ABSTRACT

Striae distensae occur on the abdomen and/or breast in 90 percent of all pregnant women and are the result of extrinsic and intrinsic factors. This study investigated the response of pregnancy-related abdominal striae to treatment with tretinoin cream (0.025 percent) applied daily for seven months. In this study, eleven subjects were randomly assigned to tretinoin or placebo treatment groups. Before and after photographs were evaluated by a standardized system. There was no difference or improvement in the treated group compared with control subjects. Tretinoin 0.025 percent cream was ineffective in improving striae distensae in these subjects.

ABSTRACT

Two women with long histories of angiolymphoid hyperplasia involving the left external ear were successfully treated with carbon dioxide laser vaporization. In one of these patients a previous treatment with argon laser photocoagulation had proved unsuccessful. Carbon dioxide laser vaporization can be advantageous in the treatment of angiolymphoid hyperplasia, especially when the patient is not a good candidate for cold steel surgery or when the disease process involves confined or convoluted structures such as those on the external ear.

ABSTRACT

Porokeratosis plantaris, palmaris, et disseminata is a unique clinical entity characterized by the familial occurrence of multiple porokeratoses predominantly on the palms and soles but also on both sun-exposed and non-sun-exposed areas of the body. Since its original description in 1971 by Guss and colleagues, there has been only one other report of this syndrome. We have discovered a third family with this disorder and have used isotretinoin successfully to control the condition in one of the family's symptomatic members.

ABSTRACT

Aeromonas hydrophila septicemia complicated by a generalized cutaneous vasculitis developed in a patient receiving home hemodialysis therapy. Because the Aeromonas organism is found in many natural water sources, the possibility that this patient's hemodialysis system became contaminated was explored. Although cultures from the patient's home environment showed no Aeromonas sp, the possibility still exists that the site of contamination was in the dialysis system.
