ABSTRACT

Background: Current literature extensively covers the use of sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation (SPGs) in treating a broad spectrum of medical conditions, such as allergic rhinitis, cluster headaches, and strokes. Nevertheless, a discernible gap in the systematic organization and analysis of these studies is evident. This paper aims to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive review and analysis of existing literature on SPGs across various medical conditions. Methods: This study meticulously constructed a comprehensive database through systematic computerized searches conducted on PubMed, Embase, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and CBM up to May 2022. The inclusion criteria encompassed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in either Chinese or English, focusing on the therapeutic applications of SPGs for various medical conditions. Both qualitative and quantitative outcome indicators were considered eligible for inclusion. Results: This comprehensive study reviewed 36 publications, comprising 10 high-quality, 23 medium-quality, and three low-quality articles. The study investigated various diseases, including allergic rhinitis (AR), ischemic strokes (IS), cluster headache (CH), primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN), pediatric chronic secretory otitis (PCSO), refractory facial paralysis (RFP), chronic tension-type headache (CTTH), as well as the analysis of low-frequency sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation (LF-SPGs) in chronic cluster headache (CCH) and the impact of SPGs on Normal nasal cavity function (NNCF). SPGs demonstrate efficacy in the treatment of AR. Regarding the improvement of rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) scores, SPGs are considered the optimal intervention according to the SUCRA ranking. Concerning the improvement in Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS), Conventional Acupuncture Combined with Tradiational Chinese Medicine (CA-TCM) holds a significant advantage in the SUCRA ranking and is deemed the best intervention. In terms of increasing Effective Rate (ER), SPGs outperformed both conventional acupuncture (CA) and Western Medicine (WM; P < 0.05). In the context of SPGs treatment for IS, the results indicate a significant improvement in the 3-month outcomes, as evaluated by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) in the context of Cerebral Cortical Infarction (CCI; P < 0.05). In the treatment of CH with SPGs, the treatment has been shown to have a statistically significant effect on the relief and disappearance of headaches (P < 0.05). The impact of SPGs on NNCF reveals statistically significant improvements (P < 0.05) in nasal airway resistance (NAR), nasal cavity volume (NCV), exhaled nitric oxide (eNO), substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY). SPGs treatments for PCSO, RFP, and CTTH, when compared to control groups, yielded statistically significant results (P < 0.05). Conclusion: SPGs demonstrate significant effectiveness in the treatment of AR, IS, and CH. Effective management of CCH may require addressing both autonomic dysregulation and deeper neural pathways. However, additional high-quality research is essential to clarify its effects on NNCF, PTN, PCSO, RFP, and CTTH. ABSTRACT

AIM: To compare endovascular coiling and surgical clipping for the evaluation of clinical outcomes in patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and three Chinese domestic electronic databases, namely, Wanfang, CNKI and VIP for studies published between January 1990 and January 2018. We included controlled clinical studies comparing clinical outcomes between surgical clipping and endovascular coiling treatments. Two researchers extracted the data and assessed the quality of the studies, and a meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5 software. RESULTS: We analysed a total of 23 controlled clinical studies including 117,796 cases. Meta-analysis demonstrated similar ischaemia rates between clipping and coiling with an odds ratio [OR] of 1.36 (95% CI: 0.77?2.40). The occlusion rate and bleeding risk were higher with clipping than coiling; the pooled ORs were 5.31 (95% CI: 3.07?9.19) and 2.39 (95% CI: 1.82?3.13), respectively. In addition, clipping resulted in a longer hospital stay (OR = 2.90, 95% CI: 2.14?3.65) than coiling did. Patients who underwent clipping had a higher short-term mortality (OR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.70?2.33) and neurological deficit rate (OR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.73? 2.44) compared with those who underwent coiling. However, 1 year mortality and deficit rate were similar for both clipping and coiling, with pooled ORs of 0.75 (95% CI: 0.41?1.38) and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.53?1.67), respectively. Funnel plots did not demonstrate a publication bias, with the exception of ischaemic outcome, and sensitivity analysis showed consistent results. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that coiling is associated with a lower rate of occlusion, shorter hospital stay, lower bleeding risk and lower short-term mortality and morbidity compared with clipping. In terms of ischaemic risk, 1 year mortality and morbidity, coiling and clipping bear a similar risk. In addition, we speculate that surgical clipping may have a better outcome than endovascular coiling in the long term especially in young patients. Further research is needed to confirm our conclusion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of Guasha on inflammation factors, apoptosis and autophagy in the cartilage tissue of knee joint in rats with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), so as to explore its mechanisms underlying improvement of KOA. METHODS: A total of 51 male SD rats were randomized into three groups:blank control, KOA model and Guasha (n= 17 in each group) . The rats in the blank control group received intra-articular injection of 0.9% NaCl solution in the right knee joint. The KOA model was established by intraarticular injection of glutamate sodium iodoacetic acid in the right knee joint. For rats of the Guasha group, Guasha (at a frequency of 1 time/s, and an applied pressure of 0.3-0.5 kgf) was applied to "Yanglingquan" (GB34) and "Xuehai"(SP10) areas of the right leg, once every other day, for 7 consecutive sessions. The circumference of the right knee was measured, The histopathological changes of right knee cartilage were observed after H.E. staining. The contents of inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-1ß and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the right knee articular cartilage tissue were assayed using ELISA. The expression levels of autophagy-related key molecule Beclin-1 (homologous series of yeast Atg6), light chain protease complication 3 type II/I (LC3II/LC3 I), ubiquitin binding factor 62 (P62) and cysteine aspartate protease-3 (Caspase-3) mRNAs and proteins of the right knee articular cartilage tissue were measured using real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR and Western blot, separately. The apoptosis of chondrocytes was assayed using TUNEL staining, and the immunoactivity of LC3 determined using immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: After modeling, the right knee circumfe-rence of the model and Guasha groups was significantly increased compared with the blank control group (P<0.01), and after the intervention, the knee circumference of the Guasha group was markedly decreased in comparison with that of the model group (P<0.05). Results of H.E. staining showed obvious degeneration and defects in the cartilage tissue, necrosis of a large number of chondrocytes, fibrous hyperplasia, accompanied by inflammatory cell infiltration, osteoclast increase, fibroplasia and bone trabecular destruction in the model group, which was relatively milder in the Guasha group. Compared with the blank control group, the expression of Beclin-1 and LC3 mRNAs and proteins, and LC immunofluorescence intensity in the right knee articular cartilage tissue were significantly down-regulated (P<0.01, P<0.001), whereas the expression of P62 and Caspase-3 mRNAs and proteins, the apoptosis rate, contents of IL-1ß and TNF-α in the right knee articular cartilage tissue considerably increased (P<0.01, P<0.001) in the model group. In contrast to the model group, the Guasha group had an apparent increase in the expression levels of Beclin-1 and LC3 mRNAs and proteins and LC immunofluorescence intensity in the right knee articular cartilage tissue (P<0.05), and a pronounced decrease in the expression of P62 and Caspase-3 mRNAs and proteins, the apoptosis rate, and contents of IL-1ß and TNF-α in the right knee articular cartilage tissue (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Guasha stimulation of GB34 and SP10 can improve joint cartilage damage in KOA rats, which may be associated with its functions in inhibiting the excessive release of inflammatory factors and apoptosis, possibly by down-regulating the expression of P62 and Caspase-3 mRNAs and proteins and up-regulating the expression of Beclin-1 and LC3 mRNAs and proteins, and by promoting autophagy of chondrocytes.

ABSTRACT

Two physical models were used to simulate the infiltration and redistribution process of light crude oil after leakage in a heterogeneous soil layer following water level variation and rainfall. Migration fronts and redistribution characteristics of oil during gravity seepage, water level variation, and rainfall were obtained using charge-coupled device (CCD) camera shooting and cyan-magenta-yellow‒black (CMYK)-based gray analysis, which were employed efficiently and at a low cost. Then, the influencing factors and migration mechanisms were examined. Finally, the soil water and oil contents were measured to verify the simulation results. The results are as follows: (1) the geologic lens and fine-coarse interface can intercept oil, resulting in a local highly contaminated area. (2) The crude oil infiltration path and velocity varied greatly with the different soil types and initial water contents. Within a certain range, the higher the initial water content is, the higher the lateral and vertical infiltration speeds. (3) The oil redistribution process was dominated by vertical infiltration under the condition of water level variation or rainfall, but oil-water displacement and the capillary pressure caused some oil to move horizontally near the geologic lens and fine-coarse interface. (4) Water level variation resulted in a synchronous rise or fall of the oil accumulation area, but rainfall caused it to move up. (5) Water level variation and rainfall imposed a certain influence on the periodic accumulation and release of crude oil in heterogeneous soil, especially in the presence of geologic lenses and lithologic interfaces.

ABSTRACT

A series of Ru-Sn/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by the immersion method for tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dione (TMCB) hydrogenation to prepare 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO). The effect of the preparation method and reaction technology on TMCB hydrogenation activity was discussed. The catalysts were analyzed by means of XRD, BET, H2-TPR, XPS, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and it was found that the synthesized Ru was distributed on the surface of the carrier in the form of nanoparticles, showing a good catalytic effect. The results showed that when Ru loading was fixed at 5%, Sn was used as an auxiliary agent, and Ru/Sn = 1 : 1 as the catalyst, the reaction conditions were 120 °C, 4 MPa, and 1 h, and the catalytic hydrogenation effect of TMCB on CBDO was the best. The selectivity was as high as 73.5%, and the cis-trans ratio was 1.11. It may be the strong interaction between Ru and Sn under this ratio condition, which leads to the largest number of nano-active centers of elemental Ru. Finally, the reaction mechanism of TMCB hydrogenation to CBDO is discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the efficacy of acupuncture for the treatment of tobacco withdrawal syndrome. METHODS: The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding acupuncture for treatment of tobacco withdrawal syndrome were searched in CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, Cochrane, Medline and EMbase databases. The search period was from January 1st of 2011 to December 31st of 2021. After data extraction and bias risk assessment of the included literature, the Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4.1 software. RESULTS: Totally 23 RCTs were included, including 2 120 patients. The Meta-analysis results showed that compared with medication, acupuncture showed no significant difference at improving Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND) score (MD=0.16, 95%CI: -0.08, 0.41), heaviness of smoking index (HSI) score (MD=0.11, 95%CI: -0.13, 0.36), Minnesota nicotine withdrawal scale (MNWS) score (MD=0.12, 95%CI: -0.11, 1.35), questionnaire of smoking urges (QSU) score (MD=-0.30, 95%CI: -2.78, 2.18), Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score (MD=0.76, 95%CI: -1.54, 3.06), abstinence rate (RR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.82, 1.10) and effective rate (RR=1.01, 95%CI: 0.95, 1.07). Acupuncture was superior to sham acupuncture in reducing MNWS score (MD=-4.88, 95%CI: -5.21, -4.55, P<0.000 01). Acupuncture was superior to cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing FTND score (MD=-1.41, 95%CI: -1.74, -1.08), MNWS score (MD=-4.28, 95%CI: -5.31, -3.25) and increasing abstinence rate (RR=2.19, 95%CI: 1.39, 3.45, P<0.000 01, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture could effectively improve tobacco withdrawal syndrome, increase abstinence rate and effective rate. Limited by the quantity and quality of the included studies, this conclusion needs to be verified by more studies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of moxibustion and scraping of "Yanglingquan" (GB34) and "Xuehai" (SP10) area on changes of bioactive substances in the region of acupoints in rats with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into blank, model, moxibustion, scraping, and moxibustion + scraping (combination) groups, with 8 rats in each group. The KOA model was established by injecting 50 µL 0.9% sodium chloride solution into the right knee cavity. Fourteen days after modeling, GB34 and SP10 on the right limb were stimulated by moxibustion (10 min) or scraping (till regional flush) once every other day for 7 times. The mechanical paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) and thermal withdrawal latency (TWL) were tested by Von Frey and hot stabbing instrument, separately. The pathological changes of the right knee joint were observed by HE staining. The serotonin (5-HT) contents of skin tissues in the region of acupoint GB34 and SP10 were detected by ELISA. The expression levels of substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in GB34 and SP10 region skin tissues were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the blank group, the PWT and TWL of the rats in the model group were significantly decreased (P<0.001), while the contents of 5-HT and the expression levels of SP and CGRP in GB34 and SP10 region skin tissues were significantly increased (P<0.001, P<0.01). Following intervention and in comparison the with the model group, the TWL and PWT of rats in the three treatment groups were significantly increased (P<0.01), the content of 5-HT and the expression levels of SP and CGRP in GB34 and SP10 region skin tissues were significantly decreased (P<0.01, P<0.001, P<0.05). Except for the expression levels of CGRP, the above indexes of the combination group were significantly superior to those of the moxibustion and scraping groups (P<0.05, P<0.01). Findings of HE staining showed severe damaged cartilage, few chondrocytes on the surface, with subchondral neovascularization in the model group, which was relatively milder in the moxibustion, scraping, and combination groups. CONCLUSION: Moxibustion and scraping can relieve knee joint pain in KOA rats, which may be associated with its function in down-regulating the expression levels of SP and CGRP, and the content of 5-HT. The therapeutic effect of moxibustion plus scraping is better than that of moxibustion and scraping alone.

ABSTRACT

Traditional plenoptic wavefront sensors (PWS) suffer from the obvious step change of the slope response which leads to the poor performance of phase retrieval. In this paper, a neural network model combining the transformer architecture with the U-Net model is utilized to restore wavefront directly from the plenoptic image of PWS. The simulation results show that the averaged root mean square error (RMSE) of residual wavefront is less than 1/14λ (Marechal criterion), proving the proposed method successfully breaks through the non-linear problem existed in PWS wavefront sensing. In addition, our model performs better than the recently developed deep learning models and traditional modal approach. Furthermore, the robustness of our model to turbulence strength and signal level is also tested, proving the good generalizability of our model. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to perform direct wavefront detection with a deep-learning-based method in PWS-based applications and achieve the state-of-the-art performance.

ABSTRACT

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a typical fungal toxin found in feed, is highly carcinogenic. Oxidative stress is one of the main ways it exerts its toxicity; therefore, finding a suitable antioxidant is the key to reducing its toxicity. Astaxanthin (AST) is a carotenoid with strong antioxidant properties. The aim of the present research was to determine whether AST eases the AFB1-induced impairment in IPEC-J2 cells, and its specific mechanism of action. AFB1 and AST were applied to IPEC-J2 cells in different concentrations for 24 h. The AST (80 µM) significantly prevented the reduction in the IPEC-J2 cell viability that was induced by AFB1 (10 µM). The results showed that treatment with AST attenuated the AFB1-induced ROS, and cytochrome C, the Bax/Bcl2 ratio, Caspase-9, and Caspase-3, which were all activated by AFB1, were among the pro-apoptotic proteins which were diminished by AST. AST activates the Nrf2 signaling pathway and ameliorates antioxidant ability. This was further evidenced by the expression of the HO-1, NQO1, SOD2, and HSP70 genes were all upregulated. Taken together, the findings show that the impairment of oxidative stress and apoptosis, caused by the AFB1 in the IPEC-J2 cells, can be attenuated by AST triggering the Nrf2 signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Traditional plenoptic wavefront sensors (PWFS) suffer from the obvious step change of the slope response, leading to poor wavefront detection performance. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, a deep learning model is proposed to restore phase maps directly from slope measurements of PWFS. Numerical simulations are employed to demonstrate our approach, and the statistical residual wavefront root mean square error (RMSE) of our method is 0.0810 ± 0.0258λ, which is much superior to those of modal algorithm (0.2511 ± 0.0587λ) and zonal approach (0.3584 ± 0.0487λ). The internal driving force of PWFS-ResUnet is investigated, and the slope response differences between sub-apertures and directions are considered as a probably key role to help our model to accurately restore the phase map. Additionally, the robustness of our model to turbulence strength and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) level is also tested. The proposed method provides a new direction to solve the nonlinear problem of traditional PWFS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy between auricular point sticking combined with transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) and nicotine patch for smoking cessation. METHODS: Two hundred patients who voluntarily quit smoking were randomly divided into a combination group and a nicotine patch group, 100 cases in each group. In the combination group, auricular point sticking (Shenmen [TF4], Neifenmi [CO18], Pizhixia [AT4], Jiaogan [AH6a], etc., once every other day) combined with TEAS(Lieque [LU 7] and Zusanli [ST 36], with continuous wave, 20 Hz in frequency, 1 mA in current intensity, 30 min each time, once a day) were applied. In the nicotine patch group, nicotine patch was applied. Both groups were treated for 8 weeks. The immediate withdrawal rate and persistent withdrawal rate 8 weeks into treatment and in follow-up of 16 weeks after treatment in the two groups were compared; before treatment, 8 weeks into treatment and in follow-up of 16 weeks after treatment, the degree of nicotine dependence was evaluated by using Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND); 1 week into treatment, 8 weeks into treatment and in follow-up of 16 weeks after treatment, the withdrawal symptoms and smoking craving were evaluated by using Minnesota nicotine withdrawal scale (MNWS); the safety and compliance (dropped off rate and treatment completeness) were evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: There was no statistical significance of the differences in the immediate withdrawal rate and persistent withdrawal rate 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up between the two groups (P>0.05). The FTND scores were decreased 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up in the two groups compared with those before treatment (P<0.01); the FTND score during follow-up in the combination group was lower than the nicotine patch group (P<0.05). The MNWS scores were decreased 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up in the two groups compared with those 1 week into treatment (P<0.05); the changes of MNWS scores 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up in the combination group were greater than the nicotine patch group (P<0.05, P<0.01). There were no serious adverse reactions in either group. Eight weeks into treatment and during follow-up, the dropped off rates were all 16.0% (16/100) in the combination group, which were 20.0% (20/100) and 23.0% (23/100) in the nicotine patch group, there was no statistical significance of the differences in the two groups (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in treatment completeness between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Auricular point sticking combined with TEAS could effective decrease the degree of nicotine dependence, improve withdrawal symptoms in smokers, its effect is superior to nicotine patch.

Purpose: Peptide-based high-density lipoprotein (pHDL) structurally and functionally resembles the natural HDL as anti-atherosclerosis (AS) therapies. Since pHDL contains a large hydrophobic core, this study aims to evaluate the potentials of pHDL as a hydrophobic drug carrier and the efficiency of drug-loaded pHDL in the control of AS. Methods: The pHDL encapsulation of hydrophobic components from natural plants, including curcumin (Cur) and tanshinone IIA (TanIIA), was achieved using one-step microfluidics. Then, morphological features and loading efficiencies of pHDL-Cur and pHDL-TanIIA were determined by TEM and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. Taking the fluorescence advantage of Cur, localizations of loaded Cur in pHDL were investigated by fluorescence quenchers, and recruitments of Cur to AS plaques were assessed with ex vivo imaging. Based on anti-inflammatory properties of TanIIA, pHDL-TanIIA was accordingly developed to evaluate the anti-AS effects through examinations of plasma lipid parameters and pathological alterations of plaque-associated regions. Results: Both lipophilic Cur and TanIIA can be efficiently loaded into pHDL carriers. The resultant pHDL-Cur and pHDL-TanIIA inherit the homogeneous nano-disk structure of pHDL. By using pHDL-Cur, the encapsulated hydrophobics are tracked in the core of pHDL, and incorporations of Cur with pHDL vehicles greatly improve the bioavailability and association of Cur with AS plaques. Moreover, when loaded with TanIIA, which has established its role in anti-AS as an anti-inflammatory candidate, synergistic effects in reducing AS lesions and improving pathological alterations of main organs related to AS were achieved. Conclusion: The pHDL system could potentially be applied for both imaging and therapy in animal models of AS. Benefits of pHDL-based drug delivery will potentially extend the application scenarios of bioactive chemicals from natural plants which are underutilized due to features like low bioavailability and facilitate the clinical translation of synthetic HDL therapies in HDL-associated disorders, including but not limited to AS.

Under tidal scouring, residual petroleum in the intertidal sediment after oil spills could release again, causing secondary pollution in the marine ecosystem. The current study aimed to investigate the dynamic process and principles of crude oil release from silty intertidal sediment under different influencing factors and screened for the key factors. In this paper, the fitting equations and correlation between the release amount and various factors were explored through the single-factor and orthogonal experiments. Then, the key influencing factors were selected for multi-factor fitting of the release amount. The results showed that the oil release amount rose with the increase in oil concentration, oscillation frequency, and release time, but decreased with an increase in salinity. As the pH decreased, the oil release amount increased. The relationship between release amount and concentration/oscillation frequency can be equipped by the polynomial equation, and the average R2 was 0.95 and 0.84, respectively. The release amount can be fitted by the Lagergren pseudo-second-order kinetic equation with time, with the average R2 0.89. The pH was negatively correlated with the release amount in the fresh contaminated sediment but positively correlated with the weathered one. The correlation between each factor and oil release amount was ranked (from large to small) as oil concentration, oscillation frequency, salinity, time, and pH. At last, a polynomial equation can be fitted between the key influencing factors (oil concentration and oscillation frequency) and the release amount. The results can provide a theoretical basis for predicting the secondary pollution owing to the oil re-release from intertidal sediment.

ABSTRACT

As the key contributor to plankton biomass and nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems, photosynthetic picoeukaryotes (PPEs) have been recently investigated in freshwater ecosystems. However, the limited access to remote areas creates challenges for PPE sample preservation before sorting and counting by flow cytometry (FCM) in the laboratory. Here, we explored the effects of different preservation methods on the PPE community by combining FCM sorting and high-throughput sequencing. Our results showed that dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) cryoprotection could destroy the fluorescence and cell structure of the PPEs, making the subsequent FCM analysis and sorting difficult. Aldehyde fixation maintained the PPE fluorescence, and the fixed samples were of sufficient quality for abundance analysis and sorting by FCM. However, the sequencing results showed that, after preservation by aldehydes, the proportion of PPEs dramatically decreased to approximately 10%, in comparison to 90% in the fresh samples, and the sequences of Ascomycota significantly increased. In contrast, preservation with Pluronic F68 (F68) not only could maintain the PPE abundance close to the initial value but also could keep the PPE community similar to that in the fresh samples over a storage time of 6 months. Thus, F68 cryopreservation is a suitable preservation method for PPE communities from freshwater lakes. IMPORTANCE PPEs contribute significantly to primary productivity in freshwater ecosystems. The combination of FCM sorting and high-throughput sequencing has been shown to be a powerful approach and can largely improve our view of the PPE diversity. However, the water samples could not be counted and sorted immediately after sampling from many lakes due to the inaccessibility of FCM in the field. Thus, the comparison of different preservation methods that allow subsequent analysis of the community structure by high-throughput sequencing is an urgent need. Our results indicated that F68 cryopreservation could maintain the PPE abundance close to the initial value and keep the community similar to that in the fresh samples over a storage time of 6 months.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of different acupuncture frequencies in tobacco-dependent patients and explore the impact of nicotine metabolite rate (NMR) on smoking cessation in the intervention with acupuncture. METHODS: A total of 120 cases of tobacco-dependent patients were randomly divided into a high-frequency group (60 cases, 12 cases dropped off) and a low-frequency group (60 cases, 6 cases dropped off). In the two groups, smoking cessation counseling was provided prior to acupuncture. Acupuncture was applied to Baihui (GV 20), Lieque (LU 7), Zusanli (ST 36), etc. Additionally, electric stimulation was added at Lieque (LU 7) and Zusanli (ST 36), with continuous wave, 15 Hz in frequency. The duration of treatment was 8 weeks in either group. In the high-frequency group, the treatment was given 5 times weekly from week 1 to week 4, and was 3 times weekly from week 5 to week 8. In the low-frequency group, the treatment was given 3 times weekly from week 1 to week 4, and was twice a week from week 5 to week 8. The immediate withdrawal rate, persistent withdrawal rate, the score of Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND) before and after treatment, as well as the score of Minnesota nicotine withdrawal scale (MNWS) in 1 and 8 weeks of treatment were compared among the patients with high and low NMR between the two groups separately. The Logistic regression analysis was used to screen the influencing factors of smoking cessation in the intervention with acupuncture. RESULTS: After treatment, there was no statistical significance of the differences in the immediate withdrawal rate (35.4% [17/48] vs 29.6% [16/54]) and the persistent withdrawal rate (33.3% [16/48] vs 25.9% [14/54]) between the high-frequency group and the low-frequency group (P>0.05). The difference in withdrawal rate had no statistical significance between high and low NMR patients (P>0.05). FTND scores after treatment were lower than those before treatment (P<0.01) and MNWS scores were lower than those in 1 week of treatment (P<0.01) in the two groups. However, the differences had no statistical significance between the two groups and between the patients with high NMR and low NMR (P>0.05). Age, education level and NMR were the influencing factors of smoking cessation in the intervention with acupuncture (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture with different frequencies has no obvious impact on the efficacy in tobacco-dependent patients. The lower nicotine metabolite rate in individuals, the better efficacy of acupuncture. The smokers with high nicotine metabolite rate may obtain a better effect of cessation in the high-frequency intervention with acupuncture.

With the development of marine oil industry, oil spill accidents will inevitably occur, further polluting the intertidal zone and causing biological poisoning. The muddy intertidal zone and Boleophthalmus pectinirostris were selected as the research objects to conduct indoor acute exposure experiments within 48 h of crude oil pollution. Statistical analysis was used to reveal the activity changes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the gills and liver of mudskipper. Then, integrated biomarker response (IBR) indicators were established to comprehensively evaluate the biological toxicity. The results showed that the activities of SOD, CAT and GST in livers were higher than those in gills, and the maximum induction multipliers of SOD, CAT and GPx in livers appeared earlier than those in gills. Both SOD and GPx activities were induced at low pollutant concentrations and inhibited at high pollutant concentrations. For the dose-effect, the change trends of CAT and SOD were roughly inversed. There was substrate competition between GPx and CAT, with opposite trends over time. The activating mechanism of GST was similar to that of GPx, and the activation time was earlier than that of GPx. In terms of dose-effect trends, the IBR showed that the antioxidant enzymes activities in biological tissues were induced by low and inhibited by high pollutant concentrations. Overall, SOD and GPx in gills and CAT and GST in livers of the mudskippers were suitable as representative markers to comprehensively analyze and evaluate the biotoxicity effects of oil pollution in the intertidal zone. The star plots and IBR values obtained after data standardization were consistent with the enzyme activity differences, which can be used as valid supplementary indexes for biotoxicity evaluation. These research findings provide theoretical support for early indicators of biological toxicity after crude oil pollution in intertidal zones.

Saline wastewater was used in this study to culture freshwater microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa in sequencing batch photobioreactor to improve the sedimentation and lipid production of algal cells. Influent salinity of 0.5% or above effectively promoted the sedimentation of microalgae in the settling stage of photobioreactor, and greatly reduced the algal biomass in effluent. The mechanism of the saline wastewater in improving the sedimentation of microalgae included decreasing zeta potential, increasing cell particle size and promoting extracellular polymeric substances synthesis, which varied with influent salinity. Saline wastewater also promoted the lipid accumulation in microalgae. Lipid content of microalgae increased with increasing influent salinity. However, the growth of microalgae was greatly inhibited at the influent salinity of 2.0% and 3.0%. Therefore, the PBR with influent salinity of 1.0% achieved the highest productivity of microalgae lipid. The saturation of fatty acids of microalgae gradually increased with increasing influent salinity.

The increase of planting density is a dominant approach for the higher yield of maize. However, the stalks of some varieties are prone to lodging under high density conditions. Much research has been done on the evaluation of maize lodging resistance. But there are few comprehensive reports on the determination of maize lodging resistance in situ without injury under field conditions. This study introduces a non-destructive in situ tester to determine the lodging resistance of the different maize varieties in the field. The force value can be obtained by pulling the stalk to different angles with this instrument, which is used to evaluate the lodging resistance of maize varieties. From 2018 to 2020, a total of 1,172 sample plants from 113 maize varieties were tested for the lodging resistance of plants. The statistical results show that the values of force on maize plants at 45° inclination angles (F45) are appropriate to characterize maize lodging resistance in situ by nondestructive testing in the field. According to the F45 value, the maximum lodging resistance Fmax can be inferred. The formula is: Fmax =1.1354 F45 - 0.3358. The evaluation results of lodging resistance of different varieties of this study are basically consistent with the test results of three-point bending method, moving wind tunnel and other methods. Therefore, the F45 value is the optimal index for nondestructive evaluation of maize stalk-lodging resistance under the field-planting conditions.

ABSTRACT

The evaluation about the relative distribution of cyanobacterial biomass between the sediment and water column would be indispensable to understand if benthic cyanobacteria are important to cyanobacterial biomass in the water column. A separation method for the rapid quantification of benthic cyanobacteria in Lake Chaohu was developed by density-gradient centrifugation. A 24 full factorial design and response surface methodology was employed to optimize the extraction protocol. Under the optimal operating parameters including 29% Percoll solution, 30 min centrifugation time, 7200 r/min centrifugation speed, and a 1:10 ratio between the volume of sediment and Percoll solution, the recovery rate of cyanobacteria in sediment was 96.73%. Temporal and spatial variations in cyanobacterial biomass in water and sediment were investigated monthly throughout a whole year. In general, cyanobacterial biomass per square centimeter in the water column showed high spatial-temporal changes, tending to increase in February and reaching a peak in April at some sites due to the growth of Dolichospermum. The second peak arrived in July and September and was caused by the rapid growth of Microcystis. Concurrently, cyanobacteria biomass per unit area in sediment showed a clear temporal change pattern, increasing from October and reaching a peak level in February at all the sampling sites. The average ratio of cyanobacterial biomass in water to that in sediment was lowest in January at 1.48 and increased to the highest level in July at 318.61. Although Microcystis and Dolichospermum were dominant species in the water column, only Microcystis was observed in the Percoll solution extraction from sediment. Microscopic observation revealed that a very small fraction of Microcystis cells could survive in sediment, and most of the cells decomposed when the water temperature increased after June. Therefore, the contribution of the recruitment of cyanobacteria could be negligible in Lake Chaohu.
