ABSTRACT

Photodetectors are widely applied in modern industrial fields because they convert light energy into electrical signals. We propose a printable silver (Ag) paste electrode for a highly flexible metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) broadband visible light photodetector as a wearable and portable device. Single-crystal and surface-textured silicon substrates with thicknesses of 37.21 µm were fabricated using a wet etching process. Surface texturization on flexible Si substrates enhances the light-trapping effect and minimizes reflectance from the incident light, and the average reflectance is reduced by 16.3% with pyramid-like structures. In this study, semitransparent, conductive Ag paste electrodes were manufactured using a screen-printing with liquid-phase process to form a flexible MSM broadband visible light photodetector. The transmittance of the homemade Ag paste solution fell between 34.83% and 36.98% in the wavelength range of visible light, from 400 nm to 800 nm. The highest visible light photosensitivity was 1.75 × 104 at 19.5 W/m2. The photocurrents of the flexible MSM broadband visible light photodetector were slightly changed under concave and convex conditions, displaying stable and durable bending properties.

ABSTRACT

In recent decades, zebrafish have become an increasingly popular laboratory organism in several fields of research due to their ease of reproduction and rapid maturation. In particular, shoaling behavior has attracted the attention of many researchers. This article presents a fully printed robotic model used to sense and stimulate shoaling behavior in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Specifically, we exposed laboratory-fabricated replicated materials to critical acid/base/salt environments and evaluated the mechanical, optical, and surface properties after a three-month immersion period. Focusing on weatherability, these test samples maintained high tensile strength (~45 MPa) and relatively similar transmission (>85%T in the visible region), as determined by UV−vis/FTIR spectroscopy. Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology allowed printing of models with different sizes and appearances. We describe the sense of zebrafish responses to replicas of different sizes and reveal that replicas approximating the true zebrafish size (3 cm) are more attractive than larger replicas (5 cm). This observation suggests that larger replicas appear as predators to the zebrafish and cause fleeing behavior. In this study, we determined the weatherability of a high-transparency resin and used it to fabricate a fully printed driving device to induce shoaling by zebrafish. Finally, we demonstrate a weathering-resistant (for three months) 3D-printed decoy model with potential utility for future studies of outdoor shoaling behavior, and the result has the potential to replace the traditional metal frame devices used in outdoor experiments.

ABSTRACT

Early and accurate prediction of endotracheal tube (ETT) location is pivotal for critically ill patients. Automatic and timely detection of faulty ETT locations from chest X-ray images may avert patients' morbidity and mortality. Therefore, we designed convolutional neural network (CNN)-based algorithms to evaluate ETT position appropriateness relative to four detected key points, including tracheal tube end, carina, and left/right clavicular heads on chest radiographs. We estimated distances from the tube end to tracheal carina and the midpoint of clavicular heads. A DenseNet121 encoder transformed images into embedding features, and a CNN-based decoder generated the probability distributions. Based on four sets of tube-to-carina distance-dependent parameters (i.e., (i) 30-70 mm, (ii) 30-60 mm, (iii) 20-60 mm, and (iv) 20-55 mm), corresponding models were generated, and their accuracy was evaluated through the predicted L1 distance to ground-truth coordinates. Based on tube-to-carina and tube-to-clavicle distances, the highest sensitivity, and specificity of 92.85% and 84.62% respectively, were revealed for 20-55 mm. This implies that tube-to-carina distance between 20 and 55 mm is optimal for an AI-based key point appropriateness detection system and is empirically comparable to physicians' consensus.

Introduction: As a common phenomenon of workplace ostracism in corporate management, it is urgent to clarify how it affects employee well-being. Methods: Based on Conservation of Resource Theory, this study investigates the mechanisms of workplace ostracism on employee well-being and examines the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and the moderating role of team forgiveness climate by surveying 282 employees from 68 companies in mainland China. Results: The results show that (1) workplace ostracism negatively affects employee well-being; (2) emotional exhaustion plays a mediating role between workplace ostracism and employee well-being; (3) team forgiveness climate weakens the negative effect of workplace ostracism on emotional exhaustion and negatively moderates the indirect effect of workplace ostracism on employee well-being through emotional exhaustion. Discussion: It tries to provide theoretical basis and practical guidance for eliminating the negative effects of workplace ostracism and focusing on employee well-being.

ABSTRACT

Recycling counter-current chromatography (CCC) has been developed and widely used in preparative separation. Due to increasingly broader peaks with longer elution times, recycling elution must be stopped before a peak overlap occurs, resulting in the insufficient separation of target compounds. In this study, the concept of in situ concentration was proposed, and the corresponding technique was designed to compress the effluents with the reserved separation effect (peak resolution). By combining this technique with multi-stage recycling elution, a novel unlimited recycling CCC (URCCC) strategy was developed to overcome the recycling time limitation to improve the resolution. The URCCC strategy was successfully applied in the preparative separation of naturally occurring naphthaquinones, where the in situ concentration was used two times with three-stage recycling CCC elution. Finally, isobutyrylshikonin (1), ß, ß-dimethylacrylshikonin (2) and isovalerylshikonin (3) were separated with high resolutions (R1,2 = 1.38 and R2,3 = 1.26). A high yield of pure naphthaquinones was achieved (89.6%), and the purity of each exceeded 98%. In conclusion, the URCCC strategy can improve the recycling elution times until the target compounds achieve sufficient separation, which may enable a broader range of application in structurally related compounds separation, especially in natural product separation.

ABSTRACT

Out-of-plane wrinkling has a significant influence on the mechanical performance of composite laminates. Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the progressive failure behavior of fiber-reinforced composite laminates with out-of-plane wrinkle defects subjected to axial compression. To describe the material degradation, a three-dimensional elastoplastic damage model with four damage modes (i.e., fiber tensile failure, matrix failure, fiber kinking/splitting, and delamination) was developed based on the LaRC05 criterion. To improve the computational efficiency in searching for the fracture angle in the matrix failure analysis, a high-efficiency and robust modified algorithm that combines the golden section search method with an inverse interpolation based on an existing study is proposed. The elastoplastic damage model was implemented in the finite-element code Abaqus using a user-defined material subroutine in Abaqus/Explicit. The model was applied to the progressive failure analysis of IM7/8552 composite laminates with out-of-plane wrinkles subjected to axial compressive loading. The numerical results showed that the compressive strength prediction obtained by the elastoplastic damage model is more accurate than that derived with an elastic damage model. The present model can describe the nonlinearity of the laminate during the damage evolution and determine the correct damage locations, which are in good agreement with experimental observations. Furthermore, it was discovered that the plasticity effects should not be neglected in laminates with low wrinkle levels.

Salidroside possesses excellent anti-tumor activity in many types of malignant tumor. In present study, we focused on the effects of salidroside on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The viability of human HCC cells was assayed using MTT. Apoptosis in the cells and tissues samples were detected by Annexin V/PI or TUNEL staining assays. The levels of apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress related proteins were measured by western blotting analysis. We found salidroside significantly suppressed cell viability and promoted apoptosis in HCC cells. Salidroside could activate intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways, by increasing activities of caspase-3, caspase-8 and caspase-9, up-regulating levels of Bax, Cytochrome c and decreasing level of Bcl-2 in HepG2 cells. Moreover, it was found salidroside induced ER stress and increased expression of p-PERK, eIF2a, p-eIF2a, ATF-6 and CHOP in HepG2 cells. Interestingly, knockdown of CHOP impaired salidroside induced inhibitory effects on HepG2 cells, suggesting the important role of ER stress in cytotoxic effect of salidroside. Finally, we have confirmed salidroside induced ER stress and inhibited development of HepG2 in an xenograft mouse model. In conclusion, our data suggest salidroside inhibits viability and induces apoptosis of HCC both in vitro and vivo, and this effect is partially mediated by activation of ER stress.

ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional spiral plasmonic structures have emerged as a versatile approach to generate near-field vortex fields with tunable topological charges. We demonstrate here a far-field approach to observe the chiral second-harmonic generation (SHG) at designated visible wavelengths from a single plasmonic vortex metalens. This metalens comprises an Archimedean spiral slit fabricated on atomically flat aluminum epitaxial film, which allows for precise tuning of plasmonic resonances and subsequent transfer of two-dimensional materials on top of the spiral slit. The nonlinear optical measurements show a giant SHG circular dichroism. Furthermore, we have achieved an enhanced chiral SHG conversion efficiency (about an order of magnitude greater than the bare aluminum lens) from monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2)/aluminum metalens, which is designed at the C-exciton resonance of WS2. Since the C-exciton is not a valley exciton, the enhanced chiral SHG in this hybrid system originates from the plasmonic vortex field-enhanced SHG under the optical spin-orbit interaction.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies identified that phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) gene polymorphism might be associated with cerebral infarction or ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke in human populations. However, as yet, no meta-analysis has revealed any detailed association. We retrospectively reviewed studies regarding the relationship of PDE4D gene polymorphism with ischemic stroke (IS) published during the period January 2003 to September 2012. According to the inclusion criteria, 9 of 105 initial studies were included in the subsequent analysis. The PubMed, Embase and CNKI of China were searched to identify the relevant studies. A total of 186 young patients with IS were included for the meta-analysis and 232 matched control subjects were enrolled and results were presented. The association of PDE4D gene polymorphism with IS in various populations was examined. The results suggested that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), SNP 83 in PDE4D gene was significantly related with susceptibility to IS. The meta-analysis also showed that PDE4D gene was associated with an enhanced risk of IS. The meta-analysis suggested that PDE4D SNP 87 constitutes an independent risk factor for IS development. To the best of our knowledge, the present meta-analysis reveals a number of possible associations between PDE4D gene polymorphism and IS.

·AIM: To evaluate the effect of bupivacaine in non-catheter infiltration anesthesia during vitretomy operation.·METHODS:Fifty-eight patients (58 eyes) with vitreous retinal surgery were selected. Patients were randomly divided into observation group ( 28 eyes ) and control group ( 30 eyes ) . The observation group were received non-catheter infiltration anesthesia. The control group were received traditional Sub- Tenon's block ( STB ) . Degree of pain, basic vital signs, the duration of anesthesia and analgesia grade were recorded and compared between two groups.·RESULTS: No significant difference was found in the 11-point numeric rating scale ( NRS - 11 scoring ) of anesthesia process, sclera incision, intraocular operation and the end of operation between two groups (P>0. 05). The difference were not significant in heart rate and blood pressure between two groups(P>0. 05). There was statistically significant difference in the duration of anesthesia between two groups (P<0. 05).·CONCLUSION: Both groups can provide the same anesthetic effect. Compared to STB, non - catheter infiltration anesthesia takes short time, and it is a safe and effective anesthesia methods. In addition, compare to the mixture of bupivacaine and lidocaine injection, bupivacaine injection can provide the same anesthetic effect.

ABSTRACT

Peniciside, a new fernene triterpenoid glycoside, was isolated from the EtOAc extract of the solid-state fermented rice culture of the fungus Penicillium sp. 169. Its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configuration was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis and chemical methods. Peniciside is the first example of a fernene triterpenoid glycoside with two hydroxyls at C-19 and C-20.

ABSTRACT

The toxicity of nanostructured materials and nanoparticles are very important considerations for many nanotechnology applications. Iron nanowires (NWs), as useful magnetic nanomaterials, may be good candidates for several biomedical applications. Here Fe NWs with an average diameter of about 50 nm were prepared by electrodeposition within the nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates, and characterized by using scanning electron microcopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The cytotoxicity of the Fe NWs was studied at cell level. Specifically, the influence of concentration and size on the cytotoxicity of Fe NWs to HeLa cells was evaluated by MTT assay combined with direct morphology observations by TEM and phase contrast microscopy. The results clearly showed that the presence of Fe NWs had no significant effect on the cell proliferation and cell viability, even the HeLa cells exposed to Fe NWs at the high concentration of 10,000 per cell for 72 h still showed high cell viability of about 80%. From phase contrast microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and TEM observations, it was found that Fe NWs were indeed internalized by HeLa cells. The cellular uptake process and results of Fe NWs demonstrated that as-prepared Fe NWs had not only a good biocompatibility but also a very low cytotoxicity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Siglec-1 has long been considered as an important biomarker of the activation of monocyte/macrophage and a type I interferon-specific imprint, but its role in atherosclerosis has not been elucidated. METHODS: We examined the expression of Siglec-1 by flow cytometry and RT-PCR in 83 CAD patients and 38 healthy controls. In addition, the levels of serum lipids, Gensini score, hs-CRP and homocysteine were determined. RESULTS: The transcriptional and protein levels of Siglec-1 on monocytes in CAD patients were significantly increased compared with healthy controls [3.17 versus 1.0, P<0.01; (11.5+/-3.9)% versus (1.8+/-2.0)%, P<0.01], but the increased Siglec-1 had no correlation with the level of native serum lipids. Interestingly, the expression of Siglec-1 was positively correlated with Gensini score (r=0.338, P=0.015), hs-CRP (r=0.316, P=0.016) and homocysteine level (r=0.224, P=0.042). CONCLUSION: Siglec-1 may be considered as a potential non-invasive indicator for monitoring disease severity and a biomarker for predicting the relative risk of cardiovascular events.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics of morphology, immunophenotype and cytogenetics (MIC) of myeloid surface antigen-expressing acute lymphoblastic leukemia (My+ ALL). METHODS: One hundred and twenty untreated acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients were diagnosed by standard bone marrow smear morphologic analysis and peroxidase staining. Flow cytometry and myeloid monoclonal antibodies (McAb) were used to analyze immunophenotype. Chromosome karyotypes were analyzed by R-band technique. RESULTS: Of 120 cases, 66 (55%) were My+ ALL, including 50 cases of My+ B-ALL (56.8% of B-ALL ), 14 cases of My T-ALL (50% of T-ALL) and 2 cases of My+ T and B-ALL (50% of T and BALL). Of 66 My+ ALL, 10 cases (15.1%) were misdiagnosed as acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia (ANLL), the other 54 My- ALL cases were correctly diagnosed. The inconsistent rate between morphological and immunophenotype classifications was higher in My+ ALL than in My- ALL , and there were more atypical morphology cases in My+ ALL than in My- ALL (P < 0.01). In My+ ALL cases 95.5% expressed CD13, 81.8% CD33, 77.3% CD13 and CD33 simultaneously, and 1.5% CD117, but none CD14, CD15 and MPO. CD34 expression rate in My+ ALL cases was significantly higher than that in My- ALL (P < 0.01 ). Cytogenetic abnormalities rates in My+ ALL and My- ALL were 72.3% and 66.7% (P > 0.05) respectively. t(9;22) and t(9;22) plus other cytogenetic abnormalities were detected more frequently in My+ LL cases than in My- B-ALL (P < 0. 01), and not in My+ T-ALL and My- T-ALL cases. The complete remission (CR) rates was 83.9% in My+ ALL and 79% in My- ALL(P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: My+ ALL had a specific characteristics in morphology, immunophenotype and cytogenetics. Some cases have a myeloid morphologic appearance and might be misdiagnosed as acute myeloid leukemia (AML). My+ ALL have a higher CD34 expression rate than My- ALL. t(9;22) abnormality was more frequently observed in My B-ALL than in My- B-ALL. There was no significant difference in CR rate between My+ ALL and My- ALL.
