ABSTRACT

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly harmful pollutant that poses a serious threat to human health. The liver is the primary organ for Cd accumulation, and Cd-induced hepatotoxicity has been shown to be strongly correlated with an oxidative imbalance in hepatocytes. Our previous studies in the eukaryotic model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae revealed that not only co-treatment but also pretreatment with aqueous Moringa oleifera Lam. leaf extract (AMOLE) effectively mitigated Cd toxicity by reducing intracellular Cd accumulation and Cd-mediated oxidative stress. In this study, we therefore investigated the preventive effect of AMOLE against Cd toxicity in human HepG2 hepatocytes. The results showed that, similar to the case of the yeast model, pretreatment with AMOLE prior to Cd exposure also significantly inhibited Cd-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. Untargeted LC-MS/MS-based metabolomic analysis of AMOLE revealed that its major phytochemical constituents were organic acids, particularly phenolic acids and carboxylic acids. Additionally, DPPH-HPTLC fingerprints suggested that quercetin and other flavonoids possibly contribute to the antioxidant activities of AMOLE. Based on our findings, it appears that pretreatment with AMOLE prevented Cd-induced hepatotoxicity via three possible mechanisms: i) direct elimination of free radicals by AMOLE antioxidant compounds; ii) upregulation of antioxidant defensive machinery (GPx1, and HO-1) via Nrf2 signaling cascade to improve cellular antioxidant capacity; and iii) reduction of intracellular Cd accumulation, probably by suppressing Cd uptake. These data strongly suggest the high potential of AMOLE for clinical utility in the prevention of Cd toxicity.

ABSTRACT

Background: Since 1992, over 800 pancreas transplants have been performed in Korea. However, this number is significantly lower compared to the number of kidney or liver transplants. Methods: Between 2015 and July 2023, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital conducted 100 pancreas transplants, accounting for about 20% of all transplants performed in Korea during this period. The study comprised 27 simultaneous pancreas and kidney (SPK) transplants, 23 pancreas after kidney (PAK) transplants, and 50 pancreas transplant alone (PTA) cases. Duodenoduodenostomy was the primary surgical technique employed for exocrine drainage, along with various modifications of the venous outflow anastomosis. Results: The availability of brain-dead donors for kidney transplants was lower compared to isolated pancreas transplants. Patients undergoing SPK transplants faced significantly longer waiting times than those receiving PTA or PAK transplants. The rate of surgical complications was acceptable, with a notably low thrombotic graft failure rate of 1.0%. In the PTA group, acute rejection of the graft pancreas occurred frequently (18.0%), though this was not statistically significant (P=0.328). The pancreas transplantation survival rates were 91.0%, 78.5%, and 75.4% at 1, 5, and 9 years, respectively. The PTA group exhibited a lower graft survival rate than the SPK and PAK groups, with marginal statistical significance (P=0.059). Conclusions: Graft survival rates have improved over time due to advancements in surgical techniques and immunosuppressant strategies. By sharing our experiences, we aim to enhance the activity and success of pancreas transplantation in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Aseptic meningitis comprises meningeal inflammation and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis without positive Gram stain and culture. Regional differences exist in the prevalence of viral etiologies of aseptic meningitis. We aimed to assess the etiologies of aseptic meningitis in immunocompetent adults, focusing on herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed immunocompetent adults diagnosed with meningitis at a Korean tertiary care hospital from 2016 to 2018. Aseptic meningitis was defined through clinical and CSF analysis. We compared clinical and laboratory characteristics across viral etiologies and investigated predictors of HSV-2 meningitis. RESULTS: A total of 98 patients (46.9% female) with aseptic meningitis were finally enrolled. The etiologies of aseptic meningitis were identified in 62 patients (63.3%), including enterovirus (28.5%), HSV-2 (16.3%), and varicella zoster virus (VZV, 15.3%). HSV-2 showed female predominance, with shorter admission times with longer hospital stays and a recurrent meningitis history. Compared to other viral etiologies, HSV-2 showed higher CSF white blood cell (WBC) counts and protein levels but lower C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. A random forest model identified previous meningitis history and serum CRP level as key predictors of HSV-2 meningitis. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides insights into the etiologies of aseptic meningitis in a specific Korean region, identifying HSV-2 as a notable cause. The prediction model suggested that the clinical history of previous meningitis and serum CRP level may guide clinical assessment of meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPK) is the most common type of pancreas transplant performed worldwide. In contrast, there are a few drawbacks to pancreas after kidney transplant (PAK), such as the requirement for an additional operation, the immunologic risk, etc. SPK is the best option, but because of a lack of deceased donors and a lengthy waiting period, it is not always possible to use it. METHODS: From 2015 to 2022, we performed 23 SPKs and 21 PAKs at the Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital in Korea. We compared the findings of PAK and SPK conducted within the same time period. RESULTS: The waiting time for pancreatic graft was significantly shorter in the PAK than SPK group (345 days vs 1350 days, P ≤ .001). Throughout the monitoring period, just 1 pancreatic graft was lost in patients who underwent PAK, and the 7-year graft survival was 95%, with no statistically significant difference compared to SPK (90.3%, P = .600). Moreover, the graft survival of SPK or PAK was superior to that of pancreatic transplant alone (63.7%, P = .016). Only 1 pancreatic graft loss was a case of mortality with a functioning graft. No additional kidney transplant loss was observed in PAK recipients. There was no variation in creatinine levels between the pretransplant and posttransplant periods. There were 2 incidents of pancreatic graft and kidney graft rejection, respectively, but the grafts entirely recovered following rejection treatment. CONCLUSION: According to our experiences, PAK could be another best choice for individuals with diabetic end-stage renal disease, especially in cases where deceased donors were severely deficient but living donor kidney transplants were actively performed in countries like Korea.

ABSTRACT

Numerous neuroimmunological disorders present with sleep-related symptoms. The identification of novel autoantibodies introduces new clinical categories in autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system and generates interest in the dynamic interaction between sleep and the immune system. In this review, the complex relationship among sleep, immune regulation, and neuroimmunological disorders was examined with emphasis on the vital role of sleep in modulating immune function and its influence on these conditions, This relationship emphasizes the importance of assessments and management of sleep quality in the treatment approaches for neuroimmunological disorders.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sleep disorder among adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the lifestyle factors and sleep disturbances associated with the symptoms suggestive of RLS in Korean adolescents. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we investigated a total of 25,789 adolescents (mean age, 15.8 ± 1.7 years; male, 48.5 %). The presence of symptoms suggestive of RLS was assessed with a single question about RLS in the Global Sleep Assessment Questionnaire. We performed multiple logistic regression analysis to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of lifestyle factors and sleep disturbances that were independently associated with adolescent RLS. RESULTS: The prevalence of RLS-suggestive symptoms was 5.1 % among adolescents. After adjustment, lifestyle factors associated with symptoms suggestive of RLS were occasional alcohol consumption (OR, 1.245; 95 % CI, 1.006-1.540) and proneness to Internet addiction (OR, 1.027; 95 % CI, 1.021-1.033). Bedtime behaviors associated with RLS-suggestive symptoms were sleeping with a doll or pet (OR, 1.194; 95 % CI, 1.032-1.381) and sleeping with a TV or radio on (OR, 1.366; 95 % CI, 1.156-1.614). Male sex, frequent snoring and witnessed apnea, perceived sleep insufficiency, excessive daytime sleepiness were also associated with RLS-suggestive symptoms in adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents with symptoms suggestive of RLS were associated with different lifestyle factors compared to adults with RLS. Further research is needed to determine the clinical implications of lifestyle factors in adolescent RLS.

ABSTRACT

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are vital components of human and animal nutrition that contribute to the building blocks of proteins. In this study, 170 protease-producing strains were isolated and screened from soy-fermented foods. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NY130 was obtained from Cheonggukjang with high production of BCAAs. Optimal production of protease from B. amyloliquefaciens NY130 (protease NY130) was achieved at 42 °C and pH 6.0 for 21 h. It was purified and determined as 27- and 40 kDa. Protease NY130 showed maximum activity at pH 9.0 and 45 °C with Km value of 10.95 mg for ISP and 1.69 mg for WPI. Protease-treated ISP and WPI showed increased sweetness and saltiness via electronic tongue analysis and enhanced the protective effect against oxidative stress in C2C12 myocytes by increasing p-mTOR/mTOR protein expression to 160%. This work possesses potential in producing BCAAs by using protease for utilization in food.

ABSTRACT

Yuzu (Citrus junos Sieb.) is a peel-edible fruit with a pleasant aroma, but its bitter taste can impact consumer appeal. In this study, an efficient enzymatic method reduced bitterness in green yuzu powder (GYP). Cellulase KN and naringinase from Aspergillus oryzae NYO-2 significantly decreased naringin and neohesperidin content by over 87 %, while increasing total dietary fiber and soluble dietary fiber by up to 10 % and 51 %, respectively. Insoluble dietary fiber decreased by up to 22 %. Cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin contents in enzyme-treated YP decreased by 1.15-2.00-fold, respectively. Enzyme-treated GYP exhibited improved physicochemical properties, including enhanced solubility, oil-holding capacity, and water swelling capacities. 3T3-L1 cells treated with cellulase-treated GYP and naringinase-treated GYP showed lower lipid accumulation and higher lipolysis capability than GYP, along with decreased fatty acid synthase contents. These findings suggest that enzyme-treated GYP holds potential as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to various health complications, including erectile dysfunction (ED), which is more prevalent in individuals with OSA. This study explored ED in Korean OSA patients and assessed the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on ED. METHODS: A total of 87 male patients with OSA from four different sleep centers underwent physical measurements and completed sleep and mental health (MH) questionnaires, including the Korean version of the International index of erectile function (IIEF), before and three months after initiating CPAP therapy. RESULTS: After three months of CPAP therapy, the patients demonstrated a significant improvement in ED as measured on the IIEF. However, the study found no significant correlation between the duration of CPAP use and the improvement in IIEF score. It did identify the SF36 quality of life assessment as a significant factor influencing ED improvement after CPAP. CONCLUSIONS: ED is a prevalent issue that escalates with age and is associated with OSA. CPAP therapy has shown potential in alleviating ED symptoms, particularly in those with underlying psychological conditions, although further research is required to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Downy mildew of onion caused by a soil-inhabiting water mold, Peronospora destructor, is one of the most devastating diseases that can destroy entire onion fields in a matter of days. In this study, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay that allows for rapid detection of P. destructor by visual inspection. The internal transcribed spacer 2 region of P. destructor was used to design primer sets for LAMP reactions. The optimal temperature and incubation time were determined for the most efficient primer set. In the optimized condition, the LAMP assay exhibited at least 100 times more sensitivity than conventional PCR, detecting femtogram levels of P. destructor genomic DNA (gDNA). Detection of the pathogen from a small number of spores without gDNA extraction further confirmed the high sensitivity of the assay. For specificity, the LAMP assay was negative for gDNA of other fungal pathogens that cause various diseases on onion and oomycetes, whereas the assay was positive for gDNA extracted from onion tissues showing the typical downy mildew symptoms. Finally, we examined the efficacy of the LAMP assay in detection of P. destructor in soils. Soils collected from onion fields that had been contaminated with P. destructor were solarized for 60 days. Whereas the LAMP assay was negative for the solarized soils, we were able to detect P. destructor that oversummers in fields. The LAMP assay developed in this study enables rapid detection and diagnosis of downy mildew of onion in infected tissues and in soil.

BACKGROUND: Aspiration pneumonia has a high recurrence rate, and oral care by dentists has been found effective in preventing its onset; however, this has not been evaluated using prospective studies. Therefore, we conducted a prospective study to evaluate the effectiveness of professional oral care by dentists in reducing aspiration pneumonia recurrence in older adult patients. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we evaluated a dental oral care intervention, using a historical control group (control group). It was conducted at a single-centre regional core hospital in Japan that serves a large number of patients aged older than 80 years. Patients who were hospitalised for aspiration pneumonia were included in this study. During the study period (1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022), the clinical group received weekly professional cleaning by a dentist and the control group received standard oral care by a nurse as usual from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021. The dentist oral care group received weekly professional oral care from a dentist and was followed prospectively for 1 year. A Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to evaluate the timing of recurrent aspiration pneumonia or death. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to obtain a hazard ratio and determine the 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: There were 91 participants in the clinical group and 94 in the control group. The mean age of participants was 85 years, and 75 (40.5%) were female. The recurrence rate was 27.5% in the clinical group and 44.7% in the control group (P = .005). Professional cleaning by a dentist reduced the risk of recurrence of aspiration pneumonia by approximately 50% (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.465; 95% confidence interval, 0.278-0.78). CONCLUSIONS: Professional cleaning by a dentist was associated with a lower rate of aspiration pneumonia recurrence than nurse-provided conventional oral care.

ABSTRACT

Electronic waste (e-waste) illegally disposal in Thailand is becoming more widespread. A sustainable metal recovery technology is needed. A phytotechnology called "phytomining" of metals such as nickel (Ni) is a promising technology providing a sustainable solution to the growing e-waste problems. This study investigated the ability of Acacia species in association with e-waste site isolated, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Acacia mangium accumulated higher Ni in their tissues when Ni concentrations in soil were lower than 200 mg kg-1. The inoculation of PGPR B. amyloliquefaciens enhanced Ni uptake and accumulation in the leaves, stem, and root. The results showed that the highest Ni concentration was found in the root ash (825.50 mg kg-1) when inoculated plants were grown in soil containing 600 mg kg-1 Ni. Hence, the Ni recovery process and mass balance were performed on root ashes. The highest Ni recovery was 91.3% from the acid (H2SO4) leachate of the ash of inoculated plant treated with 600 mg kg-1 Ni. This demonstrates the feasibility of PGPR-assisted phytomining from Ni-contaminated soil. Phytomining of Ni from any e-waste contaminated sites using Acacia mangium in combination with B. amyloliquefaciens can promote plant growth and improve the uptake of Ni.


Phytomining from electronic waste is an appealing technology that can provide a long-term waste management strategy while valuable trace metals can be recovered. In this study, we evaluated the nickel phytomining ability of Acacia mangium in association with PGPR Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. The results from this study showed that Ni recovery from phytomass using A. mangium with B. amyloliquefaciens can be further improved leading to a sustainable waste management strategy.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the article is to investigate the associations of disease duration and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA) status with the effectiveness of abatacept in biologic-naïve patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: We performed post hoc analyses of the Orencia® Registry in Geographically Assembled Multicenter Investigation (ORIGAMI) study of biologic-naïve RA patients aged ≥20 years with moderate disease activity who were prescribed abatacept. Changes in the Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI) and Japanese Health Assessment Questionnaire (J-HAQ) at 4, 24, and 52 weeks of treatment were analysed in patients divided according to ACPA serostatus (positive/negative), disease duration (<1/≥1 year), or both. RESULTS: SDAI scores decreased from baseline in all groups. SDAI scores tended to decrease more in the ACPA-positive group and disease duration <1-year group than in the ACPA-negative group and disease duration ≥1-year group, respectively. In the disease duration <1-year group, SDAI tended to decrease more in the ACPA-positive group than in the ACPA-negative group. Disease duration was independently associated with the change in SDAI and SDAI remission at Week 52 in multivariable regression models. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that starting abatacept within 1 year of diagnosis was associated with greater effectiveness of abatacept in biologic-naïve patients with RA and moderate disease activity.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: This study investigated fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness to determine which was more closely related to depression in the general population. PATIENTS/METHODS: Participants were investigated across 15 South Korean districts. Excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and depression were evaluated using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively. Depression was defined as PHQ-9 ≥ 10. The authors classified the combination of excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue as excessive daytime sleepiness with fatigue (E+F+, ESS ≥ 11, FSS ≥ 36), fatigue without excessive daytime sleepiness (E-F+, ESS < 11, FSS ≥ 36), excessive daytime sleepiness without fatigue (E+F-, ESS ≥ 11, FSS < 36), and no fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness (E-F-, ESS < 11, FSS < 36). RESULTS: Among 2,493 participants (1,257 women), mean age was 47.9 ± 0.3 years. The prevalence of depression, fatigue, and excessive daytime sleepiness was 8.4% (n = 210), 30.8% (n = 767), and 15.3% (n = 382), respectively. The frequency of the four categories with depression (vs. controls) was as follows.: E+F+ (n = 67, 31.9% vs. 7.3%) (P < 0.001), E-F+ (n = 71, 33.8% vs. 20.3%) (P < 0.001), E+F-( n = 16, 7.6% vs. 5.8%) (P = 0.294), and E-F- (n = 56, 26.7% vs. 66.6%) (P < 0.001). After adjusting for covariates, depression was associated with E+F+ (odds ratio, OR 8.804, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.818-13.132), E-F+ (OR 3.942, 95% CI 2.704-5.747), E+F- (OR 2.812, 95% CI 1.542-5.131), and E-F- (reference). Additionally, we performed logistic regression according to two categories. There was no significant difference in the association of depression between E+F- (reference) and E-F+ (OR 1.399, 95% CI 0.760-2.575). CONCLUSION: Although fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness were associated with depression regardless of the presence of each other, we could not clarify which was more closely related to depression.

Enzymatic modifications have been applied in citrus to enhance their physicochemical and biological properties and reduce their bitterness. Notwithstanding, research on the combination of enzyme treatment of yuzu is lacking. In this study, yuzu was treated with a combination of isolated cellulase NY203, pectinase UF, and cellulase KN, and this enzymatic treatment was found to increase monosaccharide, naringenin, and hesperetin levels. In contrast, dietary fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin levels were decreased. Moreover, the enzymes disintegrated the inner and outer surface structures and chemical bonding of yuzu, thus improving its solubility rate, water-holding capacity, oil-adsorption capacity, cholesterol-binding capacity, and water-swelling capacity. Furthermore, NY203 + UF + KN combination treatment reduced the bitterness of treated yuzu by 50 % compared with the control. Additionally, NY203 + UF + KN treatment yielded a 28 % decrease in lipid accumulation and two-fold higher lipolytic activity in 3T3L-1 adipocytes. ABSTRACT

In this study, some confusing points about electron film dosimetry using white polystyrene suggested by international protocols were verified using a clinical linear accelerator (LINAC). According to international protocol recommendations, ionometric measurements and film dosimetry were performed on an SP34 slab phantom at various electron energies. Scaling factor analysis using ionometric measurements yielded a depth scaling factor of 0.923 and a fluence scaling factor of 1.019 at an electron beam energy of <10 MeV (i.e., R50 < 4.0 g/cm2). It was confirmed that the water-equivalent characteristics were similar because they have values similar to white polystyrene (i.e., depth scaling factor of 0.922 and fluence scaling factor of 1.019) presented in international protocols. Furthermore, percentage depth dose (PDD) curve analysis using film dosimetry showed that when the density thickness of the SP34 slab phantom was assumed to be water-equivalent, it was found to be most similar to the PDD curve measured using an ionization chamber in water as a reference medium. Therefore, we proved that the international protocol recommendation that no correction for measured depth dose is required means that no scaling factor correction for the plastic phantom is necessary. This study confirmed two confusing points that could occur while determining beam characteristics using electron film dosimetry, and it is expected to be used as basic data for future research on clinical LINACs.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of postharvest kiwifruit rot has caused great economic losses in major kiwifruit-producing countries. Several pathogens are involved in kiwifruit rot, notably Botryosphaeria dothidea, and Diaporthe species. In this study, a recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of the pathogens responsible for posing significant threats to the kiwifruit industries. The RPA primer pairs tested in this study were highly specific for detection of B. dothidea and D. eres. The detection limits of our RPA assays were approximately two picograms of fungal genomic DNA. The optimal conditions for the RPA assays were determined to be at a temperature of 39°C maintained for a minimum duration of 5 min. We were able to detect the pathogens from kiwifruit samples inoculated with a very small number of conidia. The RPA assays enabled specific, sensitive, and rapid detection of B. dothidea and D. eres, the primary pathogens responsible for kiwifruit rots in South Korea.

ABSTRACT

Naringin found in citrus fruits is a flavanone glycoside with numerous biological activities. However, the bitterness, low water-solubility, and low bioavailability of naringin are the main issues limiting its use in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. Herein, a glucansucrase from isolated Leuconostoc citreum NY87 was used for trans-α-glucosylattion of naringin by using sucrose as substrate. Two naringin glucosides (O-α-D-glucosyl-(1'''' → 6″) naringin (compound 1) and 4'-O-α-D-glucosyl naringin (compound 2)) were purified and determined their structures by nuclear magnetic resonance. The optimization condition for the synthesis of compound 1 was obtained at 10 mM naringin, 200 mM sucrose, and 337.5 mU/mL at 28 °C for 24 h by response surface methodology method. Compound 1 and compound 2 showed 1896- and 3272 times higher water solubility than naringin. Furthermore, the bitterness via the human bitter taste receptor TAS2R39 displayed that compound 1 was reduced 2.9 times bitterness compared with naringin, while compound 2 did not express bitterness at 1 mM. Both compounds expressed higher neuroprotective effects than naringin on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells treated with 5 mM scopolamine based on cell viability and cortisol content. Compound 1 reduced acetylcholinesterase activity more than naringin and compound 2. These results indicate that naringin glucosides could be utilized as functional material in the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. ABSTRACT

MRI images used in breast cancer diagnosis are taken in a lying position and therefore are inappropriate for reconstructing the natural breast shape in a standing position. Some studies have proposed methods to present the breast shape in a standing position using an ordinary differential equation of the finite element method. However, it is difficult to obtain meaningful results because breast tissues have different elastic moduli. This study proposed a multi-class semantic segmentation method for breast tissues to reconstruct breast shapes using U-Net based on Haar wavelet pooling. First, a dataset was constructed by labeling the skin, fat, and fibro-glandular tissues and the background from MRI images taken in a lying position. Next, multi-class semantic segmentation was performed using U-Net based on Haar wavelet pooling to improve the segmentation accuracy for breast tissues. The U-Net effectively extracted breast tissue features while reducing image information loss in a subsampling stage using multiple sub-bands. In addition, the proposed network is robust to overfitting. The proposed network showed a mIOU of 87.48 for segmenting breast tissues. The proposed networks demonstrated high-accuracy segmentation for breast tissue with different elastic moduli to reconstruct the natural breast shape.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Excess or insufficient sleep, irregular sleep-wake patterns, and an extreme early or late chronotypes adversely impact physical and mental health. Changes in sleep characteristics should therefore be tracked, and factors that contribute to poor sleep should be identified. We investigated the changes in sleep patterns among South Korean adults during 2009-2018. METHODS: Using data of a representative sample of South Korean adults from the 2009 (n=2,658, 48.5% males; age=44.5±15.0 years old [mean±standard deviation], age range=19-86 years) and 2018 (n=2,389, 49.1% males; age=47.9±16.3 years, age range=19-92 years) Korean Headache-Sleep Study, we explored changes in sleep timing, sleep duration, chronotype, and social jetlag (SJL). Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between average sleep duration and depression. RESULTS: From 2009 to 2018, bedtimes were advanced by 10 and 25 min on workdays and free days, respectively. Meanwhile, wake-up times were advanced by 13 min and delayed by 12 min on workdays and free days, respectively. The average sleep duration significantly decreased from 7.45 h to 7.13 h. The prevalence of short sleep duration (<7 h) increased, whereas that of long sleep duration (≥8 h) decreased. A circadian preference toward eveningness and SJL increased. The prevalence of depression increased from 4.6% to 8.4%, and there were significant reverse J-shaped and U-shaped associations between average sleep duration and depression in 2009 and 2018, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in sleep patterns and the association between sleep duration and depressive mood were determined from a representative sample of the South Korean adult population. Interventions to modify sleep behaviors might improve public health.
