ABSTRACT

Introduction: The aim of the article was too investigate and compare the feasibility, safety, and early postoperative recovery associated with laparoscopic partial splenectomy (LPS) and open partial splenectomy (OPS) in patients with benign splenic tumours and traumatic splenic rupture. Material and methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data from 110 patients undergoing splenic resection at our hospital between March 2019 and May 2022. Among them, 35 patients underwent OPS, 25 underwent LPS for traumatic splenic rupture, while 50 patients with benign splenic tumours underwent either OPS (n = 20) or LPS (n = 30). Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data were collected and compared. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software. Results: There was no significant difference in the general data between the 2 groups of patients with benign splenic tumours and those with splenic trauma. Among patients with traumatic splenic rupture, the OPS group had a shorter operation time (p < 0.05). Regardless of whether they had traumatic splenic rupture or benign splenic tumours, the LPS group required less postoperative analgesia and had a shorter defecation recovery time (p < 0.05). Additionally, the LPS group displayed lower white blood cell count, white blood cell/lymphocyte ratio (WLR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), C-reactive protein (CRP), calcitonin (PCT), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) than the OPS group on the first and third days post-surgery (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In comparison to OPS, LPS presents significant advantages, including minimal surgical trauma, a reduced early postoperative inflammatory response, milder wound pain, and a faster recovery of gastrointestinal function.

ABSTRACT

Urolithin A (UroA), a dietary phytochemical, is produced by gut bacteria from fruits rich in natural polyphenols ellagitannins (ETs). The efficiency of ETs metabolism to UroA in humans depends on gut microbiota. UroA has shown a variety of pharmacological activities. In this study we investigated the effects of UroA on atherosclerotic lesion development and stability. Apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice were fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet for 3 months to establish atherosclerosis model. Meanwhile the mice were administered UroA (50 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.g.). We showed that UroA administration significantly decreased diet-induced atherosclerotic lesions in brachiocephalic arteries, macrophage content in plaques, expression of endothelial adhesion molecules, intraplaque hemorrhage and size of necrotic core, while increased the expression of smooth muscle actin and the thickness of fibrous cap, implying features of plaque stabilization. The underlying mechanisms were elucidated using TNF-α-stimulated human endothelial cells. Pretreatment with UroA (10, 25, 50 µM) dose-dependently inhibited TNF-α-induced endothelial cell activation and monocyte adhesion. However, the anti-inflammatory effects of UroA in TNF-α-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were independent of NF-κB p65 pathway. We conducted RNA-sequencing profiling analysis to identify the differential expression of genes (DEGs) associated with vascular function, inflammatory responses, cell adhesion and thrombosis in UroA-pretreated HUVECs. Human disease enrichment analysis revealed that the DEGs were significantly correlated with cardiovascular diseases. We demonstrated that UroA pretreatment mitigated endothelial inflammation by promoting NO production and decreasing YAP/TAZ protein expression and TEAD transcriptional activity in TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs. On the other hand, we found that UroA administration modulated the transcription and cleavage of lipogenic transcription factors SREBP1/2 in the liver to ameliorate cholesterol metabolism in ApoE-/- mice. This study provides an experimental basis for new dietary therapeutic option to prevent atherosclerosis.

ABSTRACT

Corn (Zea mays L.) is an important annual grain that is cultivated as a food staple around the world. The current study examined the effect of wastewater and a combination of biological and organic fertilizers on the morphological and phytochemical traits of corn, using a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. The first factor was biological and organic fertilizers at seven levels, including the control (no fertilization), bacterial biological fertilizers (NPK) along with iron and zinc Barvar biofertilizers, fungal biofertilizers made from Mycorrhiza and Trichoderma, biochar, a combination of bacterial and fungal biofertilizers, and a combination of bacterial and fungal biofertilizers with biochar. The second factor was irrigation at two levels (conventional irrigation and irrigation with wastewater). The traits studied included the morphological yield, phenols, flavonoids, polyphenols, glomalin, cadmium content in plant parts, and translocation factor (TF). The results disclosed that the best treatment in regard to the morphological traits was related to conventional water + biochar + mycorrhiza + Trichoderma + NPK. The highest phenol and flavonoid content were observed when biochar + mycorrhiza + Trichoderma + NPK treatments were used in both water treatments. Also, the wastewater + biochar + mycorrhiza + Trichoderma + NPK treatment demonstrated the highest total glomalin and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity. The obtained results demonstrate that combined biological and organic fertilizer use on corn plants can effectively alleviate the deleterious effects of cadmium present in wastewater.

ABSTRACT

The importance of food quality and safety lies in ensuring the best product quality to meet consumer demands and public health. Advanced technologies play a crucial role in minimizing the risk of foodborne illnesses, contamination, drug residue, and other potential hazards in food. Significant materials and technological advancements have been made throughout the food supply chain. Among them, quantum dots (QDs), as a class of advanced nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties, are progressively demonstrating their value in the field of food quality and safety. This review aims to explore cutting-edge research on the different applications of QDs in food quality and safety, including encapsulation of bioactive compounds, detection of food analytes, food preservation and packaging, and intelligent food freshness indicators. Moreover, the modification strategies and potential toxicities of diverse QDs are outlined, which can affect performance and hinder applications in the food industry. The findings suggested that QDs are mainly used in analyte detection and active/intelligent food packaging. Various food analytes can be detected using QD-based sensors, including heavy metal ions, pesticides, antibiotics, microorganisms, additives, and functional components. Moreover, QD incorporation aided in improving the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of film/coatings, resulting in extended shelf life for packaged food. Finally, the perspectives and critical challenges for the productivity, toxicity, and practical application of QDs are also summarized. By consolidating these essential aspects into this review, the way for developing high-performance QD-based nanomaterials is presented for researchers and food technologists to better capitalize upon this technology in food applications.

ABSTRACT

Chia seeds have gained significant attention due to their unique composition and potential health benefits, including high dietary fibers, omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, and phenolic compounds. These components contribute to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, as well as their ability to improve glucose metabolism and dyslipidemia. Germination is recognized as a promising strategy to enhance the nutritional value and bioavailability of chia seeds. Chia seed sprouts have been found to exhibit increased essential amino acid content, elevated levels of dietary fiber and total phenols, and enhanced antioxidant capability. However, there is limited information available concerning the dynamic changes of bioactive compounds during the germination process and the key factors influencing these alterations in biosynthetic pathways. Additionally, the influence of various processing conditions, such as temperature, light exposure, and duration, on the nutritional value of chia seed sprouts requires further investigation. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the nutritional profile of chia seeds and the dynamic changes that occur during germination. Furthermore, the potential for tailored germination practices to produce chia sprouts with personalized nutrition, targeting specific health needs, is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

Broccoli has gained popularity as a highly consumed vegetable due to its nutritional and health properties. This study aimed to evaluate the composition profile and the antioxidant capacity of a hydrophilic extract derived from broccoli byproducts, as well as its influence on redox biology, Alzheimer's disease markers, and aging in the Caenorhabditis elegans model. The presence of glucosinolate was observed and antioxidant capacity was demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro acetylcholinesterase inhibitory capacity was quantified, and the treatment ameliorated the amyloid-ß- and tau-induced proteotoxicity in transgenic strains via SOD-3 and SKN-1, respectively, and HSP-16.2 for both parameters. Furthermore, a preliminary study on aging indicated that the extract effectively reduced reactive oxygen species levels in aged worms and extended their lifespan. Utilizing broccoli byproducts for nutraceutical or functional foods could manage vegetable processing waste, enhancing productivity and sustainability while providing significant health benefits.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Vascular calcification, a devastating vascular complication accompanying atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, increases the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events and compromises the efficacy of vascular interventions. However, effective therapeutic drugs and treatments to delay or prevent vascular calcification are lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to test the therapeutic effects and mechanism of Moscatilin (also known as dendrophenol) from Dendrobium huoshanense (an eminent traditional Chinese medicine) in suppressing vascular calcification in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice (25-week-old) were subjected to nicotine and vitamin D3 (VD3) treatment to induce vascular calcification. In vitro, we established the cellular model of osteogenesis of human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) under phosphate conditions. RESULTS: By utilizing an in-house drug screening strategy, we identified Moscatilin as a new naturally-occurring chemical entity to reduce HASMC calcium accumulation. The protective effects of Moscatilin against vascular calcification were verified in cultured HASMCs. Unbiased transcriptional profiling analysis and cellular thermal shift assay suggested that Moscatilin suppresses vascular calcification via binding to interleukin 13 receptor subunit A2 (IL13RA2) and augmenting its expression. Furthermore, IL13RA2 was reduced during HASMC osteogenesis, thus promoting the secretion of inflammatory factors via STAT3. We further validated the participation of Moscatilin-inhibited vascular calcification by the classical WNT/ß-catenin pathway, among which WNT3 played a key role in this process. Moscatilin mitigated the crosstalk between WNT3/ß-catenin and IL13RA2/STAT3 to reduce osteogenic differentiation of HASMCs. CONCLUSION: This study supports the potential of Moscatilin as a new naturally-occurring candidate drug for treating vascular calcification via regulating the IL13RA2/STAT3 and WNT3/ß-catenin signalling pathways.

ABSTRACT

Flavonoids are a class of polyphenols which are widely distributed in natural products and foods. They have diverse bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and antioxidant activities. Generally, the foods rich in flavonoids are usually consumed after thermal processing. However, thermal stability of flavonoids is usually low, and thermal processing could cause either positive or negative influences on their stability and bioactivities. In this review, the effects of thermal processing on thermal stability and bioactivity of dietary flavonoids from different food sources are summarized. Then, strategies to improve thermal stability of dietary flavonoids are discussed and the effect of some promising thermal technologies are also preliminary clarified. The promising thermal technologies may be alternative to conventional thermal processing technologies.

BACKGROUND: Flavonoids are extensively present in fruits, vegetables, grains, and medicinal plants. Myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R) comprise a sequence of detrimental incidents following myocardial ischemia. Research indicates that flavonoids have the potential to act as cardioprotective agents against MI/R injuries. Several specific flavonoids, e.g., luteolin, hesperidin, quercetin, kaempferol, and puerarin, have demonstrated cardioprotective activities in animal models. PURPOSE: The objective of this review is to identify the cardioprotective flavonoids, investigate their mechanisms of action, and explore their application in myocardial ischemia. METHODS: A search of PubMed database and Google Scholar was conducted using keywords "myocardial ischemia" and "flavonoids". Studies published within the last 10 years reporting on the cardioprotective effects of natural flavonoids on animal models were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 55 natural flavonoids were identified and discussed within this review. It can be summarized that flavonoids regulate the following main strategies: antioxidation, anti-inflammation, calcium modulation, mitochondrial protection, ER stress inhibition, anti-apoptosis, ferroptosis inhibition, autophagy modulation, and inhibition of adverse cardiac remodeling. Additionally, the number and position of OH, 3'4'-catechol, C2=C3, and C4=O may play a significant role in the cardioprotective activity of flavonoids. CONCLUSION: This review serves as a reference for designing a daily diet to prevent or reduce damages following ischemia and screening of flavonoids for clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes belongs to the most prevalent metabolic diseases worldwide, which is featured with insulin resistance, closely associated with obesity and urgently needs to be treated. Baicalin, belonging to natural flavonoids, has been reported to inhibit oxidative stress or inflammatoin. PURPOSE: This study investigated the properties of baicalin on modulating abnormal glucolipid metabolism, as well as the underlying in-vitro and in-vivo mechanisms. METHODS: Insulin-resistant (IR)-HepG2 cells were stimulated by dexamethasone (20 µM) and high glucose (50 mM) for 48 h and incubated with or without baicalin or metformin for another 16 h. Male C57BL/6 J mice were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD, 60 % kcal% fat) during the total 14 weeks. Obese mice were then administered with baicalin (50 and 100 mg/kg) or vehicle solution everyday through oral gavage during the last 4-week period. Moreover, baicalin metabolisms in vitro and in vivo were determined using UPLC/MS/MS to study its metabolism situation. RESULTS: Exposure to dexamethasone and high glucose damaged the abilities of glycogen synthesis and glucose uptake with elevated oxidative stress and increased generation levels of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) in HepG2 cells. These impairments were basically reversed by baicalin treatment. Four-week oral administration with baicalin ameliorated hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in HFD-induced obese and pre-diabetic mice. Downregulation of IRS/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway accomplished with reduced GLUT4 expression and enhanced GSK-3ß activity was observed in insulin resistant HepG2 cells as well as liver tissues from pre-diabetic mice; and such effect was prevented by baicalin. Moreover, baicalin and its matabolites were detected in IR-HepG2 cells and mouse plasma. CONCLUSION: The study illustrated that baicalin alleviated insulin resistance by activating insulin signaling pathways and inhibiting oxidative stress and AGEs production, revealing the potential of baicalin to be a therapeutic natural flavonoid against hepatic insulin and glucose-lipid metabolic disturbance in pre-diabetes accompanied with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the application effect of continuous nursing intervention in type 2 diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: Patients with type 2 DR were selected and divided into intervention group and control group by random. The control group received routine nursing intervention, and the intervention group received continuous nursing intervention on the basis of the control group. The clinical effects of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: After 1 and 2 years of intervention, the intervention group compared to the control group. The rate of visual acuity decrease was significantly lower (p < 0.05). Fasting blood glucose, 2 h postprandial blood glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin were significantly lower (p < 0.05). The self-management ability and satisfaction were significantly higher, and the readmission rate was significantly lower (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The continuous nursing intervention model has a good clinical effect on the visual acuity of patients with type 2 DR.

ABSTRACT

Olive (Olea europaea) is a native species from the Mediterranean region and widely cultivated for its edible fruit, known as olives. Olives are a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, and polyphenols, and have been shown to have various health benefits. They are commonly used for cooking and are also employed in cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industry. The extract obtained from olive fruits and several subproducts of the olive industry has demonstrated several biological activities mainly associated with their antioxidant and inflammatory properties. Thus, olives, olive-derived products, and subproducts of the olive industry have gained popularity in recent years due to their potential health benefits and their use in traditional medicine. The present chapter summarizes the main applications of Olea europaea and olive oil processing by-products as therapeutic agents against cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and antimicrobial agents.

SCOPE: Higher flavonoid intake is associated with reduced risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, there is a large discrepancy in the effects of flavonoid supplementation on NAFLD. To fill such knowledge gap, we systematically reviewed randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to critically assess flavonoid supplementation effect on liver function, lipid profile, inflammation, and insulin resistance in adults with NAFLD. METHODS AND RESULTS: A systematic search was conducted from 4 databases from inception until May 2023. Twelve RCTs were included in the final analysis demonstrating beneficial effects of flavonoids on ALT (SMD = -3.59, p = 0.034), AST (SMD = -4.47, p = 0.001), GGT (SMD = -8.70, p = 0.000), CK-18M30 (SMD = -0.35, p = 0.042), TG (SMD = -0.37, p = 0.001), LDL-C (SMD = -0.38, p = 0.039), TC (MD = -0.25 mmol/l, p = 0.017), steatosis score (MD = -18.97, p = 0.30), TNF-α (MD = -0.88, p = 0.000), and NF-κB (MD = -1.62, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis suggests that flavonoid alleviates NAFLD through exerting favourable effects on liver function, lipid profile, and inflammation, indicating flavonoid supplementation presents a promising drug regimen for the management of NAFLD and its associated complications.

The processing of surimi products requires the addition of high levels of salt, which makes it a high-salt food that poses a risk to human health. The search for exogenous additives to reduce the salt content of surimi products while ensuring their quality characteristics is crucial. Therefore, the effect of different species of cellulose on enhancing the quality characteristics of low-salt surimi gels was investigated and the best-modified cellulose was identified. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were selected for this study to compare with high-salt control and low-salt control. The results showed that cellulose could induce conformational transitions of proteins and promote the formation of an ordered and dense surimi gel network and the minimum porosity of 15.935% was obtained in the MCC-treated group. The cellulose-treated group conferred good textural properties to the surimi gels, significantly improved gel strength and water retention capacity (p < 0.05), and reduced the amount of water lost after cooking treatment (p < 0.05). Low-field NMR results showed that cellulose reduced the release of water, converting more free water to immobile water, thus increasing the water proton density. The higher energy storage modulus G' in the presence of cellulose indicated a more stable surimi gel system dominated by springiness. In summary, cellulose could confer better quality characteristics to low-salt surimi gels and MCC performance was superior to other cellulose species. This study helps the understanding of the mechanism of cellulose-surimi action on the development of high-quality low-salt surimi gels.

Sulfated κ-carrageenan (S-KC), carboxymethylated κ-carrageenan (C-KC), acetylated κ-carrageenan (A-KC) and phosphorylated κ-carrageenan (P-KC) were synthesized and tested for their inhibitory effect on heterocyclic amine (HAs) formation in roasted tilapia fish patties. Fish patties with 1 % of each hydrocolloid prepared by 90 % of fish and 10 % of an aqueous hydrocolloid dispersion were determined for HAs-levels after roasting. P-KC showed the strongest inhibitory effect against total HAs formation (20.95 %). Moreover, P-KC increased the content of creatinine and glucose but decreased the content of free amino acids in fish patties, indicating that P-KC may compete with creatinine and glucose to react with amino acids to suppress HAs generation. In addition, P-KC plus naringenin had a stronger inhibitory effect against HAs formation than P-KC or naringenin alone. P-KC at 1 % (w/w) and P-KC (0.5 %, w/w) plus naringenin (0.5 %, w/w) showed no significant effects on the color and textural properties compared to the control group (100 % fish), and had less impact on food quality than 1 % (w/w) KC. Therefore, our results suggest that chemical modification could enhance the inhibitory effect of some hydrocolloids on HAs formation, and an appropriate combination of hydrocolloids and flavonoids contributes to the attenuation of dietary exposure to genotoxic HAs.

Iron deficiency is a significant cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Treatment of IDA is challenging due to several challenges, including low target bioavailability, low palatability, poor pharmacokinetics, and extended therapeutic regimes. Nanotechnology holds the promise of revolutionizing the management and treatment of IDA. Smart biogenic engineered nanomaterials (BENMs) such as lipids, protein, carbohydrates, and complex nanomaterials have been the subject of extensive research and opened new avenues for people and the planet due to their enhanced physicochemical, rheological, optoelectronic, thermomechanical, biological, magnetic, and nutritional properties. Additionally, they show eco-sustainability, low biotoxicity, active targeting, enhanced permeation and retention, and stimuli-responsive characteristics. We examine the opportunities offered by emerging smart BENMs for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia by utilizing iron-fortified smart foods. We review the progress made so far and other future directions to maximize the impact of smart nanofortification on the global population. The toxicity effects are also discussed with commercialization challenges.

ABSTRACT

Asparagus species is recognized as a perennial herb with several valuable functional ingredients, and has been widely used as medicine and food since ancient times. Among its main chemical constituents, saponins play a vital role in the health benefits and biological activities including anti-cancer, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic. This review summarizes the preparation methods, structure and classification, biological functions, as well as the food and non-food applications of asparagus saponins, with a special emphasis on its anti-cancer effects in vitro and in vivo. Further, the main challenges and limitations of the current research trends in asparagus saponins are highlighted after a detailed analysis of the recent research information. This review bridges the gap between bioactive components and human health and aids current research on functional and health-promoting foods and medicinal application of Asparagus saponins.

In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of three soybean isoflavones and two soybean phytosterols on the formation of 3-chloropropane-1,2-diol fatty acid esters (3-MCPDE) and aldehydes in heated soybean oil model. 0.4 mM of genistin, genistein, daidzein, stigmasterol, and ß-sitosterol significantly reduced 3-MCPDE formation by 25.7, 51.4, 21.4, 61.6, and 55.7%, and total aldehydes formation by 42.03, 43.94, 28.36, 54.74, and 39.23%, respectively. Further study showed that stigmasterol reduced the content of glycidyl esters (GEs) and glycidol, two key intermediates of 3-MCPDE, and prevented fatty acids degradation in the oils. Moreover, the effects of continuous frying time on the content of stigmasterol and the migration of stigmasterol were evaluated in the fried dough sticks model system. The content of stigmasterol in soybean oil was found to be significantly decreased with prolonged heating time. The concentrations of stigmasterol in fried dough sticks and the migration rates of stigmasterol from soybean oil to fried dough sticks decreased with repeated frying sessions. In addition, stigmasterol undergoes oxidative changes during heat treatment, and the oxidation products including 5,6α-epoxystigmasterol, 5,6ß-epoxystigmasterol, 7α-hydroxystigmasterol, 7ß-hydroxystigmasterol, stigmasterlol-3ß,5α,6ß-triol, and 7-ketostigmasterol were identified in the frying oils but not in the fried dough sticks. Overall, stigmasterol could be added to soybean oil to reduce 3-MCPDE and aldehydes formation, and reacting with GEs/glycidol and protection of lipid acids from oxidation may be the mechanism of action of stigmasterol.
