ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous, early-onset neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent impairments in social interaction and communication. This study aims to delineate ASD subtypes based on individual gray matter brain networks and provide new insights from a graph theory perspective. In this study, we extracted and normalized single-subject gray matter networks and calculated each network's topological properties. The heterogeneity through discriminative analysis (HYDRA) method was utilized to subtype all patients based on network properties. Next, we explored the differences among ASD subtypes in terms of network properties and clinical measures. Our investigation identified three distinct ASD subtypes. In the case-control study, these subtypes exhibited significant differences, particularly in the precentral gyrus, lingual gyrus, and middle frontal gyrus. In the case analysis, significant differences in global and nodal properties were observed between any two subtypes. Clinically, subtype 1 showed lower VIQ and PIQ compared to subtype 3, but exhibited higher scores in ADOS-Communication and ADOS-Total compared to subtype 2. The results highlight the distinct brain network properties and behaviors among different subtypes of male patients with ASD, providing valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying ASD heterogeneity.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the meta-analysis was to evaluate and compare the photodynamic therapy's effectiveness in treating infected skin wounds. The results of this meta-analysis were analysed, and the odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using dichotomous or contentious random- or fixed-effect models. For the current meta-analysis, 6 examinations spanning from 2013 to 2021 were included, encompassing 154 patients with infected skin wounds were the used studies' starting point. Photodynamic therapy had a significantly lower wound ulcer size (MD, -4.42; 95% CI, -7.56--1.28, p = 0.006), better tissue repair (MD, -8.62; 95% CI, -16.76--0.48, p = 0.04) and lower microbial cell viability (OR, 0.13; 95% CI, 0.04-0.42, p < 0.001) compared with red light exposure in subjects with infected skin wounds. The examined data revealed that photodynamic therapy had a significantly lower wound ulcer size, better tissue repair and lower microbial cell viability compared with red light exposure in subjects with infected skin wounds. However, given that all examinations had a small sample size, consideration should be given to their values.

ABSTRACT

Ophioglossum vulgatum L. (O. vulgatum) is a species of fern used in traditional Chinese medicine, however, its application in cosmetics has not yet been studied. This study obtained O. vulgatum extract using 70% ethanol solution and evaporation. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) analysis identified many active components in O. vulgatum extract, such as polyols, amino acids, and flavonoids. A Pickering emulsion of O. vulgatum extract was also prepared, stabilized by a type of carbon dot based on l-arginine (CDs-Arg). The prepared Pickering emulsion was characterized by metallographic microscope and contact angle measurement. The results demonstrated that it was a pH-responsive O/W emulsion. Facial cleanser was then created using the prepared Pickering emulsion as the main component. When squeezed onto hands, the cleanser produced many delicate foams and caused no skin irritation. The prepared Pickering emulsion facilitated the use of O. vulgatum in facial cleanser.

ABSTRACT

Background: Evidence regarding the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and cognitive function was limited. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate whether BMI is independently related to cognitive function in Chinese patients with atrial fibrillation after adjusting for other covariates. Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional study. A total of 281 patients with atrial fibrillation who were hospitalized at the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical University in Shandong Province from January 2021 to November 2021 were included in the study. The target independent variable and the dependent variable were BMI and cognitive function in patients with atrial fibrillation, respectively. The patients' general information, BMI, past history, medication history, and other disease-related data were collected. The Montreal cognitive assessment scale (MoCA) was used to evaluate cognitive function. Results: A total of 244 patients with atrial fibrillation were collected in this study, with an average age of (67.28 ± 10.33) years, of whom 55.3% were male. The average BMI was (25.33 ± 4.27) kg/m2, and the average cognitive function score was (19.25 ± 6.88) points. The results of the smooth curve fitting and threshold effect tests showed that there was a curve correlation between BMI and cognitive function score, and its inflection point was 24.56 kg/m2. To the left of the inflection point, the relationship was significant; the effect size and the confidence interval were 0.43 and 0.01-0.85, respectively. To the right of the inflection point, there was no significant correlation between BMI and cognitive function (P=0.152). Conclusion: When BMI is lower than 24.56 kg/m2, the cognitive function score increases by 0.43 points for each unit increase in BMI in patients with atrial fibrillation. An increase in BMI at this time is a protective factor for cognitive function. Within the normal range of BMI, the higher the BMI in atrial fibrillation patients, the higher the cognitive function score. We encourage atrial fibrillation patients with normal BMI to maintain their current weight.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This network meta-analysis was aimed to enhance the corresponding evidence with respect to the efficacy and safety of biologic treatments. METHODS: PubMed and EMBASE database searches were conducted. Odds ratios were used to evaluate multi-aspect comparisons. SUCRA was used to analyze the ranking of treatments in each endpoint. Psoriasis Area and Severity Index 50%, 75%, 90%, 100%, PGA, dermatology quality of life index were considered as outcomes while adverse events and discontinuation were adopted to evaluate safety. RESULTS: For safety issues, briakinumab was associated with least headache and itolizumab had the lowest risk of infection. Ustekinumab performed best in discontinuation. SUCRA ranked briakinumab, brodalumab, Infliximab and ixekizumab as the favorable efficacy therapies, while briakinumab and brodalumab seemed to have mild side effects. No heterogeneity was observed between these comparisons. CONCLUSIONS: Briakinumab performed relatively stable under efficacy and safety outcome. Infliximab can be a good choice for its lower risk of infection. Brodalumab present very good potential in efficacy outcome like PASI and PGA. More clinical trials are required to supply more data about discontinuation of infliximab and infection of brodalumab and larger RCT for assessment of briakinumab.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This article describes a comprehensive protocol to protect the brachial plexus when performing pedicle subtraction osteotomy for ankylosing spondylitis patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis. DESIGN: A descriptive study was conducted. METHODS: Records of 101 cases from October 2013 to December 2016 were retrospectively audited. The protocol included five items: (1) preoperative assessment of motion range and nerve function of limbs and trunks; (2) preoperative positioning according to the assessment results; (3) intra-operative somatosensory evoked potential and blood pressure monitoring; (4) intra-operative repositioning according to the monitoring alarm signals; and (5) postoperative neurological function check. FINDINGS: Five patients showed impending brachial plexus injury indicators, including two who had a decrease in blood pressure and three who had a decrease in the amplitude of somatosensory evoked potential. After adjustment of position and soft pads, one patient had brachial plexus injury (0.99%) and the recovery time was 2 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: With this comprehensive strategy, the brachial plexus could be effectively protected during the surgery.
