ABSTRACT

Topography is an important factor affecting soil erosion and is measured as a combination of the slope length and slope steepness (LS-factor) in erosion models, like the Chinese Soil Loss Equation. However, global high-resolution LS-factor datasets have rarely been published. Challenges arise when attempting to extract the LS-factor on a global scale. Furthermore, existing LS-factor estimation methods necessitate projecting data from a spherical trapezoidal grid to a planar rectangle, resulting in grid size errors and high time complexity. Here, we present a global 1-arcsec resolution LS-factor dataset (DS-LS-GS1) with an improved method for estimating the LS-factor without projection conversion (LS-WPC), and we integrate it into a software tool (LS-TOOL). Validation of the Himmelblau-Orlandini mathematical surface shows that errors are less than 1%. We assess the LS-WPC method on 20 regions encompassing 5 landform types, and R2 of LS-factor are 0.82, 0.82, 0.83, 0.83, and 0.84. Moreover, the computational efficiency can be enhanced by up to 25.52%. DS-LS-GS1 can be used as high-quality input data for global soil erosion assessment.

ABSTRACT

The organic dye malachite green (MG) poses a potential risk of cancer and fertility loss in humans and aquatic organisms. This study focused on a modified pyrolytic char (PC) derived from waste tires to efficiently remove MG from wastewater. Modified PC has rich -OH functional groups, higher BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surfaces of 74.4, 64.95, and 67.31 m2/g, and larger pore volumes of 0.52, 0.47, and 0.62 cm3/g for NaOH, Na2CO3, and CaO modification, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model fit the adsorption well, and the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity was 937.8 mg/g for PC after CaO activation (CaO-PC). NaOH-modified PC (NaOH-PC) showed the best fit with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.918). It is suggested that alkali-modified waste tire pyrolytic char could be a potential adsorbent for removing MG from dye-containing wastewater.

ABSTRACT

With the increasing demand for legged robots, the importance of the joint drive is increasing. The dynamic performance of the inner-most torque/current control loop conditions the capabilities of the whole joint system. In this paper, a direct torque control based on a prediction model is proposed. The motor torque is estimated by considering calculation and measurement delay; error estimation and torque tracking error are observed and compensated. The control algorithm was implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board to apply the capabilities of concurrency calculation of the FPGA. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was experimentally verified. Compared with the commonly used Field Oriented Control (FOC) current controller, the presented controller can not only improve the dynamic performance of the motor but also reduce the average switching times of the inverter.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer is acknowledged as a common cancer with high morbidity and mortality. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), kind of non-coding single-stranded RNA molecules, can be used in cancer clinical treatments. In this research, miR-199a-5p was seen lowly expressed in NSCLC sera samples. miR-199a-5p suppressed the cell proliferation, migration and arrested cell cycle in NSCLC cell lines. The results showed that SLC2A1 (glucose transporter 1, GLUT1) was a direct target of miR-199a-5p. Downregulation of SLC2A1 could not only inhibit cell proliferation, migration and cell cycle, but also promote cell apoptosis. The data suggests that miR-199a-5p can inhibit glucose metabolism in NSCLC by targeting SLC2A1.This study proves that miR-199a-5p / SLC2A1 can play an essential role in the development of NSCLC by targeting SLC2A1. It puts forward a new approach for clinical treatments of NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are potentially important biomaterials because of their chemical, physical, and biological properties. Our research indicates that CNTs exhibit high compatibility with bone tissue. The guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique is commonly applied to reconstruct alveolar bone and treat peri-implant bone defects. In GBR, bone defects are covered with a barrier membrane to prevent the entry of nonosteogenic cells such as epithelial cells and fibroblasts. The barrier membrane also maintains a space for new bone formation. However, the mechanical and biological properties of materials previously used in clinical practice sometimes delayed bone regeneration. In this study, we developed a CNT-based membrane for GBR exhibiting high strength to provide a space for bone formation and provide cellular shielding to induce osteogenesis. The CNT membrane was made via the dispersion of single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) in hyaluronic acid solution followed by filtration. The CNT membrane assumed a nanostructure surface due to the bundled SWCNTs and exhibited high strength and hydrophilicity after oxidation. In addition, the membrane promoted the proliferation of osteoblasts but not nonosteogenic cells. CNT membranes were used to cover experimental bone defects made in rat calvaria. At 8 weeks after surgery, more extensive bone formation was observed in membrane-covered defects compared with bone defects not covered with membrane. Almost no diffusion of CNTs was observed around the membrane. These results indicate that the CNT membrane has adequate strength, stability, and surface characteristics for osteoblasts, and its shielding properties promote bone formation. Demonstration of the safety and osteogenic potential of the CNT membranes through further animal studies should facilitate their clinical application in GBR.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer is one of the most malignant tumors that can form in the human. MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) play significant role in tumor progression. Human lung cancer tissues and cell lines were used to determine miR-150-5p respectively, and Liver Kinase B1 (LKB1) expression using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The data analysis website Kaplan-Meier Plotter (database obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas) was used to perform a survival analysis with LKB1 levels. Using the appropriate assays, the function of miR-150-5p was also detected in cellular proliferation, migration and cell apoptosis as well as cell cycle. Results revealed that miR-150-5p was upregulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissue and cell lines. In NSCLC, miR-150-5p promoted cellular proliferation and migration, but decreased cellular apoptosis. Conversely, miR-150-5p inhibition suppressed cellular growth. These results further revealed a network of cellular signaling for miR-150-5p to target LKB1. Ectopic expression of LKB1 can mitigate the tumor-promoting function of miR-150-5p. Collectively, these results indicated that miR-150-5p may promote lung cancer by inhibiting the suppressor gene LKB1 in NSCLC.
