ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) by a method of meta-analysis. China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched to collect relevant literature until March 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the bias risk of the literature included. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the prognostic value of LMR in PCa. Stata 15.0 statistical software was used for data analysis. A total of six published articles were included in this meta-analysis, containing 1,104 patients with PCa. The results of the meta-analysis indicated better overall survival (OS; HR = 1.73, 95% CI: 1.73, p = .001) and progression-free survival (PFS; HR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.58~4.38, p < .001) in patients with PCa with low LMR compared with high LMR. In conclusion, compared with low LMR, PCa patients with high LMR have a better prognosis. LMR is an independent risk factor affecting the long-term prognosis of patients with PCa. The detection of LMR before treatment is of certain significance in judging the clinical prognosis of patients with PCa.

ABSTRACT

Oral carcinoma, a prevalent malignancy of the oral cavity, often results in surgical site wounds post-resection. The therapeutic efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in wound healing and scar formation has garnered significant attention. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the role of PRF in promoting surgical site wound healing and reducing scar formation following oral carcinoma resection. A systematic search, adhering to PRISMA guidelines, was conducted across multiple databases. The primary outcomes assessed were the Landry, Turnbull and Howley (LTH) wound healing index and the Manchester scar scale (MSS). Statistical evaluations were performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Six studies were incorporated, involving 93 patients treated with PRF and 97 in the control group. For the LTH index, significant improvements in wound healing were observed in the PRF group with I2 = 74%, (Random: SMD: 3.70, 95% CIs: 2.66 to 4.75, p < 0.01). The Manchester scar scale assessment, which included 60 PRF-treated patients and 60 controls, indicated a significant reduction in scar formation in the PRF group I2 = 79%, (Random: SMD: 9.13, 95% CIs: 6.06 to 12.20, p < 0.01). PRF demonstrates promising therapeutic potential in enhancing surgical site wound healing and reducing scar formation post oral carcinoma resection. The application of PRF has been associated with improved wound healing metrics and diminished scar severity. However, further high-quality studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

ABSTRACT

Daqu is of great significance to the brewing process of Baijiu, and there are variations in the light-flavor Baijiu Daqu in different regions. However, few studies have been conducted on light-flavor Daqu from the north and south regions of China. In this study, the physicochemical indices, volatile flavor components, and microbial community structure of two types of Daqu from the north and south regions of China were comparatively analyzed. The study findings reveal that Daqu originating from the southern region of China (HB) exhibits superior moisture content, acidity, starch content, and saccharification power. In contrast, Daqu from the northern region of China (SX) displays higher fermentation, esterification, and liquefaction power. The analysis of the microbial community structure revealed that HB was dominated by Bacillus, Kroppenstedtia, Saccharomycopsis, and Thermoascus, while SX was dominated by Bacillus, Prevotella, and Saccharomycopsis. The analysis detected a total of 47 volatile components in both HB Daqu and SX Daqu. The volatile components of pyrazine were significantly more abundant in HB Daqu than in SX Daqu, while alcohol compounds were more prominent in SX Daqu than in HB Daqu. In addition, the RDA analysis established a correlation between dominant microorganisms and volatile components. Cyanobacteria, Fusobacteriota, Ascomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mucormyce exhibited positive correlations with a significant proportion of the key volatile compounds. This study establishes a scientific foundation for improving the quality of light-flavor Daqu liquor in different regions of China.

ABSTRACT

Esters were identified as the primary volatile flavor compounds in Chinese Baijiu, exerting a significant influence on its quality and aroma. This study focused on the yeast strain Pichia kudriavzevii, renowned for its high capacity to produce esters. Whole genome sequences were annotated and analyzed using the GO, KEGG, KOG, CAZy, and Pfam databases to determine the genetic basis underly the enhanced ester production capacity. Results showed that P. kudriavzevii gene function was concentrated in biosynthetic capacity, metabolic capacity, amino acid translocation capacity, glycoside hydrolysis capacity and transfer capacity. Additionally, acyltransferase and kinase were predicted as active sites contributing to P. kudriavzevii high ester production. We further compared the volatile composition differences between P. kudriavzevii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae through Headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), revealing P. kudriavzevii produced 3.5 times more esters than S. cerevisiae. Overall, our findings suggest that P. kudriavzevii had potential applications in the Baijiu brewing industry.

ABSTRACT

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC or KIRC) has a high mortality rate globally. It is necessary to identify biomarkers and investigate the mechanisms those biomarkers are associated with, to improve the prognosis of patients with KIRC. N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) affects the fate of modified RNA molecules and is involved in tumor progression. Different webservers were used in our research to investigate the mRNA transcription and clinical significance of YTHDF2 in KIRC. Survival analysis revealed that patients with elevated YTHDF2 transcription had a slightly longer OS and DFS than those with low YTHDF2 expression. YTHDF2 expression was shown to be significantly associated with the abundance of immune cells such as B cells, CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells. For a series of enrichment studies, we combined information on YTHDF2-binding molecules and expression-linked genes and identified the possible influence of "mRNA surveillance pathway," "RNA degradation," and "RNA transport" in the biology or pathogeny of KIRC. In addition, we identified multiple miRNA, kinase, and transcription factor targets of YTHDF2 in KIRC and constructed target networks. Overall, our findings show that YTHDF2 is a possible indicator of immune infiltration in the KIRC.

ABSTRACT

The nylon pocket concentration method and modified Kato-Katz technique were used to detect the eggs of intestinal parasites and the iodine smear method was used for the detection of protozoa among the rural population in West Dongting Lake region. The infection rate of parasites in 2006 was 11.84%, and it declined by 86.63%, 81.34%, and 47.28%, respectively, compared to the rates in 1983, 1993, and 2003. Six major parasites were detected including Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Fasciolopsis buski, hookworm, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia, and their infection rates were 8.60%, 6.41%, 1.75%, 0.14%, 2.50%, and 1.22%, respectively. The rate of multiple infections was 22.98%. The infection rates in the 5-9 years age group and 10-14 years age group were higher than those in other age groups.
