ABSTRACT

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with multiple functions and permanent pores have received widespread attention due to their potential applications in gas adsorption/separation, drug delivery, photocatalysis, proton conduction, and other fields. Herein, we constructed a three-dimensional (3D) HOF with 1D square channels by utilizing a dual-functional tetrazolyl porphyrin ligand bearing an active center of the porphyrin core and open sites of nitrogen atoms through π-π stacking and hydrogen-bonding interaction self-assembly. The structure exhibits both solvent resistance and thermal stability, and especially, maintains these after being transformed into nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the active sites exposed on the inner wall of the pores can interact well with the photoactive cationic dye molecules to form an effective host-guest (H-G) system, which can realize boosted photosensitized singlet oxygen (1O2) production under red light irradiation and synergistic sterilization toward Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) with an inhibition ratio as high as 99.9%. This work provides a valuable design concept for HOF-related systems in pursuit of promoted photoactivity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the accuracy of prenatal fetal ultrasound (US) to detect cleft palate during the second and third trimester (12-36 weeks) of pregnancy in high-risk fetuses. METHODS: Pubmed and Embase databases were searched for studies that performed prenatal fetal US (comparator) and postnatal examination (reference standard) in fetuses at high risk for orofacial clefts. Risk of bias among included studies was assessed using the QUADAS-2. Area under the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve and pooled sensitivity and specificity were calculated. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included 7 studies involving 663 high-risk fetuses. The individual studies showed that prenatal fetal US accurately predicted the possibility of cleft palate in these fetuses. Pooled sensitivity was 87% (95% CI 71%-95%), pooled specificity was 98% (95%CI 90%-100%), and the area under the SROC curve was 0.98 (95% CI 0.97-0.99). CONCLUSION: Second and third trimester fetal US has excellent sensitivity and specificity for the detection of cleft palate in high-risk pregnancies.

ABSTRACT

Luminescent copper(I) halide complexes with bi- and tridentate rigid ligands have gained wide research interests. In this paper, six tetracoordinate dinuclear copper(I) halide complexes, Cu2X2(ppda)2 [ppda = 2-[2-(dimethylamino)phenyl(phenyl)phosphino]-N,N-dimethylaniline, X = I (1), Br (2), Cl (3)] and Cu2X2(pfda)2 [pfda = 2-[2-(dimethylamino)-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl(phenyl)phosphino]-N,N-dimethyl-5-trifluoromethylaniline, X = I (4), Br (5), Cl (6)], were successfully prepared and systematically characterized on their structures and photophysical properties. Complexes 1-5 have a centrosymmetric form with a planar Cu2X2 unit, and complex 6 has a mirror symmetry form with a butterfly-shaped Cu2X2. Solid complexes 1, 4, and 5 emit delayed fluorescence at room temperature, intense blue to greenish yellow (λmax = 443-570 nm) light, and their peak wavelengths are located at 443-570 nm with microsecond lifetimes (τ = 0.4-19.2 µs, ΦPL = 0.05-0.48). Complexes 2, 3, and 6 show prompt fluorescence, very weak yellowish green to yellow (λmax = 534-595 nm) emission with peak wavelengths at 534-595 nm, and lifetimes in nanoseconds (τ = 4.4-9.3 ns, ΦPL < 0.0001). (Metal + halide) to ligand and intraligand charge transitions are the main origin of the emission of the complexes. Solution-processed, complex-4-based nondoped and doped devices emit yellow green light with CIE coordinated at (0.41, 0.51), a maximum EQE up to 0.17%, and luminance reaching 75.52 cd/m2.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and stroke are two different diseases, but have many aspects in common. Aspirin is recommended as an initial treatment for the secondary prevention of recurrent ischemic stroke in patients with T2DM. However, clopidogrel is an oral antiplatelet drug that might be another choice in case of aspirin intolerance. In this analysis, we aimed to systematically compare aspirin versus clopidogrel monotherapy for the secondary prevention of recurrent cerebrovascular attack following previous ischemic stroke in patients with T2DM. METHODS: Online medical databases including Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane central, EMBASE and http://www.ClinicalTrials.com were searched for published articles that satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this study. Recurrent stroke, fatal stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, myocardial infarction and mortality were considered the main end points in these patients with T2DM. RevMan 5.3 software was used to statistically analyze the data representing each subgroup. Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to represent the results following analysis. RESULTS: A total of 9218 participants with T2DM who were previously affected by ischemic stroke were included in this analysis, whereby 4917 were assigned to aspirin and 4301 to clopidogrel. This current analysis showed that there was no significant difference in recurrent stroke rate (RR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.61-1.02; P = 0.07) observed with aspirin versus clopidogrel in these patients with T2DM. The risk of fatal stroke (RR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.39-1.98; P = 0.76), cerebral hemorrhage (RR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.38-1.11; P = 0.12), myocardial infarction (RR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.43-1.79; P = 0.71) and mortality (RR: 1.07, 95% CI: 0.90-1.27; P = 0.44) were also similarly manifested. CONCLUSION: Clopidogrel monotherapy was neither inferior nor superior to aspirin monotherapy for the secondary prevention of recurrent cerebrovascular attack following previous ischemic stroke in patients with T2DM. Hence, clopidogrel or aspirin monotherapy is equally safe and effective in these patients with T2DM.

ABSTRACT

In the course of our ongoing studies to discover bioactive chemical constituents from plants in the genus Isodon, two new diterpenes, kunminolide A (1) and rabdokunmin F (2) were isolated from the leaves of the medicinal plant Isodon interruptus. Kunminolide A (1) is a novel abietane-like diterpene with a novel skeleton, herein designated as 9, 10-seco-neoabietane. Rabdokunmin F (2) is an ent-kaurene diterpene with C-18 oxidized to a carboxylic acid group. The structures were determined by spectroscopic means including analysis of 1D- and 2D-NMR spectral data. Crystals of 1 obtained from methanol were suitable for X-ray analysis, which confirmed the chemical structure. Kunminolide A (1) demonstrated chemopreventive potential by inducing QR1 activity with a CD value of 14.3 µM, and rabdokunmin F (2) was found to have cytotoxic activities with IC50 values in the range of 1.1-3.0 µM.

ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in our country. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are being found to have relevance to human cancers, including GC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional role of circRNA BTG3 associated nuclear protein (circBANP) in GC and underlying mechanisms governing it. CircBANP was identified using RNase R assay and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with specific primers. The levels of circBANP, let-7a and Frizzled-5 (FZD5) mRNA were assessed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Cell proliferation, colony formation ability, apoptosis, and migration and invasion were determined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, colony formation assay, flow cytometry, transwell assay, respectively. The targeted interaction between let-7a and circBANP or FZD5 was confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assay or RNA pull-down assay. Western blot analysis was performed to detect the indicated protein expression. A xenograft model assay was established to observe the role of circBANP in vivo. We found that circBANP was up-regulated in GC tissues and cell lines, and associated with clinicopathologic features of GC patients. CircBANP knockdown repressed the proliferation, migration, invasion, and promoted the apoptosis in GC cells. CircBANP sequestered let-7a by acting as a molecular sponge of let-7a. Moreover, the regulatory effect of circBANP on GC cell progression in vitro was mediated by let-7a. CircBANP protected against FZD5 repression by sponging let-7a in GC cells. Wnt/ß-catenin signaling was involved in the regulatory network of the circBANP/let-7a axis in GC cell progression. Additionally, circBANP depletion retarded tumor growth in vivo. In conclusion, our study suggested that the knockdown of circBANP suppressed GC cell progression in vitro and in vivo at least partially through sponging let-7a and regulating FZD5/Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, providing a novel mechanism for understanding the pathogenesis of GC.

ABSTRACT

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is originated from the epithelial cells of nasopharynx, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated and has the highest incidence and mortality rates in Southeast Asia. Late presentation is a common issue and early detection could be the key to reduce the disease burden. Sensitivity of plasma EBV DNA, an established NPC biomarker, for Stage I NPC is controversial. Most newly reported NPC biomarkers have neither been externally validated nor compared to the established ones. This causes difficulty in planning for cost-effective early detection strategies. Our study systematically evaluated six established and four new biomarkers in NPC cases, population controls and hospital controls. We showed that BamHI-W 76 bp remains the most sensitive plasma biomarker, with 96.7% (29/30), 96.7% (58/60) and 97.4% (226/232) sensitivity to detect Stage I, early stage and all NPC, respectively. Its specificity was 94.2% (113/120) against population controls and 90.4% (113/125) against hospital controls. Diagnostic accuracy of BamHI-W 121 bp and ebv-miR-BART7-3p were validated. Hsa-miR-29a-3p and hsa-miR-103a-3p were not, possibly due to lower number of advanced stage NPC cases included in this subset. Decision tree modeling suggested that combination of BamHI-W 76 bp and VCA IgA or EA IgG may increase the specificity or sensitivity to detect NPC. EBNA1 99 bp could identify NPC patients with poor prognosis in early and advanced stage NPC. Our findings provided evidence for improvement in NPC screening strategies, covering considerations of opportunistic screening, combining biomarkers to increase sensitivity or specificity and testing biomarkers from single sampled specimen to avoid logistic problems of resampling.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) has been reported to dysregulate in many tumors. However, the mechanism of HOTAIR was rarely reported in GC. METHODS: The levels of HOTAIR, microRNA-618 (miR-618) and Krueppel-like factor 12 (KLF12) in GC tissues and cells were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The cell viability and apoptotic rate were assessed via cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The migrating and invading abilities were tested by Transwell assay. The protein levels of KLF12, p-PI3K, PI3K, p-ATK and ATK were measured by Western blot assay. These interactions between miR-618 and HOTAIR or KLF12 were predicted by DIANA tools, and then, dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay were conducted to validate these interactions. Besides, the xenograft tumor experiment was performed to further verify the roles of HOTAIR in GC. RESULTS: The levels of HOTAIR and KLF12 were significantly upregulated and the level of miR-618 was strikingly downregulated in GC tissues and cells. miR-618 was verified as a direct target of HOTAIR or KLF12. HOTAIR silencing blocked GC progression and PI3K/ATK signaling pathway by sponging miR-618 and also restrained xenograft tumor growth in vivo. miR-618 inhibited GC progression and PI3K/ATK signaling pathway by targeting KLF12. Mechanistically, HOTAIR modulated KLF12 expression by sponging miR-618 in GC cells. CONCLUSION: These data unraveled that HOTAIR promoted GC progression through PI3K/ATK signaling pathway via miR-618/KLF12 axis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of moxibustion pretreatment at different time on serum hormone levels in diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) rats, so as to explore its protective mechanisms. METHODS: Forty female SD rats were randomly divided into control, model, moxibustion-1 (moxibustion was given 4 weeks before modeling), moxibustion-2 (moxibustion was given 2 weeks before modeling and 2 weeks from the 1st day on after modeling ) and moxibustion-3 (moxibustion was given 4 weeks from the 1st day on after modeling) groups (n=8 rats in each group). The DOR model was established by gavage of Tripterygium Glycosides (75 mg/kg) once daily for 14 days. Grain-moxibustion was applied to "Shenshu" (BL23) and "Guanyuan" (CV4) for 7 cones, 5 times a week for 4 weeks. The body weight and the ovary weight were recorded for calculating the ovarian index. The levels of serum anti-mullerian hormone (AMH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), androgen (T) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were detected by ELISA. RESULTS: After modeling, ovarian index and serum AMH levels were obviously decreased (P<0.05), and the levels of serum FSH, E2, T and DHEA were significantly increased in contrast with the control group (P<0.05). Following intervention and compared with the model group, the serum FSH and DHEA levels of each moxibustion group were significantly reduced (P<0.05), the AMH levels significantly increased and E2 and T contents significantly decreased in the moxibustion-2 and moxibustion-3 groups (P<0.05). The serum FSH, E2 and T contents in moxibustion-2 group were obviously lower than those of the moxibustion-1 and moxibustion-3 groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion pre-treatment can improve ovarian reserve function in DOR rats, while the effect is different with different intervention time, and the best intervention time is pre-occurrence and early stage of DOR.

ABSTRACT

The analysis of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is attracting a lot of research attention in the medical informatics domain. Hospitals and medical institutes started to use data mining techniques to gain new insights from the massive amounts of data that can be made available through EHRs. Researchers in the medical field have often used descriptive statistics and classical statistical methods to prove assumed medical hypotheses. However, discovering new insights from large amounts of data solely based on experts' observations is difficult. Using data mining techniques and visualizations, practitioners can find hidden knowledge, identify interesting patterns, or formulate new hypotheses to be further investigated. This paper describes a work in progress on using data mining methods to analyze clinical data of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) cancer patients. NPC is the fifth most common cancer among Malaysians, and the data analyzed in this study was collected from three states in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak), and is considered to be the largest up-to-date dataset of its kind. This research is addressing the issue of cancer recurrence after the completion of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment. We describe the procedure, problems, and insights gained during the process.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the multiple symptom distribution, severity and quality of life of female pelvic floor dysfunction(FPFD) patients with constipation as chief complaint.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred FPFD patients with constipation as chief complaint from Speciaty Outpatient Clinic, Pelvic Floor Center of Nanjing Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between September 2015 and February 2017 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. A comprehensive medical history questionnaire survey and systematical evaluation of severity and quality of life of these patients with constipation was conducted. Constipation scoring system scale (CSS) and patient-assessment of constipation quality of life questionnaire (PAC-QOL) were applied to evaluate the constipation. Other scales included: (1)pain visual analogue scale (VAS) and short form-36 questionnaire (SF-36): if combined with chronic functional anal rectal pain; (2) international consultation on incontinence questionnaire-short form (ICIQ-SF) and urinary incontinence quality of life questionnaires (I-QOL):if combined with urinary incontinence; (3) fecal incontinence severity score scale (Wexner-FIS) and fecal incontinence quality of life questionnaire (FI-QOL):if combined with fecal incontinence.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The mean age of 100 FPFD patients was (57.9±13.9) (24-89) years and the mean disease course was (7.0±8.2)(0.5-40.0) years. Seventy-five cases (75%) were complicated with anal pain, 70 with urinary incontinence, 37 with rectocele, 19 with nocturia, 11 with urinary frequency, 10 with defecation incontinence. Complication with only one symptom was observed in 20 cases (20%), and with two or more symptoms was observed in 80 cases (80%). Pelvic floor relaxation syndrome patients were dominant (58 cases, 58%). The severity of constipation (CSS) was 6-22 (13.89±3.79) points and the quality of life (PAC-QOL) was 45-133 (87.13±18.57) points in FPFD patients. VAS and SF-36 of patients combined with chronic functional anal rectal pain were 1-8 (3.0±1.9) points and 14.4-137.0(71.5±31.4) points respectively. ICIQ-SF and I-QOL of patients combined with urinary incontinence were 1-17 (6.1±3.6) points and 52-110 (90.0±15.8) points respectively. Wexner-FIS and FI-QOL of patients combined with fecal incontinence were 1-11 (4.4±3.0) points and 52-116 (83.4±23.3) points respectively.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The symptoms of FPFD patients with constipation as chief complaint are complex. They are mainly complicated with anal diseases, then urinary incontinence, and mostly with more than 2 symptoms. Their quality of life is poor.</p>

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the needle insertion parameters of deep acupuncture at Baliao points for clinic and teaching. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 100 cases of prone pelvic CT from January to June 2016 in Nanjing Hospital was carried out. The 3 D images were scanned with continuous 5 mm slice thickness. The optimum needle angle is defined as the angle of the needle along the central axis of sacral anterior and posterior hole, and the angle between the needle body and the skin surface and the center line of the body was observed. The effect needle depth is defined as the thickness of the sacral back soft tissue plus 1/2 sacral depth, to observe the best needle angle of deep acupuncture parameters of Baliao points. RESULTS: For deep acupuncture at Baliao, the oblique thorn method should be used with the needle-point toward the inner bottom. The best insertion angle between needle body and skin surface is: Shangliao(BL 31) (61.04±12.15)°, Ciliao(BL 32) (57.57±10.01)°, Zhongliao(BL 33) (58.25±8.69)°, Xialiao(BL 34) (54.39±10.94)°. The optimum angle of insertion between the needle body and the posterior midline of the human body is: BL 31 (24.54±6.21)°, BL 32 (18.58±7.76)°, BL 33 (17.36±7.90)°, BL 34 (30.73±9.45)°. The effective insertion depth show a decreasing trend: BL 31 (58.16±12.43) mm, BL 32 (44.57±11.55) mm, BL 33 (33.96±10.74) mm, BL 34 (31.13±10.94) mm. The effective depth is positively correlated with BMI, and has no correlation with gender and weight. CONCLUSIONS: The study of the parameters of needle insertion should be taken into account both clinical efficacy and safety, and CT three-dimensional reconstruction can accurately, rationally and scientifically perform acupoint anatomical measurements.

ABSTRACT

Direct white-light (CIE coordinate of x = 0.333, y = 0.335, CCT of 5455 K and CRI of 82) with a high luminous efficiency (18.4%) was achieved in the first example of Eu(3+)-Gd(3+)-containing metallopolymer Poly(2-co-NVK-co-4), which also showed tunable purplish-blue to white to yellow-green photoluminescence.

ABSTRACT

Mitochondria have recently emerged as novel targets for cancer therapy due to its important roles in fundamental cellular function. Discovery of new chemotherapeutic agents that allow for simultaneous treatment and visualization of cancer is urgent. Herein, we demonstrate a novel bifunctional mitochondria-targeted anticancer agent (FPB), exhibiting both imaging capability and anticancer activity. It can selectively accumulate in mitochondria and induce cell apoptosis. Notably, it results in much higher toxicity toward cancer cells owing to much higher uptake by cancer cells. These features make it highly attractive in cancer imaging and treatment.

A new synthesis route for preparing Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM) based inorganic-organic hybrid materials is presented. Two new heteropolytungstate-based dimeric and oligomeric Pt(II) acetylide inorganic-organic hybrid compounds (2PtOD and PPtOD) were prepared by Hagihara's dehydrohalogenating coupling of a terminal diacetylene POM hybrid containing diphosphoryl functionality and an appropriate platinum(II) halide precursor. This method provides a rigid covalent linkage between the POM and the organometallic Pt(II) acetylide moiety. The redox potential of the polyanion can be tuned by grafting the organic and organometallic groups on it. The photoelectric properties of hybrid LB films derived from these inorganic-organic composites were studied.

ABSTRACT

Defibrillation is the most effective method of treating ventricular fibrillation(VF), this paper introduces wearable automatic external defibrillators based on embedded system which includes EGG measurements, bioelectrical impedance measurement, discharge defibrillation module, which can automatic identify VF signal, biphasic exponential waveform defibrillation discharge. After verified by animal tests, the device can realize EGG acquisition and automatic identification. After identifying the ventricular fibrillation signal, it can automatic defibrillate to abort ventricular fibrillation and to realize the cardiac electrical cardioversion.

ABSTRACT

Under the influence of Chinese medicine scientization, Chengjiang Acupuncture School, which was originated in the Republic of China (1912 - 1949), has also undergone a series of scientific practice. The Chengjiang School established scientific research, education and medical organizations such as the Research Society of China Acupuncture-Moxibustion, China Acupuncture-Moxibustion School, Training School of China Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Sanatorium of Acupuncture-Moxibustion. Zhenjiu Zazhi (Journal of Acupuncture-Moxibustion) was established, and monographs and textbooks such as Zhongguo Zhenjiu Zhiliaoxue (Therapeutics of Chinese Acupuncture-Moxibustion) and Zhongguo Zhenjiuxue Jiangyi (Lectures on Chinese Acupuncture-Moxibustion) were published. Meanwhile, based on clinical practice, large members of acupuncture personnel with scientific literacy emerged. Therefore, it is held that the scientization of Chengjiang School has performed a profound influence on the development of modern acupuncture-moxibustion.

ABSTRACT

The rapid atrial pacing model is one of the most popular atrial fibrillation animal models. In this paper, a novel implementation of wireless implantable stimulating and ECG monitoring system is described based on the requirements of rapid atrial pacing model. Hardware circuits and software structure of the system are introduced. And test outcomes through in-vitro simulation and in-vivo animal models are presented. After verified by animal tests, the system can be used to initiate and monitor chronic atrial fibriation in real time.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we described an ultra-low power, wearable ECG system capable of long term monitoring and mass storage. This system is based on micro-chip PIC18F27J13 with consideration of its high level of integration and low power consumption. The communication with the micro-SD card is achieved through SPI bus. Through the USB, it can be connected to the computer for replay and disease diagnosis. Given its low power cost, lithium cells are used to support continuous ECG acquiring and storage for up to 15 days. Meanwhile, the wearable electrodes avoid the pains and possible risks in implanting. Besides, the mini size of the system makes long wearing possible for patients and meets the needs of long-term dynamic monitoring and mass storage requirements.

ABSTRACT

A series of cationic lanthanide porphyrinate complexes of the general formula [(Por)Ln(H(2)O)(3)](+) (Ln(3+)=Yb(3+) and Er(3+)) were synthesized in moderate yields through the interaction of meso-pyridyl-substituted porphyrin free bases (H(2)Por) with [Ln{N(SiMe(3))(2)}(3)]·x[LiCl(thf)(3)], and the corresponding neutral derivatives [(Por)Ln(L(OMe))] (L(OMe)(-)=[(η(5)-C(5)H(5))Co{P(=O)(OMe)(2)}(3)](-)) were also prepared from [(Por)Ln(H(2)O)(3)](+) by the addition of the tripodal anion, L(OMe)(-), an effective encapsulating agent for lanthanide ions. Furthermore, the water-soluble lanthanide(III) porphyrinate complexes--including [(cis-DMPyDPP)Yb(H(2)O)(3)]Cl(3) (cis-DMPyDPP=5,10-bis(N-methylpyridinium-4'-y1)-15,20-di(phenyl)porphyrin), [(trans-DMPyDPP)Yb(H(2)O)(3)]Cl(3) (trans-DMPyDPP=5,15-bis(N-methylpyridinium-4'-y1)-10,20-di(phenyl)porphyrin), [(TMPyP)Yb(L(OMe))]I(4), and [(TMPyP)Er(L(OMe))]I(4) (TMPyP=tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-y1)porphyrin)--were obtained by methylation of the corresponding complexes with methyl iodide and unambiguously characterized. The binding interactions and photocleavage activities of the water-soluble lanthanide(III) porphyrinate complexes towards DNA were investigated by UV-visible, fluorescence, and near-infrared luminescence spectroscopy, as well as circular dichroism and gel electrophoresis.
