ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: With the Virtual Reality (VR) technique, 3D movies can be made for refugee children for pre-operative stress. The study aims to reveal the oxidative responses of the VR technique in pre-operative anxiety in elective surgery in children aged 5-12 years. METHODS: The Study was designed according to the CONSORT checklist with a randomized controlled parallel design. The whole sample (n = 23), VR experimental group (n = 12), and control group (n = 11) were determined according to the total count method prospectively in 6 months. Oxidative stress parameters (Cortisol, Malondialdehyde, Nitric oxide, Glutathione) were measured in blood samples from the first hospitalization (beginning) and before the intervention (pre-operative) in the experimental and control groups. FINDINGS: MDA, NO, and cortisol levels (p < 0.05), which indicate the stress level, are high in all groups. In pre-operative measurements, oxidative parameters were lower in the VR experimental group than in the control group. At the same time, the anti-stress antioxidant factor Glutathione was higher in the VR experimental group in pre-operative measurements. DISCUSSION: The application of 3D film as a VR technique reduces stress parameters in pre-operative stress, and its antioxidant system activating effect has been determined. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: It can be applied to refugee child groups for pre-operative stress by shooting 3D movies in different languages.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of booster vaccination of adults with measles-mumps-rubella in the COVID-19 infection rates. METHODS: In order to investigate this hypothesis, we tested COVID-19 positivity rate through PCR assay on the participants (n=245; male), who had to share the same student accommodation together with the same dining hall to provide governmental service. Participants were divided into two groups based on their booster vaccination status with measles-mumps-rubella: the non-vaccinated group (n=207) and the vaccinated group (n=38). The rate of COVID-19 seropositivity, age, body mass index (BMI), active smoking and presence of comorbidity were also measured and recorded. RESULTS: All of the participants were healthy, and age distribution, comorbidity rates, active smoking status and BMI did not vary significantly among the two groups (p=0.305, p=0.594, p=0.280, and p=0.922, respectively). About 36.7% (n=90) of the participants were found to be COVID-19 positive by PCR among which the non-vaccinated cases had higher rates of COVID-19 seropositivity than the vaccinated cases (40.6% vs 15.8%) (OR=3.6, 95%CI: 1.5-9.0, p=0.004). CONCLUSION: Based on these results, we cautiously predict that immunity produced by MMR vaccination boosters may provide some degree of protection against COVID-19 in the adult population.

ABSTRACT

The number and proportion of people more than 65 years old in the population are increasing with the rise in life expectancy. This study was designed to investigate the otolarygologic needs and visits of geriatric patients. We conducted a retrospective study that included all patients ≥65 years of age who visited the otolaryngology department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during 1 year. Age, gender, main complaint, and clinical diagnosis were noted on a chart and analyzed. In 2012, a total of 19,875 patients attended the otolaryngology department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., of whom 418 (2.1%) were aged ≥65 years. The most common complaints were ear and hearing disorders (24.2%), epistaxis(15.3%), balance disorders (15.1%), pharyngotonsillar pathologies (14.8%), and head and facial trauma (9.6%). This study shows that the changing patient population will change the type and frequencies of pathologies seen in general otolaryngology practices. Geriatric patients need a targeted approach to their diseases because they have special issues unique to their population.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to identify factors affecting vaccination against influenza among health professionals. METHODS: We used a multi-centre cross-sectional design to conduct an online self-administered questionnaire with physicians and nurses at state and foundation university hospitals in the south-east of Turkey, between 1 January 2015 and 1 February 2015. The five participating hospitals provided staff email address lists filtered for physicians and nurses. The questionnaire comprised multiple choice questions covering demographic data, knowledge sources, and Likert-type items on factors affecting vaccination against influenza. The target response rate was 20 %. RESULTS: In total, 642 (22 %) of 2870 health professionals (1220 physicians and 1650 nurses) responded to the questionnaire. Participants' mean age was 29.6 ± 9.2 years (range 17-62 years); 177 (28.2 %) were physicians and 448 (71.3 %) were nurses. The rate of regular vaccination was 9.2 % (15.2 % for physicians and 8.2 % for nurses). Increasing age, longer work duration in health services, being male, being a physician, working in an internal medicine department, having a chronic disease, and living with a person over 65 years old significantly increased vaccination compliance (p < 0.05). We found differences between vaccine compliant and non-compliant groups for expected benefit from vaccination, social influences, and personal efficacy (p < 0.05). Univariate analysis showed differences between the groups in perceptions of personal risks, side effects, and efficacy of the vaccine (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis found that important factors influencing vaccination behavior were work place, colleagues' opinions, having a chronic disease, belief that vaccination was effective, and belief that flu can be prevented by natural ways. CONCLUSION: Numerous factors influence health professionals' decisions about influenza vaccination. Strategies to increase the ratio of vaccination among physicians and nurses should consider all of these factors to increase the likelihood of success.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate resistant microorganisms in nasal mucosa of children with Familial Mediterranean Fever. METHODS: The study was conducted from March to May 2013 at Mustafa Kemal University, Turkey, and comprised children with Familial Mediterranean Fever and healthy controls. All subjects had no history of antibiotic or local and/or systemic steroid use within the preceding 2 weeks. Nasal swab samples were obtained from all the subjects. Strain identification was done by using standard methods. SPSS 13 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Of the 151 subjects in the study, 73 (48.34%) were cases and 78 (51.65%) were controls. Among the cases, there were 26(35.6%) girls, while among the controls, there were 40(51.3%) girls (p=0.052). The mean age of the cases was 7.78 ± 3.34 years (range: 3-15 years), while it was 8.15 ± 2.71 years (range: 3-16) among the controls (p = 0.208). Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococcus and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus were isolated in both the groups. The growth rate of resistant bacteria was 63% (n = 46) in the cases, in the controls (p = 0.003; odds ratio [OR]: 2.7; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.4-5.2). Among the controls, history of hospitalisation increased the risk for the presence of resistant bacteria by 7.7 fold (OR: 7.7; 95% CI: 1.4-40.4). CONCLUSION: Higher rates of resistant bacteria showed that they were at risk of comorbidities related to antibiotic resistance.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this prospective study is to investigate whether the possible stenosis due to anatomic variations of labyrinthine segment (LS), tympanic segment (TS) and mastoid segment (MS) of the facial canal in the temporal bone is a predisposing factor in the development of paralysis. 22 patients with idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis (IPFP) were included in the study. Multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) with 64 detectors was used for temporal bone imaging of the patients. Reconstruction images in axial, coronal and sagittal planes were created in workstation computers from the captured images. The diameters and lengths of LS, TS and MS of the facial canal were measured. The mean values of LD, ND and SL of LS were 1.31 ± 0.39, 0.91 ± 0.27, 4.17 ± 0.48 in patient group and 1.26 ± 0.29, 0.95 ± 0.21, 4.60 ± 1.36 in control group, respectively. The mean values of LD, ND and SL of TS were 1.11 ± 0.22, 0.90 ± 0.14, 12.63 ± 1.47 in patient group and 1.17 ± 0.23, 0.85 ± 0.24, 12.10 ± 1.79 in control group, respectively. The mean values of LD, ND and SL of MS were 1.80 ± 0.30, 1.44 ± 0.29 vs. 14.3 ± 1.90 in patient group 1.74 ± 0.38, 1.40 ± 0.29, 14.15 ± 2.16 in control group, respectively. The measurements of the parameters of all three segments in patient group and control group were similar. Similar results between patient and control group were obtained in this study investigating the effect of stenosis in facial canal in the development of IPFP.

BACKGROUND: This study was intended to report our recent experience of bladder injuries due to gunshots in the Syrian conflict and review the literature regarding diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Twenty-two cases with abdominal and inguinal firearm wounds and bladder ruptures sustained in the Syrian conflict were reported. Age, mechanism/location of damage, associated injuries, Revised Trauma Score (RTS), Injury Severity Score (ISS), Trauma Injury Severity Score (TRISS), and complications were analyzed. The severity of the bladder injuries was classified according to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Organ Injury Scaling (AAST-OIS grade ?II database).The type of the bladder rupture was defined according to the classification System for Bladder Injury Based on Findings at CT Cystography. RESULTS: The mean age was 26 years (range, 18-36). The mean ISS was 22 (10-57), mean TRISS was 0.64 (0.004-0.95), and mean RTS was 6.97 (3.30-7.84). In the mortality group, the mean ISS, TRISS, and RTS were 48 (36-57), 0.016 (0.004-0.090), and 4.10 (3.30-4.92), respectively; whereas, the mean ISS, TRISS, and RTS were found as 21 (10-26), 0.64 (0.49-0.95), and 7.24 (5.65-7.84), respectively in the survival group (P=0.06). CT-cystography showed seventeen type 2, three type 4, and two type 5 bladder injuries. According to AAST-OIS, there were nine grade IV, six grade III, five grade II, and two grade V injuries. CONCLUSION: In war settings, when injuries are often severe and multiple surgical exploration and closure are mandatory, mortality risk is associated with high ISS and low TRISS and RTS values.

Mental health and health related quality of life is commonly affected in patients with chronic problems and their caregivers. In the present study, it was aimed to assess depression and anxiety in patients with beta thalassemia major (BTM) and in their caregivers; and to evaluate effects of these disorders on quality of life. The study was carried out in a district Hereditary Hemoglobinopathy Center and included 88 patients with BTM and 63 of their caregivers. All subjects were assessed using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) by a trained psychiatry resident via face-to-face interview. The BDI scores were 17 or above in 20.5% of the patients with BTM and 28.6% of their caregivers (P = 0.248). Of the patients with BTM, there were mild anxiety symptoms in 19.3%, while moderate and severe anxiety symptoms in 14.8% and 4.5%, respectively. Anxiety levels were similar between the patients with BTM and their caregivers (P = 0.878). It was found that BDI and BAI scores were negatively correlated to scores of physical health and mental health components of SF-36 in patients with BTM and their caregivers. In linear regression analysis, it was seen that depression affected physical and mental health of the patients with BTM and their caregivers regardless from anxiety. BTM leads an increase in the frequency of depression and anxiety in both patients and their caregivers, and affects negatively physical and mental components of quality of life.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important factors during tumorigenesis by affecting posttranscriptional gene expression. miRNA 204 (miR-204) is a miRNA frequently investigated in different types of cancers. According to literature, autophagy has dual roles in cancer, acting as both a tumor suppressor and cell survival agent. Also, the current data suggests that autophagy is activated in human colorectal cancer cells and enhances the aggressiveness of human colorectal cancer cells. So, our aim is to investigate potential effect of miR-204-5p on colorectal cancer by associating its expression with autophagy-related targets of miR-204-5p. This is the first miRNA study conducted on patients with colorectal cancer and healthy subjects and also to search the relation of miR-204-5p with clinicopathological factors and survival. Sixty-six patients with colorectal cancer and healthy subjects without any known chronic disease were enrolled into our study. Total miRNA was isolated from paraffin-embedded tissues of all patients' cancerous and normal tissues, and healthy subjects. cDNAs were obtained from this miRNAs by reverse transcriptase method, and miR-204-5p relative expression levels were detected by qRT-PCR method. Patients were divided into two groups according to median relative expression levels of miR-204-5p, as low- and high-expression group. Relation of miR-204-5p with clinicopathological factors and overall survival was also investigated. Medians of miR-204-5p relative expression levels in cancerous and normal tissues of patients were found as 0.00235 and 0.00376, respectively. The difference between two groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.11). Nonetheless, median of miR-204-5p relative expression levels in healthy subjects were found as 0.00135, and the difference between patient with cancer and healthy subjects and between normal tissues of patients and healthy subjects were statistically significant (p = 0.021 and p = 0.0005, respectively). There were 32 patients (48.5 %) showing high expression and 34 patients (51.5 %) showing low expression according to miR-204-5p relative expression levels. There were no statistically significant relation between clinicopathologic features and miR-204-5p relative expression levels. We also investigated the relation between miR-204-5p relative expression levels and overall survival, and no statistically significant relation was found between them (p = 0.462). The absence of any significant difference between tumor and non-tumor samples, low sample size, and performance at just one center are the limitations of our study. In opposition to literature, miR-204-5p is overexpressed in colorectal cancer patients as compared with healthy subjects and this situation is not associated with clinicopathological factors and overall survival. This may be explained by the fact that miR-204-5p increases in colorectal cancer cases in order to inhibit increased activity of LC3B-II in autophagy and Bcl2 against apoptosis posttranscriptionally and to take role as tumor suppressor.

Background and objectives: The induction and inhibition of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes by antiepileptic drugs lead to changes in the clearance of anesthetic drugs eliminated via hepatic metabolism. We investigated the duration of the sedation and additional anesthetic needs during magnetic resonance imaging in epileptic children receiving antiepileptic drugs that cause either enzyme induction or inhibition. Methods: In American Society of Anesthesiology I–II, 120 children aged 3–10 years were included. Group 1: children using antiepileptic drugs that cause cytochrome P450 enzyme induction; Group 2: those using antiepileptic drugs that cause inhibition; and Group 3: those that did not use antiepileptic drugs. Sedation was induced with the use of 0.05 mg kg−1 midazolam and 1 mg kg−1 propofol. An additional 0.05 mg kg−1 of midazolam and rescue propofol (0.5 mg kg−1) were administered and repeated to maintain sedation. The duration of sedation and the additional sedation needed were compared. Results: The duration of the initial dose was significantly shorter in Group I compared with groups II and III (p = 0.001, p = 0.003, respectively). It was significantly longer in Group II compared with groups I and III (p = 0.001, p = 0.029, respectively). The additional midazolam needed for adequate sedation was increased in Group I when compared with groups II and III (p = 0.010, p = 0.001, respectively). In addition, the rescue propofol dose was significantly higher only in Group I when compared with Group III (p = 0.002). Conclusion: In epileptic children, the response variability to the initial sedative agents during the magnetic resonance imaging procedure resulting from the inhibition or induction of the cytochrome P450 isoenzymes by the antiepileptic drugs mandated the titration of anesthetic agents. .


Justificativa e objetivos: A indução e a inibição das isoenzimas do citocromo P450 pelos medicamentos antiepilépticos levam a alterações na depuração de medicamentos anestésicos eliminados pelo metabolismo hepático. Investigamos a duração da sedação e a necessidade adicional de anestésicos durante a ressonância magnética em crianças epilépticas que receberam antiepilépticos que causam a indução ou a inibição de enzimas. Métodos: Foram incluídas no estudo 120 crianças, estado físico ASA I-II, entre 3-10 anos. Grupo 1: em uso de antiepilépticos que causam a indução de enzimas do citocromo P450; Grupo 2: em uso de antiepilépticos que causam a inibição de enzimas do citocromo P450; e Grupo 3: que não usavam antiepilépticos. A sedação foi induzida com midazolam (0,05 mg kg−1) e propofol (1 mg kg−1). Um adicional de 0,05 mg kg−1 de midazolam e resgate com 0,5 mg kg−1 de propofol foram administrados e repetidos para manter a sedação. A duração da sedação e a sedação adicional necessária foram comparadas. Resultados: A duração da dose inicial foi significativamente menor no Grupo I em comparação com os grupos II e III (p = 0,001, p = 0,003, respectivamente) e significativamente maior no Grupo II em comparação com os grupos I e III (p = 0,001, p = 0,029, respectivamente). Justificación y objetivos: La inducción e inhibición de las isoenzimas del citocromo P450 por los medicamentos antiepilépticos conllevan alteraciones en la depuración de medicamentos anestésicos eliminados por el metabolismo hepático. Investigamos la duración de la sedación y la necesidad adicional de anestésicos durante la resonancia magnética en niños epilépticos que reciben antiepilépticos que causan la inducción o inhibición de enzimas. Métodos: Ciento veinte niños, estado físico ASA I-II, con edades entre los 3 y los 10 años, fueron incluidos en el estudio. Grupo i: niños en tratamiento con antiepilépticos que causan la inducción de enzimas del citocromo P450; grupo ii: niños en tratamiento con antiepilépticos que causan la inhibición; y grupo iii: niños que no estaban bajo en tratamiento con antiepilépticos. La sedación fue inducida con midazolam (0,05 mg/kg−1) y propofol (1 mg/kg−1). Se administró una dosis adicional de 0,05 mg/kg−1 de midazolam y una de rescate con 0,5 mg/kg−1 de propofol y fueron repetidas para mantener la sedación. Se compararon la duración de la sedación y la sedación adicional necesaria. OBJECTIVE: To assess the thickness of the retinal nerve fibril layer (RNFL) in cases with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 40 AS patients who had no history of acute and/or previous uveitis and 50 healthy controls. After detailed ocular examination, the thickness of the peripapillary RNFL, the macula, and the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layers (GCIPL) were measured by spectral domain optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The correlation between the duration of the disease and the thickness of the RNFL, the macula, and the GCIPL were analyzed in the patients who had AS. These patients were then placed into 2 groups according to their BASDAI (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index) score: patients with BASDAI score <4 and those with BASDAI score ≥4. The correlations between the BASDAI score and the mean GCIPL and temporal RNFL thickness were evaluated. RESULTS: No significant difference was detected in the RNFL thickness of the AS patients and that of the controls (p = 0.407). Nor was any significant difference detected in the GCIPL thickness of the AS and the control groups (p = 0.091). In addition, no significant difference was found in the macular thickness when the AS group was compared to the control group (p = 0.139). However, a negative correlation was detected between the duration of the disease and the thickness of the temporal quadrant RNFLs (r = -0.334; p = 0.035). The temporal quadrant RNFL thickness and the mean thickness of the GCPIL were significantly thinner in the AS patients with BASDAI score ≥4 (p = 0.034 and p = 0.025, respectively). Also, the BASDAI score were negatively correlated to the temporal quadrant RNFL and GCIPL thickness (r = -0.332; p = 0.036 and r = -0.348; p = 0.028, respectively). CONCLUSION: RNFL thickness and GCIPL thickness of ankylosing spondylitis may be affected by the severity and duration of the disease.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The induction and inhibition of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes by antiepileptic drugs lead to changes in the clearance of anesthetic drugs eliminated via hepatic metabolism. We investigated the duration of the sedation and additional anesthetic needs during magnetic resonance imaging in epileptic children receiving antiepileptic drugs that cause either enzyme induction or inhibition. METHODS: In American Society of Anesthesiology I-II, 120 children aged 3-10 years were included. Group 1: children using antiepileptic drugs that cause cytochrome P450 enzyme induction; Group 2: those using antiepileptic drugs that cause inhibition; and Group 3: those that did not use antiepileptic drugs. Sedation was induced with the use of 0.05 mg kg(-1) midazolam and 1 mg kg(-1) propofol. An additional 0.05 mg kg(-1) of midazolam and rescue propofol (0.5 mg kg(-1)) were administered and repeated to maintain sedation. The duration of sedation and the additional sedation needed were compared. RESULTS: The duration of the initial dose was significantly shorter in Group I compared with groups II and III (p = 0.001, p = 0.003, respectively). It was significantly longer in Group II compared with groups I and III (p = 0.001, p = 0.029, respectively). The additional midazolam needed for adequate sedation was increased in Group I when compared with groups II and III (p = 0.010, p = 0.001, respectively). In addition, the rescue propofol dose was significantly higher only in Group I when compared with Group III (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: In epileptic children, the response variability to the initial sedative agents during the magnetic resonance imaging procedure resulting from the inhibition or induction of the cytochrome P450 isoenzymes by the antiepileptic drugs mandated the titration of anesthetic agents.

OBJECTIVE: Platelets have an important role in atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis. Cardiovascular complication prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) may be associated with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and mean platelet volume (MPV). The aim of the study was to investigate if platelets were activated in diabetes and its associated vascular complications by measuring the MPV in the diabetics compared to the non-diabetics, and to determine the correlation of MPV with fasting serum glucose (FSG), HbA1c and duration of diabetes in the diabetic patients, respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study carried out in 65 patients with type 2 DM and 40 non-diabetic subjects. In addition to non-diabetic patients, all diabetic patients were divided into two groups according to their HbA1c levels: group A consisted of patients with HbA1c levels ≤7% and group B consisted of patients with HbA1c levels >7%. RESULTS: MPV was significantly higher in Group B as compared to both non-diabetics and Group A. MPV had a high positive correlation with HbA1c and FSG, as with diabetes duration. It is found that MPV was increased in type 2 DM. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested an association between MPV and HbA1c. Therefore, MPV would be a beneficial prognostic marker of cardio-vascular complications in patients with type 2 DM.

Age-related legal problems are especially common in underdeveloped parts of Turkey. In terms of civil and criminal law, the ages from 13 years to 18 years are critical in our country. Estimation of age is a very significant in aspect of accordance with laws. The aims of this study were to evaluate the applicability and accuracy of the Demirjian technique for assessing southern Turkish children; to analyze the sexual dimorphism of dental age in the studied groups; and to define the relationship between the dental age and the degree of mineralization in mandibular permanent tooth in southern Turkish children. This study was performed using panoramic radiographs from 932 healthy southern Turkish children, 444 girls and 488 boys aged between 4 and 18 years. Statistical evaluations were performed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 13.0 software. The mean difference between dental and chronological age was calculated for each age and sex group. The paired t-test was used to compare all data. The chi-square test was used for between-group comparisons of categorical variables. Continuous variables were tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Relationships between continuous variables were examined using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The same observer re-examined 700 teeth three months after the first examination. The results were evaluated with the intraclass correlation test and both measurements were statistically significantly similar with each other(R = 0.982, p = 0.0001). .Dental age (DA) and chronological age (CA) were consistent for boys in the 16-16.9 age group and for girls in the 9-9.9 and 15-15.9 age groups. From this study, we can conclude that dental age varies across ethnic populations. Additionally, dental maturation varies across different regions of the same country. Because Demirjian's standards are not suitable for all age groups of southern Turkish children, a new table is necessary for evaluating this population. Future studies using multi-ethnic population data are needed to establish the international applicability of Demirjian's method.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) is an important indicator of platelet activation. It is known that MPV increases in patients with coronory artery disease, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Our aim was to measure the MPV in lean patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. METHODS: The present study was designed to examine the platelet function by measuring MPV in non-obese women with PCOS. A total of 50 outpatients with PCOS were included. The control group consisted of 50 healthy subjects. Serum platelet, MPV, and white blood cell (WBC) levels were compared and evaluated retrospectively in all participants. These values were compared by statistical analysis. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant difference in between groups regarding MPV (p═0.357), WBC (p═0,414) and platelet (p═0,666). CONCLUSION: There are studies implying MPV increase in PCOS patients, in our patients MPV levels did not correlate with PCOS except for patients with obesity. We think that PCOS itself has no effect on MPV levels and obesity changes MPV levels.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors concerning the transmission routes of an H1N1 pandemic and the protective measures of health professionals at a university hospital in Turkey. METHODOLOGY: A stratified systematic sampling method was used to select the sample size of the study group. A total of 22 professors, 29 researchers, and 26 nurses were included in the study. RESULTS: The mean scores of the individuals were 8.4±2.5 (over 20) for knowledge about H1N1 transmission, 27.6±4.0 (over 60) for knowledge about protection against H1N1, 25.8±4.2 (over 45) for correct or appropriate attitudes, and 33.6±8.9 (over 60) for correct behaviors. A negative correlation between total knowledge and behavior was found (p < 0.001, r = -0.543). CONCLUSIONS: In epidemics, standard protection measures should be known and applied. Regarding this topic, the web page of the Ministry of Health comes to the forefront as a reliable source of information in addition to scientific explanations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment results of the application of nitric oxide (NO) in the form of topical glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (LE). METHODS: The study included 40 patients with LE randomized into 2 equal groups. Selection criteria included the presence of pain, tenderness, and positive pain stimulating maneuvers. Glyceryl trinitrate patches were applied to the area of maximal tenderness once a day in the treatment group and placebo patches in the control group. Outcomes in terms of pain relief was assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) and were evaluated according to the criteria of Verhaar et al. Excellent or good results were considered successful. Differences in VAS scores between the two groups were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U-test and the chi-square test was used to investigate distributions of categorical variables (sex, affected side) and good and excellent results among groups. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in any of the baseline clinical parameters between groups. At the 3rd week follow-up, there were statistically significant differences in the pain measured using VAS between groups (mean VAS score of the control and treatment groups were 6.45 and 3.15, respectively) (p=0.001). Patients in the GTN group and control group had lower VAS pain scores and reduced elbow pain at 3 weeks (3.15 vs 8.05 in the GTN and 6.45 vs 8.80 in the control group). In the control group, no patient had excellent or good results while 18 (90%) patients in treatment group reported successful treatment. There was statistically significant difference in the VAS measured at 6 months between groups (mean VAS score of the control and treatment groups were 4.85 and 0.70, respectively) (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: The administration of NO directly over an area of tendinopathy through a GTN patch reduces pain and other symptoms in chronic LE.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to ascertain the effect of gender and cultural habits on hip, knee and ankle range of motion (ROM) and to determine the differences between the ROM of right and left side symmetric joints of the lower extremities. METHODS: The study included 987 (513 males and 474 females) healthy volunteers. Individuals with a history of illness, prior surgery or trauma involving any joint of either lower extremity were excluded from the study. The terminology and techniques of measurements used were those suggested by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. RESULTS: Left side passive hip flexion and active internal rotation was higher than the right side. Passive flexion of the hip joint was higher in male subjects and internal and external rotation was higher in female subjects. In the knee joint, passive extension was higher in males. Plantarflexion and inversion of the ankle joint were higher in male subjects and dorsiflexion and eversion were higher in female subjects. The differences were considered insignificant in clinical terms as all were less than 3 degrees. CONCLUSION: There is no clinically significantly difference between right and left side hip, knee and ankle joints ROM. Gender and cultural habits do not appear to have clinically significantly effects on lower extremity joint ROM.

OBJECTIVE: Leukocytosis is thought to be directly associated with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. Increased white blood cell (WBC) count is related to cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; raised neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with metabolic syndrome. There is little information, however, concerning a correlation between glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and NLR. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between NLR and blood glucose regulation. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, divided into two groups according to HbA1c levels: group 1, HbA1c levels ≤ 7%; group 2, HbA1c levels > 7%. Venous WBC, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts were determined. RESULTS: Of 71 patients included, fasting serum glucose, neutrophil and WBC counts were significantly higher in group 2 compared with group 1. NLR had a positive correlation with HbA1c. CONCLUSION: There may be a significant relationship between NLR and blood glucose regulation. The authors propose that increased NLR may be associated with elevated HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

Accompanying comorbidities observed during the cancer treatment usually affect the course and outcome of the therapy. Hypovitaminosis D, which is one of these conditions, is a resolvable problem, if recognized. In this study, we investigated whether the serum 25(OH)D levels of the patients who were presented to our outpatient clinic were different from the serum levels of the healthy population living in the same area. Our study included 90 patients who were presented to the Medical Oncology outpatient clinic and 90 age, gender, body mass index and ethnic origin matched controls without a known disease, who were presented to the outpatient clinics of the Departments of Internal Diseases and Family Medicine for routine controls. Blood count tests, detailed biochemistry tests (including serum levels of Cr, Ca and P), measurement of serum 25(OH)D levels and C-reactive protein were performed in serum samples of all of the patients and controls. Mean serum levels of 25(OH)D were 13.5 ng/ml (SD 5.1) in all cancer patients, 13.1 ng/ml (SD 4.2) in the patients who were presented for adjuvant therapy, 13.8 ng/ml (SD 5.5) in the patients who were presented at metastatic stage and 18.4 ng/ml (SD 12.5) in the controls. Mean serum CRP levels were 5.4 mg/dl (SD 1.2) in the control group, 8.4 mg/dl (SD 4.3) in the adjuvant therapy group and 20.3 (SD 16.8) in the patients with metastatic disease. Generally, all cancer patients (p 0.003) and the patients with metastatic cancer (p 0.004) had lower serum 25(OH)D levels compared to controls, and there was an inverse correlation between serum 25(OH)D and CRP levels in patients with metastatic cancer (p 0.036). In metastatic cancer patients, hypovitaminosis D may be a comorbidity and it is recommended to consider during initial evaluation and follow-up. Because it might improve these patients quality of life and chemotherapy adherence.
