ABSTRACT

The biodiversity of grasslands is important for ecosystem function and health. The protection and mana-gement of grassland biodiversity requires the collection of the information on plant diversity. Hyperspectral remote sensing, with its unique advantages of extensive coverage and high spectral resolution, offers a new solution for long-term monitoring of plant diversity. We first reviewed the development history of hyperspectral remote sensing technology, emphasized its advantages in monitoring grassland plant diversity, and further analyzed its specific applications in this field. Finally, we discussed the challenges faced by hyperspectral remote sensing technology in its applications, such as the complexity of data processing, accuracy of algorithms, and integration with ground-based remote sensing data, and proposes prospects for future research directions. With the advancement of remote sensing technology and the integrated application of multi-source data, hyperspectral remote sensing would play an increasingly important role in grassland ecological monitoring and biodiversity conservation, which could provide scientific basis and technical support for global ecological protection and sustainable development.

ABSTRACT

Self-powered deep ultraviolet photodetectors (DUV PDs) are essential in environmental monitoring, flame detection, missile guidance, aerospace, and other fields. A heterojunction photodetector based on p-CuI/n-ZnGa2O4 has been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition combined with vacuum thermal evaporation. Under 260 nm DUV light irradiation, the photodetector exhibits apparent self-powered performance with a maximum responsivity and specific detectivity of 2.75 mA/W and 1.10 × 1011 Jones at 0 V. The photodetector exhibits high repeatability and stability under 260 nm periodic illumination. The response and recovery time are 205 ms and 133 ms, respectively. This work provides an effective strategy for fabricating high-performance self-powered DUV photodetectors.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To evaluate the comparation of myocutaneous flap vs. skin flap in V-Y medial epicanthal fold reconstruction. Methods: The study, conducted from April 2017 to June 2022, involved two groups: group A, comprising 21 patients who underwent medial epicanthal fold restoration surgery using the V-Y advancement method with a skin flap, and group B, comprising 83 patients who underwent the same procedure, while with a myocutaneous flap for orbicularis oculi ring reconstruction. Intercanthal distances were measured preoperatively, recorded during preoperative and postoperative reviews, and assessed through a 4-point Likert satisfaction questionnaire. Results: A total of 104 patients were followed up for 6 months postoperatively. In group A, preoperative intercanthal distances ranged from 28.7 mm to 38.2 mm, increasing to 30.2 mm-40.6 mm postoperatively, with a mean increase of 3.0 mm (P < 0.05). In group B, preoperative distances ranged from 28.8 mm to 38.0 mm, increasing to 32.2 mm-41.5 mm postoperatively, with a mean increase of 3.9 mm (P < 0.05). Group B exhibited a higher overall satisfaction rate compared to group A. Conclusion: The myocutaneous flap V-Y procedure, employing the principle of orbicularis oculi ring reconstruction, achieves more stable postoperative results than the flap-only V-Y procedure. Consequently, it can be regarded as the preferred surgical technique.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: High crease correction is difficult to achieve in secondary blepharoplasty. Currently, patients tend to have more precise requirements for crease-lowering procedures, such as low in-fold or low out-fold creases. For the out-fold crease, the height of the central crease is similar with the height of the medial crease, whereas for the in-fold crease, the height of the medial crease is lower than the height of the central crease. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the authors developed a strategy to create low in-fold or out-fold creases to satisfy patients' individualized requirements. METHODS: The medical records of patients who received crease-lowering secondary blepharoplasty from January 2015 to January 2021 were reviewed. The results were grouped by preoperative condition (high in-fold/out-fold) and patients' expectations for postoperative outcome (low in-fold/out-fold). Preoperative and postoperative images were collected, and patient satisfaction, complications and revisions were evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 297 consecutive patients were included in this study with an average follow-up duration of 12.3 months. Eighteen patients had high in-fold creases, and 279 patients had high out-fold creases. Regarding patients with high out-folds, 233 patients wanted to have low out-folds, and 46 patients wanted to have low in-folds. Two hundred and sixty-six (89.6%) patients were satisfied with their results. Complications included complete crease loss (n = 3, 1.0%), partial crease loss (n = 5, 1.7%), multiple creases (n = 6, 2.0%), asymmetric creases (n = 7, 2.4%), and upper eyelid skin laxity (n = 10, 3.4%). CONCLUSIONS: This flexible, novel technique for customizing low out-fold or in-fold creases is reliable in high double-eyelid crease correction based on preoperative upper eyelid skin tightness, scar positions, and the patient's expected double-eyelid crease shape. ABSTRACT

Nanocelluloses (NCs)-based aerogels have gradually attracted attention due to their excellent performance in oil recovery for mitigating environmental pollution caused by oil spillages. However, hydrophobicity due to polyhydroxy groups and fragile in water, as well as a complicated fabricating process, significantly restrict their practical applications. Herein, a facile route is reported to fabricate superelastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)@NCs aerogels through a Pickering emulsion strategy. The hierarchical PDMS@NCs aerogels exhibit function-dependent porous structures and integrated properties of hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, stemming from the synergistic effect of the hydrophobic skin layer and porous matrix. The resulting aerogels are capable of continuous oil/water filtration by adsorption-extrusion with a flux up to 4300 L m-2 h-1 and a separation efficiency of 99.9%. Therefore, this provides a new route for the rational design of morphology-tunable NCs-based aerogels and affords a reference for its practical application in durable oil/water separation.

ABSTRACT

Ferroptosis and pyroptosis are two new programmed cell death (PCD) modes discovered in recent years. However, the potential value of ferroptosis and pyroptosis-related genes (FPRGs) in prognosis prediction and the tumor immune microenvironment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is still unclear. We obtained 21 significant FPRGs based on the training dataset (TCGA- HNSC) using the univariate Cox and differential expression analysis. The TCGA- HNSC (n = 502) dataset was clustered into two group (clusters A and B) based on the 21 significant FPRGs. 1467 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between cluster A and B were put into univariate Cox and Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis to build a risk model. The predictive capability of the risk model was successfully confirmed by internal validation, external validation, and clinical sample validation. To improve the clinical applicability, a nomogram model combined risk score and clinical information were constructed. Moreover, the patients with lower risk score were characterized by increased immune response and tumor mutation burden (TMB), while the patients with higher risk score were characterized by increased TP53 mutation rate. In conclusion, our comprehensive analysis of the FPRGs revealed their significant role in prognosis prediction and the tumor immune microenvironment. The risk model containing 9 FPRGs could be a potential prognostic markers and effective immunotherapy targets for HNSCC.

ABSTRACT

Double-eyelid surgery is a very common practice in East Asian patients. The differential distribution of pretarsal tissue layers is considered to be the anatomical mechanism of natural Asiatic single eyelid, it is possible to form double-eyelid crease by re-positioning the pretarsal structure layers. The author presents a new double-eyelid surgery based on re-positioning of the pretarsal structure layers without tissue removal. Over a 6-year period, 1440 patients underwent new double-eyelid surgeries. With the pretarsal orbicularis oculi muscle incised, the pre-pretarsal levator aponeurosis fascia fibroadipose was first dissected to form a fibroadipose flap, and then repositioned with the eyelid lower lip orbicularis oculi muscle flap. The new composite structure was anchored at 3 points on the pretarsal levator aponeurosis fascia; the skin was sutured to form a smooth crease. Post-operative outcome and follow-up data were analyzed. Patients were followed up for an average of 2 years. esthetic outcomes were satisfactory for 97.91% of patients, who enjoyed new double upper eyelids with smooth creases and invisible incision lines. Outcomes were unsatisfactory for 2.08% of patients (double-eyelid regression, 0.76%; asymmetric creases, 1.32%). All patients who were not satisfied with their esthetic outcomes underwent second correction surgery. This new Pan-flap technique focuses on the correct dissection and repositioning of differentially thickened pre-pretarsal levator aponeurosis fascia fibroadipose tissue in East Asian patients. This new technique can generate broader and tighter attachment between pretarsal orbicularis oculi muscle and levator aponeurosis fascia, and form smooth double-eyelid crease without pretarsal soft tissue removal.

ABSTRACT

CDGSH iron sulfur domain 2 (Cisd2) is known as a key determinant factor in maintaining cellular homeostasis. However, whether Cisd2 contributes to the mediation of neuronal injury during ischemic stroke has not been well stressed. This work focuses on investigating the role of Cisd2 in regulating neuronal injury caused by oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R). The dramatic down-regulation of Cisd2 was observed in hippocampal neurons suffering from OGD/R injury. In Cisd2-overexpressed neurons, OGD/R-induced neuronal apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation were prominently mitigated. Further investigation uncovered that the forced expression of Cisd2 reinforced the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway in OGD/R-exposed neurons. Moreover, the overexpression of Cisd2 enhanced Akt activation, and the restraint of Akt abolished Cisd2-induced Nrf2 activation. Importantly, restraint of Nrf2 reversed Cisd2-conferred neuroprotective effects in OGD/R-exposed neurons. Taken together, our findings indicate that Cisd2 is able to protect neurons from OGD/R-induced injuries by strengthening Nrf2 activation via Akt. Our work identifies Cisd2 as a potential determinant factor for neuronal injury during cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Double eyelid blepharoplasty is a popular procedure among Asian population. Double eyelid shape is important to achieving high satisfaction rate. Currently, there lacks large sample survey and detailed analysis on preferred double eyelid shape. This study aims to investigate the double eyelid shape preference using the "in-fold," "on-fold," and "out-fold" classification and analyze the preferred shape of different demographic groups. METHODS: A large sample survey was conducted with a questionnaire of nine questions in three sections: demographic characteristics, desired double eyelid shape, and assessment of the classification. The preference for each type of double eyelid shape was analyzed and compared among different groups. RESULTS: A total of 11153 (9698 female and 1455 male) respondents finished the questionnaire, including 382 plastic surgeons. In-fold double eyelid was the most popular choice overall. Out-fold was the least preferred, except for specific groups such as actors and heavy makeup wearers. No significant difference was observed between the preference of patients and plastic surgeons. The majority of respondents cared much about postoperative double eyelid shape and considered the classification useful. CONCLUSIONS: In-fold was the most preferred double eyelid shape, especially for patients who met one or more of the following criteria: male, older than 40, divorced, or housewives. However, heavy makeup wearers or actors/actresses tend to prefer out-fold double eyelids. The "in-fold," "on-fold," and "out-fold" classification was precise and beneficial to doctor-patient communication. ABSTRACT

A facile synthetic method to form cage-annulated crown ether with anchored imidazolium units was developed. The present work verified the potential application of the metal-carbene template approach (MCTA) in the preparation of novel flexible polyimidazolium cages by photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reactions and may provide a new method for the preparation of flexible pure organic cages with incorporation of a variety of functional sites.

ABSTRACT

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) one of the most prevalent and severe malignancies globally and the molecular mechanisms of NSCLC are poor understood, limiting the development of diagnostic biomarkers and targeted therapies. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been identified as a sort of critical regulator in cancer progression. In this study, we identities the epigenetic regulation function of circular RNA circRHOT1 in promoting NSCLC cell proliferation. We found that circRHOT1 were elevated in the clinical tumor tissues relative to that in the peritumor tissues from NSCLC patients. circRHOT1 was up-regulated in human lung cancer cell lines compared with normal human lung epithelial cell line. MTT assays revealed that the silencing of circRHOT1 by siRNA suppressed cell viabilities of NSCLC cells. Colony formation and Edu assays confirmed that circRHOT1 knockdown attenuated NSCLC cell proliferation in vitro. Meanwhile, the depletion of circRHOT1 induced NSCLC cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in vitro. Mechanically, the depletion of circRHOT1 remarkably reduced c-MYC mRNA and protein expression in NSCLC cells. Inhibition of circRHOT1 reduced the enrichment of transcription active marker histone H3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac) and RNA polymerase II on the promoter of c-MYC. RNA pull down analysis showed that circRHOT1 was able to directly interact with acetyltransferase KAT5 in NSCLC cells. In summary, we concluded that circRHOT1 contributed to pathogenesis of NSCLC by epigenetically enhancing c-MYC expression through recruiting KAT5. CircRHOT1 and KAT5 may be used as the potential targets for NSCLC therapy.

ABSTRACT

Dipeptidyl-peptidase 3 (DPP3) plays a key role in regulating apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation under various pathological conditions, however, whether DPP3 regulates apoptosis and oxidative stress in neurons undergoing cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury has not yet been well studied. The goals of this work were to evaluate the role of DPP3 in the regulation of oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation in HT22 hippocampal neurons. Here, we showed that DPP3 expression was elevated in response to OGD/R in neurons. Knockdown of DPP3 exacerbated OGD/R-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation, whilst up-regulation of DPP3 alleviated OGD/R-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation in HT22 neurons. Further results revealed that DPP3 enhanced the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and promoted transcriptional activity of the anti-oxidant response element (ARE). Additionally, DPP3 was shown to regulate Nrf2/ARE activation in a kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)-dependent manner. Notably, inhibition of Nrf2 markedly reversed the DPP3-mediated neuroprotective effects against OGD/R injury. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that DPP3 exerts a neuroprotective role in OGD/R-injured neurons by suppressing neuronal apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation via modulation of Keap1/Nrf2 signaling. This work suggests DPP3 as a potential target for providing neuroprotective effects during cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

ABSTRACT

The cross-river subway in the Hangzhou Bay area often passes through deep, thick, soft soil at the bottom of the river. At the same time, overlying erosion, siltation, and changes in water levels adversely affect the deformation of the subway, thereby causing hidden dangers to its safe operation. Using two-way dynamic triaxial testing, the effects of cyclic loading of the cross-river subway on the soft clay foundation were investigated for the first time, using simulation methodology as the prime objective of the present study. A strain development curve for the soft clay was obtained as a result. Considering the effects of effective confining pressure (p') and radial cyclic stress ratio (τr), an explicit model of accumulative strain on soft clay under cyclic loading of the cross-river subway was established. The results showed that the accumulative axial strain (εd) was closely related to p' and τr. Under certain conditions, as p' and τr increased, the εd produced by the soil tended to decrease. Furthermore, through non-destructive testing based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), pore distribution and pore size changes in soft clay during cyclic loading were analyzed. It was observed that under the action of the cross-river loading, the large internal soft clay pores were transformed into small pores, which manifested as a significant decrease in the number of large pores and an increase in the proportion of small pores. Lastly, the macroscopic dynamic soil characteristics observed during triaxial testing closely correlated with the microscopic pore size of the soil obtained in the NMR test, which indicated that using pore distribution and pore size changes to describe microscopic changes was a valid method.

ABSTRACT

Thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena, improved stabilities, and the good selectivity and sensitivity of the chemical responses exhibited by the products, coordination-driven self-assembly with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units has recently received much attention and has been widely investigated for application in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, and others. Several reviews have emerged on the topics of AIE chemistry and aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based supramolecular assembles, however, there is still a distinct lack of full overviews of emission enhancement from the viewpoint of metal-coordination effects. Thus, this minireview offers recent advances that have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).

ABSTRACT

Tripartite motif 16 (TRIM16) has emerged as a novel oxidative stress-responsive protein that confers cytoprotective effects by reinforcing the cellular antioxidant system. However, whether TRIM16 is involved in regulating oxidative stress during cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury remains unclear. In the present study, we aimed to explore the potential function and molecular mechanism of TRIM16 in regulating oxidative stress in neurons induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) in vitro. Here, we found that OGD/R exposure resulted in a significant induction of TRIM16 expression in neurons. Depletion of TRIM16 by siRNA-mediated gene knockdown markedly upregulated the sensitivity of neurons to OGD/R-induced apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Notably, upregulation of TRIM16 expression significantly alleviated OGD/R-induced apoptosis and ROS generation in neurons. Moreover, TRIM16 overexpression markedly increased nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expression and enhanced Nrf2/antioxidant response element (ARE) activation associated with downregulation of kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) expression. Restoration of Keap1 significantly reversed the TRIM16-mediated promotion effect on Nrf2/ARE activation. In addition, knockdown of Nrf2 also markedly abrogated the TRIM16-conferred neuroprotective effect in OGD/R-exposed neurons. Taken together, our results of our study demonstrate that induction of TRIM16 confers a cytoprotective effect in OGD/R-exposed neurons through enhancement of Nrf2/ARE antioxidant signaling via downregulation of Keap1. These findings suggest that TRIM16 may play a critical role in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and serve as a promising target for neuroprotection.

ABSTRACT

Conventional levator aponeurosis plication is a widely accepted technique for correction of mild to moderate ptosis. However, this method is associated with a high recurrence rate. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical efficacy of levator aponeurosis posterior layer plication technique for correction of mild to moderate ptosis.A convenience sampling approach was used to recruit 450 patients with mild to moderate blepharoptosis at the Guangzhou Eye-Nose-Face Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Hospital between August, 2015 and December, 2017. All participants were treated with levator aponeurosis posterior layer plication technique. The primary outcome was the postoperative change in marginal reflex distance 1 (MRD1). The paired t test was used to determine the clinical efficacy. Outcomes were assessed at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery. The mean preoperative MRD1 was 1.7 ±â€Š0.5 mm, and the mean postoperative MRD1 at 6-month follow-up was 3.7 ±â€Š0.4 mm (P < .0001). According to the postoperative survey, 427 (94.9%) patients were satisfied with surgical outcomes. This modified levator aponeurosis plication technique is a simple and effective procedure for correction of mild to moderate blepharoptosis. It results in good MRD1 and high patient satisfaction.
