ABSTRACT

Objective: Accumulating evidence shows that cognitive impairment (CI) in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients is related to brain network dysfunction. This study investigated brain network structure and rich-club organization in chronic heart failure patients with cognitive impairment based on graph analysis of diffusion tensor imaging data. Methods: The brain structure networks of 30 CHF patients without CI and 30 CHF patients with CI were constructed. Using graph theory analysis and rich-club analysis, changes in global and local characteristics of the subjects' brain network and rich-club organization were quantitatively calculated, and the correlation with cognitive function was analyzed. Results: Compared to the CHF patients in the group without CI group, the CHF patients in the group with CI group had lower global efficiency, local efficiency, clustering coefficient, the small-world attribute, and increased shortest path length. The CHF patients with CI group showed lower nodal degree centrality in the fusiform gyrus on the right (FFG.R) and nodal efficiency in the orbital superior frontal gyrus on the left (ORB sup. L), the orbital inferior frontal gyrus on the left (ORB inf. L), and the posterior cingulate gyrus on the right (PCG.R) compared with CHF patients without CI group. The CHF patients with CI group showed a smaller fiber number of edges in specific regions. In CHF patients with CI, global efficiency, local efficiency and the connected edge of the orbital superior frontal gyrus on the right (ORB sup. R) to the orbital middle frontal gyrus on the right (ORB mid. R) were positively correlated with Visuospatial/Executive function. The connected edge of the orbital superior frontal gyrus on the right to the orbital inferior frontal gyrus on the right (ORB inf. R) is positively correlated to attention/calculation. Compared with the CHF patients without CI group, the connection strength of feeder connection and local connection in CHF patients with CI group was significantly reduced, although the strength of rich-club connection in CHF patients complicated with CI group was decreased compared with the control, there was no statistical difference. In addition, the rich-club connection strength was related to the orientation (direction force) of the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scale, and the feeder and local connection strength was related to Visuospatial/Executive function of MoCA scale in the CHF patients with CI. Conclusion: Chronic heart failure patients with CI exhibited lower global and local brain network properties, reduced white matter fiber connectivity, as well as a decreased strength in local and feeder connections in key brain regions. The disrupted brain network characteristics and connectivity was associated with cognitive impairment in CHF patients. Our findings suggest that impaired brain network properties and decreased connectivity, a feature of progressive disruption of brain networks, predict the development of cognitive impairment in patients with chronic heart failure.

Introduction: Accumulating evidence shows that epilepsy is a disease caused by brain network dysfunction. This study explored changes in brain network structure in epilepsy patients based on graph analysis of diffusion tensor imaging data. Methods: The brain structure networks of 42 healthy control individuals and 26 epilepsy patients were constructed. Using graph theory analysis, global and local network topology parameters of the brain structure network were calculated, and changes in global and local characteristics of the brain network in epilepsy patients were quantitatively analyzed. Results: Compared with the healthy control group, the epilepsy patient group showed lower global efficiency, local efficiency, clustering coefficient, and a longer shortest path length. Both healthy control individuals and epilepsy patients showed small-world attributes, with no significant difference between groups. The epilepsy patient group showed lower nodal local efficiency and nodal clustering coefficient in the right olfactory cortex and right rectus and lower nodal degree centrality in the right olfactory cortex and the left paracentral lobular compared with the healthy control group. In addition, the epilepsy patient group showed a smaller fiber number of edges in specific regions of the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and default mode network, indicating reduced connection strength. Discussion: Epilepsy patients exhibited lower global and local brain network properties as well as reduced white matter fiber connectivity in key brain regions. These findings further support the idea that epilepsy is a brain network disorder.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on quality of life, anxiety, and depression in patients with epilepsy. METHODS: Each study subject was randomly assigned to a CBT (n=46) or control (n=49) group (1:1 ratio), and the first group underwent an 8-week CBT treatment. Anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QOLIE-31) were assessed at both baseline and endpoint using the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Hamilton Depression Scale (HDMA) and quality of life in Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) scales. The statistical analyses included between-and within-group comparisons of the effects of CBT on these measures and associations with demographic and clinical variables. RESULTS: No differences were found between variables at baseline (P>0.05). The repeated-measures analyses found that CBT group had greater improvement in depression score compared to the control group (P<0.05). The analysis of anxiety score showed that compared to the control group, CBT intervention had no statistical significance in the total anxiety population. However, the CBT intervention decreased anxiety in women and Combined-drug group (P<0.05). The CBT group had greater improvement in overall score, medication effect, and seizure worry score than the control group (P<0.05). Stratified analysis found total and medication effects score of CBT intervention group for the combined-drug group were higher than those of the single drug group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Increases in overall scores, seizure worry, cognitive functioning, and medication effect were better in the CBT group. CBT can improve anxiety, depression, and quality of life in patients with epilepsy. Women and combined-drug patients with epilepsy benefit most from CBT.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the changes of brain network in epilepsy patients without intracranial lesions under resting conditions. Methods: Twenty-six non-lesional epileptic patients and 42 normal controls were enrolled for BOLD-fMRI examination. The differences in brain network topological characteristics and functional network connectivity between the epilepsy group and the healthy controls were compared using graph theory analysis and independent component analysis. Results: The area under the curve for local efficiency was significantly lower in the epilepsy patients compared with healthy controls, while there were no differences in global indicators. Patients with epilepsy had higher functional connectivity in 4 connected components than healthy controls (orbital superior frontal gyrus and medial superior frontal gyrus, medial superior frontal gyrus and angular gyrus, superior parietal gyrus and paracentral lobule, lingual gyrus, and thalamus). In addition, functional connectivity was enhanced in the default mode network, frontoparietal network, dorsal attention network, sensorimotor network, and auditory network in the epilepsy group. Conclusion: The topological characteristics and functional connectivity of brain networks are changed in in non-lesional epilepsy patients. Abnormal functional connectivity may suggest reduced brain efficiency in epilepsy patients and also may be a compensatory response to brain function early at earlier stages of the disease.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the changes of cerebral white matter diffusion tensor in epilepsy. METHODS: This study was a retrospective study based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Twenty-six epileptic patients and 42 normal controls matched for sex, age and handedness were enrolled in our research. Based on the method of tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS), we analyzed the changes of each relevant parameter index of DTI in white matter of the brain in all subjects, including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD). RESULTS: In comparison with the control group, epileptic patients had decreased FA and elevated MD, AD, and RD in the anterior thalamic radiation, corticospinal tract, forceps major, forceps minor, cingulum, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, inferior longitudinal fasciculus, superior longitudinal fasciculus and uncinate fasciculus (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Widespread white matter integrity was observed in epileptic patients, which may be the structural basis for the development of affective disorders, impaired cognition, and motor abnormalities.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate Chinese nurses' views and experiences in relation to quality improvement implementation, as well as to determine the impact of contextual factors on nursing quality improvement initiatives. BACKGROUND: Nurses play a major role in carrying out quality improvement initiatives. Contextual factors influence the implementation and success of quality improvement initiatives. Studies that investigated the impact of contextual factors on Chinese nurses' practice in quality improvement remain limited. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used for this study. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was used to assess the context of quality improvement initiatives. Simple random sampling was used to recruit quality improvement teams. The sample included 356 nurses from tertiary teaching hospitals; 291 (81.7%) of them completed questionnaires. Nursing managers and nurses (n = 18) were purposively selected to participate in semi-structured interviews; their experiences and perceptions regarding the contextual factors of quality improvement initiatives were obtained. RESULTS: In the quantitative phase, the "microsystem" (mean=5.24) and "QI team" (mean = 4.97) contexts were reported as supportive contexts. The organizational context was weak, with a mean score of 3.92. In the qualitative phase, three themes related to the contextual challenges emerged: (1) nurses' attitudes and satisfaction, (2) team efficacy, and (3) organizational infrastructure and culture. CONCLUSIONS: Efforts to elevate organizational culture and reward systems are needed in Chinese hospitals. Further education aimed at increasing skills and knowledge should be provided, to ensure effective quality improvement implementation. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: During quality improvement initiatives, management tasks should focus on increasing nurses' satisfaction, solving skill and knowledge deficits, and clarifying nurses' roles in relation to quality improvement.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The neural bases of fatigue in Parkinson's disease (PD) remain uncertain. We aimed to assess the brain metabolic correlates of fatigue in patients with PD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven PD patients without clinically relevant depression (17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) score ≥ 14), apathy (Apathy Scale (AS) score ≥ 14) and excessive daytime somnolence (Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score ≥ 10) were evaluated with Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Each patient had an F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scan. Motor symptoms were measured with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor part. Levodopa equivalent daily dose for each patient was also calculated. The PET images were analyzed using statistical parametric mapping software. We introduced the age, educational level, HAMD scores, AS scores and ESS scores as covariates. RESULTS: High FSS scores were associated with brain hypermetabolism in areas including the right middle temporal gyrus (Brodmann area (BA) 37) and left middle occipital gyrus (BA 19). Increased FSS scores correlated with hypometabolism in regions such as the right precuneus (BA 23), left inferior frontal gyrus (BA 45) and left superior frontal gyrus (orbital part, BA 11). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that brain areas including frontal, temporal and parietal regions indicative of emotion, motivation and cognitive functions are involved in fatigue in PD patients.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to facilitate the clinical treatment and prognosis of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) by examining changes in T-lymphocyte subsets. Stroke patients admitted in Suzhou Hospital between 2014 and 2016 participated in the study. Patients were divided into a pneumonia group (50 patients) and a non-pneumonia group (254 patients) based on a diagnosis of pneumonia. Information regarding risk factors for ischemic stroke was collected from all patients using a questionnaire. Compared with non-SAP patients, SAP patients were older, dysphagic, smokers, had higher NIH stroke scale (NIHSS) scores and neutrophil: lymphocyte ratio, had higher leukocyte, neutrophil, and CD8 levels, had lower CD3, CD4, and lymphocyte levels, and had a lower CD4:CD8 ratio. Patients with a higher NIHSS score had higher CD8 levels, lower CD3 and CD4 levels, and a lower CD4:CD8 ratio. No significant differences in T-lymphocyte subsets were found between the left and right cerebral hemispheres. After adjusting for other variables, smoking, dysphagia, NIHSS score, and CD4:CD8 ratio were positively associated with SAP. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for dysphagia, NIHSS score, CD4:CD8 ratio, CD4:CD8 ratio + NIHSS score, and Dysphagia+ CD4:CD8 ratio + NIHSS score were 0.583 (95% CI: 0.490-0.675), 0.791 (95% CI: 0.724-0.859), 0.676 (95% CI: 0.593-0.759), 0.846 (95% CI: 0.790-0.902), and 0.867 (95% CI: 0.815-0.918), respectively. A few T-lymphocyte subsets may increase susceptibility to pneumonia after acute ischemic stroke. Thus, the detection of T-lymphocyte subsets may predict the risk of SAP in such patients.

ABSTRACT

We examined whether the association between total homocysteine (tHCY) and risk of ischemic stroke (IS) varies depending on renal function to gain insight into why tHCY-lowering vitamins do not reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease in clinical trials. We analyzed data from 542 IS patients with large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) or small artery occlusion (SAO) after stratification by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) to evaluate renal function. We found that tHCY level was positively associated with the occurrence of IS in both LAA (OR: 1.159, 95% CI: 1.074-1.252, P<0.001) and SAO (OR: 1.143, 95% CI: 1.064-1.228, P<0.001) patients and in LAA (OR: 1.135, 95% CI: 1.047-1.230, P=0.002) and SAO (OR: 1.159, 95% CI: 1.060-1.268, P=0.001) subgroups with normal renal function but not in LAA or SAO subgroups with renal insufficiency. eGFR level was positively associated with IS in LAA (OR: 1.022, 95% CI: 1.010-1.034, P<0.001) and SAO (OR: 1.024, 1.012-1.037, P<0.001) subgroups with normal renal function but was negatively associated with IS in LAA (OR: 0.875, 95% CI: 0.829-0.925, P<0.001) and SAO (OR: 0.890, 95% CI: 0.850-0.932, P<0.001) subgroups with renal insufficiency. Folic acid level was negatively associated with IS in LAA (OR: 0.734, 95% CI: 0.606-0.889, P=0.002) and SAO (OR: 0.861, 95% CI: 0.767-0.967, P=0.012) subgroups with renal insufficiency. Therefore, renal function as evaluated by eGFR exerts a significant influence on the association between tHCY and risk of IS.

AIMS: The aim of this study is to further uncover the neural basis of postural instability gait disorder (PIGD) subtype of Parkinson's disease. METHODS: With F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET (FDG-PET), brain glucose metabolism of patients with PIGD (n = 15) was compared with healthy controls (n = 17) and tremor-dominant (TD) patients (n = 15), and the correlation between metabolism and PIGD symptoms was also assessed. Within PIGD symptom-correlated hypometabolic areas, the relationship of functional connectivity (FC) with motor and cognitive symptoms was examined by using functional MRI. RESULTS: Compared with controls, patients with PIGD displayed a distributed pattern of brain hypometabolism including striatal, frontal, and parietal areas. Relative to the pattern of TD patients, the pattern of patients with PIGD had additional metabolic decreases in caudate and inferior parietal lobule (IPL, Brodmann area [BA] 40). In PIGD group, the metabolic reductions in IPL (BA 40), middle frontal gyrus (MFG, BA 9) and fusiform gyrus (FG, BA 20) were associated with severe PIGD symptoms. Regions showing such correlation were chosen for further seed-based FC analysis. Decreased FC within the prefrontal-parietal network (between the MFG and IPL) was associated with severe PIGD symptoms. CONCLUSION: The involvement of the caudate, FG, and prefrontal-parietal network may be associated with the prominent gait impairments of PIGD subtype. Our findings expand the pathophysiological knowledge of PIGD subtype and provide valuable information for potential neuromodulation therapies alleviating gait disorders.

GOAL: To investigate the characteristics of high-resolution anorectal manometry (HR-ARM) in Parkinson disease (PD) patients with defecation disorder (DD) compared with patients with functional defecation disorder (FDD). BACKGROUND: DD is a common gastrointestinal symptom in PD. HR-ARM is a relatively new and reliable method for detecting DD. STUDY: A cohort of PD patients with DD was matched with FDD patients. Defecatory symptoms were investigated by questionnaire. Anorectal motility and sensation were evaluated by HR-ARM. Differences in defecatory symptoms, sensorimotor parameters, and DD type were analyzed. Defecatory symptoms and manometric variables obtained in early-stage PD were compared with advanced stage, and relationships between manometric parameters and evacuatory symptoms explored. RESULTS: Straining and sensation of blockage was experienced significantly more in PD than FDD, and stool consistency more severely affected. Maximum squeeze and intrarectal pressure during defecation in PD was lower than in FDD. Anal resting and residual pressures, duration of sustained squeeze, threshold volumes for first sensation, urgency, and maximum discomfort were similar between groups. PD patients presented predominantly with inadequate propulsive forces, whereas FDD patients showed dyssynergic defecation. Defecatory symptoms and manometric parameters did not differ between stages of PD. CONCLUSIONS: PD patients with DD experienced more straining and sensation of blockage than FDD patients, possibly related to inadequate anorectal motility and paradoxical anal contraction of pelvic floor. Impaired squeeze response and inadequate propulsive forces are specific to anorectal function of PD patients with DD, compared with FDD, with abnormalities unchanged between early and advanced PD.

ABSTRACT

Parkinson's disease (PD) can be classified into the tremor dominant (TD) subtype and the postural instability gait difficulty (PIGD) subtype, which present with different clinical courses and prognoses. However, the symptom-specific intrinsic neural mechanisms underlying the subtypes of PD still remain elusive. In the current study, we utilized resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) combined with the regional homogeneity (ReHo) method to investigate the modulations of neural activity in 13 patients with predominantly PIGD (p-PIGD) and 15 patients with predominantly TD (p-TD) in the resting state. Compared with healthy controls, the p-PIGD and the p-TD groups both displayed ReHo changes in the default mode network (DMN). By contrast, the p-TD group exhibited more ReHo alterations in the cerebellum involved in the cerebello-thalamo-cortical (CTC) loops, whilst the p-PIGD group in extensive cortical and sub-cortical areas, including the frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, limbic lobes, basal ganglia and thalamus, which are involved in the striatal-thalamo-cortical (STC) loops. Direct comparison between the two groups showed significant ReHo alterations in the primary visual cortex. Our findings underscore the differential involvement of the STC and CTC circuits underlying the two subtypes of PD. Moreover, relatively widespread neural activity abnormality, especially in the motor-related regions as well as the visual network, is apparently a characteristic feature of PIGD symptoms. This study could shed light on the underlying pathophysiology and clinical heterogeneity of PD presentation.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the level of taurine in plasma, and its association with the severity of motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS) and chronic levodopa treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Plasma taurine level was measured in treated PD (tPD), untreated PD (ntPD) and control groups. Motor symptoms and NMS were assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, the short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, the Hamilton Depression Scale, the Scale for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease for Autonomic Symptoms and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Longtime exposure to levodopa was indicated by its approximate cumulative dosage. RESULTS: The plasma taurine levels of PD patients were decreased when compared with controls and negatively associated with motor severity but not NMS. Moreover, tPD patients exhibited lower levels of plasma taurine than ntPD patients. Interestingly, plasma taurine levels negatively correlated with cumulative levodopa dosage in tPD. After controlling for potential confounders, the association between taurine and levodopa remained significant. CONCLUSION: Our study supports that taurine may play important roles in the pathophysiology of PD and the disturbances caused by chronic levodopa administration.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore plasma antioxidant status in de novo Chinese Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and investigate its relationship with specific motor features of PD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-four de novo Chinese PD patients and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Each motor feature of PD patients was assessed by unified Parkinson's disease rating scale. Plasma antioxidant status, including plasma level of glutathione (GSH) and plasma activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), was detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between the plasma antioxidant status and motor features of PD was evaluated by Spearman's coefficient. RESULTS: Plasma GSH level and plasma activities of GSH-Px, CAT and SOD of PD patients were lower than those of healthy controls. Moreover, the declining activity of plasma CAT was related with the increasing mean postural instability and gait disorder (PIGD) score and growing age. In contrast, the severity of tremor was positively correlated with plasma SOD activity. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that the plasma antioxidant status is impaired in de novo Chinese PD patients. The complex relationship between the plasma antioxidant status and different motor features indicates that the antioxidant mechanisms underlying tremor and PIGD of PD may be different.

ABSTRACT

Anxiety disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are often missed due to an overlap with other non-motor symptoms. The relationships between anxiety and other non-motor symptoms in PD still remain unclear. We used the Hamilton anxiety rating scale and the Non-motor Symptoms Questionnaire to measure anxiety and the complex range of non-motor symptoms in 99 PD patients. The relationships between anxiety and other PD-related non-motor symptoms were examined through regression analyses. 25 % of PD patients were diagnosed with clinically relevant anxiety. Non-motor symptoms were more prominent in patients with anxiety. Depression, urinary disorders, and sleep disruption were the factors most likely to influence anxiety in PD. Our findings have revealed a strong interplay between anxiety and other non-motor symptoms of PD and have highlighted the need for a holistic approach towards the clinical treatment of this disabling condition.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that serotonergic system may be implicated in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), and particularly in nonmotor symptoms such as depression, fatigue, sleep disorders, sensory and autonomic dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate plasma levels of serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in PD patients, and investigate their associations with nonmotor symptoms. METHODS: Eighty-two PD patients and sixty-four controls underwent a series of clinical assessments, including Hamilton Depression Scale, Fatigue Severity Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Visual Analog Scale for Pain, and Scale for Outcomes in PD for Autonomic Symptoms. Plasma 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels were measured by HPLC-ECD. RESULTS: PD patients exhibited worse performance on nonmotor symptom scales (all P-values <0.001) and presented lower plasma levels of 5-HT (P < 0.001) and 5-HIAA (P < 0.001) than control individuals. Within the PD group, decreased concentrations of plasma 5-HT and 5-HIAA were correlated with more severe depression (r = -0.447, P < 0.001; r = -0.407, P < 0.001, respectively) and pain (r = -0.485, P < 0.001; r = -0.416, P < 0.001, respectively). After performing multiple linear regression, plasma 5-HT (P = 0.01) and 5-HIAA (P = 0.006) remained significantly associated with depression. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that serotonergic dysfunction might exist in PD, and specifically correlated with depression and pain in PD. Plasma levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA may be considered as peripheral markers for depression in PD.

Converging evidence suggests that changes in plasma levels of amino acids are involved in Parkinson's disease (PD), but their roles in nonmotor symptoms (NMS) of PD remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between plasma amino acids and NMS of PD. Plasma levels of aspartate (Asp), glutamate (Glu), glycine (Gly) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were measured in 92 PD patients and 60 healthy controls. Four NMS, including depression, pain, sleep disturbances and autonomic dysfunction were assessed in enrolled subjects using the Hamilton Depression Scale, the short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Scale for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease for Autonomic Symptoms, respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the correlations between plasma levels of amino acids and NMS. PD patients exhibited significantly higher scores of NMS scales and lower plasma levels of amino acids compared to healthy controls. Within the PD group, plasma levels of Asp and Glu were negatively associated with the severity of depression and sleep disturbances. Moreover, decreased plasma level of GABA was correlated with more severe symptoms of sleep disturbances. After controlling for gender, disease duration, severity of motor symptoms and anti-parkinsonian medications, Glu but not Asp remained significantly associated with depression, along with Asp, GABA but not Glu remained negatively associated with sleep disturbances. The altered plasma levels of amino acids may be implicated in the pathogenesis of NMS of PD.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential risk factors of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) in China. METHOD: A case-control study including 317 patients with pathologically confirmed ICC and 634 healthy individuals was conducted. The cases and controls were matched in age, sex and inhabitancy. Data were statistically analyzed by Chi-square test and conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed significant difference in HBsAg seropositivity, liver cirrhosis, hepatolithiasis, choledocholithiasis and schistosomiasis between ICC patients and healthy controls (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis confirmed that HBsAg seropositivity, liver cirrhosis, hepatolithiasis and hepatic schistosomiasis were associated with ICC, and their adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) were 10.265 (6.676-15.783), 13.101 (5.265-32.604), 18.242 (3.580-92.958), 18.435 (1.930-176.082), 15.102 (4.607-49.499) and 11.820 (3.522-39.668), respectively. The incidence of hepatic cyst, cholecystolithiasis, hepatic hemangioma, fatty liver, diabetes mellitus, smoking and drinking were not significantly different between ICC patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS: The HBV infection, liver cirrhosis, hepatolithiasis and hepatic schistosomiasis may be the risk factors for ICC in China.
