ABSTRACT

Here, we describe a new species of Crotalaria L. discovered in Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, China. The new species, Crotalariamenglaensis S.A.Rather, was confirmed by identifying diagnostic morphological characteristics, performing principal component analyses of phenotypic traits, and phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ITS and plastid matK sequences. Phylogenetic analyses recovered the two accessions of the new species to be sister to C.bracteata Roxb. ex DC. In turn, these two species formed the sister clade to the two accessions of C.incana L. The morphometric analyses revealed that all three species were distinct, while the analyses of distinctive characters enabled unambiguous distinction of the new species by its growth habit, leaflets, flower structure and pod morphology. In contrast to the two related species, the new species is currently known only from ca. 100 mature individuals. Thus, this species is considered to be critically endangered.

ABSTRACT

The beetle Triplax ainonia Lewis, 1877 is a serious pest of cultivated the mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus in China. The complete mitochondrial genome of this species was reported for the first time in this study. The mitogenome was 17,555 bp in length and had a base composition of 39.4% A, 36.1% T, 8.7% G and 15.3% C, which indicated that the base composition was AT-biased. Similar to other species of Coleoptera, the mitogenome of T. ainonia contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA unit genes, and a large noncoding region. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitogenomes suggested that the family Erotylidae was a monophyletic group.

ABSTRACT

Dipterocarpoideae, the largest subfamily of the Dipterocarpaceae, is a dominant component of Southeast Asian rainforests and is widely used as a source of wood, damar resin, medicine, and essential oil. However, many Dipterocarpoideae species are currently on the IUCN Red List owing to severe degradation of their habitats under global climate change and human disturbance. Genetic information regarding these taxa has only recently been reported with the sequencing of four Dipterocarp genomes, providing clues to the function and evolution of these species. Here, we report on 13 high-quality Dipterocarpoideae genome assemblies, ranging in size from 302.6 to 494.8 Mb and representing the five most species-rich genera in Dipterocarpoideae. Molecular dating analyses support the Western Gondwanaland origin of Dipterocarpaceae. Based on evolutionary analysis, we propose a three-step chromosome evolution scenario to describe the karyotypic evolution from an ancestor with six chromosomes to present-day species with 11 and 7 chromosomes. We discovered an expansion of genes encoding cellulose synthase (CesA), which is essential for cellulose biosynthesis and secondary cell-wall formation. We functionally identified five bornyl diphosphate synthase (BPPS) genes, which specifically catalyze the biosynthesis of borneol, a natural medicinal compound extracted from damar resin and oils, thus providing a basis for large-scale production of natural borneol in vitro.

ABSTRACT

Zhu et al. (2022) proposed the genus Megatachycines based on the description of a new species and the reviewed genus Microtachycines. In this study, a new species of Megatachycines, namely Megatachycines rectangularis sp. nov., from Guizhou Province, China is described. This new species is similar to Megatachycines elongatus, and the morphological differentiation between the two species is discussed. Morphological information including diagnosis of the new species, description of male genitalia, and some related photographs of males and females are provided.
