ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The effect of serum iron or ferritin parameters on mortality among critically ill patients is not well characterized. AIM: To determine the association between serum iron or ferritin parameters and mortality among critically ill patients. METHODS: Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for studies on serum iron or ferritin parameters and mortality among critically ill patients. Two reviewers independently assessed, selected, and abstracted data from studies reporting on serum iron or ferritin parameters and mortality among critically ill patients. Data on serum iron or ferritin levels, mortality, and demographics were extracted. RESULTS: Nineteen studies comprising 125490 patients were eligible for inclusion. We observed a slight negative effect of serum ferritin on mortality in the United States population [relative risk (RR) 1.002; 95%CI: 1.002-1.004). In patients with sepsis, serum iron had a significant negative effect on mortality (RR = 1.567; 95%CI: 1.208-1.925). CONCLUSION: This systematic review presents evidence of a negative correlation between serum iron levels and mortality among patients with sepsis. Furthermore, it reveals a minor yet adverse impact of serum ferritin on mortality among the United States population.

ABSTRACT

To screen immune-related prognostic biomarkers in low-grade glioma (LGG), and reveal the potential regulatory mechanism. The differential expressed genes (DEGs) between alive and dead patients were initially identified, then the key common genes between DEGs and immune-related genes were obtained. Regarding the key DEGs associated with the overall survival (OS), their clinical value was assessed by Kaplan-Meier, RCS, logistic regression, ROC, and decision curve analysis methods. We also assessed the role of immune infiltration on the association between key DEGs and OS. All the analyses were based on the TGCA-LGG data. Finally, we conducted the molecular docking analysis to explore the targeting binding of key DEGs with the therapeutic agents in LGG. Among 146 DEGs, only interleukin-6 (IL-6) was finally screened as an immune-related biomarker. High expression of IL-6 significantly correlated with poor OS time (all P < .05), showing a linear relationship. The combination of IL-6 with IDH1 mutation had the most favorable prediction performance on survival status and they achieved a good clinical net benefit. Next, we found a significant relationship between IL-6 and immune microenvironment score, and the immune microenvironment played a mediating effect on the association of IL-6 with survival (all P < .05). Detailly, IL-6 was positively related to M1 macrophage infiltration abundance and its biomarkers (all P < .05). Finally, we obtained 4 therapeutic agents in LGG targeting IL-6, and their targeting binding relationships were all verified. IL6, as an immune-related biomarker, was associated with the prognosis in LGG, and it can be a therapeutic target in LGG.

ABSTRACT

The shelf life of whole wheat bread (WWB) significantly impacts its freshness and overall quality. This research investigated the impact of chitosan lactate (CL) on various characteristics influencing the shelf life of WWB, including its physical, chemical, textural, antimicrobial, and sensory attributes. These characteristics were evaluated by conducting various experiments such as physical inspection, moisture, impedance, swelling, color, texture, FTIR, microbiological, and sensory analysis. CL with different concentrations was incorporated into WWB formulations: P0.0 (0.0% w/w CL, control), P0.5 (0.5% w/w CL), P1.0 (1.0% w/w CL), P2.0 (2.0% w/w CL), and P3.0 (3.0% w/w CL). The inclusion of CL promoted the Maillard reaction (MR) compared to P0.0. The promotion of MR resulted in the formation of a shinier crust, which increased as the CL content was increased. P0.5 comprised large-sized pores and exhibited increased loaf height. CL-containing WWB formulations showed an increased moisture content and decreased impedance values compared to the control. FTIR analysis of P0.5 demonstrated the enhanced interaction and bonding of water molecules. P0.5 demonstrated optimal textural, colorimetric, and antimicrobial properties compared to other formulations. The sensory attributes of WWBs remain unchanged despite CL addition. In conclusion, P0.5 exhibited optimal characteristics associated with better quality and prolonged shelf life.

ABSTRACT

The QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) conditions were optimized for efficient determination of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and European Union (EU) priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for the categories of grains, tuber & starchy vegetables, soy beans and products, fish & seafood, and poultry & meat, including raw materials and their corresponding products. The PAHs were analyzed using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography with temperature-controlled fluorescence detection and gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The established conditions had good accuracy, repeatability, and precision. Environmental pollution and processing methods influence the level of PAHs in samples. The low molecular weight PAHs were present in all raw materials, and processing increased high and low molecular weight PAHs in the products. The excess cancer risk for consumption of PAHs in cooked samples was mostly acceptable; a small number of samples might be of slight concern in certain age groups.

ABSTRACT

Lonicerae japonicae (L. japonicae) flos is a medical and food homology herb. This study investigated the phenolic acid and flavonoid contents in L. japonicae flos water extract solution (LJWES) and the preventive effects of LJWES against liver fibrogenesis via FL83B cells and rats. LJWES contains many polyphenols, such as chlorogenic acid, morin, and epicatechin. LJWES increased cell viability and decreased cytotoxicity in thioacetamide (TAA)-treated FL83B cells (75 mM) (p < .05). LJWES decreased (p < .05) gene expressions of Tnf-α, Tnfr1, Bax, and cytochrome c but upregulated Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl in TAA-treated cells; meanwhile, increased protein levels of P53, cleaved caspase 3, and cleaved caspase 9 in TAA treated cells were downregulated (p < .05) by LJWES supplementation. In vivo, results indicated that TAA treatment increased serum liver damage indices (alanine aminotransferase [ALT] and alkaline phosphatase [ALP]) and cytokines (interleukin-6 and transforming growth factor-ß1) levels and impaired liver antioxidant capacities (increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substance value but decreased catalase/glutathione peroxidase activities) in rats (p < .05) while LJWES supplementation amended (p < .05) them. Liver fibrosis scores, collagen deposition, and alpha-smooth muscle actin deposition in TAA-treated rats were also decreased by LJWES supplementation (p < .05). To sum up, LJWES could be a potential hepatoprotective agent against liver fibrogenesis by enhancing antioxidant ability, downregulating inflammation in livers, and reducing apoptosis in hepatocytes.

ABSTRACT

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a huge threat to ecosystem health. In the manuscript, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the changes in plant biomass and antioxidant indicators under different cadmium pollution levels (0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) of inoculation of plant growth-promoting bacteria ZG7 on sugar beet. The results showed that the accumulation of excess Cd in sugar beet exhibited different symptoms, including reduced biomass (p < 0.05). Compared with the group treated with uninoculated strain ZG7, inoculation of strain ZG7 significantly reduced the toxicity of sugar beet to Cd and enhanced its antioxidant capacity, with no significant differences in root biomass and increases in leaf biomass of 15.71, 5.84, and 74.12 under different Cd concentration treatments (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg), respectively. The root enrichment of Cd was reduced by 49.13, 47.26, and 21.50%, respectively (p < 0.05). The leaf fraction was reduced by 59.35, 29.86, and 30.99%, respectively (p < 0.05). In addition, the enzymatic activities of sucrase, urease, catalase, and neutral phosphatase were significantly enhanced in the soil (p < 0.05). This study helps us to further investigate the mechanism of cadmium toxicity reduction by inoculated microorganisms and provides a theoretical reference for growing plants in cadmium-contaminated agricultural fields.

The combination of microorganisms and phytoremediation is becoming a popular research topic. The selection of suitable plant growth promoting bacteria can not only promote the growth and development of plants and enhance their cadmium resistance, but also improve the soil quality. And the results of this study will be important for growing edible plants and improving soils in cadmium-contaminated areas.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the effect of myricetin (MYR) on renal fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) and common bile duct ligation (CBDL) in mice and its mechanism. The animal experiment has been approved by the Ethics Committee of China Pharmaceutical University (NO: 2022-10-020). Thirty-five ICR mice were divided into control, UUO, UUO+MYR, CBDL and CBDL+MYR groups. H&E and Masson staining were used to detect pathological changes in kidney tissues. Western blot (WB) was used to detect the expression of fibrosis-related proteins in renal tissue, and total superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity detection kit (WST-8) was used to detect the changes of total SOD in renal tissue of CBDL mice. In vitro, HK-2 cells and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1, 10 ng·mL-1) were used to induce fibrotic model, and high glucose (30 mmol·L-1) was used to induce oxidative stress model, and then treated with different concentrations of MYR, WB was used to detect the expression of fibrosis and oxidative stress-related proteins, while NIH/3T3 cells were treated with different concentrations of MYR, and their effects on cell proliferation were detected by 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (Brdu). The results showed that the renal lesions in UUO group and CBDL group were severe, collagen deposition was obvious, the expression of collagen-Ⅰ (COL-Ⅰ), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), fibronectin (FN), vimentin and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) protein was up-regulated, and the activity of SOD enzyme in CBDL group was significantly decreased. MYR partly reversed the above changes after treatment. MYR inhibited the proliferation of NIH/3T3 cells but had no effect on the proliferation of HK-2 cells, and decreased the upregulation of PAI-1, FN and vimentin in HK-2 cells stimulated by TGF-β1. MYR can also up-regulate the down-regulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in HK-2 cells stimulated by high glucose. To sum up, MYR can improve renal fibrosis in vivo and in vitro, probably by inhibiting the proliferation of fibroblasts and activating Nrf2/HO-1 signal pathway to inhibit oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4-related prostate disease (IgG4-RPD) characterized by a high count of IgG4-positive plasma cells has distinctive serological and radiological findings. Here we report a case of a patient who was successfully treated for IgG4-RPD, which manifested as frequent micturition, dysuric, and systemic lymphadenopathy. CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a 33-year-old man who was referred to our hospital because of urinary tract symptoms that had persisted for 4 years. A physical examination revealed systemic lymphadenopathy and blood tests showed hyperglobulinemia with an IgG level of 18.90 g/L and an IgG4 level of 18.40 g/L. Computed tomography (CT) revealed bilateral lacrimal gland, right parotid gland and prostatic enlargement. Based on these findings, IgG4-RD was suspected, and further pathological examination and follow-up results showed expected results. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with IgG4-RPD based on clinical symptoms, pathological examination, therapeutic effects, and follow-up results. He received 50 mg oral prednisolone (the dose was gradually reduced and a low dose was used for long-term maintenance) in combination with cyclophosphamide 1.0 g via an intravenous drip for 6 mo. One year after the treatment was initiated, he was free of urinary or other complaints and his serum IgG4 level normalized. CONCLUSION: In IgG4-RPD with severe urinary tract symptoms, radiological findings should be carefully examined. IgG4-RPD prognosis is good because the disease responds well to glucocorticoids. Furthermore, it is urgent for clinicians and pathologists to improve their understanding of IgG4-RPD.

ABSTRACT

The potency of heteroatom-doping in reshaping optoelectronic properties arises from the distinct electronegativity variations between heteroatoms and carbon atoms. By incorporating two heteroatoms with differing electronegativities (e.g., B = N), not only is the architectural coherence of π-conjugated systems retained, but also dipolar traits are introduced, accompanied by unique intermolecular interactions absent in their all-carbon analogs. Another burgeoning doping strategy, featuring the heteroatom-boron-heteroatom motif (X-B-X, where X = N, O), has captured growing attention. This configuration's coexistence of the boron-heteroatom unit and an isolated heteroatom stimulates mutual modulation in the dipole of the boron-heteroatom unit and the heteroatom's electronegativity. In this Feature article, we present an encompassing survey of XBX-doped π-conjugated systems, elucidating how the integration of the X-B-X unit induces transformative structural and property changes within π-conjugated systems.

ABSTRACT

In plants, alternative splicing is a crucial mechanism for regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, which leads to diverse proteins by generating multiple mature mRNA isoforms and diversify the gene regulation. Due to the complexity and variability of this process, accurate identification of splicing events is a vital step in studying alternative splicing. This article presents the application of alternative splicing algorithms with or without reference genomes in plants, as well as the integration of advanced deep learning techniques for improved detection accuracy. In addition, we also discuss alternative splicing studies in the pan-genomic background and the usefulness of integrated strategies for fully profiling alternative splicing.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: We investigated the impact of traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) on daily living activities and motor function of TSCI patients. Methods: A total of 88 TSCI patients were randomly divided into Group A (N=44) and Group B (N=44). Group A received rehabilitation treatment 7 days after the stabilization of vital signs, and Group B received rehabilitation treatment 30 days after hospitalization. Results: The compliance rate of Group A (93.18%) was higher than that of Group B (72.73%) (χ 2 =6.510, p<.05); The scores of American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in Group A were higher than those in Group B. The self-rating score of anxiety and depression was lower than that of Group B (p<.05). Conclusion: For the rehabilitation treatment of TSCI patients, it is better to choose the intervention after the vital signs are stable to improve patients' ability for daily living activities and motor function.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Previous researches have shown the risk factors of prolonged length of stay (PLOS) in hospitalized older adults, but it is unclear what are the risk factors of PLOS in hospitalized older adults with mild to moderate frailty. Objective: To identify the risk factors of PLOS in hospitalized older adults with mild to moderate frailty. Methods: We recruited adults aged ≥65 years old with mild to moderate frailty admitted to a tertiary medical center in the southern Taiwan from June 2018 to September 2018. Each individual underwent a structural questionnaire interview within 72 h after admission and 72 h after discharge. The data were collected face-to-face, including demographic characteristics, comorbidities, length of stay (LOS), and multiple domains of the comprehensive geriatric assessment. The main outcome was PLOS. Results: Individuals who had two or more drugs, were female, did not have cognitive impairment and had a Geriatric Depression Scale score ≥ 1 had a higher risk of PLOS (probability = 0.81), and these individuals accounted for 29% of the overall study population. Among male individuals younger than 87 years old, those with cognitive impairment had a higher risk of PLOS (probability = 0.76), and among male individuals without cognitive impairment, living alone was associated with a higher risk of PLOS (probability = 0.88). Conclusion: Early detection and management of mood and cognition in older adults, together with comprehensive discharge planning and transition care, may be an important part of reducing LOS in hospitalized older adults with mild to moderate frailty.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We evaluated hyperglycemia-associated mortality in the Taiwanese population by conducting a 10-year retrospective cohort study. METHODS: From 2007 to 2017, all participants, regardless of their age or underlying diseases, were identified at a Health Screening Center in Taiwan. Overall, 114,534 participants were included in the analysis. They were classified into three subgroups according to glycemia and smoking status by combining survival for data analysis. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time, age, and body mass index (BMI) were 8.14 ± 2.22 years, 40.95 ± 12.14 years, and 23.24 ± 3.65 kg/m2, respectively. The cumulative death rate increased from 0.9% in the normal fasting blood glucose(FBG) subgroup to approximately 6% in the diabetes FBG subgroup. After adjusting for age, gender, BMI, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, waist circumference(WC), and smoking status, the hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause, cancer, and heart disease mortality in the diabetes mellitus(DM) subgroup was 1.560, 1.381, and 1.828, respectively.HR was 0.989 in all-cause, 0.940 in cancer, and 1.326 in heart disease in the pre-DM subgroup. CONCLUSION: Being tested for pre-DM is related to a higher risk of death from heart disease in the Taiwanese population at baseline. Therefore, cardiovascular risk must be actively measured among diabetes patients every visit.

ABSTRACT

Background: Guidelines widely recommend thyrotropin suppression to reduce the risk of recurrence in intermediate- and high-risk papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) after total thyroidectomy. However, an insufficient or excessive dosage may result in a number of symptoms/complications especially in older patients. Patients and methods: We constructed a retrospective cohort including 551 PTC patient encounters. Using propensity score matching and logistic regression models, we determined the independent risk factors affecting levothyroxine therapy at different ages. Our outcomes included: expected TSH level and an unexpected TSH level, which was based on the initial thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) goal< 0.1 mIU/L with usual dosage of L-T4 (1.6 µg/kg/day). Results: From our analysis, more than 70% of patients undergoing total thyroidectomy did not achieve the expected TSH level using an empirical medication regimen, and the effect of the drug was affected by age (odds ratio [OR], 1.063; 95% CI, 1.032-1.094), preoperative TSH level (OR, 0.554; 95% CI, 0.436-0.704) and preoperative fT3 level (OR, 0.820; 95% CI, 0.727-0.925). In patients with age < 55 years old, preoperative TSH level (OR, 0.588; 95% CI, 0.459-0.753), and preoperative fT3 level (OR, 0.859; 95% CI, 0.746-0.990) were two independent protective factors, while, in patients with age ≥ 55 years old, only preoperative TSH level (OR, 0.490; 95% CI, 0.278-0.861) was the independent protective factors to achieve expected TSH level. Conclusion: Our retrospective analysis suggested the following significant risk factors of getting TSH suppression in PTC patients: age (≥55 years), lower preoperative TSH and fT3 levels.

ABSTRACT

The incorporation of heteroatoms and/or heptagons as the defects into helicenes expands the variety of chiroptical materials with novel properties. However, it is still challenging to construct novel boron-doped heptagon-containing helicenes with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and narrow full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) values. We report an efficient and scalable synthesis of a quadruple helicene 4Cz-NBN with two nitrogen-boron-nitrogen (NBN) units and a double helicene 4Cz-NBN-P1 bearing two NBN-doped heptagons, the latter could be formed via a two-fold Scholl reaction of the former. The helicenes 4Cz-NBN and 4Cz-NBN-P1 exhibit excellent PLQYs up to 99 % and 65 % with narrow FWHM of 24 nm and 22 nm, respectively. The emission wavelengths are tunable via stepwise titration experiments of 4Cz-NBN-P1 toward fluoride, enabling distinguished circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from green, orange (4Cz-NBN-P1-F1) to yellow (trans/cis-4Cz-NBN-P1-F2) with near-unity PLQYs and broader circular dichroism (CD) ranges. The five structures of the aforementioned four helicenes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. This work provides a novel design strategy for construction of non-benzenoid multiple helicenes exhibiting narrow emissions with superior PLQYs.

ABSTRACT

Heavy metals are considered to be one of the main sources of soil contamination. In this study, three tolerant bacteria were isolated from the heavy metal-contaminated soil in mining area, and immobilized bacteria were constructed using corn straw as the carrier. The combined remediation effect of immobilized bacteria and alfalfa in pot experiments was explored in heavy metal-contaminated soil. Under heavy metal stress, inoculation with immobilized bacteria significantly promoted the growth of alfalfa, in which the dry weights of roots, stems, and leaves increased by 19.8, 6.89, and 14.6%, respectively (P < 0.05). Also, inoculation with immobilized bacteria improved the antioxidant capacity of plants and the activity of soil enzymes and improved soil quality (P < 0.05). Microbial-phytoremediation technology effectively reduced the heavy metal content in the soil, and can restore the soil contaminated by heavy metals. The results will help to further understand the mechanism of microbial inoculation to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals, and provide guidance for the cultivation of forage grasses in heavy metal-contaminated soils.

ABSTRACT

The optimal conditions for simultaneous determination of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and European Union (EU) priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coffee beans and coffee brews were developed. The QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) technology combined with high performance liquid chromatography - temperature-controlled fluorescence detection and gas chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry were used in the investigation. PAHs could be determined in commercially available green coffee beans (possibly caused by environmental contamination), and their PAHs content increased with the degree of roasting. Coffee beans brewed with the coffee machine released more PAHs into their brews than those brewed with the drip bag. The PAHs consumption risk of the brewed coffee samples was not high due to their low PAH level. Nevertheless, the methods of roasting and brewing and the amount of drinking could still be considered to reduce the intake of PAHs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Obesity in laboratory rodents is generally induced by feeding them a high fat diet (HFD). This model does not permit separation of the impact of the HFD from the resultant obesity on metabolic defects such as impaired glucose homeostasis. In Brandt's voles we have previously shown that exposure to long photoperiod (LD: 16L: 8D) induces obesity even when they are fed a low fat diet. We show here that these voles are largely resistant to HFD. This model therefore permits some separation of the effects of HFD and obesity on glucose homeostasis. The objective was therefore to use this model to assess if glucose homeostasis is more related to diet or obesity METHODS: Male voles, which were 35 days old and born in LD, were exposed to SD and a low fat diet for 70 days. We then randomly separated the animals into 4 groups for another 63 days: SL (short day and low fat diet: n = 19) group; SH (short day and high-fat diet, n = 20) group; LL (long day and low-fat diet, n = 20) group; LH (long day and high-fat diet, n = 18) group. Glucose tolerance tests (GTT) were performed after treatment for 56 days, and body compositions of the voles were quantified at the end by dissection. RESULTS: Consistent with our previous work LD voles were more obese than SD voles. Although total body weight was independent of dietary fat content, HFD did have an effect on fat storage. Photoperiod induced obesity had no effect on glucose homeostasis, and the fat content in both the liver and muscle. In contrast, HFD induced adiposity was linked with elevated fat deposition in muscle (but not in liver) and led to impaired glucose tolerance. CONCLUSIONS: The contrasting effects of diet and photoperiod were consistent with the predictions of the 'lipotoxicity hypothesis'. This may contribute to our understanding of why some human individuals are able to be obese yet remain metabolically healthy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli is the leading pathogen responsible for urinary tract infection (UTI) and recurrent UTI (RUTI). Few studies have dealt with the characterization of host and bacteria in RUTI caused by E. coli with genetically identical or different strains. This study aimed to investigate the host and bacterial characteristics of E. coli RUTI based on molecular typing. RESULTS: Patients aged 20 years or above who presented with symptoms of UTI in emergency department or outpatient clinics between August 2009 and December 2010 were enrolled. RUTI was defined as patients had 2 or more infections in 6 months or 3 or more in 12 months during the study period. Host factors (including age, gender, anatomical/functional defect, and immune dysfunction) and bacterial factors (including phylogenicity, virulence genes, and antimicrobial resistance) were included for analysis. There were 41 patients (41%) with 91 episodes of E. coli RUTI with highly related PFGE (HRPFGE) pattern (pattern similarity > 85%) and 58 (59%) patients with 137 episodes of E. coli RUTI with different molecular typing (DMT) pattern, respectively. There was a higher prevalence of phylogenetic group B2 and neuA and usp genes in HRPFGE group if the first episode of RUTI caused by HRPFGE E. coli strains and all episodes of RUTI caused by DMT E. coli strains were included for comparison. The uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) strains in RUTI were more virulent in female gender, age < 20 years, neither anatomical/ functional defect nor immune dysfunction, and phylogenetic group B2. There were correlations among prior antibiotic therapy within 3 months and subsequent antimicrobial resistance in HRPFGE E. coli RUTI. The use of fluoroquinolones was more likely associated with subsequent antimicrobial resistance in most types of antibiotics. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the uropathogens in RUTI were more virulent in genetically highly-related E. coli strains. Higher bacterial virulence in young age group (< 20 years) and patients with neither anatomical/functional defect nor immune dysfunction suggests that virulent UPEC strains are needed for the development of RUTI in healthy populations. Prior antibiotic therapy, especially the fluoroquinolones, within 3 months could induce subsequent antimicrobial resistance in genetically highly-related E. coli RUTI.

ABSTRACT

Chicken-liver hydrolysates (CLHs) have been characterized as performing several biofunctions by our team. This study aimed to investigate if a CLH-based supplement (GBHP01TM) can ameliorate liver fibrogenesis induced by thioacetamide (TAA) treatment. Our results showed that the TAA treatment caused lower body weight gains and enlarged livers, as well as higher serum ALT, AST, and ALP levels (p < 0.05). This liver inflammatory and fibrotic evidence was ameliorated (p < 0.05) by supplementing with GBHP01TM; this partially resulted from its antioxidant abilities, including decreased TBARS values but increased TEAC levels, reduced GSH contents and catalase/GPx activities in the livers of TAA-treated rats (p < 0.05). Additionally, fewer nodules were observed in the appearance of the livers of TAA-treated rats after supplementing with GBHP01TM. Similarly, supplementing GBHP01TM decreased fibrotic scars and the fibrotic score in the livers of TAA-treated rats (p < 0.05). Moreover, the increased hepatic IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α levels after TAA treatment were also alleviated by supplementing with GBHP01TM (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, GBHP01TM could decrease the ratio of LC3B II/LC3B I, but upregulated P62 and Rab7 in the livers of TAA-treated rats (p < 0.05). Taking these results together, the CLH-based supplement (GBHP01TM) can be characterized as a natural agent against liver fibrogenesis.
