ABSTRACT

Shield tunneling method is widely used in urban metro construction. The construction stability is closely related to the engineering geological conditions. Sandy pebble strata have a loose structure and low cohesion, resulting in great engineering-induced stratigraphic disturbance. Meanwhile, the high water-abundance and strong permeability are extremely detrimental to construction safety. It is of great significance to evaluate the dangerousness of shield tunneling in water-rich pebble strata with large particle size. In this paper, risk assessment of engineering practice is carried through with Chengdu metro project in China as a case study. Referring to the special engineering situations and assessment workload, seven evaluation indices, including compressive strength of pebble layer, boulder volume content, permeability coefficient, groundwater depth, grouting pressure, tunneling speed and tunnel buried depth are selected to establish an evaluation system. A complete risk assessment framework is established based on the cloud model, AHP and entropy weight method. Further, the measured surface settlement is taken as the risk degree characterization to verify the results. This study can provide reference for method selection and evaluation system establishment in the risk assessment of shield tunnel construction in water-rich sandy pebble strata, and contribute to proposing safety management in similar engineering projects.

ABSTRACT

The non-linear relationship between provincial economic growth and carbon emissions is investigated by using panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) models. The research indicates that, on the condition of separately taking Gross Domestic Product per capita (GDPpc), energy structure (Es), and urbanisation level (Ul) as transition variables, three models all reject the null hypothesis of a linear relationship, i.e., a non-linear relationship exists. The results show that the three models all contain only one transition function but different numbers of location parameters. The model taking GDPpc as the transition variable has two location parameters, while the other two models separately considering Es and Ul as the transition variables both contain one location parameter. The three models applied in the study all favourably describe the non-linear relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions in China. It also can be seen that the conversion rate of the influence of Ul on per capita CO2 emissions is significantly higher than those of GDPpc and Es on per capita CO2 emissions.

ABSTRACT

Fossil blister pearls attached to the shells of an Anodonta mollusk from China, early Early Pleistocene, are reported here for the first time. The pearls were investigated in detail using a variety of methods. Micro-CT scanning of the fossil pearls was carried out to discover the inner structure and the pearl nucleus. Using CTAn software, changes in the gray levels of the biggest pearl, which reflect the changing density of the material, were investigated. The results provide us with some clues on how these pearls were formed. Sand grains, shell debris or material with a similar density could have stimulated the development of these pearls. X-ray diffraction analysis of one fossil pearl and the shell to which it was attached reveals that only aragonite exists in both samples. The internal structures of our fossil shells and pearls were investigated using a Scanning Electron Microscope. These investigations throw some light on pearl development in the past.
