ABSTRACT

Hydrophobic coatings have wide applications, but face challenges in food flexible packaging in terms of poor adhesion and inadequate wear resistance. Health hazards and poor adhesion drive the search for novel hydrophobic coatings substitutes. Here, we introduced rationally synthesized carnauba wax-SiO2 microspheres as a component to composite polyethylene (PE) film construction, and created a wear-resistant hydrophobic composite PE film via the blown film technique. The resultant hydrophobic composite film demonstrated an enhanced water contact angle from 86° to above 100°, coupled with favorable mechanical properties such as wear resistance, tensile strength and effective barrier performance against water vapor and oxygen. Upon implementation in the preservation of a Cantonese delicacy, Chaoshan fried shrimp rolls, it was observed that at 25 °C, the carnauba wax-SiO2-PE composite packaging film extended the shelf life of the product by 3 days compared to pure PE film.

ABSTRACT

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a major tropical fruit, but a short postharvest life hampers marketing. The objective of this work is to assess the influence of a novel nanocomposite poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) film and Chitosan (CTS) affect on mango postharvest quality while stored at 20 °C. The results showed that the film coating treatment reduced the decay rate and weight loss of mangoes, maintaining good postharvest quality of mango fruit. The film coating treatment increased the antioxidant capacity of mangoes by inhibiting PPO activity and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. ACS, ACO, and ethylene release were all suppressed, as well as the expression of the ethylene receptors genes ETR1, ETR2, and ERS2, thus delaying mango aging. After harvest, the EVA treatment was superior to the CTS treatment in mango preservation.

ABSTRACT

Data on changes in non-volatile components and metabolic pathways during pork storage were inadequately investigated. Herein, an untargeted metabolomics coupled with random forests machine learning algorithm was proposed to identify the potential marker compounds and their effects on non-volatile production during pork storage by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). A total of 873 differential metabolites were identified based on analysis of variance (ANOVA). Bioinformatics analysis shows that the key metabolic pathways for protein degradation and amino acid transport are amino acid metabolism and nucleotide metabolism. Finally, 40 potential marker compounds were screened using the random forest regression model, innovatively proposing the key role of pentose-related metabolism in pork spoilage. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that d-xylose, xanthine, and pyruvaldehyde could be key marker compounds related to the freshness of refrigerated pork. Therefore, this study could provide new ideas for the identification of marker compounds in refrigerated pork.

ABSTRACT

In this study, one high-performance hemicelluloses (HC)-based sprayable and biodegradable pesticide mulch film was developed. Firstly, HC was transesterified with vinyl acetate (VA) to improve its solubility and film-forming ability. Then abamectin (ABA) was encapsulated by ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) to endow mulch film persistent anti-pesticide activity. After that, sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin were added to develop the mechanical performances of the mulch film. As a result, the obtained mulch film showed good characteristics, with optimum mechanical strength, elongation at break, water vapor permeability (WVP), swelling ratio (SR), and weight loss (biodegradability) of 7.9 ± 0.3 MPa, 43.6 ± 2.0 %, 2.1 ± 0.1 × 10-11 g mm m-2 s-1 kPa-1, 73.8 ± 2.0 %, and 69.3 %, respectively. After covering with mulch film, the soil moisture and temperature were developed to 90.8 % and 19.3 ± 0.2 °C, respectively, which could facilitate Chinese cabbage growth, with optimum germination rate of 98.6 ± 6.4 %.

ABSTRACT

Cellulose-based functional composite films can be a good substitute for conventional plastic packaging to ensure food safety. In this study, the semi-transparent, mechanical strengthened, UV-shielding, antibacterial and biocompatible films were developed from hydroxyethyl cellulose Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL) were respectively used as reinforcing agent and antibacterial agent, and chemical cross-linking among these three components were constructed using epichlorohydrin The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break were 95.9 ± 4.1 MPa and 148.8 ± 2.6%, respectively. TG-FTIR and XRD analyses indicated that chemical structure of the composite films could be well controlled by varying component proportion. From UV-Vis analysis, the optimum values of the percentage of blocking from UV-A and UV-B and ultraviolet protection factor values were 98.35%, 99.99% and 60.25, respectively. Additionally, the composite films exhibited good water vapor permeability, swelling behavior, antibacterial activity and biocompatibility. In terms of these properties, the shelf life of grapes could be extended to 6 days after packing with the composite film.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to prepare microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) films with good mechanical properties via plasticization using a Chinese leek (CL, Allium tuberosum) extract. The microstructure, crystal structure, mechanical properties, barrier ability, and thermal properties of the films were investigated. The chemical structure analysis of CL extract showed the existence of cellulose, lignin, and low-molecular-weight substances, such as polysaccharides, pectins, and waxes, which could act as plasticizers to enhance the properties of MCC:CL biocomposite films. The results of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses indicated the good compatibility between MCC and CL extract. When the volume ratio of MCC:CL was 7:3, the MCC:CL biocomposite film exhibited the best comprehensive performance in terms of water vapor permeability (2.11 × 10-10 g/m·s·Pa), elongation at break (13.2 ± 1.8%), and tensile strength (24.7 ± 2.5 MPa). The results of a UV absorption analysis demonstrated that the addition of CL extract improved the UV-shielding performance of the films. Therefore, this work not only proposes a facile method to prepare MCC films with excellent mechanical properties via plasticization using CL extract but also broadens the potential applications of MCC films in the packaging area.

ABSTRACT

Lemon essential oils (LEO), as natural bacteriostatic agents, show significant loss in the preparation processes of food packaging materials, therefore, an effective encapsulation of LEO is urgent for realizing the protection. In this study, LEO was absorbed by thermally stable and porous vermiculite (VML) to form LEO/VML complex, which is further coupled with konjac glucomannan-grafted-poly (acrylic acid)/polyvinyl alcohol (KGM-g-PAA/PVA) composite. KGM-g-PAA/PVA bacteriostatic water-absorbing pad was prepared via electrospinning technique, which can minimize the loss of LEO. The VML (1 g) can significantly reduce LEO loss and achieve sustained control LEO release from the pad, which follows the predominant mechanism of Fick diffusion law. The sustained control LEO release from the pad can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli during storage, thus prolonging shelf life of chilled pork for 3 day. This study suggests that KGM-g-PAA/PVA pad may have a great potential in the field of intelligent packaging.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties of chitosan (CS) based composite films with the incorporation of hemicelluloses (HC). Films were obtained via direct immersion method and characterized in terms of structural and morphological properties by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM and EDS. By combining with the increased HC loading efficiency (L) and swelling property (S) of films with the increased HC content to 5%, this study proved the increased hydrogen bond interactions between CS and HC. Films with the tensile strength of 32.81 ± 4.97 MPa and elongation at break of 39.63 ± 4.67% were obtained with 3% HC and 20% glycerol (GC). The water vapor permeability (WVP) of films developed with the increased HC and GC contents, while the oxygen permeability (OP) decreased. Moreover, antibacterial testing indicated that all films exhibited the increased growth inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus as increasing TiO2 content.

ABSTRACT

A novel nanocomposite poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) film with controlled in vitro release of iprodione (ID) was prepared. Chitosan (CS) was used as the reinforcement which enhances the water and oxygen permeability of films. ID loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL) (IPP) micelles were used as the drug carrier which endows the films with antifungal and controlled release ability. IPP micelles with spherical shape and uniform size were obtained, and the maximum encapsulation efficacy (EE) was 91.17 ± 5.03% by well controlling the feeding amount of ID. Incorporation CS could improve the oxygen and moisture permeability of films, and the maximum oxygen permeability (OP) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) were 477.84 ± 13.03 cc/(m2·d·0.1 MPa) and 8.60 ± 0.25 g m-2 d-1, respectively. After loading IPP micelles, the films showed an improved antifungal ability and temperature-sensitive drug release behavior, and were found to enhance the quality of grapes by pre-harvest spraying.

ABSTRACT

An alternative transesterification with vinyl laurate (VL) was applied for chemical modification of hemicelluloses (HC) to prepare functional packaging films. Successful transesterification was confirmed by FT-IR and NMR. Semitransparent laurated HC (LHs) films were prepared by solvent casting method. SEM indicated the ordered honeycomb-patterned surface and the dense cross section of LHs films. The LHs films exhibited excellent hydrophobicity with water contact angle about 120° and the enhanced mechanical properties with tensile strength and elongation at break as 33.94 ± 3.09 MPa and 22.41 ± 2.87%, respectively. The water vapor permeability (WVP) and oxygen permeability (OP) values of LHs films ranged from 1.59 ± 0.07 to 2.23 ± 0.11 (10-10·g/m·s·Pa) and 1.21 ± 0.04 to 4.24 ± 0.30 (cm3·µm/m2·d·kPa), respectively. Moreover, the films had acceptable antioxidant activity. In terms of these properties, the shelf life of green chilies could be largely extended to 15 days after packing with LHs films.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the molten salt hydrate of lithium bromide (LiBr) was utilized as a non-derivatizing cellulose dissolution solvent to prepare regenerated cellulose films for kraft pulp. The effects of LiBr concentrations (60, 62, and 65 wt %) and dissolving time (from 5 to 40 min with the interval of 5 min) on the structures and the properties of the films were investigated. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and cross-polarization magic-angle spinning carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS 13C NMR) characterizations verified the breakage of inter- and intra-cellulose hydrogen bonds during the regeneration, resulting in the disruption of the crystalline structure of cellulose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data indicated that the regeneration converted the polymorphism of cellulose from I to II as well as decreased its crystallinity. Ultraviolet-visible spectra (UV-Vis) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed the excellent optical transparency of the films to visible light due to the complete dissolution of cellulose fibers as well as the sufficient breaking of the inter- and intra-cellulose hydrogen bonds. In terms of tensile testing, tuning LiBr concentrations and dissolving time could increase the elongation at break and tensile strength of the films. The maximum elongation at break of 26% and tensile strength of 67 MPa were achieved when the films prepared in 65 wt % LiBr for 10 and 15 min, respectively. These results indicated the great potential of the cellulose films for packaging use.

ABSTRACT

Nanobrick wall hybrid coating with super oxygen barrier properties were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using a quadlayer (QL) assembly of polyelectrolytes and nanoplateles. A quadlayer assembly consists of three repeat units of polyacrylic acid (PAA), poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and layered α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). PDDA with positive charges can assemble alternatively with both α-ZrP and PAA with negative charges to form nanobrick wall architectures on the surface of PET film via the electrostatic interaction. The lamellar structure of α-ZrP platelets and the dense QL assembly coating can greatly reduce the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of PET film. Compared to pristine PET film, the OTR of PET (QL)19 is reduced from 57 to 0.87 cc/m²/day. Moreover, even with 19 QLs coating, PET (QL)19 composite film is still with an optical transparency higher than 90% and a haze lower than 10%. Therefore, the transparent PET (QL)n composite films with super oxygen barrier properties show great potential application in food packaging and flexible electronic packaging.
