ABSTRACT

The side reactions and dendrite growth at the interface of Zn anodes greatly limit their practical applications in Zn metal batteries. Herein, we propose a hybrid molecular sieve-based interfacial layer (denoted as Z7M3) with a hierarchical porous structure for Zn metal anodes, which contains 70 vol % microporous ZSM-5 molecular sieves and 30 vol % mesoporous MCM-41 molecular sieves. Through comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that the mesopores (∼2.5 nm) of MCM-41 can limit the disordered diffusion of free water molecules and increase the wettability of the interfacial layer toward aqueous electrolytes. In addition, the micropores (∼0.56 nm) of ZSM-5 can optimize the Zn2+ solvation structures by reducing the bonded water molecules, which simultaneously decrease the constraint force of solvated water molecules to Zn2+ ions, thus promoting the penetrability and diffusion kinetics of Zn2+ ions in Z7M3. The synergetic effects from the hybrid molecular sieves maintain a constant Zn2+ concentration on the surface of the Zn electrode during Zn deposition, contributing to dendrite-free Zn anodes. Consequently, Z7M3-coated Zn electrodes achieved excellent cycling stability in both half and full cells.

ABSTRACT

Oral microorganisms are closely related to oral health, the occurrence of some oral diseases is associated with changes in the oral microbiota, and many studies have demonstrated that traditional smoking can affect the oral microbial community. However, due to the short time since the emergence of e-cigarettes, fewer studies are comparing oral microorganisms for users of e-cigarettes versus cigarettes. We collected saliva from 40 non-smokers (NS), 46 traditional cigarette smokers (TS), and 27 e-cigarette consumers (EC), aged between 18 and 35 years. We performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing on the saliva samples collected to study the effects of e-cigarettes versus traditional cigarettes on the oral microbiome. The results showed that compared with the NS group, the alpha diversity of oral flora in saliva was altered in the TS group, with no significant change in the e-cigarette group. Compared with the NS and EC groups, the relative abundance of Actinomyces and Prevotella was increased in the TS group. However, compared with the NS and TS groups, the relative abundance of Veillonella was increased, and the relative abundance of Porphyromonas and Peptostreptococcus was decreased in the EC group. These results showed that both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes could alter the structure and composition of oral microbiota. The use of traditional cigarettes promotes the growth of some anaerobic bacteria, which may contribute to dental decay and bad breath over time. E-cigarettes have a different effect on the structure and composition of the oral microbial community compared to conventional cigarettes. In order to better understand the effects of e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes on users' mouths, future studies will investigate the relationship between diseases such as dental caries and periodontitis and changes in oral microbial species levels.

ABSTRACT

Currently, the nanofluidic synapse can only perform basic neuromorphic pulse patterns. One immediate problem that needs to be addressed to further its capability of brain-like computing is the realization of a nanofluidic spiking device. Here, we report the use of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate membrane to achieve bionic ionic current-induced spiking. In addition to the simulation of various electrical pulse patterns, our synapse could produce transmembrane ionic current-induced spiking, which is highly analogous to biological action potentials with similar phases and excitability. Moreover, the spiking properties could be modulated by ions and neurochemicals. We expect that this work could contribute to biomimetic spiking computing in solution.

BACKGROUND: Pig organ xenotransplantation is a potential solution for the severe organ shortage in clinic, while immunogenic genes need to be eliminated to improve the immune compatibility between humans and pigs. Current knockout strategies are mainly aimed at the genes causing hyperacute immune rejection (HAR) that occurs in the first few hours while adaptive immune reactions orchestrated by CD4 T cell thereafter also cause graft failure, in which process the MHC II molecule plays critical roles. METHODS: Thus, we generate a 4-gene (GGTA1, CMAH, ß4GalNT2, and CIITA) knockout pig by CRISPR/Cas9 and somatic cell nuclear transfer to compromise HAR and CD4 T cell reactions simultaneously. RESULTS: We successfully obtained 4KO piglets with deficiency in all alleles of genes, and at cellular and tissue levels. Additionally, the safety of our animals after gene editing was verified by using whole-genome sequencing and karyotyping. Piglets have survived for more than one year in the barrier, and also survived for more than 3 months in the conventional environment, suggesting that the piglets without MHC II can be raised in the barrier and then gradually mated in the conventional environment. CONCLUSIONS: 4KO piglets have lower immunogenicity, are safe in genomic level, and are easier to breed than the model with both MHC I and II deletion.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies on heavy metal exposure and liver injury are predominantly cross-sectional, lacking longitudinal data and exploration of potential mechanisms. METHOD: We conducted a repeated-measures study in Northeast China from 2016 to 2019, involving 322 participants. Linear mixed models (LMM) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were employed to explore the associations between individual and mixed blood metal concentrations [chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), vanadium (V), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb)] and liver function biomarkers [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), total protein (TP)]. Mediation and enrichment analyses were used to determine whether the inflammatory response is a critical pathway for heavy metal-induced liver damage. RESULT: We obtained a total of 958 observations. The results from LMM and BKMR indicated significant associations between individual and mixed heavy metals and liver function biomarkers. Longitudinal analysis revealed associations between Cd and the annual increase rate of ALT (ß = 2.61; 95% CI: 0.97, 4.26), the annual decrease rate of ALB (ß = -0.21; 95% CI: -0.39, -0.03), Mn and the annual increase rate of GLB (ß = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.72), and V and the annual decrease rate of ALB/GLB (ß = -1.15; 95% CI: -2.00, -0.31). Mediation analysis showed that high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) mediated the associations between Cd and AST, TP, with mediation effects of 27.7% and 13.4%, respectively. Additionally, results from Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses supported the role of inflammatory response pathways. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that heavy metal exposure leads to liver damage, with the inflammatory response potentially serving as a crucial pathway in this process. This study offers a novel perspective on understanding heavy metal-induced liver injury and provides insights for preventive measures against the health damage caused by heavy metals.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated a correlation between the ratio of alanine aminotransferase to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (ALT/HDL-C) in the serum and the risk of diabetes. However, no existing study has investigated the association between insulin resistance (IR) and ALT/HDL-C. Therefore, this study aims to explore the association between ALT/HDL-C and IR in American adults. Methods: A total of 7,599 adults selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2013 to 2020 were studied. IR was assessed based on the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). And the association between IR and ALT/HDL-C was assessed through multiple logistic regression, generalized smooth curve fitting and subgroup analyses. Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated a significant correlation between IR and ALT/HDL-C, with odds ratios (OR) of 1.04 (95% CI = 1.02-1.05) in males and 1.04 (95% CI = 1.02-1.07) in females. A non-linear association and saturation effect between ALT/HDL-C and IR risk were identified, with an inverted L shaped curve and an inflection point at 33.62. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of ALT/HDL-C was significantly larger (AUC = 0.725 for males and 0.696 for females, all p < 0.01) compared with the use of ALT, HDL-C, AST and AST/ALT. Subgroup analysis showed a significantly higher independent association in obese individuals and individuals aged ≥50 years (All P interaction <0.05). Conclusion: Elevated ALT/HDL-C demonstrates a significant correlation with IR, which can be used as a potential indicator of IR in American adults.

ABSTRACT

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), closely linked to environmental factors, poses a significant public health challenge. This study, based on 529 triple-repeated measures from key national environmental pollution area and multiple gene-related public databases, employs various epidemiological and bioinformatics models to assess the impact of combined heavy metal exposure (Chromium [Cr], Cadmium [Cd], and Lead [Pb]) on early renal injury and CKD in the elderly. Introducing the novel Enviro-Target Mendelian Randomization method, our research explores the causal relationship between metals and CKD. The findings indicate a positive correlation between increased levels of metal and renal injury, with combined exposure caused renal damage more significantly than individual exposure. The study reveals that metals primarily influence CKD development through oxidative stress and metal ion resistance pathways, focusing on three related genes (SOD2, MPO, NQO1) and a transcription factor (NFE2L2). Metals were found to regulate oxidative stress levels in the body by increasing the expression of SOD2, MPO, NQO1, and decreasing NFE2L2, leading to CKD onset. Our research establishes a new causal inference framework linking environmental pollutants-pathways-genes-CKD, assessing the impact and mechanisms of metal exposure on CKD. Future studies with more extensive in vitro evidence and larger population are needed to validate.

Constructing versatile metal nanoclusters (NCs) assemblies through noncovalent weak interactions between inter-ligands is a long-standing challenge in interfacial chemistry, while compelling interfacial hydrogen-bond-driven metal NCs assemblies remain unexplored so far. Here, the study reports an amination-ligand o-phenylenediamine-coordinated copper NCs (CuNCs), demonstrating the impact of interfacial hydrogen-bonds (IHBs) motifs on the luminescent behaviors of metal NCs as the alteration of protic solvent. Experimental results supported by theoretical calculation unveil that the flexibility of interfacial ligand and the distance of cuprophilic CuI···CuI interaction between intra-/inter-NCs can be tailored by manipulating the cooperation between the diverse IHBs motifs reconstruction, therewith the IHBs-modulated fundamental structure-property relationships are established. Importantly, by utilizing the IHBs-mediated optical polychromatism of aminated CuNCs, portable visualization of humidity sensing test-strips with fast response is successfully manufactured. This work not only provides further insights into exploring the interfacial chemistry of NCs based on inter-ligands hydrogen-bond interactions, but also offers a new opportunity to expand the practical application for optical sensing of metal NCs.

ABSTRACT

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common cardiovascular complication of diabetes, which may threaten the quality of life and shorten life expectancy in the diabetic population. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the diabetes cardiomyopathy are not fully elucidated. We analyzed two datasets from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Differentially expressed and weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA) was used to screen key genes and molecules. Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis were constructed to identify hub genes. The diagnostic value of the hub gene was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC). Quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to validate the hub genes. A total of 13 differentially co-expressed modules were selected by WGCNA and differential expression analysis. KEGG and GO analysis showed these DEGs were mainly enriched in lipid metabolism and myocardial hypertrophy pathway, cytomembrane, and mitochondrion. As a result, six genes were identified as hub genes. Finally, five genes (Pdk4, Lipe, Serpine1, Igf1r, and Bcl2l1) were found significantly changed in both the validation dataset and experimental mice with DCM. In conclusion, the present study identified five genes that may help provide novel targets for diagnosing and treating DCM.

BACKGROUND: Oncomelania hupensis is the exclusive intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum in China. Snail control is an essential component of schistosomiasis elimination programme. With 70 years of continuous efforts, the range of O. hupensis had reduced significantly, but slowed down in last decades. A large number of levees against flooding were constructed along Yangtze River and its affiliated lakes in the middle and lower reaches, which influenced the hydrology and ecology in the alluvial plains. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of levees on the distribution of O. hupensis in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. METHODS: The snail habitats were digitalised by hand-held GPS system. The years for discovery and elimination of snail habitats were extracted from historical records. The accumulated snail-infested range for each habitat was calculated on the basis of annual reports. The current distribution of O. hupensis was determined by systematic and environmental sampling. The geographical distribution of levees was obtained from satellite imagery. To assess the impact of levees, the data pertaining to O. hupensis were divided into two parts: inside and outside the Yangtze River. Joinpoint regression was utilised to divide the study time span and further characterise the regression in each period. The 5-year-period moving averages of eliminated area infested by snails were calculated for the habitats inside and outside Yangtze River. The moving routes of corresponding geographical median centres were simulated in ArcGIS. Hotspot analysis was used to determine the areas with statistical significance clustering of O. hupensis density. RESULTS: Three periods were identified according to Joinpoint regression both inside and outside Yangtze River. The area infested by O. hupensis increased in the first two periods. It decreased rapidly outside Yangtze River year over year after 1970, while that inside the Yangtze River did not change significantly. Furthermore, the latter was significantly higher than the former. It was observed that the present density of O. hupensis inside Yangtze River was lower than outside the Yangtze River. The median centre for eliminated ranges inside Yangtze River wavered between the east (lower reach) and the west (middle reach). In contrast, the median centre for eliminated ranges continuously moved from the east to the west. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that the levees had a considerable negative impact on the distribution of O. hupensis outside Yangtze River. Some hotspots observed in the irrigation areas need a sluice system at the inlet of branch for snail control. The major distribution of O. hupensis located in Hubei might be caused by severe waterlogging. The intensive surveillance should be implemented there. The biggest two freshwater lakes, the major endemic regions historically, were identified as cold spots. The long-term impact of Three Gorges Dam on the distribution of O. hupensis in the lakes should be monitored and evaluated.

Objective:To analyze the factors influencing the prognosis of sudden sensorineural deafness in children, and to provide theoretical basis for clinical prevention and treatment. Methods:The clinical data of 109 children with sudden deafness admitted to our hospital from 2016 to 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The children were grouped according to eight related factors, including gender, age, climate, duration of hearing loss, concomitant symptoms, degree of hearing loss, sicken ear, and auditory curve. The chi-square test was used for univariate analysis, and logistic regression was employed to identify factors influencing prognosis. Results:After conventional treatment, 56 cases were ineffective(51.40%), 30 cases were effective(27.5%), 13 cases were effective(11.9%), 10 cases were cured(9.2%), and the total effective rate was 48.6%. Among concomitant symptoms, children with tinnitus had better treatment results(P<0.05); In the degree of hearing loss, the effective rate of mild hearing loss was the highest(83.3%), and the effective rate of very severe hearing loss was the lowest(40.0%). The prognosis of low frequency decline and high frequency decline were better(P<0.05); There was no significant correlation between gender, age, climate, duration of hearing loss, sicken ear and prognosis(P>0.05). Conclusion:The auditory curve and the degree of hearing loss are the factors affecting the prognosis of children with sudden deafness. Additionally, children with tinnitus tend to have a better prognosis.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of succinylation treatment on the physicochemical properties of black bean proteins (BBPI), and the relationship mechanism between BBPI structure and gel properties was further analyzed. The results demonstrated that the covalent formation of higher-molecular-weight complexes with BBPI could be achieved by succinic anhydride (SA). With the addition of SA at 10% (v/v), the acylation of proteins amounted to 92.53 ± 1.10%, at which point there was a minimized particle size of the system (300.90 ± 9.57 nm). Meanwhile, the protein structure was stretched with an irregular curl content of 34.30% and the greatest processable flexibility (0.381 ± 0.004). The dense three-dimensional mesh structure of the hydrogel as revealed by scanning electron microscopy was the fundamental prerequisite for the ability to resist external extrusion. The thermally induced hydrogels of acylated proteins with 10% (v/v) addition of SA showed excellent gel elastic behavior (1.44 ± 0.002 nm) and support capacity. Correlation analysis showed that the hydrogel strength and stability of hydrogels were closely related to the changes in protein conformation. This study provides theoretical guidance for the discovery of flexible proteins and their application in hydrogels.

BACKGROUND: Contralateral differences in brachial SBP are indicative of underlaying cardiovascular issues. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of contralateral differences in ankle SBP, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and heart-ankle pulse wave velocity (haPWV) with incident heart failure and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. METHODS: Cox proportional-hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) in 5077 participants (75 ±â€Š5 years) of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. RESULTS: Over a mean follow-up of 7.5 ±â€Š2.2 years, there were 457 heart failure events, 1275 all-cause and 363 cardiovascular deaths. Interankle SBP difference of at least 10 mmHg [hazard ratio = 1.12; confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.28], at least 15 mmHg (hazard ratio = 1.21; CI 1.03-1.43), contralateral difference in baPWV more than 240 cm/s (hazard ratio = 1.22; CI 1.02-1.46), and haPWV more than 80 cm/s (hazard ratio = 1.24; CI 1.04-1.48) were each independently associated with all-cause mortality after adjustment for confounders. Contralateral differences in ankle SBP of at least 15 mmHg (hazard ratio = 1.56; CI 1.17-2.09), and haPWV more than 80 cm/s (hazard ratio = 1.42; CI 1.03-1.96) were both independently associated with cardiovascular mortality. Unadjusted analysis revealed that those with contralateral differences in ankle SBP of at least 10 and at least 15 mmHg, baPWV more than 240, and haPWV more than 80 cm/s had higher risks of heart failure (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These results underscore the significance of evaluating contralateral differences in ankle SBP and PWV as potential markers of increased mortality risk among older adults.

Background: To compare the efficacy of intravitreal injections of Conbercept combined with dexamethasone (DEX) for macular edema (ME) following central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Methods: This was a prospective, single-masked, randomised, controlled clinical trial. Patients with ME following CRVO were randomised into groups to receive intravitreal injections of 0.5 mg Conbercept plus 0.2 mg DEX or 0.5 mg Conbercept alone on day 0 followed by repeat injections as indicated. The primary outcome measure was the change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline to month 12. Secondary outcome measures included decrease in central retinal thickness (CRT), injection frequency and interval and percentage of patients who gained more than 15 ETDRS letters or achieved a CRT of < 250 µm at month 12. Results: 33 males (51%) and 32 females (49%) were initially recruited with an average age of 56.64 ± 13.88 years. Patients in the Conbercept and Conbercept + DEX groups gained an average of 14.55 ± 19.19 and 14.88 ± 17.68 ETDRS letters, respectively, at months 12 (t = 4.221, P = 0.000; and t = 4.834, P = 0.000) with no significant difference between the two groups (t = 0.071, P = 0.943). In the Conbercept group, the mean reduction in CRT from baseline to month 12 was 435.26 ± 293.37 µm (t = 8.261, P = 0.000) compared to 431.36 ± 294.55 (t = 8.413, P = 0.000) in the Conbercept + DEX group. There was no significant difference between the two groups (t = 0.053, P = 0.958). The Conbercept + DEX group received fewer intravitreal injections. No major complications occurred. Conclusion: Conbercept, alone or with DEX, can improve BCVA and reduce CRT in ME following CRVO without serious adverse events. The treatment interval was longer in the Conbercept + DEX group. BACKGROUND: Abdominal cocoon is a very uncommon yet dangerous cause of intestinal obstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 62-year-old Asian male patient with a history of depression who exhibited an idiopathic abdominal cocoon complicated by necrosis. Upon laparotomy investigation, nearly the entire small intestine was enveloped in a thick membrane resembling a cocoon, and it was discovered that he lacked a greater omentum. The patient recovered well and was discharged on an oral diet on the 20th day following surgery. During the 3-month follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic, even gaining 10 kg in weight, and noted that his depression had improved. CONCLUSIONS: Small bowel obstruction presents with nonspecific symptoms, posing challenges in differential diagnosis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography is recommended since it facilitates precise preoperative assessment, optimizing surgical planning and reducing postoperative complications. Remarkably, cessation of antidepressant medication post-surgery hints at a potential correlation between omental deficit, gut microbiota alterations, and depressive symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Ozone pollution is increasingly recognized as a serious environmental threat that exacerbates dementia risks, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Amid rapid industrialization, China faces significant air quality challenges. However, there has been a scarcity of detailed studies assessing the health and economic impacts of ozone pollution on these conditions. This study aims to address this gap by utilizing the BenMap-CE tool and incorporating parameters obtained from systematic reviews of epidemiologic studies, official statistics, and weighted averages, to accurately quantify the effects of ozone exposure in China. This research evaluated the health and economic burdens at both national and provincial levels, focusing on the additional impacts attributed to increased ozone levels. The results reveal that in 2023, compared to 2015, ozone pollution contributed to approximately 110,000 new cases (5.6 per 10,000) of AD and 1.6 million new cases (81.7 per 10,000) of MCI, imposing significant economic costs of about 1,200 million USD for AD and 18,000 million USD for MCI, based on 2015 dollar values. Additionally, our projections indicate that reducing the 2023 ozone concentrations to 70 µg/m3 could significantly curb these conditions, potentially preventing over 210,000 new AD cases (10.7 per 10,000) and 2.9 million (148.1 per 10,000) MCI cases. Such reductions are projected to yield substantial economic benefits, estimated at 2,200 million USD for AD and 34,000 million USD for MCI (2015 dollar values). These findings underscore the profound implications of ozone pollution on public health and the economy in China, highlighting the urgent need for effective ozone management strategies to mitigate these impacts.
