ABSTRACT

Breast acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare subtype of breast cancer. Accurate diagnosis of ACC using core needle biopsy (CNB) is pivotal for the use of effective treatments and patient prognosis. In the present study, a detailed analysis of the morphological, immunohistochemical and gene mutation features of 2 cases of ACC was performed. CNB was performed prior to surgical excision. The breast ACC in the present cases exhibited overt burrowing labyrinthine networks or 'hand-holding-hand' features. The tumor cells in both of the present cases expressed cytokeratin (CK)7, S100 and CK5/6, but were negative for p63, estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor. GATA binding protein 3 was positive in case 1 but negative in case 2. Fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated no ETS variant transcription factor 6 break-apart probe detection. Next-generation sequencing results revealed the same mutation and a similar abundance in exon 27 (NM_005120.2; c.3817G>T; p.A1273S) of the mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription, subunit 12 homolog (MED12) gene in both patients. To conclude, the findings of the present study suggested that recognition of this rare 'hand-holding-hand' structure could potentially be beneficial for avoiding patient misdiagnosis. In addition, it could be suggested that a mutation in the MED12 exon 27 was associated with the formation of a burrowing labyrinthine network or 'hand-holding-hand' feature.

ABSTRACT

Black phosphorus (BP) is a graphene analogue with ultrafast broadband nonlinear optical properties that make it a promising nanomaterial for saturable absorption. However, BP nanoflakes chemically degrade in ambient conditions. We developed air- and photo-stable BP nanoflakes via incorporation in inorganic-organic hybrid matrices. This realized passivation and materialization through a sol-gel method that produced high-quality, transparent bulk materials. Saturable absorption parameters of the passivated BP were maintained after five months in ambient storage and after 8000 300 µJ nanosecond laser shots. The nonlinear absorption coefficient was still 62% after 12 months in open air, which was higher than that for non-passivated BP after three days. The stability was attributed to dense silica-gel glasses that enveloped the BP, essentially eliminating oxygen and water penetration. The simplicity of this approach may stimulate potential applications for environmentally sensitive high-performance solid-state devices.

ABSTRACT

The presence of malachite green dye in wastewater has a great negative impact on the environment. At present, industrial wastewater is treated using adsorption, electrolysis and membrane separation, among which the adsorption method is the most widely used wastewater treatment. In this study mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were prepared using the sol-gel method and modified with the natural polymer urushiol (U) to obtain MSN@Us, which have a core-shell structure. This is the first use of urushiol in dye adsorption. The structures and chemical properties of the MSNs and MSN@Us were characterized. The adsorption of malachite green by the MSNs and MSN@Us showed that the adsorption rate of MSN@Us was higher than that of MSNs, with an adsorption rate greater than 90%. This study provides a new research direction for the use of urushiol in the treatment of contaminated wastewater.

ABSTRACT

The Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by the progressive loss in renal function over a period. The progression of CKD will finally result the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Symptoms which needs permanent renal replacement therapies. Therefore, control the progression of CKD is necessary. In this study, based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Traditional Chinese Herbology, we developed the Kangshen Oral Solution based ona combination of different herbs for extraction. By utilizing adriamycin (ARD)-induced chronic renal failure in rats as the CKD model, our results demonstrated thatadministration of the Kangshen Oral Solution reduced the kidney disease induced weight loss in rats. The Kangshen Oral Solution could also relieve the proteinuria and kidney index induced by ARD which indicated the partially restoration of the kidney function. The improved kidney function was further supported by biochemical tests for blood total protein level, albumin level as well as cholesterol, triglycerides and Creatinine. Moreover, the histology examination also confirmed the ARD induced pathological changes in kidney was relieved by Kangshen Oral Solution. Taken together, these findings suggested Kangshen Oral solution could reduce ARD-induced nephropathy in rats model and may be employed as an alternative treatment for CKD patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To survey and promote the ability of military men to treat burns. METHODS: A total of 2200 military men were recruited to survey and examine their acknowledge and technique to treat burns, and then acknowledge and technique were taught to treat burns through multimedia and demonstration. One year later, the same subjects were surveyed again. RESULTS: Before the intervention, their ability was deficient (the mean score was 51). Their scores were significantly promoted after the intervention (the mean score was 75, P<0.01). Before and after the intervention, the service age, education and position had no effect on the score, but before the intervention, the navy's score was significantly better than the army's or the air force's (P>0.01). CONCLUSION: The ability of military men to treat burns needs to be improved for the potential hightech warfare.
