ABSTRACT

Level structures in the neutron-rich ^{144}Ba nucleus have been reinvestigated by measuring prompt γ rays in the spontaneous fission of ^{252}Cf. The previous s=+1 octupole band structure with reflection asymmetric shape has been expanded, and a side quadrupole band structure based on a 3^{+} state with reflection symmetric shape is identified. Thus, the results show the coexistence of reflection asymmetric and symmetric shapes in ^{144}Ba. This is a first identification of such a shape coexistence structure in a nuclear structure. The other structural characteristics are discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of determining the target vertebral body (TV) of uncompressed elderly osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures through measuring Hounsfield unit (HU) value. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Elderly patients with osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures aged above 65 years old hospitalized from 2015 to 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The cases whose TV could not be determined by computed tomography (CT) imaging but confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were selected. The mean HU values of the trabecular bone regions of TV and adjacent vertebral body in the multi-detector CT (MDCT) sagittal three-dimensional reconstructed image were measured and compared. At the same time, 60 thoracolumbar adjacent vertebral bodies without fractures were selected from 20 people, and the mean HU value of the trabecular bone region of each vertebra in the MDCT sagittal three-dimensional reconstructed image was measured and compared. RESULTS: There were correlations among the mean HU values of 60 thoracolumbar adjacent vertebral bodies in the 20 people without fractures, and there were no differences in the correlations between middle vertebral body (MV) and upper vertebral body (UV) and between MV and lower vertebral body (LV) compared with the correlation between UV and LV. In the 31 fracture cases, the mean HU values had correlations among TV, UV and LV, there was no difference in the comparison of correlations between TV and UV and between TV and LV, but the correlations between TV and UV and between TV and LV had differences compared with the correlation between UV and LV. CONCLUSIONS: The mean HU value of TV of uncompressed elderly osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures is increased abnormally compared with that of the adjacent vertebral body, and it is feasible to determine the TV of uncompressed osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures according to the mean HU value.

ABSTRACT

Two pairs of positive-and negative-parity doublet bands together with eight strong electric dipole transitions linking their yrast positive- and negative-parity bands have been identified in ^{78}Br. They are interpreted as multiple chiral doublet bands with octupole correlations, which is supported by the microscopic multidimensionally-constrained covariant density functional theory and triaxial particle rotor model calculations. This observation reports the first example of chiral geometry in octupole soft nuclei.

ABSTRACT

The arachidonic acid metabolizing enzymes, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5- lipoxygenase (5-LOX), are both highly expressed during the carcinogenesis in colons. Cigarette smoking promotes these carcinogenic processes at the early stage during adenoma formation. In this article, the involvement of COX-2 and 5-LOX, alongside with the dual COX/5-LOX inhibitors in colorectal cancer development is introduced. The co-regulation of 5-LOX and COX-2 in colon cancer growth and its relationship with cigarette smoke and hyaluronic acid-CD44v6 is also described. It is envisaged that dual inhibition of 5-LOX/COX could be the most promising therapeutic option for the treatment of colorectal cancer in humans.

ABSTRACT

We present a complete systematics (excitation functions and system-size dependences) of global stopping and side flow for heavy ion reactions in the energy range between 0.09A and 1.93A GeV. For the heaviest system, Au+Au, we observe a plateau of maximal stopping extending from about 0.2A to 0.8A GeV with a fast drop on both sides. The degree of stopping, which is shown to remain significantly below the expectations of a full stopping scenario, is found to be highly correlated to the amount of side flow.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effect of drilling procedure following the hydroxyapatite orbital implantation. METHODS: From February 1996 to April 2000, 146 consecutive patients who received hydroxyapatite orbital implant were drilled and inserted a motility peg 6 to 16 months after hydroxyapatite implantation. Among them, there were 97 males and 49 females, aged from 18 to 60 years old, of the 146 motility pegs, 36 were sleeved pegs and 110 were nonsleeved. Goldman visual field analyzer was applied to measure the degree of artificial eye's movement before and after drilling. RESULTS: Followed up for 1 to 40 months, no secondary infection occurred. The mobility of the prosthesis increased from (18.7 +/- 3.8) degrees preoperatively to (42.3 +/- 3.7) degrees postoperatively. CONCLUSION: The delayed drilling procedure and motility peg insertion improve the range of movement and the sensitivity of the artificial eye with a low rate of complications.

ABSTRACT

We comparatively studied the toxicity of iodophor, glutaradehyde and chlorhexidine in different concentration and time. The result shows that the toxicity of iodophor to L929 cells is the lowest in all kinds of drug concentration and action time is much lower than that of glutaradehyde and chlorhexidine(P<0.05) with prolonging time.It indicates that iodophor can be used to oral diseases therapy with lower concentration.
