ABSTRACT

Species of the genus Thelephora (Thelephorales, Thelephoraceae) are ectomycorrhizal symbionts of coniferous and broad-leaved plants, and some of them are well-known edible mushrooms, making it an exceptionally important group ecologically and economically. However, the diversity of the species from China has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses, along with morphological observations of this genus. Four new species from China are proposed, viz., T. dactyliophora, T. lacunosa, T. petaloides, and T. pinnatifida. In addition, T. sikkimensis originally described from India is reported for the first time from China. Thelephora dactyliophora, T. pinnatifida, and T. sikkimensis are distributed in subtropical forests and mainly associated with plants of the families Fagaceae and Pinaceae. Thelephora lacunosa and T. petaloides are distributed in tropical to subtropical forests. Thelephora lacunosa is mainly associated with plants of the families Fagaceae and Pinaceae, while T. petaloides is mainly associated with plants of the family Fagaceae. Line drawings of microstructures, color pictures of fresh basidiomes, and detailed descriptions of these five species are provided.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between disease location and segmental mucosal healing (SMH) following exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) in children with Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Treatment-naive pediatric patients with endoscopically active CD treated with EEN alone as induction therapy were retrospectively enrolled from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022. The simple endoscopic score for CD (SES-CD) was employed to score disease activity in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum), rectum, left colon, transverse colon, right colon, and terminal ileum. While the Lewis score assessed that of the small bowel from the jejunum to the proximal ileum (except the terminal ileum). The variation in the total scores for each segment and SES-CD subscores for each ileocolonic segment from baseline to 1 year after EEN therapy and the segmental endoscopic outcomes and potential predictors associated with SMH for the segments scored by SES-CD were evaluated. RESULTS: Overall, 82 children with CD were enrolled. Except for the upper GI segment, scores in other segments declined significantly from baseline to EEN completion (all P < 0.001). We analyzed 486 segments (79, 80, 81, 82, 82 and 82 from upper GI tract, terminal ileum, right colon, transverse colon, left colon, and rectum) and found that the segmental SES-CD at baseline (odds ratio [OR] 0.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.55-0.70, P < 0.001) and upper GI location (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.11-0.55, P = 0.001) were associated with SMH at EEN completion. CONCLUSION: Disease location of the upper GI segment in pediatric CD was associated with SMH following EEN therapy.

ABSTRACT

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) has demonstrated its potential to enhance the light energy utilization ratio of perovskite solar cells by interacting with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and perovskite layers. However, comprehensive investigations into how MOF design and synthesis impact FRET in perovskite systems are scarce. In this work, nanoscale HIAM-type Zr-MOF (HIAM-4023, HIAM-4024, and HIAM-4025) is meticulously tailored to evaluate FRET's existence and its influence on the perovskite photoactive layer. Through precise adjustments of amino groups and acceptor units in the organic linker, HIAM-MOFs are synthesized with the same topology, but distinct photoluminescence (PL) emission properties. Significant FRET is observed between HIAM-4023/HIAM-4024 and the perovskite, confirmed by spectral overlap, fluorescence lifetime decay, and calculated distances between HIAM-4023/HIAM-4024 and the perovskite. Conversely, the spectral overlap between the PL emission of HIAM-4025 and the perovskite's absorption spectrum is relatively minimal, impeding the energy transfer from HIAM-4025 to the perovskite. Therefore, the HIAM-4023/HIAM-4024-assisted perovskite devices exhibit enhanced EQE via FRET processes, whereas the HIAM-4025 demonstrates comparable EQE to the pristine. Ultimately, the HIAM-4023-assisted perovskite device achieves an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.22% compared with pristine devices (PCE of 22.06%) and remarkable long-term stability under ambient conditions and continuous light illumination.

ABSTRACT

Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been extensively studied due to their very rich structural chemistry. The combination of nearly unlimited carboxylic acid-based linkers and Zr6 clusters with multiple connectivities has led to diverse structures and specific properties of resultant Zr-MOFs. Herein, we demonstrate the successful use of reticular chemistry to construct two novel Zr-MOFs, HIAM-4040 and HIAM-4040-OH, with zfu topology. Based on a thorough structural analysis of (4,4)-connected lvt-type Zr-tetracarboxylate frameworks and a judicious linker design, we have obtained the first example of a Zr-pentacarboxylate framework featuring unprecedented 5-connected organic linkers and 5-connected Zr6 clusters. Compared with HIAM-4040, a larger Stokes shift is achieved in HIAM-4040-OH via hydroxyl group induced excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). HIAM-4040-OH exhibits high chemical and thermal stability and is used for HClO detection in aqueous solution with excellent sensitivity and selectivity.

ABSTRACT

4-cyanobenzoic acid serves as a crucial intermediate for the synthesis of various high-value organic compounds. The enzymatic hydrolysis of terephthalonitrile to produce 4-cyanobenzoic acid using nitrilase offers the advantages of a simple reaction pathway, environmental friendliness, and easy product separation. In order to efficiently develop nitrilases that meet industrial production requirements, the virtual screening method used in the study is established and mature. From a total of 371 amino acids in the nitrilase AfNIT, which exhibits activity in terephthalonitrile hydrolysis, three candidate sites (F168, S192, and T201) were identified, and a "small and accurate" mutant library was constructed. The triple mutant F168V/T201N/S192F was screened from this small mutant library with a specific activity of 227.3 U mg-1 , which was 3.8 times higher than that of the wild-type AfNIT. Using the whole-cell biocatalyst containing the mutant F168V/T201N/S192F, terephthalonitrile was successfully hydrolyzed at a concentration of 150 g L-1 to produce 4-cyanobenzoic acid with a final yield of 170.3 g L-1 and a conversion rate of 98.7%. The obtained nitrilase mutant F168V/T201N/S192F in this study can be effectively applied in the biomanufacturing of 4-cyanobenzoic acid using terephthalonitrile as a substrate. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate the significant improvement in predictive accuracy achieved through the latest AI-assisted computer simulation methods. This approach represents a promising and feasible new technological pathway for assisting enzyme engineering research, laying a theoretical foundation for other related studies.

PURPOSE: The study aims at exploring the impact of dietary intake on the relief of bowel dysfunction among patients with rectal cancer after the sphincter-saving surgery. METHODS: A prospective cohort design was used. A total of 299 patients were followed up at a tertiary hospital in East China between April 2020 and July 2021. Postoperative food intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire, and bowel dysfunction was assessed with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's bowel function scale. The generalized estimating equation and the generalized additive mixed model were used to analyze the collected data. RESULTS: The average daily intake of livestock and poultry meats and dairy products during the first 6 months after sphincter-saving surgery was significantly associated with the relief of bowel dysfunction. Bowel dysfunction was relieved most quickly among patients who consumed 40.81 to 59.1 g/d of livestock and poultry meat during the first 3 months after surgery. Bowel dysfunction improved more slowly during the first 6 months after surgery among patients who consumed greater than 107.11 g/d dairy products than among patients who consumed 0 g/d dairy products. CONCLUSION: The impact of dietary factors on bowel dysfunction observed in this study added to the limited evidence about the specific effects of consuming foods and nutrients on defecation dysfunction, and these results provided a theoretical basis for the use of dietary modification programs aimed at relieving bowel dysfunction as soon as possible.

ABSTRACT

Streptomyces bingchenggensis is an industrial producer of milbemycins, which are important anthelmintic and insecticidal agents. Two-component systems (TCSs), which are typically situated in the same operon and are composed of a histidine kinase and a response regulator, are the predominant signal transduction pathways involved in the regulation of secondary metabolism in Streptomyces. Here, an atypical TCS, AtcR/AtcK, in which the encoding genes (sbi_06838/sbi_06839) are organized in a head-to-head pair, was demonstrated to be indispensable for the biosynthesis of multiple secondary metabolites in S. bingchenggensis. With the null TCS mutants, the production of milbemycin and yellow compound was abolished but nanchangmycin was overproduced. Transcriptional analysis and electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that AtcR regulated the biosynthesis of these three secondary metabolites by a MilR3-mediated cascade. First, AtcR was activated by phosphorylation from signal-triggered AtcK. Second, the activated AtcR promoted the transcription of milR3. Third, MilR3 specifically activated the transcription of downstream genes from milbemycin and yellow compound biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) and nanR4 from the nanchangmycin BGC. Finally, because NanR4 is a specific repressor in the nanchangmycin BGC, activation of MilR3 downstream genes led to the production of yellow compound and milbemycin but inhibited nanchangmycin production. By rewiring the regulatory cascade, two strains were obtained, the yield of nanchangmycin was improved by 45-fold to 6.08 g/L and the production of milbemycin was increased twofold to 1.34 g/L. This work has broadened our knowledge on atypical TCSs and provided practical strategies to engineer strains for the production of secondary metabolites in Streptomyces.IMPORTANCEStreptomyces bingchenggensis is an important industrial strain that produces milbemycins. Two-component systems (TCSs), which consist of a histidine kinase and a response regulator, are the predominant signal transduction pathways involved in the regulation of secondary metabolism in Streptomyces. Coupled encoding genes of TCSs are typically situated in the same operon. Here, TCSs with encoding genes situated in separate head-to-head neighbor operons were labeled atypical TCSs. It was found that the atypical TCS AtcR/AtcK played an indispensable role in the biosynthesis of milbemycin, yellow compound, and nanchangmycin in S. bingchenggensis. This atypical TCS regulated the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites in a cascade mediated via a cluster-situated regulator, MilR3. Through rewiring the regulatory pathways, strains were successfully engineered to overproduce milbemycin and nanchangmycin. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on atypical TCS, in which the encoding genes of RR and HK were situated in separate head-to-head neighbor operons, involved in secondary metabolism. In addition, data mining showed that atypical TCSs were widely distributed in actinobacteria.

ABSTRACT

Alkali metal-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent porosity are scarce because of their high tendency to coordinate with solvents such as water. However, these MOFs are lightweight and bear gravimetric benefits for gas adsorption related applications. In this study, we present the successful construction of a microporous MOF, designated as HIAM-111, built solely on sodium ions by using an octacarboxylate linker. The structure of HIAM-111 is based on 8-connected Na4 clusters and exhibits a novel topology with an underlying 32,42,8-c net. Remarkably, HAM-111 possesses a robust and highly porous framework with a BET surface area of 1561 m2/g, significantly surpassing that of the previously reported Na-MOFs. Further investigations demonstrate that HIAM-111 is capable of separating C2H2/CO2 and purifying C2H4 directly from C2H4/C2H2/C2H6 with high adsorption capacities. The current work may shed light on the rational design of robust and porous MOFs based on alkali metals.

Herein, three tritopic carboxylic acids were used to construct three Zr-MOFs, HIAM-4033, HIAM-4034, and HIAM-4035, to investigate the effect of carboxyl position on the MOF structures. The results showed that HIAM-4033 and HIAM-4034 possess (3,9)-c models with different underlying nets, whereas HIAM-4035 exhibits the same underlying net as UiO-68. Nanosized HIAM-4033 exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for detecting aromatic acids, such as benzoic acid and 2-fluorobenzoic acid, compared with aliphatic acids and inorganic acids. This study offers new insights into achieving an organic linker directed structure evolution of Zr-MOFs, which might facilitate the discovery of unprecedented underlying nets.

OBJECTIVES: Intestinal Behçet's disease (BD) predominantly affects the ileocecal region and is currently diagnosed based on endoscopic features and clinical manifestations. It is difficult to distinguish between intestinal BD and Crohn's disease (CD) due to similar patient populations, gastrointestinal involvement, extraintestinal manifestations, and long-term recurrent course. In this study we aimed to compare the clinicopathological and immunophenotypic features of intestinal BD to CD. METHODS: The medical and pathological records of 29 cases of intestinal BD and 120 cases of CD diagnosed at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Immunohistochemistry for CD3, CD20, FOXP3, myeloperoxidase, and quantitative analysis of the infiltrating inflammatory cells was conducted. RESULTS: Intestinal BD with ileocecal ulcer had a higher incidence of abdominal pain and a higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate than CD, while chronic diarrhea was more common in CD. Excessive neutrophils in the mucosal lamina propria, neutrophilic exudate on the ulcer surface, and prominent lymphocytic infiltration in ulcer tissues were statistically more frequent in intestinal BD than in CD. The numbers of FOXP3+ T cells, CD3+ T cells, and CD20+ B cells in biopsy tissue from intestinal BD were significantly higher than CD, but the ratio of FOXP3+ T cells to CD3+ T cells was not statistically different. CONCLUSION: Besides the typical clinical and endoscopic findings, diagnostic biopsies from the ileocecal region in intestinal BD show some histological and immunophenotypic features that are different from CD, which may be useful in distinguishing these two entities.

ABSTRACT

Herein, organic linker-based near-infrared-I (NIR-I) emissive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with a maximum emission peak at 741 nm, were synthesized via linker engineering. By integration of stronger acceptor and donor groups into one linker, a significant bathochromic-shift is realized. This MOF exhibits great selectivity and sensitivity for aniline and p-phenylenediamine detection. This finding provides new insights into the rational design of NIR-MOFs for sensing and related applications.

ABSTRACT

In order to explore the application prospects of phages for controlling bacterial contamination, a lytic phage Pf17397_F_PD1 (Later abbreviated as PD1) was isolated from fish guts using Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 17397 as the host bacterium. The phage displayed short latency (18 min), long lysis period (212 min), and high lysis volume (1.47 × 102 PFU/each cell). It displayed wide temperature (30-70°C) and pH (4-11) tolerance. Genomic comparison revealed a maximum sequence identity of 48.65% between phage PD1 and other identified phages, indicating that PD1 was a new phage. The phage PD1 significantly inhibited the growth of P. fluorescens in milk and grass carp at 4°C and 25°C. Compared to the negative control, bacterial levels in milk stored at 25°C for 48 h were reduced by 2.71 log CFU/mL and 2.84 log CFU/mL at the multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 100 and 1,000, respectively. In contrast, when grass carp were stored at 25°C for 24 h, the bacterial load was reduced by 1.28 log CFU/g and 2.64 log CFU/g compared to the control (MOI of 100 and 1,000). When the phage was applied for preservation of grass carp blocks, total volatile salt nitrogen (TVB-N) values of phage-treated samples increased by 6.8 mg/100 g and 7.5 mg/100 g at MOI of 100 and 1,000, respectively, after 7 days of storage, which was significantly lower than that of the control group (15.83 mg/100 g). This study showed that phage PD1 was a good natural biological antimicrobial agent against P. fluorescens ATCC 17397.

Background: Depression is generally accompanied by a disturbed conscious processing of emotion, which manifests as a negative bias to facial/voice emotion information and a decreased accuracy in emotion recognition tasks. Several studies have proved that abnormal brain activation was responsible for the deficit function of conscious emotion recognition in depression. However, the altered brain activation related to the conscious processing of emotion in depression was incongruent among studies. Therefore, we conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) analysis to better understand the underlying neurophysiological mechanism of conscious processing of emotion in depression. Method: Electronic databases were searched using the search terms "depression," "emotion recognition," and "neuroimaging" from inceptions to April 10th, 2023. We retrieved trials which explored the neuro-responses of depressive patients to explicit emotion recognition tasks. Two investigators independently performed literature selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. The spatial consistency of brain activation in conscious facial expressions recognition was calculated using ALE. The robustness of the results was examined by Jackknife sensitivity analysis. Results: We retrieved 11,365 articles in total, 28 of which were included. In the overall analysis, we found increased activity in the middle temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, and cuneus, and decreased activity in the superior temporal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, insula, and superior frontal gyrus. In response to positive stimuli, depressive patients showed hyperactivity in the medial frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, and insula (uncorrected p < 0.001). When receiving negative stimuli, a higher activation was found in the precentral gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, precuneus, and superior temporal gyrus (uncorrected p < 0.001). Conclusion: Among depressive patients, a broad spectrum of brain areas was involved in a deficit of conscious emotion processing. The activation of brain regions was different in response to positive or negative stimuli. Due to potential clinical heterogeneity, the findings should be treated with caution. ABSTRACT

The enantioconvergent C(sp3)-N cross-coupling of racemic alkyl halides with (hetero)aromatic amines represents an ideal means to afford enantioenriched N-alkyl (hetero)aromatic amines yet has remained unexplored due to the catalyst poisoning specifically for strong-coordinating heteroaromatic amines. Here, we demonstrate a copper-catalyzed enantioconvergent radical C(sp3)-N cross-coupling of activated racemic alkyl halides with (hetero)aromatic amines under ambient conditions. The key to success is the judicious selection of appropriate multidentate anionic ligands through readily fine-tuning both electronic and steric properties for the formation of a stable and rigid chelating Cu complex. Thus, this kind of ligand could not only enhance the reducing capability of a copper catalyst to provide an enantioconvergent radical pathway but also avoid the coordination with other coordinating heteroatoms, thereby overcoming catalyst poisoning and/or chiral ligand displacement. This protocol covers a wide range of coupling partners (89 examples for activated racemic secondary/tertiary alkyl bromides/chlorides and (hetero)aromatic amines) with high functional group compatibility. When allied with follow-up transformations, it provides a highly flexible platform to access synthetically useful enantioenriched amine building blocks.

The development of nanoscaled luminescent metal-organic frameworks (nano-LMOFs) with organic linker-based emission to explore their applications in sensing, bioimaging and photocatalysis is of great interest as material size and emission wavelength both have remarkable influence on their performances. However, there is lack of platforms that can systematically tune the emission and size of nano-LMOFs with customized linker design. Herein two series of fcu- and csq-type nano-LMOFs, with precise size control in a broad range and emission colors from blue to near-infrared, were prepared using 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and its derivative based ditopic- and tetratopic carboxylic acids as the emission sources. The modification of tetratopic carboxylic acids using OH and NH2 as the substituent groups not only induces significant emission bathochromic shift of the resultant MOFs, but also endows interesting features for their potential applications. As one example, we show that the non-substituted and NH2 -substituted nano-LMOFs exhibit turn-off and turn-on responses for highly selective and sensitive detection of tryptophan over other nineteen natural amino acids. This work sheds light on the rational construction of nano-LMOFs with specific emission behaviours and sizes, which will undoubtedly facilitate their applications in related areas.

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as one of several promising materials to study light-harvesting and energy-transfer processes. However, it is still a big challenge to tune and direct energy transfer in luminescent MOFs-based light-harvesting system. Herein, a series of new light-harvesting zinc-based luminescent MOFs with seh underlying topology were reported by successfully integrating 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and its derivative-based carboxylic acids and pyridine-contained linkers into one structure. The strong spectra overlap between the emission and absorption spectra of carboxylic acids and pyridine-type linkers afforded an ideal platform to realize efficient energy transfer from the blue to near-infrared range. This work provides a novel approach to the rational design and synthesis of MOFs-based multicomponent light-harvesting materials with tunable energy transfer to mimic natural photosynthetic processes.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a foodborne pathogenic bacterium commonly found in seafood. The emergence of drug-resistant strains poses a threat to human public health and economic development. Therefore, there are increasing needs to develop new technologies in controlling multidrug-resistant V. parahaemolyticus strains and to evaluate their practical efficiency in seafood or mariculture. In this study, we screened two genetically related V. parahaemolyticus phages, F23s2 and H256D1, which belonged to the siphoviridae family and podoviridae family, respectively. They showed 97.13% and 96.13% identity with Vibrio phage vB_Vpap_MGD1, respectively. Both phages were stable at pH 4-11 and displayed temperature tolerance (<70°C). Meanwhile they showed a broad host spectrum for multidrug-resistant V. parahaemolyticus, and Phage F23s2 lysed 16 of all 23 V. parahaemolyticus strains, while phage H256D1 lysed 10 strains. Phage F23s2 and H256D1 had a good inhibitory effect on V. parahaemolyticus in shrimp meat. Compared with the negative group, the bacterial amount of experimental group with phage F23s2 decreased by 1.60 log colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL at 12 h. For phage H256D1, the bacterial concentration of shrimp meat contaminated with V. parahaemolyticus H256 increased to 5.65 log CFU/mL at 72 h, while the concentration of the experimental group in presence of phage H256D1 was 3.58 log CFU/mL. All live clams infected with V. parahaemolyticus died after 96 h in the absence of phage, whereas clams with phage F23s2 and H256D1 still had a survival rate of 12% and 4%, respectively. Understanding the gene function and biology of phages facilitates its application for control of V. parahaemolyticus contamination worldwide.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore clinical effect of open reduction and internal fixation with Henry's approach butterfly plate in treating double-column Die-punch fractures of distal radius. METHODS: From January 2018 to June 2021, 26 patients with double-column Die-column distal radius were treated with open reduction and internal fixation through Henry's surgical approach and using distal radius volar column plate(butterfly plate), including 14 males and 12 females, aged from 20 to 75 years old with an average age of (44.2±3.4) years old. Postopertaive complications were observed, Gartland-Werley score at 12 months after opertaion was used to evaluate wrist joint function. RESULTS: All 26 patients were followed up from 10 to 18 months with an average of(13.4±0.8) months. All fractures were obtained fracture union, the time ranged from 8.5 to 15.8 weeks with an average of (11.4±0.5) weeks. All incisions healed at stageⅠwithout infection, nerve injury and internal fixation failure occurred. Postoperative Gartland-Werley score at 12 months was (3.65±0.36), and 16 patients got excellent result, 8 good and 2 moderate. CONCLUSION: Open reduction and internal fixation with butterfly plate for the treatment of double-column Die-punch fractures of the distal radius through volar Henry approach could obtain satisfactory clinical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis is an irreversible infectious disease that occurs with high incidence. Exploring the immune responses of peri-implantitis is key to developing targeted treatment strategies. However, there is limited research on the immune response of peri-implantitis. METHODS: This study performed a weighted gene co-expression network analysis to identify the peri-implantitis related gene network and conducted a functional enrichment analysis of the gene network. Thereafter, the candidate hub genes were selected by constructing a protein-protein interaction network and drawing an upset plot. The hub genes were identified through their significant associations with disease condition and validated using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis. Using the gene set variation analysis, the hub genes were further used to explore infiltrating immunocytes and immune factors in peri-implantitis. Finally, the immunocytes and immune factor related hub genes were intersected to obtain the therapeutic target, which was validated using histological staining. RESULTS: The peri-implantitis related gene network was enriched in innate and adaptive immune response. Subsequently, interleukin (IL)1B, IL10, ITGAM, ITGB1, STAT3, and TLR4 were identified as hub genes. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells, macrophages, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, natural killer T cells, and immature B cells were positively and significantly related to the hub genes IL1B, TLR4, ITGAM, and ITGB1 (correlation coefficient > 0.80). While immune factors CXCL10, IL6, and CXCL12 and hub genes IL10 and IL1B held the highest degree in the immune factors network. IL1B may be a promising therapeutic target. CONCLUSION: This study provides new insights into the hub genes, immunocytes, and immune factors underlying peri-implantitis immunological bioprocess.

ABSTRACT

Background: Depression is a mental health disorder characterized by affective, somatic, and cognitive symptoms. Attention bias modification (ABM) has been widely used to treat depression. However, the results seem inconsistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of ABM for depression and to explore the optimal protocol of ABM. Methods: Seven databases were systematically searched from their inceptions to 5 October 2022 to include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ABM for depression. Two independent reviewers selected the eligible articles, extracted data, and evaluated the risk of bias using version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (ROB 2.0) for randomized trials. The primary outcome was the evaluation of depressive symptoms using widely accepted and validated scales. The secondary outcomes included rumination and attentional control. Meta-analysis was conducted by using RevMan (version 5.4) and Stata (version 12.0). Subgroup analyses and meta-regressions were performed to identify the source of heterogeneity. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Results: A total of 19 trials involving 20 datasets (1,262 participants) were included. The overall risk of bias in one study was rated as low risk of bias, three studies were considered as high, and the remaining studies were some concerns. Compared with attention control training (ACT), ABM had a greater effect in the improvement of depression (SMD = -0.48, 95% CI -0.80 to -0.17, I2 = 82%) and rumination (MD = -3.46, 95% CI -6.06 to -0.87, I2 = 0%). No significant differences were observed in the attentional control outcome between ABM and ACT (MD = 3.07, 95% CI -0.52 to 6.65, I 2 = 0%). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that adults exhibited a greater decrease in depression scores than adolescents. ABM using the dot-probe task, training target stimulus presented by face, and training directions by left-right were associated with better antidepressant effects. ABM training delivered in the laboratory tended to yield a better effect than those conducted at home. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the results were robust. The certainty of the evidence for all outcomes was low or very low, and publication bias may exist. Conclusion: Due to high heterogeneity and limited studies, not enough current evidence supported that ABM could be an effective intervention to relieve depressive symptoms. More rigorous RCTs are required to verify the benefits and to explore the optimal protocol of ABM training for depression.Systematic Review Registration: [PROSPERO], identifier [No. CRD42021279163].
