ABSTRACT

Over time, Aromatherapy has consolidated itself as a traditional and important practice for the treatment of infections and diseases of men. The purpose of the study is to conduct an exploratory literature review that encompasses its origin and its present-day scenario. Our intention is to call attention to the curiosity and knowledge that exists about this ancient art and science, which is based on the rational use of essential oils.

ABSTRACT

Bioskin is a natural product produced by a mixed culture of Acetobacter xylinum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. pombe cultured on media containing sucrose. It is of fibrillar nature able to retain some proteins, such as cytochrome c, by adsorption, and mainly composed of glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. This makes it possible that, at an adequate pH value, proteins charged as polyanionic molecules, such as catalase, can be retained by ionic adsorption using the positively charged amino groups of the matrix. In addition, bioskin can also be used as an affinity matrix to retain glycoproteins able to perform specific affinity reactions with the amino sugars of the matrix, such as invertase, fetuin or ovalbumin. Its possible use as a chromatographic support is discussed.

ABSTRACT

The production of both ribitol (which is the translocatable form of reduced carbon) and mannitol (which is the main accumulation form of carbon) by thallus samples of Cladonia sandstedei increases when exogenous urea is supplied to the lichen. In addition, the synthesis of atranorin and its precursor, methyl ß-orcinol carboxylate, is also enhanced by urea. A hypothetical action of ammonia released from this nitrogen source on these metabolic processes is suggested.
