ABSTRACT

Stephan's Quintet (SQ, co-moving radial distance = 85 ± 6 Mpc, taken from the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED)1) is unique among compact groups of galaxies2-12. Observations have previously shown that interactions between multiple members, including a high-speed intruder galaxy currently colliding into the intragroup medium, have probably generated tidal debris in the form of multiple gaseous and stellar filaments6,8,13, the formation of tidal dwarfs7,14,15 and intragroup-medium starbursts16, as well as widespread intergalactic shocked gas5,10,11,17. The details and timing of the interactions and collisions remain poorly understood because of their multiple nature18,19. Here we report atomic hydrogen (H I) observations in the vicinity of SQ with a smoothed sensitivity of 1σ = 4.2 × 1016 cm-2 per channel (velocity bin-width Δv = 20 km s-1; angular resolution = 4'), which are about two orders of magnitude deeper than previous observations8,13,20,21. The data show a large H I structure (with linear scale of around 0.6 Mpc) encompassing an extended source of size approximately 0.4 Mpc associated with the debris field and a curved diffuse feature of length around 0.5 Mpc attached to the south edge of the extended source. The diffuse feature was probably produced by tidal interactions in early stages of the formation of SQ (>1 Gyr ago), although it is not clear how the low-density H I gas (NH i ≲ 1018 cm-2) can survive the ionization by the intergalactic ultraviolet background on such a long time scale. Our observations require a rethinking of properties of gas in outer parts of galaxy groups and demand complex modelling of different phases of the intragroup medium in simulations of group formation.

ABSTRACT

This paper aimed to analyze the clinical effects of Xianling Gubao capsules on the bone mineral density (BMD) of 94 patients with osteoporosis. After reviewing and analyzing the clinical information in our hospital from January 2015 to January 2016, the patients were divided into a control group and a treatment group with 47 cases in each group. Patients in the control group were treated with routine Western medicine, while the treatment group received Xianling Gubao capsules. Both groups were treated continuously for 3 courses (30 days each course) and had their BMD analyzed and compared. The effective rates of the treatment group and control group were 91.48% and 70.21%, respectively, with statistical significance (P less than 0.05). Compared with the same group before the treatment, the bone metabolic indexes (blood calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphate) and the BMD of the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae (L1-2, L3-4, L2-4) of both groups were all improved with statistical significance (P less than 0.05) after the treatment. The above indexes of the treatment group were all significantly higher than those of the control group, with statistical significance (P less than 0.05). Compared with the same group before treatment (P less than 0.05), the osteocalcin (OC) levels of both groups were increased, and the Cross-linked N-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX-1) levels were decreased after the treatment. The OC level in the treatment group was higher when compared with the control group, while the CTX-1 level was lower compared to the control group (P less than 0.05). Moreover, no significant side-effects or adverse events were observed during the treatment and observation period. The Xianling Gubao Capsule possesses a therapeutic effect for BMD in osteoporosis patients, which can effectively increase their BMD, improve their bone metabolism, and control the loss of bone mass, therefore, can be used in clinical promotion and application.

ABSTRACT

It is unclear if the higher pregnancy rate in patients who experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) indicates that OHSS is favourable for embryo implantation, or if patients should be maintained in a hyperstimulation state in order to increase the success rate of embryo transplantation. We developed an animal model to determine the endometrial receptivity in rats with OHSS. Endometrial mRNA levels of ER, PR, HOXA10 and LIF were determined by semi-quantitative PCR and ER, PR, HOXA10, LIF and integrin α(v) ß(3) protein levels were determined by Western blotting. Development of pinopodes in the hyperstimulation group was slightly delayed, while in the regular stimulation group, development was significantly inhibited. mRNA transcription in the regular stimulation group was lower, while transcription in the hyperstimulation group was not different from controls. Protein expressions were lowest in the regular stimulation. We conclude that OHSS is associated with favourable endometrial receptivity, similar to that seen in a normal cycle, and receptivity that is increased relative to that seen with a routine stimulation protocol.

ABSTRACT

The regional acid deposition model system (RegADMS) was applied to simulate the air sulfur deposition onto different landuse types over China, in which the dry deposition velocities of SO2 and sulfate aerosol (SO4(2-) were estimated by use of a big leaf resistance analogy model and the wet scavenging coefficients were parameterized in terms of precipitation rate. Investigations show that the annual total sulfur deposition over mainland China is 7.24mt (1 mt = 10(6) ton) , in which dry deposition and wet deposition accounts for 56 and 44%, respectively. The sulfur deposition onto agriculture land, grass land, and forest land is 1.09, 3.6 and 1.41 mt, respectively, which sums 6.1 mt and accounts for 84% of the total sulfur deposition. The modeled sulfur deposition was in agreement with the measurement conducted at farmland in Yingtan, a typical read soil region in Jiangxi province of China, during the period of November 1998--October 1999. The total sulfur deposition at the Yingtan site is about 10.3 gm(-2) year(-1) of which 83% is dry deposition. The modeling sulfur deposition at the same site is 8.4 g m(-2) year(-1) Furthermore, the comparison between RegADMS and RAINS-ASIA on modeling regional sulfur deposition shows the consistence of the two models. The correlation coefficient between the simulated sulfur deposition at the medium-large cities reaches 0.72.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the structure of software system, the principles of overlay programming and the running mechanism of the programs for the Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography(SPECT) made by French SOPHA MEDICAL Corp. are analyzed in detail. On this basis, a method of extending functions of the system is introduced too. All the results of the extension in software functions for organ volume determination and of the measurements for living animals have proved the correctness and reliability of the method.
