ABSTRACT

Severe Graves' ophthalmopathy has been treated in 44 cases by orbital irradiation. 36 out of 37 patients showed a good response or a suspend of the progressive disease. In 17 out of 33 primary irradiations a dose of 10 Gy and in 16 cases a dose of 16 Gy was applied. Measured by ophthalmopathy-index significant better results have been achieved by a total dose of 16 Gy. Because of recurrence after primary irradiation of 10 Gy a re-irradiation became necessary in 35% of the cases. Primary irradiation of 16 Gy has required no further treatment during the same time of observation. A single series of 16 Gy irradiation has shown better results than two series of 10 Gy irradiation concerning the proptosis and alleviation of symptoms.

ABSTRACT

During the last twelve months twelve patients with different silicone prostheses of the wrist region underwent examination with arthrograms two to twenty-four months after the operation. The arthrography showed the relation of the implant to its surrounding structures. For either radiocarpal or intercarpal arthrography a very distant access was used. In eight patients the prostheses were surrounded entirely by contrast medium. There was no contrast-medium on one side of the implant in two patients. In one patient a complete disconnection from the capsule to the site of the prosthesis was seen. In one other patient there was evident shrinking of the capsule. Wrist arthrography was very helpful for the evaluation of further clinical proceeding and control of wrist-function.

ABSTRACT

Arthrography was performed during the last 12 months in 14 patients who had 2 months to 10 years after implantation of a silicone-elastomer- or fascia-lata-prosthesis recurrent complaints in their operated wrists. Following an extensive radiological native examination either midcarpal or radiocarpal arthrography was performed in dependence of the site of carpal-bone-substitute. Inflammatory changes of the prosthetic bed, missing penetration of contrast medium into the periprosthetic space and other less common additional findings showed the advantages of the relatively handsome procedure.

ABSTRACT

A 62-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of extremely severe colicky pain in the mesogastric region and vomiting. Six years earlier two duodenal diverticles had been found to be responsible for similar symptoms. Endoscopy and X-ray examination now revealed four extensive duodenal diverticles, the largest of which had an extension of 8 X 7 cm. There were no diverticular complications. The patient became free from complaints by conservative treatment, at first with "zero" diet, then with a regimen rich in dietary fibres and frequent small meals. She remained symptom-free during a follow-up period of six months so far.
