ABSTRACT

The cathodic product Li2CO3, due to its high decomposition potential, has hindered the practical application of rechargeable Li-CO2/O2 batteries. To overcome this bottleneck, a Pt/FeNC cathodic catalyst is fabricated by dispersing Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with a uniform size of 2.4 nm and 8.3 wt % loading amount into a porous microcube FeNC support for high-performance rechargeable Li-CO2/O2 batteries. The FeNC matrix is composed of numerous two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanosheets, which is derived from an Fe-doping zinc metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF). Importantly, using Pt/FeNC as the cathodic catalyst, the Li-CO2/O2 (VCO2/VO2 = 4:1) battery displays the lowest overpotential of 0.54 V and a long-term stability of 142 cycles, which is superior to batteries with FeNC (1.67 V, 47 cycles) and NC (1.87 V, 23 cycles) catalysts. The FeNC matrix and Pt NPs can exert a synergetic effect to decrease the decomposition potential of Li2CO3 and thus enhance the battery performance. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy further confirms that Li2CO3 can be completely decomposed under a low potential of 3.3 V using the Pt/FeNC catalyst. Impressively, Li2CO3 exhibits a film structure on the surface of the Pt/FeNC catalysts by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and its size can be limited by the confined space between the carbon sheets in Pt/FeNC, which enlarges the better contacting interface. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Pt and FeNC catalysts show a higher adsorption energy for Li2CO3 and Li2CO4 intermediates compared to the NC catalyst, and the possible discharge pathways are deeply investigated. The synergetic effect between the FeNC support and Pt active sites makes the Li-CO2/O2 battery achieve optimal performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Previous studies usually examine the associations between psychological distresses and quality of life (QOL) with a variable-centred approach, while little is known about the effect of the individual variance in time-varying changes of psychological distresses on QOL. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether individual variance in psychological distresses during the early phases post-earthquake would develop different QOL's levels among adolescent survivors 10-year after the Wenchuan earthquake. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Wenchuan Earthquake Adolescent Health Cohort Study. The current study included 744 adolescent survivors who effectively completed surveys at 6 months, 24 months, and 10 years after the earthquake. Self-report questionnaires were administered to collect information on socio-demographic characteristics, earthquake exposure, life events, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and QOL. Data were analysed using hierarchical multiple regression. RESULTS: Trajectories of psychological distresses were classified as follow: resistance (anxiety 40.73%; depression 54.70%; PTSS 74.46%), recovery (anxiety 17.20%; depression 9.27%; PTSS 10.35%), delayed dysfunction (anxiety 10.35%; depression 18.15%; PTSS 6.18%), and chronicity (anxiety 31.72%; depression 17.88%; PTSS 9.01%). After controlling covariates, hierarchical multiple regression only revealed that the anxiety trajectory with delayed dysfunction remained significantly predictive for four domains of QOL (physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environment). CONCLUSION: The current study highlights the importance of focusing on the variations in trajectories of anxiety symptoms among disaster survivors and providing individualized mental health services to improve survivors' QOL.

ABSTRACT

Macadamia nuts have high nutritional value and positive health attributes. Changes to the composition and availability of these compounds during roasting contribute to product quality. In this study, changes to the chemical composition of lipids (fatty acids, triglycerides, and free fatty acids) and other phytochemicals were analyzed, and a sensory evaluation was carried out of two major varieties of macadamia nuts planted in China, after roasting. Only small changes in fatty acid (FA) content and a slight decrease in total triglycerides (TAGs) were observed after roasting. The free fatty acid (FFA) content and the peroxide value were increased by roasting. The total available polyphenol content increased by 25.6% and the oxidative stability index of kernels increased by 21.6%. The sensory scores for taste and aroma were doubled by roasting. Overall, the sensory, nutritional quality, and oxidative stability of roasted macadamia nuts were greatly improved, compared with raw nuts.

ABSTRACT

Free fatty acids (FFAs) are key intermediates of lipid metabolism that have a crucial role in many critical biological processes. The specific locations of carbon-carbon double bonds (C═C) in FFAs are often associated with distinct biological functions. Despite the rapid development of analytical techniques, identification of C═C locations in FFAs with more than three C═C bonds in complex biological matrices remains a challenge. Herein, we describe a double derivatization strategy, coupled with shotgun-mass spectrometry (MS), for unambiguous and sensitive determination of a high-coverage C═C bond (from 1 to 6) locations of FFAs. Our approach is based on combination of acetone labeling of C═C bonds and N,N-diethyl-1,2-ethanediamine (DEEA) labeling of carboxyl groups within FFAs. Acetone labeling of C═C bonds via photochemical reaction provides diagnostic ions, specific to C═C locations, and DEEA labeling of carboxyl groups significantly enhances MS response of diagnostic ions, by invoking a readily protonated tertiary amine group on FFA analytes. By exploiting this double derivatization strategy, the assignment of C═C locations of FFAs with more than three C═C bonds was achieved with high sensitivity (limit of quantitation (LOQ) 0.1-1.5 nmol/L). In contrast, such assignments were not possible by acetone labeling alone, because of the low sensitivity of diagnostic ions in negative ionization mode of MS. The applicability of our method was demonstrated by profiling of FFAs, including unsaturated FFA C═C positional isomers, in liver samples from mice with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and their lean controls. The study showed that the high-specificity and high-sensitivity method developed here is promising for accurate identification and quantitation of a wide array of FFAs in biological samples.

ABSTRACT

Vegetable oils and animal fats are dietary source of lipids that play critical and multiple roles in biological function. Triacylglycerols (TAGs) are the principal component of oils and fats with significant difference in profile among different oils and fats. TAG profiling is essential for nutritional evaluation, quality control and assurance of safety in oils and fats. However, analysis of TAGs is a challenging task because of the complicated composition of TAGs and their similar physicochemical properties in oils and fats. The rapid development of mass spectrometry (MS) technology in recent years makes it possible to analyze the composition, content and structure of TAGs in the study of the physical, chemical and nutritional properties of oils, fats and related products. This review described the research advancement based on MS for profiling of TAGs in oil, fat and their applications in food. The application of MS, including direct infusion strategies, and its combination with chromatography, gas chromatography-MS (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-MS (LC-MS), in the analysis of TAGs were reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of these analytical methods with relevant applications for TAGs analysis in food were also described.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of pyelic separation with gestational age, body weight and sex in early newborns. METHODS: A total of 320 neonates were examined by renal ultrasound 2-7 days after birth. The neonates included 180 boys and 140 girls, with a mean gestational age of 36±3 weeks (28-42 weeks) and a mean birth weight of 2430±1000 g (900-4870 g). Correlation analysis was performed between renal pelvis anteroposterior diameter (APD) and gestational age/body weight. The newborns were grouped based on gestational age, body weight and sex and the incidence of pyelic separation was compared among the groups. RESULTS: Pyelic separation was found in 100 of the 320 newborns. The incidence of pyelic separation in boys (37.8%, 70 cases) was significantly higher than in girls (22.2%, 30 cases) (P<0.05). The incidence rates of pyelic separation on the left side, right side and both sides were 59%, 13% and 29% respectively in boys, and 53%, 7% and 40% respectively in girls. There was no significant difference in the location of renal pelvis separation between boys and girls (P>0.05). There significant difference in the incidence of pyelic separation between different gestational age groups (P>0.05). APD was positively correlated with gestational age and birth weight (P<0.05). The incidence of pyelic separation was negatively correlated with birth weight in all newborns except those who were macrosomic (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of pyelic separation in early newborns is closely associated with birth weight and sex. APD is positively correlated to gestational age and birth weight. Pyelic separation often occurs more frequently on the left side or both sides than on the right side.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether Val279Phe single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 9th exon of platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) are associated with intracranial hemorrhage in preterm infants. METHODS: A case-control study was performed. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to test genotype and allele frequencies of the 9th exon Val279Phe SNPs of PAF-AH in 58 preterm infants with intracranial hemorrhage (hemorrhage group) and 65 preterm infants without intracranial hemorrhage (control group). RESULTS: There were significant differences in genotype frequency of Val279Phe SNPs in the 9th exon of PAF-AH between the hemorrhage and control groups (P<0.05). Frequency of normal genotype in the hemorrhage group (63.8%) was significantly lower than in the control group (81.5%). In contrast, frequency of heterozygous genotype (34.5%) in the hemorrhage group was significantly higher than in control group (16.9%). There were also significant differences in allele frequency of Val279Phe SNPs in the 9th exon of PAF-AH between the two groups (P<0.05). T allele frequency in the hemorrhage group (19.0%) was significantly higher than in the control group (10.0%). CONCLUSIONS: Val279Phe SNPs in the 9th exon of PAF-AH may be associated with intracranial hemorrhage in preterm infants.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of Zhongyan-4 (ZY-4, a Chinese herbal preparation worked out according to the therapeutic principle of supplementing qi, nourishing Yin, clearing heat and detoxication) in treating HIV/AIDS patients in the early or middle stage. METHODS: Adopted was randomized double-blinded and placebo-parallel-controlled method, with 72 HIV/AIDS patients randomly divided into the ZY-4 group (36 patients) treated with ZY-4 and the control group (36 patients) treated with placebo. The treatment course was six months. The index of CD(4)(+), CD(8)(+) counts, body weight, clinical symptom scoring were estimated at 4 time points (0, 1, 3 and 6 month in the course), and also the viral load before and after treatment. The whole course of observation was completed in 63 patients, 30 in the ZY-4 group and 33 in the control group. RESULTS: CD(4)(+) count in the ZY-4 group got elevated by 7.70 +/- 150.96/mm(3) on average, while that in the control group lowered by 27.33 +/- 85.28/mm(3). Fifteen out of the 30 patients in the ZY-4 group had their CD(4)(+) count increased, which was evidently much higher than that in the control group (8/33, P < 0.05), suggesting that the efficacy of ZY-4 is superior to that of placebo in elevating CD(4)(+) count. Moreover, ZY-4 showed actions in elevating CD(45)RA(+) and CD(8)(+) count, reducing HIV virus load, improving clinical symptom/sign and increasing body weight of patients. No obvious adverse reaction was found in the clinical trial. CONCLUSION: ZY-4 has an immunity-protective and/or rebuilding function in HIV/AIDS patients in the early and middle stage, and also shows effects in lowering viral load, increasing body weight and improving symptoms and signs to a certain degree.
