ABSTRACT

Heterostructure engineering provides versatile platforms for exploring exotic physics and enhancing the device performance through interface coupling. Despite the rich array of physical phenomena presented by heterostructures composed of semiconductor and metal van der Waals materials, significant gaps remain in understanding their optical, thermal, and electronic properties. Here, we demonstrate that the valley pseudospin and electron-phonon coupling in monolayer WSe2 are significantly influenced by interface coupling with 1T-VSe2. The heterointerface alters the relaxation process of valley excitons, leading to a transition in magnetic-field-dependent valley polarization from a linear to a "V" shape. Furthermore, we uncover that enhanced electron-phonon coupling exacerbates variations in exciton and valley exciton behavior with temperature, involving higher phonon energies and a shift from acoustic to optical phonons. These findings highlight a promising pathway to manipulate valley excitons and investigate electron-phonon coupling through van der Waals interface interactions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is a highly aggressive and malignant tumor that arises from the malignant transformation of melanocytes. In light of the limitations of existing treatment modalities, there is a pressing need to identify new drug targets for SKCM. Aryl-hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator-like (ARNTL), also known as Bmal1, is a gene that has been linked to the onset and progression of cancer. However, its role in SKCM remains understudied. METHODS: The expression of Bmal1 mRNA and protein was detected using TCGA, GTEx, CCLE, and ULCAN databases. Moreover, survival analysis was performed to investigate the association between Bmal1 and immune invasion and gene expression in immune infiltrating cells via CIBERSORT, R programming, TIMER, Sangerbox, Kaplan-Meier. The study also explored the role of proteins associated with Bmal1 by using R programming and databases (STRING and GSEA). Both in vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to examine the potential role of Bmal1 in SKCM. RESULTS: Compared to normal tissues, the expression level of Bmal1 was significantly reduced in SKCM. Which has been associated with its poor prognosis. Similarly, its expression in SKCM was substantially correlated with immune infiltration, while biogenic analysis indicated that it could potentially influence the tumor immune microenvironment (TME) by influencing tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs). Moreover, Bmal1 overexpression suppressed the proliferation and invasion of melanoma cells and enhanced apoptosis, migration, and cell colony formation. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that Bmal1 is a novel biomarker that functions as both a diagnostic and prognostic indicator for the progression of SKCM.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic 2D materials offer a promising platform for manipulating quantum states at the nanoscale. Recent studies have underscored the significant influence of 2D magnetic materials on the optical behaviors of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), revealing phenomena such as interlayer exciton-magnon interactions, magnetization-dependent valley polarization, and an enhanced Zeeman effect. However, the controlled manipulation of anisotropic optical properties in TMDs via magnetism remains challenging. Here, the magnetic ordering in FePS3 profoundly impacts the optical characteristics of WSe2, achieving a giant linear polarization degree of 5.1 in exciton emission is demonstrated. This is supported by a detailed analysis of low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra from nL-FePS3/WSe2 heterostructures. These findings indicate that a phase transition in FePS3 from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic enhances interlayer Coulomb interactions, inducing a transition from non-polar to polar behavior in the heterostructures. Additionally, valley-polarized PL spectra under magnetic fields from -9 to 9 T reveal the influence of FePS3 on valley polarization and Zeeman splitting of excitons in monolayer WSe2. These results present a novel strategy for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of 2D magnetic van der Waals heterostructures, paving the way for advancements in nanoscale device design.

ABSTRACT

Efficient drinking water disinfection methods are critical for public health. Locally enhanced electric field treatment (LEEFT) is an antimicrobial method that uses sharp structures, like metallic nanowires, to enhance the electric field at tips and cause bacteria inactivation. Electroporation is the originally designed mechanism of LEEFT. Although oxidation is typically undesired due to byproduct generation and electrode corrosion, it can enhance the overall disinfection efficiency. In this work, we conduct an operando investigation of LEEFT, in which we change the electrical parameters to tune the mechanisms between electrophysical electroporation and electrochemical oxidation. Pure electroporation (i.e., without detectable oxidation) could be achieved under a duty cycle of ≤0.1% and a pulse width of ≤2 µs. Applying 2 µs pulses at 7-8 kV/cm and 0.1% duty cycle results in 80-100% bacteria inactivation with pure electroporation. A higher chance of oxidation is found with a higher duty cycle and a longer pulse width, where the antimicrobial efficiency could also be enhanced. For water with a higher conductivity, a higher antimicrobial efficiency can be achieved under the same treatment conditions, and electrochemical reactions could be induced more easily. The findings shown in this work improve the fundamental understanding of LEEFT and help optimize the performance of LEEFT in real applications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In China, Tongluo-Qutong rubber plaster (TQRP) is commonly used for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, but lacks high-quality trials. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a multicenter, open-label, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial in China to investigate the practical efficacy and safety of TQRP in the treatment of CSR. METHODS: A total of 240 patients diagnosed with CSR were recruited for the investigation from multiple hospitals in Gansu province, China. The patients were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group received treatment with TQRP, whereas the control group was administered a diclofenac sodium patch (DSP) for a maximum duration of 21 days. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score for pain, the proportion of patients experiencing 50% or more pain relief, the neck disability index (NDI), changes as per the Eaton trial, and recurrence during the follow-up period were evaluated for both groups. The safety and adverse events associated with the concurrent drug therapy were also evaluated. RESULTS: At each time point, the mean VAS and NDI scores of both groups demonstrated a downward trend. The experimental group exhibited a greater decline in VAS score at each time point compared to the control group (P< 0.01). In the Eaton trial, both the percentage of patients experiencing pain relief of 50% or more and the number of abnormal results exhibited improvement. However, the outcomes in the 21 ± 3d experimental group were significantly superior to those in the control group (P< 0.01). During the follow-up period, the recurrence events in the experimental group were reduced compared to the control group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P< 0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions was 1.74% for TQRP and 3.54% for DSP. CONCLUSION: TQRP is effective and safe in the treatment of CSR.

ABSTRACT

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an indispensable role in the occurrence and development of ovarian cancer (OC). However, the potential involvement of lncRNAs in the progression of OC is largely unknown. To investigate the detailed roles and mechanisms ofRAD51 homolog B-antisense 1 (RAD51B-AS1), a novel lncRNA in OC, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was performed to verify the expression of RAD51B-AS1. Cellular proliferation, metastasis, and apoptosis were detected using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), colony-formation, transwell, and flow cytometry assays. Mouse xenograft models were established for the detection of tumorigenesis. The results revealed that RAD51B-AS1 was significantly upregulated in a highly metastatic human OC cell line and OC tissues. RAD51B-AS1 significantly increased the proliferation and metastasis of OC cells and enhanced their resistance to anoikis. Biogenetics prediction analysis revealed that the only target gene of RAD51B-AS1 was RAD51B. Subsequent gene function experiments revealed that RAD51B exerts the same biological effects as RAD51B-AS1. Rescue experiments demonstrated that the malignant biological behaviors promoted by RAD51B-AS1 overexpression were partially or completely reversed by RAD51B silencing in vitro and in vivo. Thus, RAD51B-AS1 promotes the malignant biological behaviors of OC and activates the protein kinase B (Akt)/B cell lymphoma protein-2 (Bcl-2) signaling pathway, and these effects may be associated with the positive regulation of RAD51B expression. RAD51B-AS1 is expected to serve as a novel molecular biomarker for the diagnosis and prediction of poor prognosis in OC, and as a potential therapeutic target for disease management.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the status of family functioning and dissatisfaction of family function from the perception of adolescents with affective disorders and explore associated factors. Methods: This was a multicentric cross-sectional study conducted from April 2022 to February 2023. Adolescents with affective disorders were surveyed in representative samples drawn from three hospitals in Sichuan province, China. Data were obtained from 235 participants regarding their demographic characteristics, family characteristics, disease-related characteristics, and family functioning. Results: The study found family functioning and its' dissatisfaction both lower than national norms from the perspectives of adolescents. Younger age, single-parent family, and reconstituted family were predictors of not close of cohesion. Younger age, lower educational level of father, and reconstituted family were associated with less change of flexibility. Less times of hospitalizations, higher educational level of father, stem family were more satisfy with cohesion. Higher educational level of father, and stem family were also associated with greater satisfaction with flexibility. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the family function of adolescents of affective disorders was poor, more attention should be paid to it. Age, family structure, number of hospitalizations and the educational level of father were influencing factors of family functioning. Therefore, it is important for medical worker to assess demographic and family characteristics of adolescents with affective disorders. Younger children, children of reconstituted family and single-parent family, children with repeated hospitalizations and fathers of lower level of education should be given emphasized in implementation of interventions. Based on the evaluation results, personalized family therapy has been proved to be an affective measure and could be used in clinical work.

ABSTRACT

The interaction between light and moiré superlattices presents a platform for exploring unique light-matter phenomena. Tailoring these optical properties holds immense potential for advancing the utilization of moiré superlattices in photonics, optoelectronics, and valleytronics. However, the control of the optical polarization state in moiré superlattices, particularly in the presence of moiré effects, remains elusive. Here, we unveil the emergence of optical anisotropy in moiré superlattices by constructing twisted WSe2/WSe2/SiP heterostructures. We report a linear polarization degree of ∼70% for moiré excitons, attributed to the spatially nonuniform charge distribution, corroborated by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, we demonstrate the modulation of this linear polarization state via the application of a magnetic field, resulting in polarization angle rotation and a magnetic-field-dependent linear polarization degree, influenced by valley coherence and moiré potential effects. Our findings demonstrate an efficient strategy for tuning the optical polarization state of moiré superlattices using heterointerface engineering.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Cholestasis induces severe liver injury and subsequent liver fibrosis. However, a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between liver fibrosis and cholestasis-induced changes in metabolites in the gut and fibrotic liver tissue and in the gut microbiota is insufficient. METHODS: Common bile duct ligation (BDL) was employed to establish a cholestatic liver fibrosis model in mice for 26 days. Fibrotic liver tissue and the gut contents were collected. Untargeted metabolomics was conducted for the determination of metabolites in the gut contents and liver tissues. Metagenomics was adopted to explore the gut microbiota. RESULTS: The metabolites in the gut contents and liver tissues between normal and cholestatic liver fibrosis mice were highly distinct. Beta-alanine metabolism and glutathione metabolism were downregulated in the gut of the BDL group. Galactose metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and ABC transporters were upregulated in the gut and downregulated in the liver of the BDL group. Arginine biosynthesis, taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and primary bile acid biosynthesis were downregulated in the gut and upregulated in the liver of the BDL group. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the alpha diversity of the microbiota in the BDL group decreased. The altered structure of the gut microbiota in the BDL group led to the hypofunction of important metabolic pathways (such as folate biosynthesis, histidine metabolism, thiamine metabolism, biotin metabolism, and phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis) and enzymes (such as NADH, DNA helicase, and DNA-directed DNA polymerase). Correlation analyses indicated that certain gut microbes were associated with gut and liver metabolites. CONCLUSIONS: Untargeted metabolomics and metagenomics provided comprehensive information on gut and liver metabolism and gut microbiota in mice with cholestatic liver fibrosis. Therefore, significantly altered bacteria and metabolites may help provide some targets against cholestatic liver fibrosis in the future.

ABSTRACT

A widely applicable original gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was explored to qualitatively and quantitatively measure enrofloxacin and ofloxacin residues in chicken tissues and pork. The experimental samples were processed based on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE). Trimethylsilyl diazomethane (TMSD) was chosen to react derivatively with enrofloxacin and ofloxacin. In total, 78.25% âˆ¼ 90.56% enrofloxacin and 78.43% âˆ¼ 91.86% ofloxacin was recovered from the blank fortified samples. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.7-1.0 µg/kg and 0.1-0.2 µg/kg, respectively. The limits of quantitation (LOQs) were 1.6-1.9 µg/kg and 0.3-0.4 µg/kg, respectively. It was verified that various experimental data met the requirements of the FAO & WHO (2014) for the detection of veterinary drug residues. Real samples obtained from local markets were analysed using the established method, and no residues of enrofloxacin or ofloxacin were detected in the samples.

BACKGROUND: Sheep and goats have undergone domestication and improvement to produce similar phenotypes, which have been greatly impacted by structural variants (SVs). Here, we report a high-quality chromosome-level reference genome of Asiatic mouflon, and implement a comprehensive analysis of SVs in 897 genomes of worldwide wild and domestic populations of sheep and goats to reveal genetic signatures underlying convergent evolution. RESULTS: We characterize the SV landscapes in terms of genetic diversity, chromosomal distribution and their links with genes, QTLs and transposable elements, and examine their impacts on regulatory elements. We identify several novel SVs and annotate corresponding genes (e.g., BMPR1B, BMPR2, RALYL, COL21A1, and LRP1B) associated with important production traits such as fertility, meat and milk production, and wool/hair fineness. We detect signatures of selection involving the parallel evolution of orthologous SV-associated genes during domestication, local environmental adaptation, and improvement. In particular, we find that fecundity traits experienced convergent selection targeting the gene BMPR1B, with the DEL00067921 deletion explaining ~10.4% of the phenotypic variation observed in goats. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide new insights into the convergent evolution of SVs and serve as a rich resource for the future improvement of sheep, goats, and related livestock.

ABSTRACT

IV-V two-dimensional materials have emerged as key contenders for polarization-sensitive and angle-resolved devices, given their inherent anisotropic physical properties. While these materials exhibit intriguing high-pressure quasi-particle behavior and phase transition, the evolution of quasi-particles and their interactions under external pressure remain elusive. Here, employing a diamond anvil cell and spectroscopic measurements coupled with first-principles calculations, we unveil rarely observed pressure-induced phonon-phonon coupling in layered SiP flakes. This coupling manifests as an anomalous phonon hardening behavior for the A1 mode within a broad wavenumber phonon softening region. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effective tuning of exciton emissions in SiP flakes under pressure, revealing a remarkable 63% enhancement in the degree of polarization (DOP) within the pressure range of 0-3.5 GPa. These findings contribute to our understanding of high-pressure phonon evolution in SiP materials and offer a strategic approach to manipulate the anisotropic performance of in-plane anisotropic 2D materials.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Patients with gout are at risk for increased serum uric acid (SUA) levels and gout attacks in the short term after undergoing bariatric surgery, and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the benefits of short-term treatment with uric acid-lowering medication after bariatric surgery for the control of gout attacks and SUA levels in patients with gout. METHODS: 71 patients who underwent SG from January 2020 to December 2022 were prospectively included. These patients were diagnosed with hyperuricemia before surgery and had a history of gout attacks. Patients were classified into a drug-treatment group (DTG, n = 32) and a non-drug-treatment group (NDTG, n = 39) according to whether they took uric acid-lowering medication after surgery. Changes in the number of gout attacks, body mass index (BMI), and SUA levels at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after bariatric surgery were measured in both groups. RESULTS: In the DTG, 22 patients (68.8%) experienced an increase in SUA within 1 week, 3 patients (9.4%) had an acute attack of gout within the first month, and no patients had a gout attack thereafter. In the NDTG, 35 patients (89.7%) experienced an increase in SUA within 1 week, 7 patients (17.9%) had an acute gout attack within the first month, and 4 patients (10.3%) experienced gout attacks between month 1 and month 3 postoperatively. Both groups were free of gout attacks between the 3rd and 6th postoperative month and showed a significant decrease in SUA and BMI by the sixth month. CONCLUSION: In patients with gout, continued use of uric acid-lowering medication after bariatric surgery is beneficial in reducing the number of gout attacks and the risk of rising SUA.

BACKGROUND: The BCL2 interacting protein 3-like (BNIP3L) protein is involved in multiple myeloma (MM) development and progression. This study aims to explore the connection between BNIP3L single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and MM. METHODS: SNaPshot was used to examine six SNP loci of the BNIP3L gene in enrolled subjects. The relationship between these loci and MM susceptibility and prognosis was explored. Survival analysis was used to evaluate the impact of different factors on patient survival. RESULTS: The rs2874670 AA genotype and A allele were associated with increased MM risk (P < 0.05). The CCACAC haplotype had a higher frequency in MM, while CCGCAC had a higher frequency in normal patients (all P < 0.05). Patients with R-ISS stage I and II had higher survival rates than those with stage III (P < 0.05). Patients, who received chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation, had longer survival time than those who only received chemotherapy (P < 0.05). Low levels of LDH and ß2-MG were associated with better survival rates (P < 0.05). Cox regression identified that LDH levels, ß2-MG levels, and R-ISS staging were the risk factors for the death of MM. Mann-Whitney U test found a significant difference in survival time between MM patients with different BNIP3L rs2874670 genotypes after BD chemotherapy (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study to find that BNIP3L rs2874670 could increase MM susceptibility in China. Different BNIP3L rs2874670 genotypes may affect the prognosis of MM patients receiving BD chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most lethal malignant gastrointestinal tumors (GI) characterized by a poor prognosis. Ferroptosis is an emerging programmed cell death that plays an essential role in the progression of various cancers. Ferroptosis is driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation and is regulated by mitochondrial activity, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The function and mechanism of ferroptosis in PC need more research. METHODS: The levels of circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Western blot was used for protein detection. CCK8 assays were used to detect cell proliferation. Cell death, lipid peroxidation, ROS, and Fe2+ were detected by indicted kits. Dual-luciferase reporter and RNA pull-down assays were conducted to confirm the interaction between circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs. RESULTS: In this research, we found that circular RNA hsa_circ_0000003(circ_WASF2) was upregulated in pancreatic cancer cells. The silence of circ_WASF2 inhibited cancer proliferation and increased cell death by increasing ferroptosis accompanied by up-regulation of lipid peroxidation, ROS, and Fe2+. Further studies showed that circ_WASF2 could attenuate ferroptosis by targeting miR-634 and the downstream glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4). GPX4 has been well-reported as a central factor in ferroptosis. Our research revealed a new pathway for regulating ferroptosis in PC. CONCLUSION: In summary, we have determined that circ_WASF2/miR-634/GPX4 contributed to ferroptosis-induced cell death, and provided a possible therapeutic target in PC.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The prospective phase III multi-centre L-MOCA trial (NCT03534453) has demonstrated the encouraging efficacy and manageable safety profile of olaparib maintenance therapy in the Asian (mainly Chinese) patients with platinum-sensitive relapsed ovarian cancer (PSROC). In this study, we report the preplanned exploratory biomarker analysis of the L-MOCA trial, which investigated the effects of homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression on olaparib efficacy. METHODS: HRD status was determined using the ACTHRD assay, an enrichment-based targeted next-generation sequencing assay. PD-L1 expression was assessed by SP263 immunohistochemistry assay. PD-L1 expression positivity was defined by the PD-L1 expression on ≥ 1% of immune cells. Kaplan-Meier method was utilised to analyse progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS: This exploratory biomarker analysis included 225 patients and tested HRD status [N = 190; positive, N = 125 (65.8%)], PD-L1 expression [N = 196; positive, N = 56 (28.6%)], and BRCA1/2 mutation status (N = 219). The HRD-positive patients displayed greater median PFS than the HRD-negative patients [17.9 months (95% CI: 14.5-22.1) versus 9.2 months (95% CI: 7.5-13.8)]. PD-L1 was predominantly expressed on immune cells. Positive PD-L1 expression on immune cells was associated with shortened median PFS in the patients with germline BRCA1/2 mutations [14.5 months (95% CI: 7.4-18.2) versus 22.2 months (95% CI: 18.3-NA)]. Conversely, positive PD-L1 expression on immune cells was associated with prolonged median PFS in the patients with wild-type BRCA1/2 [20.9 months (95% CI: 13.9-NA) versus 8.3 months (95% CI: 6.7-13.8)]. CONCLUSIONS: HRD remained an effective biomarker for enhanced olaparib efficacy in the Asian patients with PSROC. Positive PD-L1 expression was associated with decreased olaparib efficacy in the patients with germline BRCA1/2 mutations but associated with improved olaparib efficacy in the patients with wild-type BRCA1/2. ABSTRACT

The instability of viral targets including SARS-CoV-2 in sewage is an important challenge in wastewater monitoring projects. The unrecognized interruptions in the 'cold-chain' transport from the sample collection to RNA quantification in the laboratory may undermine the accurate quantification of the virus. In this study, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-modified porous superabsorbent polymer (PSAP) beads were applied to absorb raw sewage samples as a simple method for viral RNA preservation. The preservation efficiency for SARS-CoV-2 and pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) RNA were examined during storage for 14 days at 4 °C or room temperature against the control (no beads applied). While a non-significant difference was observed at 4 °C (∼80 % retention for both control and PSAP-treated sewage), the reduction of SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations was significantly lower in sewage retrieved from PSAP beads (25-40 % reduction) compared to control (>60 % reduction) at room temperature. On the other hand, the recovery of PMMoV, known for its high persistence in raw sewage, from PSAP beads or controls were consistently above 85 %, regardless of the storage temperature. Our results demonstrate the applicability of PSAP beads to wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) projects for preservation of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in sewage, especially in remote settings with no refrigeration capabilities.

ABSTRACT

Tanshinones are bioactive ingredients derived from the herbal plant Salvia miltiorrhiza and are used for treating diseases of the heart and brain, thus ensuring quality of S. miltiorrhiza is paramount. Applying the endophytic fungus Trichoderma atroviride D16 can significantly increase the content of tanshinones in S. miltiorrhiza, but the potential mechanism remains unknown. In the present study, the colonization of D16 effectively enhanced the levels of Ca2+ and H2O2 in the roots of S. miltiorrhiza, which is positively correlated with increased tanshinones accumulation. Further experiments found that the treatment of plantlets with Ca2+ channel blocker (LaCl3) or H2O2 scavenger (DMTU) blocked D16-promoted tanshinones production. LaCl3 suppressed not only the D16-induced tanshinones accumulation but also the induced Ca2+ and H2O2 generation; nevertheless, DMTU did not significantly inhibit the induced Ca2+ biosynthesis, implying that Ca2+ acted upstream in H2O2 production. These results were confirmed by observations that S. miltiorrhiza treated with D16, CaCl2, and D16+LaCl3 exhibit H2O2 accumulation and influx in the roots. Moreover, H2O2 as a downstream signal of Ca2+ is involved in D16 enhanced tanshinones synthesis by inducing the expression of genes related to the biosynthesis of tanshinones, such as DXR, HMGR, GGPPS, CPS, KSL and CYP76AH1 genes. Transcriptomic analysis further supported that D16 activated the transcriptional responses related to Ca2+ and H2O2 production and tanshinones synthesis in S. miltiorrhiza seedlings. This is the first report that Ca2+ and H2O2 play important roles in regulating fungal-plant interactions thus improving the quality in the D16-S. miltiorrhiza system.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a pathological condition characterized by a series of abnormal physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms. We evaluated the effectiveness of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in the treatment of patients with obesity and PMS. METHODS: In this case-control study, 131 patients with obesity (BMI ≥ 27.5 kg/cm2) diagnosed with moderate-to-severe PMS from March 2018 to March 2022 were prospectively selected to undergo LSG or not at their own discretion. Participants self-reported their PMS severity using the Premenstrual Syndrome Screening Tool. Among them, 68 patients chose LSG surgery, and 63 control group patients were followed up without surgery. Data were recorded at baseline and at 3 months post-treatment. We used a multivariate analysis to assess the improvement in PMS symptoms and associated factors. RESULTS: Of the 131 patients with obesity and PMS, the improvement rate of PMS in the LSG group was 57.35% (n = 39), while the improvement rate of PMS in the control group was 25.40% (n = 16). Furthermore, our study revealed that surgery is an independent factor affecting the improvement of patients with PMS. Additionally, there was a correlation between alcohol use, T2DM and obesity-related metabolic diseases, and BMI with PMS. The changes in BMI, testosterone, and estradiol(E2) levels may also contribute to the improvement of patients with obesity and PMS. CONCLUSION: LSG can improve the management of obesity in patients with PMS to some extent. Changes in BMI, testosterone, and E2 may be indicative of improvement in patients with obesity and PMS.
