ABSTRACT

An optimum treatment system for the waste electronic home appliance in remote area by local pre-processing and outsourcing post-processing is proposed. The cost reduction potential of the proposed treatment system is presented for main four types of electronic home appliances by the case study of Kinmen, Taiwan. Implementation of local pre-processing in Kinmen, Taiwan can provide 42, 54, 32, and 41 TWD unit cost reduction for television, washing machine, refrigerator, and air conditioner, respectively, comparing to the current treatment system. The different treatment characteristics according to the type of the appliances are the major factors for the applicability and cost reduction potential of the local pre-processing system. The application of this system to other cases is presented by sensitivity analysis with relative labor cost and transportation distance as the parameters. The results and the analysis process can be applied to the domestic systems with regions without recycling facilities, and also the international systems under the extended producer responsibility concept to take back the products for recycling.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to prepare CuO-CeO2 composite by means of mechanical milling and to investigate its characteristics as a catalyst. The structural and morphological features of milled samples are observed by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The redox property and total OSC (oxygen storage capacity) of the milled sample were measured by using GC-TCD and TG-DTA, which are important parameters to indicate the effectiveness of catalysts. Interestingly, reduction of CuO is repeatedly observed when milling of CuO-CeO2 powder mixture is processed in air. The redox property of milled CuO-CeO2 sample is investigated by H2-TPR, where three reduction peaks are observed for 0 h milling and only one broad peak for various other milling times. The total OSC of mechanically driven CuO-CeO2 catalyst is much higher than that of the CeO2-ZrO2 traditional catalyst system at low temperatures.

ABSTRACT

In view of the increasing demand for metal use, it is of significant importance to evaluate the environmental impact of metal production. The global warming potential (GWP) in the process of metal production has often been focused upon as a major indicator for evaluating the burden on the environment. Moreover, the environmental impact and mineral exploitation arising from metal ore mining activities, which generate unavoidable mine wastes and have an impact on the ecological biodiversity, cannot be ignored. The major factors for determining the intensity of resource exploitation being the ore grades and strip ratio, the existing indicators for land use employed in the life cycle assessment (LCA) may not fully cover the criteria of the impact of metal mining on the environmental system. Therefore, this study employs the method of total material requirement (TMR) assessment, involving not only the direct and indirect material inputs but also the hidden flows, which are particularly associated with mine wastes. Firstly, the methodology of computing the TMR in the process of metal production is developed. Next, the relation between the GWP and TMR for 58 metals is assessed and finally, the environmental impact through metal substitutes is evaluated from the perspectives of the GWP and TMR. This analysis could identify some of the aspects overlooked in the previous environmental criteria that were concentrating on greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. The developed algorithm may be useful in identifying appropriate metal substitutes, considering the environmental impact.

ABSTRACT

This article will outline the historical transition in the flow of phosphorus in steelmaking technology, and examine the current and future phosphorus flow in steel production and the peripheral steelmaking processes. History provides many instances of innovative changes in steelmaking processes driven by various issues associated with raw materials which emerged over time, such as supply, quality and cost issues. The major steel countries with a long history, including Sweden and Japan, have shown flexibility in their ability to adapt to the changes in the value of resources and geopolitical conditions over times, and have enacted survival resource utilization measures over many centuries, leading to improvements in their respective steelmaking processes. Considering these success stories, it stands to reason that the ideal state of steelmaking is one with a clear stance with regard to resource policy.

ABSTRACT

In the current recycling system of end-of-life (EoL) appliances, which is based on shredding, alloying elements tend to end up in the scrap of base metals. The uncontrolled mixing of alloying elements contaminates secondary metals and calls for dilution with primary metals. Active disassembling fastener (ADF) is a design for disassembly (DfD) technology that is expected to solve this problem by significantly reducing the extent of mixing. This paper deals with a life cycle assessment (LCA) based on the waste input-output (WIO) model of an ADF developed using hydrogen storage alloys. Special attention is paid to the issue of dilution of mixed iron scrap using pig iron in an electric arc furnace (EAF). The results for Japanese electrical and electronic appliances indicate superiority of the recycling system based on the ADF over the current system in terms of reduced emissions of CO(2). The superiority of ADF was found to increase with an increase in the requirement for dilution of scrap.
