostructured catalysts under an oxidative environment and unveil an alternative approach for catalyst pretreatment.

ABSTRACT

An increased number of healthcare providers across the continuum of care share responsibility for providing treatment and care to the patient. Treatment is often provided at community-based facilities and not necessarily at the hospital that performed the imaging. As a result, there is an increased dependency on readily available access to a patient's longitudinal imaging records. The ways in which diagnostic images and results are exchanged among providers within a patient's circle of care have expanded. This article explores three varieties of image exchange. First, we examine image exchange patterns within a regional Diagnostic Imaging Repository and identify missed sharing opportunities. Secondly, we explore the use of a regional clinical viewer widely used in southwestern Ontario, called ClinicalConnect™, and examine the adoption of the viewer by providers. Finally, the paper provides a high-level look at how patients can leverage patient portals to view their imaging data to empower their healthcare experience.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the CIELab colour, water holding capacity, texture and oxidative stability of sheep meat from different breeds, finishing feeds, and retail packaging methods. Leg primal cuts from a subset of Composite wether lambs (n = 21) and Merino wether yearlings (n = 21) finished on a standard diet containing grain and cereal hay, a standard diet with camelina forage, or a standard diet with camelina meal, were used in this study. Semimembranosus and Vastus lateralis were packaged in vacuum skin packaging (VSP), or modified atmosphere packaging with 80% O2 and 20% CO2 (HioxMAP), or with 50% O2, 30% N2, and 20% CO2 (TrigasMAP). Packaging had a greater effect (p < 0.001) on L*, a*, b*, hue, and chroma than the effects from breed and finishing feed. Purge loss was affected by packaging. Cooking loss was affected by breed for Semimembranosus and packaging for both muscle types. HioxMAP and TrigasMAP increased WBSF and Texture Profile Analysis hardness of the meat compared to VSP. Lipid oxidation, assessed by TBARS, were lower in camelina forage or camelina meal supplemented diets and TrigasMAP compared to standard diet and HioxMAP, respectively. Total carbonyl and free thiol content were lower in VSP. Thus, supplementing feed with camelina forage or meal and lowering oxygen content in retail packaging by TrigasMAP or VSP are recommended to ensure optimal sheep meat quality.

ABSTRACT

In order to successfully share patient data across multiple systems, a reliable method of linking patient records across disparate organizations is required. In Canada, within the province of Ontario, there are four centralized diagnostic imaging repositories (DIRs) that allow multiple hospitals and independent health facilities (IHF) to send diagnostic images and reports for the purpose of sharing patient data across the region (Nagels et al. J Digit Imaging 28: 188, 2015). In 2017, the opportunity to consolidate the two regional DIRs that share the south-central and southeast area of the province was reviewed. The two DIRs use two different methods for patient matching. One uses a deterministic match based on one specific value, while the other uses a probabilistic scorecard that weighs a variety of patient demographics to assess if the patients are a match. An analysis was conducted to measure how a patient identity domain that uses a deterministic approach would compare to the accepted "standard." The intention is to review the analysis as a means of identifying interesting insights in both approaches. For the purpose of this paper, the two DIRs will be referred to as DIR1 and DIR2.

ABSTRACT

Graphene and its derivatives are emerging as a class of novel but versatile templates for the controlled preparation and functionalization of materials. In this paper a conceptual review on graphene-based templates is given, highlighting their versatile roles in materials preparation. Graphene is capable of acting as a low-dimensional hard template, where its two-dimensional morphology directs the formation of novel nanostructures. Graphene oxide and other functionalized graphenes are amphiphilic and may be seen as soft templates for formatting the growth or inducing the controlled assembly of nanostructures. In addition, nanospaces in restacked graphene can be used for confining the growth of sheet-like nanostructures, and assemblies of interlinked graphenes can behave either as skeletons for the formation of composite materials or as sacrificial templates for novel materials with a controlled network structure. In summary, flexible graphene and its derivatives together with an increasing number of assembled structures show great potentials as templates for materials production. Many challenges remain, for example precise structural control of such novel templates and the removal of the non-functional remaining templates.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrated dissipative soliton obtained from a graphene oxide mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser, which operated in normal dispersion cavity by employing the dispersion compensation fiber. The highly chirped pulses at the repetition rate of 19.5 MHz can be compressed from 11 ps to 542 fs by using single mode fiber. Numerical simulations were in good agreement with the experimental results. The hydrophilic graphene oxide with easier fabrication shows great potential to be a novel low-cost saturable absorber in reliable and compact mode-locked fiber laser system.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrated the femtosecond erbium-doped all-fiber lasers mode-locked with graphene oxide, which can be conveniently obtained from natural graphite by simple oxidation and ultra-sonication process. With proper dispersion management in an all-fiber ring cavity, the laser directly generated 200 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 22.9 MHz and the average output power was 5.8 mW. With the variation of net cavity dispersion, output pulses with pulse width of 0.2~3 ps were obtained at a repetition rate of 22.9~0.93 MHz. These results are comparable with those of graphene saturable absorbers and the superiority of easy fabrication and hydrophilic property of graphene oxide will facilitate its potential applications for ultrafast photonics.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate stable 70 ns pulse generation from a Yb-doped fiber laser passively Q-switched by a graphene-based saturable absorber mirror in a short linear cavity. The maximum output power was 12 mW and the highest single pulse energy was 46 nJ. The repetition rate of the fiber laser can be widely tuned from 140 to 257 kHz along with the increase of the pump power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for passively Q-switched sub-100-ns pulse operation of a graphene-based saturable absorber in a Yb-doped fiber laser.
