ABSTRACT

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) play an important role in natural nitrogen cycle, but are difficult to be enriched in wastewater treatment systems. In this experiment, under ambient temperature and high dissolved oxygen, different types of acyl-homoserine lactones (C6-HSL, C8-HSL, C10-HSL, C14-HSL and 3-oxo-C14-HSL) were added to five wastewater nitrification systems to achieve AOA enrichment. Results showed that AOA couldn't be detected in the blank group without the addition of signaling molecules, while the AOA could be detected in all the reactors with the addition. The enrichment effect of AOA was not obvious with added 100 or 200 nmol/L signaling molecules, while the enrichment effect was both obvious with added C8-HSL of 400 nmol/L and C10-HSL of 800 nmol/L. And relative abundance of AOA increased from undetected in the control group to 1.10 % and 0.96 %, respectively. The exogenous signaling molecules may provide new view for AOA enrichment in wastewater treatment systems.

ABSTRACT

In order to explore the clinical effect of color Doppler ultrasonography in the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis, a method for the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis by color Doppler ultrasonography was proposed. From November 2019 to November 2020, 90 patients with subacute thyroiditis in our hospital were selected as the experimental group; 90 healthy people were selected as the control group during the same period. Both groups were diagnosed by color Doppler ultrasonography and compared. The experimental results showed that patients with subacute thyroiditis showed mild to moderate enlargement of the involved thyroid gland, and local or diffuse inhomogeneous hypoechoic areas may appear in bilateral or unilateral thyroid glands: irregular edges, unclear boundaries, no "ball feel," mottled changes, and accompanied by tenderness. The blood flow signal around the hypoechoic area is rich, and the internal blood flow signal is less. There was no significant increase in the blood flow velocity of the superior thyroid artery on the affected side. Color Doppler ultrasound not only is simple, economical, and non-invasive but also has a good diagnostic accuracy for subacute thyroiditis, which can provide an important basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment and is worthy of popularization and application.

ABSTRACT

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNA molecules containing only 20-22 nucleotides. MiRNAs play a role in gene silencing and translation suppression by targeting and binding to mRNA. Proper control of miRNA expression is very important for maintaining a normal physiological environment because miRNAs can affect most cellular pathways, including cell cycle checkpoint, cell proliferation, and apoptosis pathways, and have a wide range of target genes. With these properties, miRNAs can modulate multiple signalling pathways involved in cancer development, such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration pathways. MiRNAs that activate or inhibit the molecular pathway related to tumour angiogenesis are common topics of research. Angiogenesis promotes tumorigenesis and metastasis by providing oxygen and diffusible nutrients and releasing proangiogenic factors and is one of the hallmarks of tumour progression. CRC is one of the most common tumours, and metastasis has always been a difficult issue in its treatment. Although comprehensive treatments, such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy, have prolonged the survival of CRC patients, the overall response is not optimistic. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find new therapeutic targets to improve CRC treatment. In a series of recent reports, miRNAs have been shown to bidirectionally regulate angiogenesis in colorectal cancer. Many miRNAs can directly act on VEGF or inhibit angiogenesis through other pathways (HIF-1a, PI3K/AKT, etc.), while some miRNAs, specifically many exosomal miRNAs, are capable of promoting CRC angiogenesis. Understanding the mechanism of action of miRNAs in angiogenesis is of great significance for finding new targets for the treatment of tumour angiogenesis. Deciphering the exact role of specific miRNAs in angiogenesis is a challenge due to the high complexity of their actions. Here, we describe the latest advances in the understanding of miRNAs and their corresponding targets that play a role in CRC angiogenesis and discuss possible miRNA-based therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

Multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMTs) refer to two or more primary malignant neoplasms that simultaneously or successively occur in one or more organs in the same individual. Cervical sarcoma concomitant with endometrial carcinoma is rare. A 46-year-old woman was admitted because of increased menstrual volume for 4 years and irregular vaginal bleeding with discharge for 6 months. The diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma at stage II was made on the basis of results of ultrasound, pelvic magnetic resonance imaging, and hysteroscopic curettage. Extensive total abdominal hysterectomy + bilateral adnexectomy + bilateral ovarian arteriovenous high ligation + pelvic adhesion separation + pelvic lymphadenectomy +abdominal aortic lymphadenectomy via the abdomen were performed. Postoperative diagnosis of cervical sarcomas with endometrial carcinoma in stage IIIC1 was made according to the results of pathology and immunohistochemistry. Six cycles of cisplatin-epirubicin-isocyclophosphamide treatment were provided after the operation. Most clinical manifestations of cervical sarcomas are abnormal vaginal bleeding. Use of preoperative imaging and hysteroscopy is difficult for diagnosing cervical sarcomas, and postoperative pathological examinations and immunohistochemical diagnosis are mainly used instead. The possibility of MPMTs should be considered for endometrial carcinoma, especially if the cervical lesion is larger than that of the uterine cavity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Expression of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) has been observed, but their prognostic role in advanced cancers remains uncertain. We conducted a meta-analysis to establish the prognostic effect of HIFs and to better guide treatment planning for advanced cancers. METHODS: Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was also performed. The clinical outcomes included overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), progression-free survival (PFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), relapse/recurrence-free survival (RFS), and metastasis-free survival (MFS) in patients with advanced tumors according to multivariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 31 studies including 3453 cases who received chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or chemoradiotherapy were identified. Pooled analyses revealed that HIF-1α expression was correlated with worse OS (HR = 1.61, p < 0.001), DFS (HR = 1.61, p < 0.001), PFS (HR = 1.49, p = 0.01), CSS (HR = 1.65, p = 0.056), RFS (HR = 2.10, p = 0.015), or MFS (HR = 2.36, p = 0.002) in advanced cancers. HIF-1α expression was linked to shorter OS in the digestive tract, epithelial ovarian, breast, non-small cell lung, and clear cell renal cell carcinomas. Subgroup analysis by study region showed that HIF-1α expression was correlated with poor OS in Europeans and Asians, while an analysis by histologic subtypes found that HIF-1α expression was not associated with OS in squamous cell carcinoma. No relationship was found between HIF-2α expression and OS, DFS, PFS, or CSS. CONCLUSIONS: Targeting HIF-1α may be a useful therapeutic approach to improve survival for advanced cancer patients. Based on TSA, more randomized controlled trials are strongly suggested.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Ovarian leiomyoma is a rare ovarian tumor that occurs in 20-65 year-old women, and is mostly misdiagnosed as malignant tumor. In most reports on this type of tumor, ovarian myoma has a benign histology. Herein,we describe a case of ovarian atypical leiomyoma. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient is a 58-year-old woman. At the age of 40 years old, the patient underwent hysterectomy due to "hysteromyoma" and secondary anemia. The patient was admitted to our hospital due to palpation of lower abdominal mass and abdominal distention. DIAGNOSES: A mass was revealed at the left uterine appendage by pelvic ultrasound and CT.Pathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of the left ovarian atypical leiomyoma. INTERVENTIONS: Pelvic cavity resection and right adnexectomy were performed during laparotomy for the patient. OUTCOMES: Without radiotherapy or chemotherapy, there were no signs of tumor recurrence in a 9-month follow-up period. LESSONS: When a solid mass appears in ovarian tissues, ovarian leiomyoma should be considered. Patients with this type of tumor are mostly asymptomatic. Preoperative diagnosis was difficult, intraoperative frozen section would be helpful for determining the scope of the surgery, and the correct diagnosis was made by identifying the properties of smooth muscles through postoperative pathology and immunohistochemistry.
