ABSTRACT

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor with reproductive toxicity. Further, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VD3) plays an important role in male reproduction by binding vitamin D receptor (VDR) and mediating the pleiotropic biological actions that include spermatogenesis. However, whether VD3/VDR regulates the effect of BPA on Leydig cells (LCs) injury remains unknown. This study aimed to explore the effects of VD on BPA-induced cytotoxicity in mouse LCs. Hereby, LCs treated with BPA, VD3, or both were subjected to the assays of cell apoptosis, proliferation, autophagy, and levels of target proteins. This study unveiled that cell viability was dose-dependently reduced after exposure to BPA. BPA treatment significantly inhibited LC proliferation, induced apoptosis, and also downregulated VDR expression. By jointly analyzing transcriptome data and Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) data, autophagy signaling pathways related to testicular development and male reproduction were screened out. Therefore, the autophagy phenomenon of cells was further detected. The results showed that BPA treatment could activate cell autophagy, Vdr-/- inhibits cell autophagy, and active VD3 does not have a significant effect on the autophagy of normal LCs. After VD3 and BPA were used in combination, the autophagy of cells was further enhanced, and VD3 could alleviate BPA-induced damage of LCs. In conclusion, this study found that supplementing VD3 could eliminate the inhibition of BPA on VDR expression, further enhance LCs autophagy effect, and alleviate the inhibition of LCs proliferation and induction of apoptosis by BPA, playing a protective role in cells. The research results will provide valuable strategies to alleviate BPA-induced reproductive toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Learning curves have been used in the field of RG. However, it should be noted that the previous study did not comprehensively investigate all changes related to the learning curve.This study aims to establish a learning curve for radical robotic gastrectomy (RG) and evaluate its effect on the short-term outcomes of patients with gastric cancer. METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 527 patients who underwent RG between August 2016 and June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Learning curves related to the operation time and postoperative hospital stay were determined separately using cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis. Then, the impact of the learning curve on surgical efficacy was analyzed. RESULTS: Combining the CUSUM curve break points and technical optimization time points, the entire cohort was divided into three phases (patients 1-100, 101-250, and 251-527). The postoperative complication rate and postoperative recovery time tended to decrease significantly with phase advancement (P<0.05). More extraperigastric examined lymph nodes (LN) were retrieved in phase III than in phase I (I vs. III, 15.12±6.90 vs. 17.40±7.05, P=0.005). The rate of LN noncompliance decreased with phase advancement. Textbook outcome (TO) analysis showed that the learning phase was an independent factor in TO attainment (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: With learning phase advancement, the short-term outcomes were significantly improved. It is possible that our optimization of surgical procedures could have contributed to this improvement. The findings of this study facilitate the safe dissemination of RG in the minimally invasive era.

BACKGROUND: The effects of the dynamics of serum tumor markers (CA72-4, CEA, CA19-9, CA125 and AFP) before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) on the prognosis of gastric cancer(GC) patients remain unclear. METHODS: The training set contained 334 GC patients from Fujian Medical University Union Hospital (FJMUUH) and 113 GC patients in Qinghai University Affiliated Hospital (QhUAH) were used as an external validation set. Tumor marker regression load (ΔTMRL) indicator, including ΔCA72-4, ΔCEA, ΔCA19-9, ΔCA125, and ΔAFP, is defined as [(postNACT marker- preNACT marker)/preNACT marker]. Tumor marker regression load score (TMRLS) consists of ΔCA72-4, ΔCEA and ΔCA125. The predictive performance of the nomogram-TMRLS was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve(AUC), decision curve analysis(DCA), and C-index. RESULTS: Patients from FJMUUH were divided into two groups, TMRLS-low and TMRLS-high, determined by R package maxstat. Survival analysis revealed a higher 3-year overall survival(OS) in the TMRLS-low than in the TMRLS-high group. The TMRLS-high group who received postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy(AC) showed a significantly higher 3-year OS rate than those who did not. Multivariate COX regression analysis indicated that TMRLS was an independent prognostic factor for OS. A nomogram for predicting OS based on TMRLS showed a significantly higher C-index and AUC than the ypTNM stage. The above results were also found in the QhUAH external validation cohort. CONCLUSION: TMRLS is a novel independent prognostic factor for GC who underwent NACT and a radical gastrectomy. Furthermore, the TMRLS-high group, who received postoperative AC, may achieve better survival outcomes. Notably, the predictive performance of the nomogram-TMRLS significantly outperformed that of the ypTNM stage.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The role of minimally invasive surgery using robotics versus laparoscopy in resectable gastric cancer patients with a high body mass index (BMI) remains controversial. METHODS: A total of 482 gastric adenocarcinoma patients with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 who underwent minimally invasive radical gastrectomy between August 2016 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed, including 109 cases in the robotic gastrectomy (RG) group and 321 cases in the laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) group. Propensity score matching (PSM) with a 1:1 ratio was performed, and the perioperative outcomes, lymph node dissection, and 3-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates were compared. RESULTS: After PSM, 109 patients were included in each of the RG and LG groups, with balanced baseline characteristics. Compared with the LG group, the RG group had similar intraoperative estimated blood loss [median (IQR) 30 (20-50) vs. 35 (30-59) mL, median difference (95%CI) - 5 (- 10 to 0)], postoperative complications [13.8% vs. 18.3%, OR (95%CI) 0.71 (0.342 to 1.473)], postoperative recovery, total harvested lymph nodes [(34.25 ± 13.43 vs. 35.44 ± 14.12, mean difference (95%CI) - 1.19 (- 4.871 to 2.485)] and textbook outcomes [(81.7% vs. 76.1%, OR (95%CI) 1.39 (0.724 to 2.684)]. Among pathological stage II-III patients receiving chemotherapy, the initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy in the RG group was similar to that in the LG group [median (IQR): 28 (25.5-32.5) vs. 32 (27-38.5) days, median difference (95%CI) - 3 (- 6 to 0)]. The 3-year OS (RG vs. LG: 80.7% vs. 81.7%, HR = 1.048, 95%CI 0.591 to 1.857) and DFS (78% vs. 76.1%, HR = 0.996, 95%CI 0.584 to 1.698) were comparable between the two groups. CONCLUSION: RG conferred comparable lymph node dissection, postoperative recovery, and oncologic outcomes in a selected cohort of patients with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Previous studies have explored the role of immune cells on osteonecrosis. This Mendelian randomization (MR) study further assessed 731 immunocyte phenotypes on osteonecrosis whether a causal relationship exists and provides some evidence of causality. METHODS: The 731 immunocyte phenotypes and osteonecrosis data used in this study were obtained from their respective genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We used inverse variable weighting (IVW) as the primary analysis method. In addition, we simultaneously employed multiple analytical methods, including MR-Egger, weighted mode, simple mode, and weighted median, to strengthen the final results. Finally, sensitivity analyses were conducted to verify the stability and feasibility of the data. RESULTS: The results of the IVW method of MR analysis showed that 8 immunocyte phenotypes were positively associated with osteonecrosis (P<0.05, OR > 1); 18 immunocyte phenotypes were negatively associated with osteonecrosis (P<0.05, OR<1), none of which were heterogeneous or horizontally pleiotropic (P > 0.05) or reverse causality. In addition to this, in reverse MR, osteonecrosis was positively associated with 10 additional immunocyte phenotypes (P<0.05, OR > 1) and negatively associated with 14 immunocyte phenotypes (P<0.05, OR<1). And none of them had heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy (P > 0.05) or reverse causality. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated a complex causal relationship between multiple immune phenotypes and osteonecrosis through a comprehensive two-way two-sample MR analysis, highlighting the complex pattern of interactions between the immune system and osteonecrosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is the tumor type with the highest incidence of perineural invasion. This study tries to identify the differentially expressed genes regulated between pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissues with perineural invasion and without perineural invasion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The GSE102238 profile was downloaded. Gene function and pathway analysis were subsequently conducted. A protein-protein interaction network was constructed to search for hub genes. Both univariate Cox analysis and multivariate Cox analysis were calculated to identify prognostic factors. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and overall survival analysis of hub genes were used to verify. RESULTS: Our study identified 242 differentially expressed genes including 68 upregulated differentially expressed genes and 174 downregulated differentially expressed genes, which were involved in important functions and pathways. Nine relevant core genes using protein-protein interaction analysis as well as nestin (NES)/vascular endothlial growth factor (VEGF) signaling pathway which is highly related to the pathological process of perineural invasion in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma were also discovered. The differentiation was identified as an independent prognostic factor (P < .05) after multivariate Cox analysis. Three upregulated genes (JUP, CALM1, and NES) and 6 downregulated genes (EPHA2, ARF1, ORM2, TERT, IL18, and CXCL3) were validated by quantitative RT-PCR and they all had markedly worse overall survival (P < .05). CONCLUSION: This analysis showed that 9 core genes including JUP, CALM1, NES, EPHA2, ARF1, ORM2, TERT, IL18, and CXCL3, as well as NES/VEGF signaling pathway, have a relationship with the development process of perineural invasion in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Cox analysis and overall survival analysis suggested differentiation as an independent prognostic factor and key roles for these 9 hub genes in perineural invasion prognosis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Assembling a heterostructure is an effective strategy for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of hybrid materials. Herein, CoFe-layered double hydroxide and Co-metal-organic framework (CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF) hollow heterostructure nanorod arrays are synthesized. First, [Co(DIPL)(H3BTC)(H2O)2]n [named as Co-MOF, DIPL = 2,6-di(pyrid-4-yl)-4-phenylpyridine, H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid] crystalline materials with a uniform hollow structure were prepared on the nickel foam. The CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF composite perfectly inherits the original hollow nanorod array morphology after the subsequent electrodeposition process. Optimized CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF hollow heterostructure nanorod arrays display excellent performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with ultralow overpotentials of 215 mV to deliver current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and maintain the electrocatalytic activity for a duration as long as 220 h, ranking it one of the non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for OER. Density functional theory calculations validate the reduction in free energy for the rate-determining step by the synergistic effect of Co-MOF and CoFe-LDH, with the increased charge density and noticeable electron transfer at the Co-O site, which highlights the capability of Co-MOF to finely adjust the electronic structure and facilitate the creation of active sites. This work establishes an experimental and theoretical basis for promoting efficient water splitting through the design of heterostructures in catalysts.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Preoperative sarcopenia is associated with prognosis in patients with gastric cancer (GC); however, studies with 10-year survival follow-up are lacking. METHODS: Consecutive patients with GC who underwent radical gastrectomy between December 2009-2012 were included retrospectively. Preoperative sarcopenia was diagnosed using computed tomography skeletal muscle index. The Kaplan-Meier method estimated overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS). Cox proportional hazard regression analysis determined the prognostic factors for OS and RFS. RESULTS: In total, 781 patients with GC were included; among these, 207 (26.5%) had preoperative sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia had significantly lower 10-year OS and RFS than patients without sarcopenia (39.61% vs. 58.71% and 39.61% vs. 57.84%, respectively). Further, preoperative sarcopenia was an independent risk factor for 10-year OS (HR = 1.467; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.169-1.839) and RFS (HR = 1.450; 95% CI: 1.157-1.819). Patients with sarcopenia had a higher risk of death and recurrence in the first 10 years postoperatively than patients without sarcopenia. Additionally, the risk of death (HR = 2.62; 95% CI:1.581-4.332) and recurrence (HR = 2.34; 95% CI:1.516-3.606) was the highest in the 1st postoperative year and remained relatively stable thereafter. Further, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improved 10-year OS (p = 0.006; HR = 0.558) and RFS (p = 0.008; HR = 0.573) in patients with TNM stage II-III GC that presented with sarcopenia. CONCLUSION: Preoperative sarcopenia remained an independent risk factor for postoperative very long-term prognosis of GC. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy improved the long-term outcomes of stage II-III patients with sarcopenia.

ABSTRACT

The considerable risk posed by Au3+ residues to the environment and human health has sparked interest in researching Au3+ monitoring techniques. The detection results in the usual ratio mode are more reliable. In this work, we develop a dual-mode strategy based on reducing carbon dots coupling with two-signal ratiometric and colorimetric methods for high-sensitivity, good-selectivity, and wide-range detection of Au3+. Cyan carbon dots (C-CDs) were synthesized by a simple and efficient one-step hydrothermal method. The C-CDs with rich amino group used m-phenylenediamine as carbon source, which made it have the potential as a reducing agent. After the addition of Au3+, Au3+ was reduced to Au0, generating stable gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The fluorescence signal (F490) of C-CDs decreased. At the same time, the large size of AuNPs enhances the second-order scattering signal (S770) and produces the UV-visible absorption peak of AuNPs. Therefore, the dual-mode sensing strategy combining S770/F490 ratiometric and colorimetric detection of Au3+ is realized with high accuracy and sensitivity. Au3+ was determined in real samples and a good recovery was obtained. The dual-mode method has good performance and practicality, so it shows great potential for environment testing in a simple and reliable way.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the risk of sarcopenia and osteoporosis in elderly patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We recruited both OSAS patients and non-OSAS subjects from multiple centers and evaluated their skeletal muscle index (SMI), bone mineral density (BMD), and inflammatory factors. All participants underwent polysomnography (PSG) testing, handgrip strength testing, chest CT, and dual-energy x-ray BMD testing. Based on the PSG diagnosis results, the participants were divided into a control group and an OSAS group. The analysis results revealed a higher incidence of sarcopenia in the OSAS group (χ2 = 22.367; P = 0.000) and osteoporosis (χ2 = 11.730a; P = 0.001). There were statistically significant differences in BMI (P = 0.000), grip strength (P = 0.000), SMI (P = 0.000), bone density (P = 0.000) and vitamin D (P = 0.000). The independent sample t test results showed that there was no statistical difference between IL-6 (P = 0.247) and CRP (P = 0.246). Considering the potential impact of body weight on the observed indicators, we employed covariance analysis to calculate the modified P value for each observation indicator. The findings demonstrated that the grip strength, IL-6, and CRP levels in the OSAS group were significantly higher compared to the control group. Conversely, the SMI, bone density, and Vitamin D levels were found to be significantly lower in the OSAS group than in the control group. These results suggest a higher likelihood of sarcopenia and osteoporosis among OSAS patients. Further studies should be conducted in larger study populations.

ABSTRACT

As the largest organ of the body, the skin participates in various physiological activities, such as barrier function, sensory function, and temperature regulation, thereby maintaining the balance between the body and the natural environment. To date, compositional and transcriptional profiles in chicken skin cells have not been reported. Here, we report detailed transcriptome analyses of cell populations present in the skin of a black-feather chicken and a white-feather chicken using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). By analyzing cluster-specific gene expression profiles, we identified 12 cell clusters, and their corresponding cell types were also characterized. Subsequently, we characterized the subpopulations of keratinocytes, myocytes, mesenchymal cells, fibroblasts, and melanocytes. It is worth noting that we have identified a subpopulation of keratinocytes involved in pigment granule capture and a subpopulation of melanocytes involved in pigment granule deposition, both of which have a higher cell abundance in black-feather chicken compared to white-feather chicken. Meanwhile, we also compared the cellular heterogeneity features of Lueyang black-bone chicken skin with different feather colors. In addition, we also screened out 12 genes those could be potential markers of melanocytes. Finally, we validated the specific expression of SGK1, WNT5A, CTSC, TYR, and LAPTM5 in black-feather chicken, which may be the key candidate genes determining the feather color differentiation of Lueyang black-bone chicken. In summary, this study first revealed the transcriptome characteristics of chicken skin cells via scRNA-seq technology. These datasets provide valuable information for the study of avian skin characteristics and have important implications for future poultry breeding.

OBJECTIVE: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common orthopedic disease with a high disability rate. The clinical effect of BuShenHuoXue decoction (BSHX) for ONFH is satisfactory. We aimed to elucidate the potential angiogenic mechanisms of BSHX in a rat femoral osteonecrosis model and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). METHODS: With in vivo experiments, we established the steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) model using Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (8-week-old). The rats were randomly divided into five group of 12 rats each and given the corresponding interventions: control, model (gavaged with 0.9% saline), BSHX low-, medium- and high-dose groups (0.132 3, 0.264 6, and 0.529 2 g/mL BSHX solution by gavage). After 12 weeks, haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was preformed to evaluate rat osteonecrosis. the expression of angiogenic factors (CD31, VEGFA, KDR, VWF) in rat femoral head was detected by immunohistochemistry, qPCR and western blotting. In cell experiment, BMSCs were isolated and cultured in the femoral bone marrow cavity of 4-week-old SD rats. BMSCs were randomly divided into eight groups and intervened with different doses of BSHX-containing serum and glucocorticoids: control group (CG); BSHX low-, medium-, and high-dose groups (CG + 0.661 5, 1.323, and 2.646 g/kg BSHX gavage rat serum); dexamethasone (Dex) group; and Dex + BSHX low-, medium-, and high-dose groups (Dex + 0.661 5, 1.323, and 2.646 g/kg BSHX gavaged rat serum), the effects of BSHX-containing serum on the angiogenic capacity of BMSCs were examined by qPCR and Western blotting. A co-culture system of rat aortic endothelial cells (RAOECs) and BMSCs was then established. Migration and angiogenesis of RAOECs were observed using angiogenesis and transwell assay. Identification of potential targets of BSHX against ONFH was obtained using network pharmacology. RESULTS: BSHX upregulated the expression of CD31, VEGFA, KDR, and VWF in rat femoral head samples and BMSCs (p < 0.05, vs. control group or model group). Different concentrations of BSHX-containing serum significantly ameliorated the inhibition of CD31, VEGFA, KDR and VWF expression by high concentrations of Dex. BSHX-containing serum-induced BMSCs promoted the migration and angiogenesis of RAOECs, reversed to some extent the adverse effect of Dex on microangiogenesis in RAOECs, and increased the number of microangiogenic vessels. Furthermore, we identified VEGFA, COL1A1, COL3A1, and SPP1 as important targets of BSHX against ONFH. CONCLUSION: BSHX upregulated the expression of angiogenic factors in the femoral head tissue of ONFH model rats and promoted the angiogenic capacity of rat RAOECs and BMSCs. ABSTRACT

Whole-brain genome editing to correct single-base mutations and reduce or reverse behavioral changes in animal models of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has not yet been achieved. We developed an apolipoprotein B messenger RNA-editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-embedded cytosine base editor (AeCBE) system for converting C·G to T·A base pairs. We demonstrate its effectiveness by targeting AeCBE to an ASD-associated mutation of the MEF2C gene (c.104T>C, p.L35P) in vivo in mice. We first constructed Mef2cL35P heterozygous mice. Male heterozygous mice exhibited hyperactivity, repetitive behavior and social abnormalities. We then programmed AeCBE to edit the mutated C·G base pairs of Mef2c in the mouse brain through the intravenous injection of blood-brain barrier-crossing adeno-associated virus. This treatment successfully restored Mef2c protein levels in several brain regions and reversed the behavioral abnormalities in Mef2c-mutant mice. Our work presents an in vivo base-editing paradigm that could potentially correct single-base genetic mutations in the brain.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Robotic gastrectomy (RG) has been widely used to treat gastric cancer. However, whether the short-term outcomes of robotic gastrectomy are superior to those of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer has not been reported. METHODS: The study enrolled of 594 elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent robotic or laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. The RG cohort was matched 1:3 with the LG cohort using propensity score-matching (PSM). RESULTS: After PSM, 121 patients were included in the robot group and 363 patients in the laparoscopic group. Excluding the docking and undocking times, the operation time of the two groups was similar (P = 0.617). The RG group had less intraoperative blood loss than the LG group (P < 0.001). The time to ambulation and first liquid food intake was significantly shorter in the RG group than in the LG group (P < 0.05). The incidence of postoperative complications did not differ significantly between the two groups (P = 0.14). Significantly more lymph nodes were dissected in the RG group than in the LG group (P = 0.001). Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy was started earlier in the RG group than in the LG group (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: For elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer, RG is safe and feasible. Compared with LG, RG is associated with less intraoperative blood loss; a faster postoperative recovery time, allowing a greater number of lymph nodes to be dissected; and earlier adjuvant chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether diabetes mellitus is causally associated with osteonecrosis. METHOD: Using publicly accessible genome-wide association study statistics, a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis was carried out. In order to determine whether diabetes has a causal effect on osteonecrosis and whether osteonecrosis has a causal effect on diabetes, we extracted six date on diabetes in Europeans from IEU OpenGWAS and GWAS Catalogue and osteonecrosis in Europeans from FinnGen. We then evaluated the data using inverse variance weighting, MR-Egger regression, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode. The results' stability and dependability were then evaluated using sensitivity analysis and heterogeneity analysis. Finally, meta-analysis is used to further confirm if there is a relationship between diabetes and osteonecrosis. RESULTS: When diabetes was used as an exposure factor, MR-Egger regression showed that directional fold product was unlikely to bias the results. Cochran's Q test showed only minor heterogeneity in a few data sets. Multidirectional tests Egger-intercept, MR-PRESSO and funnel plots for most data did not show multidirectional and asymmetry at the gene level. Most of the IVW results showed no causal relationship between diabetes mellitus and osteonecrosis. The results of meta-analysis of IVW methods further confirmed the absence of a causal relationship. Inverse MR analysis also showed no causal relationship between osteonecrosis and diabetes. CONCLUSION: Results of bidirectional MR analysis show no evidence of causal relationship between diabetes and osteonecrosis.

ABSTRACT

Background: Falls place a heavy burden on older adults and families, and there was little research on the relationship between falls and depressive symptoms among older adults in China. This study is designed to examine the association between falls and depressive symptoms in Chinese older adults. Methods: This study was based on 9,539 data sets from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2018. The 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CESD-10) was used to access depressive symptoms in older adults. A logistic regression model was used to calculate multivariate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for falls and depressive symptoms, adjusted for possible confounders. The Classification and regression tree (CART) demonstrates the prediction of the target variable values based on other variables. Results: In this study, 9,539 older people were selected: 60-69 years old accounted for 63.0%, 70-79 years old accounted for 29.7%, and 80 years old and above accounted for 7.3%. Male accounted for 49.7% and female for 50.3%. The rate of falls among older adults was 21.4%, and the rate of depressive symptoms was 33.9%. Adjusted ORs (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.53) showed a significant association between falls and depressive symptoms among older adults. Subgroup analysis revealed that this association was statistically significant across male (OR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.53) and female (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.64), 60-69 aged (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.19, 1.60) and 70-79 aged (OR =1.42, 95% CI: 1.16, 1.74), rural (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.61), <15,000 CNY (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.19, 1.54) and more than 25,000 CNY (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.85). Additionally, The CART model showed that the probability (73.0%) of falls was highest among older adults with depressive symptoms who self-rated poor health and female gender. Conclusions: This cross-sectional study demonstrated a significant association between falls and depressive symptoms in Chinese older adults. The findings provide some evidence and support for risk monitoring, screening for depressive symptoms, and early prevention in the high-risk older population.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common, refractory and disabling disease of orthopedic department, which is one of the common causes of hip pain and dysfunction. Recent studies have shown that much progress has been made in the research of programmed cell death (PCD) in ONFH. However, there is no bibliometric analysis in this research field. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hot spots of PCD in ONFH through bibliometrics. METHOD: The literature search related to ONFH and PCD was conducted on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from 2002 to 2021. The VOSviewers, "bibliometrix" R package and CiteSpace were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis. RESULTS: In total, 346 articles from 27 countries led by China and USA and Japan were included. The number of publications related to PCD in ONFH is increasing year by year. Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi An Jiao Tong University, Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology are the main research institutions. Molecular Medicine Reports is the most popular journal in the field of PCD in ONFH, and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research is the most cocited journal. These publications come from 1882 authors among which Peng Hao, Sun Wei, Zhang Chang-Qing, Zhang Jian and Wang Kun-zheng had published the most papers and Ronald S Weinstein was cocited most often. Apoptosis, osteonecrosis, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, glucocorticoid and femoral head appeared are the main topics the field of PCD in ONFH. Autophagy was most likely to be the current research hot spot for PCD in ONFH. CONCLUSION: This is the first bibliometric study that comprehensively summarizes the research trends and developments of PCD in ONFH. This information identified recent research frontiers and hot directions, which will provide a reference for scholars studying PCD in ONFH.

BACKGROUND: Due to lacking evidence on surveillance for gastric cancer (GC), this study aimed to determine the optimal postsurgical surveillance strategy for pathological stage (pStage) II/III GC patients and compare its cost-effectiveness with traditional surveillance strategies. METHODS: Prospectively collected data from stage II/III GC patients ( n =1661) who underwent upfront surgery at a large-volume tertiary cancer center in China (FJMUUH cohort) between January 2010 and October 2015. For external validation, two independent cohorts were included, which were composed of 380 stage II/III GC patients at an tertiary cancer center in U.S.A (Mayo cohort) between July 1991 and July 2012 and 270 stage II/III GC patients at another tertiary cancer center in China (QUAH cohort) between May 2010 and October 2014. Random forest models were used to predict dynamic recurrence hazards and to construct individual surveillance strategies for stage II/III GC. Cost-effectiveness was assessed by the Markov model. RESULTS: The median follow-up period of the FJMUUH, the Mayo, and QUAH cohorts were 55, 158, and 70 months, respectively. In the FJMUUH cohort, the 5-year recurrence risk was higher in pStage III compared with pStage II GC patients ( P <0.001). Our novel individual surveillance strategy achieved optimal cost-effectiveness for pStage II GC patients (ICER =$490/QALY). The most intensive NCCN surveillance guideline was more cost-effective (ICER =$983/QALY) for pStage III GC patients. The external validations confirmed our results. CONCLUSION: For patients with pStage II GC, individualized risk-based surveillance outperformed the JGCTG and NCCN surveillance guidelines. However, the NCCN surveillance guideline may be more suitable for patients with pStage III GC. Even though our results are limited by the retrospective study design, the authors believe that our findings should be considered when recommending postoperative surveillance for stage II/III GC with upfront surgery in the absence of a randomized clinical trial.

ABSTRACT

Color-tunable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with potential in many fields is of great importance but extremely challenging. It is necessary to comprehend the correlation between the molecular structure and property to design and synthesize such materials. Metal-organic coordination polymers (CPs) with good predesignability and precise structure have become a platform to construct RTP materials. Herein, three zinc-based CPs containing halogen and a flexible tetradentate ligand are synthesized. All of these CPs present two constant emission regions and an excitation-dependent emission region. Structure-property analysis shows that these emissions originate from isolated chromophores and dimerized chromophores as well as various charge transfers. The phosphorescence colors of these CPs can be modulated by excitation and temperature. This study provides a novel strategy to construct multicolor and multiresponsive RTP materials based on metal-organic coordination polymers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The long-term dynamic recurrence hazard of locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) in the clinical setting of adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the dynamic recurrence risk of LAGC in patients who received ACT or not. METHODS: The study assessed data from patients with LAGC who underwent radical gastrectomy between January, 2010 and October, 2015. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was performed to reduce selection bias between the ACT and observational (OBS) groups. Conditional recurrence-free survival (cRFS) and restricted mean survival time (RMST) were used to assess the survival differences. RESULTS: In total, 1,661 LAGC patients were included (ACT group, n = 1,236 and OBS group, n = 425). The recurrence hazard gradually declined; in contrast, cRFS increased with RFS already accrued. Following IPTW adjustment, the cRFS rates were higher in the ACT group than those in the OBS group for patients at baseline or with accrued RFS of 1 and 2 years (p˂0.05). However, the cRFS rates of the ACT group were comparable with those of the OBS group for patients with accrued RFS of 3 or more years (p > 0.05). Likewise, the 5-year △RMST between the ACT and OBS groups demonstrated a similar trend. Moreover, the hematological metastasis rate of the ACT group was significantly lower than that of the OBS group for patients at baseline or with accrued RFS of 1 and 2 years, respectively (p˂0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Although ACT could provide substantial benefits for patients with LAGC, the differences in recurrence hazard between the ACT and OBS groups may attenuate over time, which could help guide surveillance and alleviate patients' anxiety. Further prospective large-scale studies are warranted.
