ABSTRACT

Background: Prostatectomy often causes urinary incontinence, especially stress Urinary incontinence, which has a serious impact on the quality of life of patients. Previous studies have proved that pelvic floor muscle training can help restore pelvic floor function and reduce Urinary incontinence, but the quantitative evaluation and systematic analysis of its effect have not yet been clear. This meta-analysis aimed to systematically evaluate the therapeutic effect of pelvic floor muscle training on managing stress urinary incontinence after prostatectomy. Methods: The literature on pelvic floor muscle training for patients after prostatectomy was searched in PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, and China Biology Medical Literature Database (CBM) from database establishment up to January 30th, 2023. Risk bias assessment was conducted using RoB1, a risk assessment tool recommended by Cochrane for evaluating RCTs literature. Publication bias was evaluated through funnel plots. Meta-analysis of effect size was performed using R 4.2.2. Results: Eleven randomized controlled studies were included. The risk of bias assessment showed that three studies had a moderate risk of bias and eight had a low risk. The meta-analysis results showed that the patient-reported incontinence was improved after one month [odds ratio (OR): 2.71, 95% 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.86-3.94, P<0.01]; improved after three months (OR: 3.42, 95% CI: 1.96-5.98, P<0.01); improved after six months (OR: 3.77, 95% CI: 1.51-9.41, P<0.01); improved after 12 months (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.11-1.31, P<0.01); and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Simple Form (ICIQ-SF) score decreased [mean difference (MD): -2.74, 95% CI: -4.96 to -0.52, P=0.02]. Subgroup analysis showed that the ICIQ-SF score decreased after one month (MD: -0.61, 95% CI: -0.81 to -0.40) and three months (MD: -3.43, 95% CI: -6.85 to -0.02). Conclusions: Pelvic floor muscle training significantly improves stress urinary incontinence after prostatectomy, which can be improved by 2.77 times at most. However, due to the limited number of studies included, further validation is needed.

ABSTRACT

Wind speed prediction is very important in the field of wind power generation technology. It is helpful for increasing the quantity and quality of generated wind power from wind farms. By using univariate wind speed time series, this paper proposes a hybrid wind speed prediction model based on Autoregressive Moving Average-Support Vector Regression (ARMA-SVR) and error compensation. First, to explore the balance between the computation cost and the sufficiency of the input features, the characteristics of ARMA are employed to determine the number of historical wind speeds for the prediction model. According to the selected number of input features, the original data are divided into multiple groups that can be used to train the SVR-based wind speed prediction model. Furthermore, in order to compensate for the time lag introduced by the frequent and sharp fluctuations in natural wind speed, a novel Extreme Learning Machine (ELM)-based error correction technique is developed to decrease the deviations between the predicted wind speed and its real values. By this means, more accurate wind speed prediction results can be obtained. Finally, verification studies are conducted by using real data collected from actual wind farms. Comparison results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better prediction results than traditional approaches.

ABSTRACT

A scheme is proposed for the identification of surface intrusion events, from signals detected by an ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating array in a subway tunnel. The spectral subtraction and the root mean square of the power spectral density are combined to extract event signals. The local characteristics-scale decomposition and the multi-scale permutation entropy are employed subsequently for feature extraction, which can improve the event recognition rate from the perspective of multi-scale analysis. Experimental demonstration verifies that the proposed scheme can identify four common events. Among the events, the discrete pulse construction and the continuous pulse construction on the ground surface are intrusion events, the subway train traveling in the tunnel and the lorry passing on the ground surface are non-intrusion events. The average recognition rate of 96.57% is achieved, which can satisfy actual application requirements.

ABSTRACT

This work demonstrates a novel method for rapid determination of total solid content in viscous liquid (polymer-enriched) samples. The method is based multiple headspace extraction gas chromatography (MHE-GC) on a headspace vial at a temperature above boiling point of water. Thus, the trend of water loss from the tested liquid due to evaporation can be followed. With the limited MHE-GC testing (e.g., 5 extractions) and a one-point calibration procedure (i.e., recording the weight difference before and after analysis), the total amount of water in the sample can be determined, from which the total solid contents in the liquid can be calculated. A number of black liquors were analyzed by the new method which yielded results that closely matched those of the reference method; i.e., the results of these two methods differed by no more than 2.3%. Compared with the reference method, the MHE-GC method is much simpler and more practical. Therefore, it is suitable for the rapid determination of the solid content in many polymer-containing liquid samples.

ABSTRACT

The aims of the study were to determine whether restricted single-item or multi-item testmeals are better able to detect prior changes in hunger and fullness when assessing ad libitum eating behaviour. Thirty male participants were given a low- (L(E), 0.5 MJ) or high-energy (H(E), 4.0 MJ) breakfast preload designed to induce or suppress hunger, followed 3h later by a restricted-item (R(I)) or multi-item (M(I)) testmeal. The R(I) testmeal comprised pasta+meat sauce, whilst the M(I) testmeal comprised pasta+meat sauce plus bread, chicken, ham, cheese, salad, cake and fruit. The four conditions were (i) L(E)/R(I); (ii) L(E)/M(I); (iii) H(E)/R(I); (iv) H(E)/M(I). Visual analogue scales (VAS) were used to rate appetite sensations and EI was measured at the lunch testmeal. As expected, increasing the energy content of the preload significantly altered VAS ratings and decreased EI at the testmeal. Following both L(E) and H(E) breakfasts, EI was lower at the R(I) (L(E)=4566 kJ, H(E)=3583 kJ) compared with the M(I) (L(E)=6142 kJ, H(E)=5149 kJ) testmeal. However, the compensatory decrease in EI in response to the H(E) breakfast was not significantly greater at the R(I) testmeal (R(I): -983 kJ, 28.1% compensation; M(I): -993 kJ, 28.4% compensation). In preload studies measuring EI, increasing the variety of an ad lib testmeal may not decrease the sensitivity to detect changes in hunger and fullness.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To determine the effect of low-dose whey protein-enriched water beverages on postprandial satiety and energy intake (EI). METHODS: Fifty overweight and mildly obese women were given 500 mL water-based beverages on 4 different occasions in a double blind, cross-over study. The beverages were reasonably matched for colour, flavour, sweetness and contained 0% (water control, 0 g, 8 kJ), 1% (5 g, 93 kJ), 2% (10 g, 178 kJ) and 4% (20 g, 348 kJ) whey protein by weight (ClearProtein8855™). Following a standard evening meal and breakfast, beverages were consumed 120 min before an ad libitum lunch at which EI was measured. Feelings associated with hunger and fullness were also measured using visual analogue scales (VAS). RESULTS: 46 participants completed all 4 beverage conditions. There was a significant effect of beverage preload on hunger (beverage×time; P=0.0074), where each of the 1%, 2% and 4% w/w protein beverages decreased hunger compared to the water control (P<0.05). Suppression of hunger was also maintained for longer following the protein beverages (Friedman test, P=0.013). Fullness (beverage×time; P=0.0020) and satisfaction (beverage×time; P=0.0356) were both increased by the 1% and 4% protein beverages (P<0.05). EI at lunch decreased by up to 8 percent (control vs 4% protein, delta=-247 kJ, Tukey's post hoc, P>0.05) when escalating protein doses were added to the water preload (water control, 3028 kJ; 1%, 3080 kJ; 2%, 2924 kJ; 4%, 2781 kJ), only partial compensation for the added energy. CONCLUSIONS: These low-dose, whey protein-enriched water beverages significantly altered short term postprandial satiety, however the effect was not sufficient to impact on food intake when assessed 2 h after consumption.
