ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of iron deficiency has posed significant public health risks. Animal-derived collagen peptides have been recognized for their potent metal ion-chelating capabilities, which can greatly enhance the bioavailability of iron. Yak skins, typically discarded during production and processing, serve as a valuable resource. Based on yak skin collagen peptide (YSP), we have developed a novel iron-chelating peptide: yak skin collagen iron-chelating peptide (YSP-Fe). RESULTS: The maximum level of iron chelation of YSP-Fe achieved was 42.72 ± 0.65 mg g-1. Structural analysis indicated that YSP-Fe was primarily formed from amino, carboxyl and carbonyl groups combined with ferrous ions. Through examination of the amino acid composition, molecular docking and peptide sequence identification, it was determined that Gly, Asp and Arg played crucial roles in the chelation of ferrous ions by YSP. Furthermore, YSP-Fe was more stable in simulated gastrointestinal digestion compared to FeSO4. CONCLUSION: YSP-Fe demonstrated dual benefits of iron supplementation and antioxidant effects. These significant findings provide a foundation for the development of novel iron supplements and the effective utilization of yak skin as a valuable resource. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

MXene is investigated as an electrode material for different energy storage systems due to layered structures and metal-like electrical conductivity. Experimental results show MXenes possess excellent cycling performance as anode materials, especially at large current densities. However, the reversible capacity is relatively low, which is a significant barrier to meeting the demands of industrial applications. This work synthesizes N-doped graphene-like carbon (NGC) intercalated Ti3C2Tx (NGC-Ti3C2Tx) van der Waals heterostructure by an in situ method. The as-prepared NGC-Ti3C2Tx van der Waals heterostructure is employed as sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery electrodes. For sodium-ion batteries, a reversible specific capacity of 305 mAh g-1 is achieved at a specific current of 20 mA g-1, 2.3 times higher than that of Ti3C2Tx. For lithium-ion batteries, a reversible capacity of 400 mAh g-1 at a specific current of 20 mA g-1 is 1.5 times higher than that of Ti3C2Tx. Both sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries made from NGC-Ti3C2Tx shows high cycling stability. The theoretical calculations also verify the remarkable improvement in battery capacity within the NGC-Ti3C2O2 system, attributed to the additional adsorption of working ions at the edge states of NGC. This work offers an innovative way to synthesize a new van der Waals heterostructure and provides a new route to improve the electrochemical performance significantly.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Noninvasive and accurate biomarkers of neurologic Wilson disease (NWD), a rare inherited disorder, could reduce diagnostic error or delay. Excessive subcortical metal deposition seen on susceptibility imaging has suggested a characteristic pattern in NWD. With submillimeter spatial resolution and increased contrast, 7T susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) may enable better visualization of metal deposition in NWD. In this study, we sought to identify a distinctive metal deposition pattern in NWD using 7T SWI and investigate its diagnostic value and underlying pathophysiologic mechanism. METHODS: Patients with WD, healthy participants with monoallelic ATP7B variant(s) on a single chromosome, and health controls (HCs) were recruited. NWD and non-NWD (nNWD) were defined according to the presence or absence of neurologic symptoms during investigation. Patients with other diseases with comparable clinical or imaging manifestations, including early-onset Parkinson disease (EOPD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA), were additionally recruited and assessed for exploratory comparative analysis. All participants underwent 7T T1, T2, and high-resolution SWI scanning. Quantitative susceptibility mapping and principal component analysis were performed to illustrate metal distribution. RESULTS: We identified a linear signal intensity change consisting of a hyperintense strip at the lateral border of the globus pallidus in patients with NWD. We termed this feature "hyperintense globus pallidus rim sign." This feature was detected in 38 of 41 patients with NWD and was negative in all 31 nNWD patients, 15 patients with EOPD, 30 patients with MSA, 15 patients with PSP, and 12 patients with NBIA; 22 monoallelic ATP7B variant carriers; and 41 HC. Its sensitivity to differentiate between NWD and HC was 92.7%, and specificity was 100%. Severity of the hyperintense globus pallidus rim sign measured by a semiquantitative scale was positively correlated with neurologic severity (ρ = 0.682, 95% CI 0.467-0.821, p < 0.001). Patients with NWD showed increased susceptibility in the lenticular nucleus with high regional weights in the lateral globus pallidus and medial putamen. DISCUSSION: The hyperintense globus pallidus rim sign showed high sensitivity and excellent specificity for diagnosis and differential diagnosis of NWD. It is related to a special metal deposition pattern in the lenticular nucleus in NWD and can be considered as a novel neuroimaging biomarker of NWD. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: The study provides Class II evidence that the hyperintense globus pallidus rim sign on 7T SWI MRI can accurately diagnose neurologic WD.

ABSTRACT

In view of the suitability assessment of forest land resources, a consistent fuzzy assessment method with heterogeneous information is proposed. Firstly, some formulas for transforming large-scale real data and interval data into fuzzy numbers are provided. To derive the unified representation of multi-granularity linguistic assessment information, a fuzzy quantitative transformation for multi-granularity uncertain linguistic information is proposed. The proofs of the desirable properties and some normalized formulas for the trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are presented simultaneously. Next, the objective weight of each assessment indicator is further determined by calculating the Jaccard-Cosine similarity between the trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Moreover, the trapezoidal fuzzy numbers corresponding to the comprehensive assessment values of each alternative are obtained. The alternatives are effectively ranked according to the distance from the centroid of the trapezoidal fuzzy number to the origin. Finally, based on the proposed consistent fuzzy assessment method, the suitability assessment of forest land resources is achieved under a multi-source heterogeneous data setting.

ABSTRACT

The most challenging and time-consuming step in the free gingival graft (FGG) for keratinized mucosa augmentation is the compression suture anchoring the FGG to the periosteum. This article proposed a novel "microscrew with tie-down sutures" technique to anchor the FGG to the recipient site without the traditional trans-periosteum suture. This patient's keratinized mucosa width (KMW) around the healing abutments of teeth #29 and #30 was less than 1 mm. After an apically positioned flap (AFP) was prepared, 2 microscrews were placed at the buccal plate of the alveolar ridge bone, which is the coronal margin of the AFP. Then, the sutures winded between the microscrews and the healing abutments to anchor the FGG. In conclusion, the "microscrew with tie-down sutures" technique offers a feasible and straightforward alternative for the trans-periosteum compression suture, mainly when the periosteum is fragile, thin, or injured.

ABSTRACT

With heterogeneous catalysts, chemical promotion takes place at their surfaces. Even in the case of single-atom alloys, where small quantities of a reactive metal are dispersed within the main host, it is assumed that both elements are exposed and available to bond with the reactants. Here, we show, on the basis of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy data, that in alloy catalysts made from Pt highly diluted in Cu the Pt atoms are located at the inner interface between the metal nanoparticles and the silica support instead. Kinetic experiments indicated that these catalysts still display better selectivity for the hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols than the pure metals. Density functional theory calculations corroborated the stability of Pt at the metal-support interface and explained the catalytic performance as being due to a remote lowering of the activation barrier for the dissociation of H2 at Cu sites by the internal Pt atoms.

ABSTRACT

The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the three great plains in China and also serves as a vital region for grain, cotton, and oil production. Under the influence of regional hydrothermal changes, groundwater overexploitation, and seawater intrusion, the vegetation coverage is undergoing continuous alterations. However, a comprehensive assessment of impacts of precipitation, temperature, and groundwater on vegetation in marine sedimentary regions of the NCP is lacking. Heilonggang Basin (HB) is located in the low-lying plain area in the east of NCP, which is part of the NCP. In this study, the HB was chosen as a typical area of interest. We collected a series of data, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), precipitation, temperature, groundwater depth, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) from 2001 to 2020. Then the spatiotemporal variation in vegetation was analyzed, and the underlying driving mechanisms of vegetation variation were explored in this paper. The results show that NDVI experiences a rapid increase from 2001 to 2004, followed by stable fluctuations from 2004 to 2020. The vegetation in the HB has achieved an overall improvement in the past two decades, with 76% showing improvement, mainly in the central and eastern areas, and 24% exhibiting deterioration in other areas. From 2001 to 2020, NDVI correlates positively with precipitation, whereas its relationship with temperature fluctuates between positive and negative, and is not statistically significant. There is a threshold for the synergistic change of NDVI and groundwater depth. When the groundwater depth is lower than 3.8 m, NDVI increases sharply with groundwater depth. However, beyond this threshold, NDVI tends to stabilize and fluctuate. In the eastern coastal areas, NDVI exhibits a strong positive correlation with groundwater depth, influenced by the surface soil TDS controlled by groundwater depth. In the central regions, a strong negative correlation is observed, where NDVI is primarily impacted by soil moisture under the control of groundwater. In the west and south, a strong positive correlation exists, with NDVI primarily influenced by the intensity of groundwater exploitation. Thus, precipitation and groundwater are the primary driving forces behind the spatiotemporal variability of vegetation in the HB, while in contrast, the influence of temperature is uncertain. This study has elucidated the mechanism of vegetation response, providing a theoretical basis for mitigating adverse factors affecting vegetation growth and formulating rational water usage regulations in the NCP.

ABSTRACT

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has become a challenging problem in pig industry worldwide, causing significant profit losses. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) has been regarded as a safe probiotic strain and has been shown to exert protective effects on the intestinal dysfunction caused by PEDV. This study evaluated the effect of LGG on the gut health of lactating piglets challenged with PEDV. Fifteen piglets at 7 days of age were equally assigned into 3 groups (5 piglets per group): 1) control group (basal diet); 2) PEDV group: (basal diet + PEDV challenged); 3) LGG + PEDV group (basal diet + 3×109 CFU/pig/day LGG + PEDV). The trial lasted 11 days including 3 days of adaptation. The treatment with LGG was from D4 to D10. PEDV challenge was carried out on D8. PEDV infection disrupted the cell structure, undermined the integrity of the intestinal tract, and induced oxidative stress, and intestinal damage of piglets. Supplementation of LGG improved intestinal morphology, enhanced intestinal antioxidant capacity, and alleviated jejunal mucosal inflammation and lipid metabolism disorders in PEDV-infected piglets, which may be regulated by LGG by altering the expression of TNF signaling pathway, PPAR signaling pathway, and fat digestion and absorption pathway.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the impact of varying the part geometric complexity and 3D printing process setup on the resulting structural load bearing capacity of fiber composites. Three levels of geometric complexity are developed through 2.5D topology optimization, 3D topology optimization, and 3D topology optimization with directional material removal. The 3D topology optimization is performed with the SIMP method and accelerated by high-performance computing. The directional material removal is realized by incorporating the advection-diffusion partial differential equation-based filter to prevent interior void or undercut in certain directions. A set of 3D printing and mechanical performance tests are performed. It is interestingly found that, the printing direction affects significantly on the result performance and if subject to the uni direction, the load-bearing capacity increases from the 2.5D samples to the 3D samples with the increased complexity, but the load-bearing capacity further increases for the 3D simplified samples due to directional material removal. Hence, it is concluded that a restricted structural complexity is suitable for topology optimization of 3D-printed fiber composites, since large area cross-sections give more degrees of design freedom to the fiber path layout and also makes the inter-layer bond of the filaments firmer.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the learning in the implant dentistry hands-on course to that of the flipped classroom (FC) and the traditional lecture cohorts (control). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study,80 students were enrolled for the first time in an implant dentistry program. Subsequently, they were divided into two groups. The first, the FC group, which had free access to a video with a PowerPoint presentation on the Chaoxing-WHU-MOOC platform about the implant placement on first molar sites before class. The second, the control group, which attended a didactic lecture describing implant practice on the first molar site via a bidirectional multimedia interactive teaching demonstration and then operated on a simulation model. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and the deviation gauge were utilized to analyze the accuracy of the implant placement in the students' models. An online satisfaction questionnaire was distributed to both groups one week after the class. RESULTS: The linear deviation of the CBCT examination did not show any statistical difference between the two groups concerning cervical, apex, and angular. A significant buccal deviation was observed in the control group compared with the FC group (mean: 0.7436 mm vs. 0.2875 mm, p = 0.0035), according to the restoration-level deviation gauge. A total of 74.36% of students in the FC group placed implant within 0.5 mm buccal-to-lingual deviations, but only 41.03% of students in the control group reached within 0.5 mm buccal-to-lingual deviation ranges. Additionally, 91.67% of the students in the FC group and 97.5% of the students in the control group were satisfied with the practical implant class. CONCLUSION: FC was more effective than a didactic lecture for implant dentistry practical skill acquisition.

ABSTRACT

The recent widespread use of microplastics (MPs), especially in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), has caused significant water pollution. This study presents a UV/electrically co-facilitated activated persulfate (PS) system to co-degrade a typical microplastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and an organic sunscreen p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). We investigated the effect of various reaction conditions on the degradation. PVC and PABA degradation was 37% and 99.22%, respectively. Furthermore, we observed alterations in the surface topography and chemical characteristics of PVC throughout degradation. The possible degradation pathways of PVC and PABA were proposed by analyzing the intermediate products and the free radicals generated. This study reveals the co-promoting effect of multiple mechanisms in the activation by ultraviolet light and electricity.

ABSTRACT

The desire for healthy living has created a crucial need for portable flexible health-monitoring devices based on biomaterials. Toward this end, we report a microsphere-structured hydrogel that uses bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a dielectric layer for capacitive pressure sensors. We developed a theoretical model that describes how stacking dielectric layers of spheres affects the performance of capacitive sensors. We also prepared a prototype sensor featuring the unique microsphere structure to create capacitive sensors with high sensitivity (360.91 strain sensitivity), excellent cyclical stability, and a long service life (over 5000 stretching-compression cycles). Furthermore, the design of the hydrogel sensor allows for easy integration into fabrics to create devices such as smart wristbands, which can collect a diverse range of health data. Thus, BSA-hydrogel-based sensors not only provide safe wearable devices but also advance the performance of high-sensitivity capacitive sensors.

ABSTRACT

Brain-computer interface (BCI) for motor imagery is an advanced technology used in the field of medical rehabilitation. However, due to the poor accuracy of electroencephalogram feature classification, BCI systems often misrecognize user commands. Although many state-of-the-art feature selection methods aim to enhance classification accuracy, they usually overlook the interrelationships between individual features, indirectly impacting the accuracy of feature classification. To overcome this issue, we propose an adaptive feature learning model that employs a Riemannian geometric approach to generate a feature matrix from electroencephalogram signals, serving as the model's input. By integrating the enhanced adaptive L1 penalty and weighted fusion penalty into the sparse learning model, we select the most informative features from the matrix. Specifically, we measure the importance of features using mutual information and introduce an adaptive weight construction strategy to penalize regression coefficients corresponding to each variable adaptively. Moreover, the weighted fusion penalty balances weight differences among correlated variables, reducing the model's overreliance on specific variables and enhancing accuracy. The performance of the proposed method was validated on BCI Competition IV datasets IIa and IIb using the support vector machine. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed model compared to the existing models.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence factors of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) negative results in the diagnosed patients with spinal infection. mNGS test was applied in a cohort of 114 patients with suspected spinal infection, among which 56 patients had a final diagnosis of spinal infection. mNGS achieved a sensitivity of 75.0% (95% CI, 61.6% to 85.6%) and a specificity of 84.5% (95% CI, 72.6% to 92.7%), using histopathology and culture results as reference. Diagnosed patients with a negative culture result had lower white blood cell account, percentage of neutrophilic granulocyte, C-reactive protein (all P<0.05) and relatively higher rate of prior antimicrobial treatment history (P=0.059). However, diagnosed patients with a negative mNGS result did not have such difference with mNGS-positive patients, suggesting that mNGS was not strictly limited by the above indicators, which presented the advantages of this technique from another point of view.

ABSTRACT

Asymptomatic Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 Gene (LRRK2) carriers are at risk for developing Parkinson's disease (PD). We studied presymptomatic substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) regional neurodegeneration in asymptomatic LRRK2 carriers compared to idiopathic PD patients using neuromelanin-sensitive MRI technique (NM-MRI). Fifteen asymptomatic LRRK2 carriers, 22 idiopathic PD patients, and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were scanned using NM-MRI. We computed volume and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) derived from the whole SNc and the sensorimotor, associative, and limbic SNc regions. An analysis of covariance was performed to explore the differences of whole and regional NM-MRI values among the groups while controlling the effect of age and sex. In whole SNc, LRRK2 had significantly lower CNR than HCs but non-significantly higher volume and CNR than PD patients, and PD patients significantly lower volume and CNR compared to HCs. Inside SNc regions, there were significant group effects for CNR in all regions and for volumes in the associative region, with a trend in the sensorimotor region but no significant changes in the limbic region. PD had reduced volume and CNR in all regions compared to HCs. Asymptomatic LRRK2 carriers showed globally decreased SNc volume and CNR suggesting early nigral neurodegeneration in these subjects at risk of developing PD.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have found that ferroptosis plays an important role in a variety of neurological diseases. However, the precise role of ferroptosis in the multiple sclerosis patients remains uncertain. We defined and validated a computational metric of ferroptosis levels. The ferroptosis scores were computed using the AUCell method, which reflects the enrichment scores of ferroptosis-related genes through gene ranking. The reliability of the ferroptosis score was assessed using various methods, involving cells induced to undergo ferroptosis by six different ferroptosis inducers. Through a comprehensive approach integrating snRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, and spatial proteomics data, we explored the role of ferroptosis in multiple sclerosis. Our findings revealed that among seven sampling regions of different white matter lesions, the edges of active lesions exhibited the highest ferroptosis score, which was associated with activation of the phagocyte system. Remyelination lesions exhibit the lowest ferroptosis score. In the cortex, ferroptosis score were elevated in neurons, relevant to a variety of neurodegenerative disease-related pathways. Spatial transcriptomics demonstrated a significant co-localization among ferroptosis score, neurodegeneration and microglia, which was verified by spatial proteomics. Furthermore, we established a diagnostic model of multiple sclerosis based on 24 ferroptosis-related genes in the peripheral blood. Ferroptosis might exhibits a dual role in the context of multiple sclerosis, relevant to both neuroimmunity and neurodegeneration, thereby presenting a promising and novel therapeutic target. Ferroptosis-related genes in the blood that could potentially serve as diagnostic and prognostic markers for multiple sclerosis.

ABSTRACT

Cordyceps cicadae, as a new food ingredient, is a valuable edible and medicinal fungi. However, its resources are severely depleted due to environmental limitations and excessive harvesting practices. N6-(2-hydroxyethyl) adenosine (HEA), as an important product of Cordyceps cicadae, has the potential to be used in medical industry due to its diverse disease curing potential. However, the disclosure of HEA synthesis still severely limited its application until now. In this study, the kinetic curves for adenosine and HEA under shaker fermentation were explored. The kinetics of HEA and adenosine production exhibited a competitive pattern, implicating a possibility of sharing a same step during their synthesis. Due to HEA as a derivative of nitrogen metabolism, the effect of different nitrogen sources (peptone, yeast extract, ammonium sulfate, diammonium oxalate monohydrate, ammonium citrate dibasic, and ammonium citrate tribasic) on HEA production in Cordyceps cicadae strain AH 10-4 had been explored under different incubation conditions (shaker fermentation, stationary fermentation, and submerged fermentation). Our results indicated that the complex organic nitrogen sources were found to improve the accumulation of HEA content under shaker fermentation. In contrast, the optimal nitrogen source for the accumulation of HEA under stationary fermentation and submerged fermentation was ammonium citrate tribasic. But submerged fermentation obviously shortened the incubation time and had a comparable capacity of HEA accumulation by 2.578 mg/g compared with stationary fermentation of 2.535 mg/g, implicating a possibility of scaled-up production of HEA in industry by submerged fermentation. Based on the dramatic HEA production by ammonium sulfate as nitrogen resources between stationary and shaker fermentations, alanine, aspartate and glutamate as well as arginine metabolic pathway were related to the production of HEA by comparative transcriptome. Further investigation indicated that glutamic acid, which is an analog of Asp, showed an optimum production of HEA in comparison with other amino acids.

ABSTRACT

The development of distinct dendritic cell (DC) subsets, namely, plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) and conventional DC subsets (cDC1s and cDC2s), is controlled by specific transcription factors. IRF8 is essential for the fate specification of cDC1s. However, how the expression of Irf8 is regulated is not fully understood. In this study, we identified TRIM33 as a critical regulator of DC differentiation and maintenance. TRIM33 deletion in Trim33fl/fl Cre-ERT2 mice significantly impaired DC differentiation from hematopoietic progenitors at different developmental stages. TRIM33 deficiency downregulated the expression of multiple genes associated with DC differentiation in these progenitors. TRIM33 promoted the transcription of Irf8 to facilitate the differentiation of cDC1s by maintaining adequate CDK9 and Ser2 phosphorylated RNA polymerase II (S2 Pol II) levels at Irf8 gene sites. Moreover, TRIM33 prevented the apoptosis of DCs and progenitors by directly suppressing the PU.1-mediated transcription of Bcl2l11, thereby maintaining DC homeostasis. Taken together, our findings identified TRIM33 as a novel and crucial regulator of DC differentiation and maintenance through the modulation of Irf8 and Bcl2l11 expression. The finding that TRIM33 functions as a critical regulator of both DC differentiation and survival provides potential benefits for devising DC-based immune interventions and therapies.

We investigated the photocatalytic property of etched iron­aluminum layered double hydroxide (LDH) composites using urea-modified biochar (N-BC) carrier to degrade para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), a refractory organic pollutant. The prepared FeAl-LDH@FeSx-N-BC composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance, attributed to the enhanced photogenerated charge-carrier separation by the etched LDH and the improved comparative surface areas by the doped N-BC. The composite photocatalytically degraded 96 % of PABA. The performance was affected by solute concentration, pH and photocatalyst dose. Adding p-benzoquinone and EDTA-2Na significantly decreased the degradation rate, suggesting that superoxide radicals and holes were co-involved in PABA degradation. The excellent PABA removal efficiency was consistent for three consecutive runs. The samples' reactive oxygen species was confirmed, as electron paramagnetic reverberation explained the photodegradation mechanism. Under xenon lamp irradiation, two PABA photocatalytic degradation pathways were proposed using Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (LCMS) and density functional theory. As expected, FeAl-LDH@FeSx-N-BC showed excellent photocatalytic performance, expanding a new direction and possibility for future photocatalytic treatment of water pollutants.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To address the instability in implant surgical guides, this technique proposes an alternative anchoring mechanism in the stackable metal surgical guides utilizing cone-wedge anchors for improved stability. METHODS: Postoperative implant position superimposed onto the preoperatively planned design using Mimics Medical 21.0 and Materialise Magics 24.0 to assess 3D coronal implant deviation, 3D apical implant deviation, and implant angular deviation. RESULTS: Postoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed a high level of precision in the implant placement, with an average 0.97 mm deviation at implant coronal region, 1.56 mm at implant apexes, and 2.95° angular deviation. CONCLUSION: This technique introduces a novel cone-wedge anchoring mechanism to enhance the stability of stackable metal surgical guide templates, addressing inherent instability issues. The utilization of this approach significantly improves the accuracy of implant placement procedures.
