ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Although lower body strength and size are often regarded as symbols of masculinity, their relationship to testosterone is unclear. This study aimed to determine the correlation between lower body strength, size, and testosterone levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum testosterone levels, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI) were measured in 69 men with erectile dysfunction (age >40 years). The circumferences of the thigh and calf were measured, and the muscle strength of the knee joints was evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer. Patients were classified into three groups according to testosterone levels (group 1, <230 ng/dL; group 2, 230 to 350 ng/dL; group 3, >350 ng/dL). Differences in calf and thigh circumference, bilateral knee extension, and flexion strength between the three groups were investigated using a one-way analysis of variance. Pearson's chi-square test was used to assess differences in lifestyle habits and underlying diseases. A partial correlation analysis was conducted to determine the association between testosterone levels and lower body size and strength. RESULTS: There was no difference in BMI among the three groups, but waist circumference was significantly larger in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3. When comparing weight-adjusted values, bilateral thigh circumference showed a significant difference among the three groups. There was also a significant difference between the three groups in the weight-adjusted left calf circumference and in the weight-adjusted right knee extension strength. The partial correlation test showed a significant positive correlation between thigh and calf circumference values adjusted for weight and serum testosterone levels. Weight-adjusted knee extension strength demonstrated a significant positive correlation with serum testosterone levels. CONCLUSIONS: Weight-adjusted thigh and calf circumferences, along with the thigh-to-waist ratio, showed a positive correlation with testosterone levels. Weight-adjusted knee extension strength was positively correlated with testosterone levels. Therefore, a robust thigh and strong lower body are related to testosterone.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study analyzed changes in body composition and physical fitness in men with testosterone deficiency (TD) after testosterone treatment (TT) and examined the correlations of body composition and physical fitness with serum testosterone levels and hypogonadal symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy patients with TD were divided into control (group I, n=23) and experimental (group II, n=47) groups. Patients in the experimental group were administered intramuscular testosterone enanthate (250 mg) for six months. The aging males symptom scale (AMS) score, international prostate symptom score (IPSS), body mass index, waist circumference, and serum laboratory values were measured at baseline and at the end of the study. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess the patients' body composition. Seven types of basic exercise tests were used to evaluate the patients' physical fitness. RESULTS: After six months, there were no significant differences in group I, while group II had significantly improved IPSS and AMS scores; increased hemoglobin, hematocrit, prostate-specific antigen, and testosterone levels and skeletal muscle mass; and waist circumference, and body fat mass. All elements of the physical fitness test were significantly improved in group II, with the exceptions of flexibility and endurance. Decreased waist circumference was correlated with changes in testosterone levels in group II, and the IPSS, cardiorespiratory fitness, and agility were correlated with improved hypogonadal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: TT improved the hypogonadal and lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with TD and improved body composition, physical fitness, and metabolic syndrome parameters. Increased testosterone and improved hypogonadal symptoms were correlated with a decrease in waist circumference and an improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness and agility. As such, when implementing TT, we should consider whether these areas may be improved, as this can help to predict the effect.

ABSTRACT

Background: The maintenance of ureteral stents is vital in patients with severe ureteral stricture or ureteral obstruction. This study aimed to identify microbiological characteristics and factors associated with bacteriuria and symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) in these patients. Methods: This study is an observational cross-sectional study. From August 2018 to January 2021, urine samples from 307 consecutive patients who required stent indwelling and had replaced ureteral stents more than once were collected before the replacement procedure and analyzed by microbiological testing. Patient demographics, laboratory test results, and data on dependent functional capacity and indwelling urethral catheter use were collected from all patients. Additionally, ureteral stenting duration and number of previous ureteral stent replacements were reviewed. The primary endpoint was the incidence rate of bacteriuria and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria. The secondary endpoint was the factors predisposing patients with ureteral stents to bacteriuria, ESBL-producing bacteria, and the development of symptomatic UTIs. Results: Bacteriuria was observed in 187 patients (60.9%). Among the bacteria identified in urine, Escherichia coli was the most commonly isolated microorganism, followed by Enterococcus, Candida species, Staphylococcus species, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas. Using multivariate analysis, bacteriuria was significantly associated with old age, female sex, presence of diabetes mellitus, impaired renal function, and longer duration of ureteral stenting. ESBL-producing bacteria were detected in 52 isolates (27.8%). The incidence of ESBL-producing bacteria in urine culture was associated with old age and longer ureteral stenting duration. Additionally, symptomatic UTIs developed in 22 patients (7.2%). Dependent functional capacity, impaired renal function, and longer ureteral stenting duration were significantly associated with symptomatic UTIs. Conclusions: Infections related to ureteral stents showed a specific microorganism profile and resistance pattern compared to community-acquired UTIs. Additionally, we identified the factors associated with bacteriuria and symptomatic UTI in patients with retained ureteral stents and deduced that these may be associated with better outcomes in patients with retained ureteral stents.

PURPOSE: Several studies have associated the serum vitamin D level with total testosterone levels and the prostate volume. Herein, we investigated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on testosterone, prostate, and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Men over 40 years of age diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency (25[OH]D <20 ng/mL) who received vitamin D supplementation for one year were included in the study and administered 25,000 IU of cholecalciferol every 2 weeks. Prostate ultrasound, uroflowmetry, postvoid residual urine volume measurement, and serological tests (serum testosterone levels, etc.) were performed upon diagnosis and one year later. Participants also answered the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Aging Males' Symptoms Scale (AMS) questionnaires. RESULTS: A significant increase was observed in the vitamin D level following one year of vitamin D supplementation, with a significant decrease in the postvoid residual urine volume, total IPSS score and without a significant change in the prostate volume. Improved psychological subscale score of AMS questionnaire was observed with a statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D supplementation suppressed the increase in the prostate volume and improved the LUTS. Although there is no direct effect on serum testosterone levels, vitamin D supplementation helped improve hypogonadal symptoms.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Nocturia is the most bothersome of lower urinary tract symptoms in men. Desmopressin, a synthetic analog of the human hormone vasopressin, has been used for the treatment of nocturia. However, the guidelines include varying recommendations for the use of desmopressin for the management of nocturia in men. Therefore, the Korean Urological Association (KUA) developed recommendations for desmopressin for the treatment of nocturia in men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A rigorous systematic review was performed and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methodology was used to rate the certainty of evidence for patient outcomes and to develop the evidence into recommendations. The steering group, guidelines development group, systematic review team, and external review group consisted of members of the Korean Continence Society, Korean Society of Geriatric Urological Care, and KUA, respectively, who were involved in the guidelines development process. RESULTS: The guidelines address the benefits, harms, patients' values and preferences, costs, and resources related to desmopressin by using a single clinical question: What is the effectiveness of desmopressin compared to that of placebo, behavior modification, or other pharmacological therapies? CONCLUSIONS: The guidelines development panel suggests desmopressin for men with nocturia instead of placebo, behavior modification, or alpha-blocker monotherapy (low certainty of evidence, weak recommendation). Additionally, the panel suggests desmopressin combination therapy with alpha-blockers for men with nocturia instead of alpha-blocker monotherapy or alpha-blocker combination therapy with anticholinergic agents (low certainty of evidence, weak recommendation).

ABSTRACT

Testosterone deficiency (TD) is common and impairs quality of life (QoL) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are no studies about whether testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can improve QoL in patients with CKD. Therefore, we investigated the effect of TRT on the QoL of patients with CKD and confirmed the safety of TRT. Twenty-five male patients with stages III-IV CKD whose serum testosterone levels were <350 ng/dl (TD) were enrolled and treated with testosterone gel for 3 months (group II). Age-matched controls with stages III-IV CKD and TD (group I) were recommended to exercise for the same period. Before and after the treatment, the BMI and handgrip strength were checked, serological tests were performed, and questionnaires were administered in both groups. Compared to baseline, there was no significant difference in serum testosterone levels, scores of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Aging Males' Symptoms Scale (AMS), and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and grip strength in group I after 3 months. In group II, a significant increase in testosterone, hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct) was observed, and grip strength significantly increased after TRT. Significant improvement in scores of SF-36, AMS, and IPSS was also confirmed after TRT in group II. There was a significant difference in testosterone, Hb, Hct, grip strength, and scores of SF-36, AMS, and IPSS between the two groups after 3 months. The patients in group II showed positive results and continued with TRT. Therefore, we conclude that TRT safely improves the QoL and TD symptoms in patients with moderate-to-severe CKD.

ABSTRACT

There is no conclusive evidence as to whether patients with testosterone deficiency (TD) who benefit from testosterone treatment (TRT) must continue the treatment for the rest of their lives. In some patients, the effect of TRT does not maintained after stopping TRT and, some patients show no significant TD symptoms, with normal testosterone levels after TRT cessation. Therefore, we investigated the predictive factors of response maintenance after TRT cessation. A total of 151 men with TD who responded to TRT were followed up for six months after TRT discontinuation. Ninety-two patients (Group I) failed to show response maintenance; 59 patients (Group II) had a maintained response. The groups did not differ in baseline characteristics or the type of TRT (oral, gel, short/long-acting injectables). However, TRT duration was significantly longer (10.7 vs. 5.2 months), and peak total testosterone (TT) level was significantly higher (713.7 vs. 546.1 ng/dL), in Group II than in Group I. More patients regularly exercised in Group II than in Group I (45.8% vs. 9.8%, p < 0.001). A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that exercise (B = 2.325, odds ratio = 10.231, p < 0.001) and TRT duration (B = 0.153, Exp(B) = 1.166, p < 0.001) were independent predictive factors of response maintenance. In men with TD who respond to TRT, longer treatment periods can improve the response durability after TRT cessation, regardless of the type of TRT. Additionally, regular exercise can increase the probability of maintaining the response after TRT cessation.

PURPOSE: We investigated the correlations of serum total testosterone (TT) levels with body composition and physical fitness parameters in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) to know the best exercise for testosterone deficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-seven ED patients underwent serum TT assessment as well as body composition and basic exercise testing. The bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess body composition. Seven types of basic exercise tests were used to determine physical fitness. Correlations between serum TT levels and body composition/physical function parameters were evaluated using partial correlation analyses. A serum TT cut-off value was obtained for the parameters significantly correlated with serum TT levels. RESULTS: The subjects had a mean serum TT level of 342.1 ng/dL. Among the body composition parameters, body and abdominal fat percentages showed statistically significant negative correlations with serum TT levels. Among the basic exercise test parameters, only the cycle ergometer test for cardiorespiratory fitness showed a statistically significant positive correlation with serum TT levels. CONCLUSIONS: Serum TT levels in patients with ED, may be increased by reducing fat percentage and improving cardiorespiratory fitness via aerobic exercise.

ABSTRACT

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infectious diseases that commonly occur in communities. Although several international guidelines for the management of UTIs have been available, clinical characteristics, etiology and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns may differ from country to country. This work represents an update of the 2011 Korean guideline for UTIs. The current guideline was developed by the update and adaptation method. This clinical practice guideline provides recommendations for the diagnosis and management of UTIs, including asymptomatic bacteriuria, acute uncomplicated cystitis, acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis, complicated pyelonephritis related to urinary tract obstruction, and acute bacterial prostatitis. This guideline targets community-acquired UTIs occurring among adult patients. Healthcare-associated UTIs, catheter-associated UTIs, and infections in immunocompromised patients were not included in this guideline.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of metabolic status on associations of serum vitamin D with hypogonadism and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)/benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 612 men underwent physical examination, biochemical/hormonal blood testing, and transrectal prostate ultrasound. Moreover, the subjects filled out standard questionnaires for identification and grading of LUTS and hypogonadism symptoms. Parameters were statistically compared with independent t-tests and correlation analyses. RESULTS: Vitamin D levels positively correlated with total testosterone (TT) but not with prostate volume or International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). Patients with metabolic syndrome had significantly lower vitamin D levels, which were not correlated with TT, prostate volume, or IPSS. However, vitamin D was positively correlated with TT, and negatively correlated with prostate volume and quality-of-life IPSS in subjects without metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: The clinical usefulness of vitamin D for treatment of hypogonadism or LUTS/BPH varies according to metabolic status.

ABSTRACT

The effects of the combination of exercise and TRT on symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) and the durability of response after cessation of TRT were investigated. A total of fifty patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) who had a sedentary lifestyle and low serum total testosterone (T) levels were enrolled and followed for 20 weeks. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; all of them received T gel for 12 weeks and it was discontinued for 8 weeks. Patients assigned to Group II were offered a supervised exercise program for 20 weeks. Measurement of serological testing was performed and self-assessment questionnaires and Global Assessment Question (GAQ) were asked. Baseline characteristics and the initial symptom scores showed no significant difference between the two groups. Serum total T levels and the symptom scores were increased at 12 weeks in both groups, and Group II showed better results with statistical significance. There was a decrease in T levels and worsening of symptom scores at week 20 compared to week 12 in both groups, and Group II showed better results with statistical significance. On the GAQ, Group II showed higher ratio of "yes" at week 12 and the same tendency was sustained at week 20 with significant difference between two groups. The combination of exercise and TRT showed significant improvements in serum T levels and LOH symptoms compared to TRT alone. In addition, these improvements were maintained in the combination group with continuous exercise, even after cessation of TRT.

ABSTRACT

In 2014, the Korean Urological Association organized the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Guideline Developing Committee composed of experts in the field of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with the participation of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine and the Korean Continence Society to develop a Korean clinical practice guideline for BPH. The purpose of this clinical practice guideline is to provide current and comprehensive recommendations for the evaluation and treatment of BPH. The committee developed the guideline mainly by adapting existing guidelines and partially by using the de novo method. A comprehensive literature review was carried out primarily from 2009 to 2013 by using medical search engines including data from Korea. Based on the published evidence, recommendations were synthesized, and the level of evidence of the recommendations was determined by using methods adapted from the 2011 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. Meta-analysis was done for one key question and four recommendations. A draft guideline was reviewed by expert peer reviewers and discussed at an expert consensus meeting until final agreement was achieved. This evidence-based guideline for BPH provides recommendations to primary practitioners and urologists for the diagnosis and treatment of BPH in men older than 40 years.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate disease insight, personal distress, and healthcare-seeking behavior of women with urinary incontinence (UI) to improve women's health in Korea. METHODS: In October 2012, 500 Korean women residing around Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do were selected by random sampling for a population-based cross-sectional survey conducted by computer-aided telephone interview. Sixteen questions, which included information on demographic characteristics, information sources, disease insights, and general health-seeking behavior, were used for data collection. RESULTS: Among the responders, 23.8% experienced UI, the prevalence of which increased with increasing age; 83.3% knew about UI through the mass media out of 98.2% apprehended people. Regarding general awareness of UI, 77.2% understood that UI is caused by aging. A total of 48.7% of subjects experienced societal restrictions because of UI. Most women in their 30s (25.6%) acquired UI information from the Internet, while those in their 50s and 60s (50-59 years, 51.1%; 60-64 years, 42.4%) learned about UI through friends. Among subjects who did not have UI, 89.37% intended to see a doctor or consult a professional if they developed UI (83.2%). Among those with UI, however, only 59.0% had talked about UI; 79.7% had talked with friends or associates, whereas only 23.2% had consulted a professional. CONCLUSIONS: Most respondents tended to obtain information on UI through the mass media. Subjects who did not have UI expressed their intention to consult a professional if they developed UI, while the percentage of subjects with UI who had consulted a professional was very low. Many women are ashamed of UI in Korea, which may be changed by providing efficient advertising with the right information and establishing a new perception of UI.

INTRODUCTION: Both testosterone therapy and chronic treatment with phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is) have positive effects on the histology of penile corpora and erectile function. However, few clinical studies have evaluated the efficacy of combination therapy with both testosterone replacement and chronic PDE5Is. AIM: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination treatment with long-acting injectable testosterone undecanoate (TU) and a once-daily tadalafil 5 mg for erectile dysfunction with testosterone deficiency syndrome. METHODS: Sixty patients were consecutively enrolled and followed for 36 weeks. Thirty patients were randomly assigned to group I and received 1,000 mg of parenteral TU on day 1, followed by additional injections at weeks 6 and 18 with on-demand tadalafil 10-20 mg during the 30 weeks of treatment. The remaining 30 patients received the same dose and schedule of TU as group I, and were prescribed once-daily tadalafil 5 mg during 30 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Serological tests were performed, and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) questionnaires, and Global Assessment Question (GAQ) were administered to the patients. RESULTS: Total IIEF and AMS scores were significantly improved during the 30 weeks of treatment in both groups. When IIEF scores were compared between the two groups, group II showed better symptom scores than group I at weeks 6 and 30. A similar pattern was observed when comparing AMS scores between the groups. At week 36, changes in IIEF and AMS scores that indicated worsened symptoms compared with week 30 were observed in both groups; group II showed better symptom scores than group I. On the GAQ, the ratio of patients reporting improvement in erectile function was significantly higher in group II than group I. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of long-acting injectable TU and once-daily tadalafil 5 mg produced a significant improvement in erectile function. Moreover, the improvement in erectile function was well maintained, even after the cessation of treatment.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Combination therapy with an α-1-adrenergic blocker and phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is) has shown improvements in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) with negligible side effects. Nonetheless, decisive advantages in symptom improvement were insufficient, and there were no clinical differences between long- or short-acting PDE5Is in combination with combination medication. METHODS: To review the studies on α-1-adrenergic blocker monotherapy and combination therapy with long vs. short-acting PDE5Is in their use in LUTS and erectile dysfunction (ED). A search of the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and KoreaMed databases was conducted from 2000 to 2014 using combinations of the relevant terms. Among the 323 relevant references discovered, 10 were selected for meta-analysis. The data showed that 616 men received combination therapy (PDE5Is with α-1-adrenergic blockers) or α-1-adrenergic blocker monotherapy. RESULTS: Meta-analysis of the combination therapy showed it was more effective than α-blockers in improving symptoms, with a mean International Prostrate Symptom Score change difference of -1.93 while those of the long- vs. short-acting PDE5I were -2.12 vs. -1.70. Compared to maximum flow rate (Qmax) value with monotherapy, the Qmax increased more with the combination therapy (mean difference of 0.71) while change values were 0.14 and 1.13 for the long- and short-acting PDE5Is, respectively. Residual urine decreased more with the combination therapy than it did with α-1-adrenergic blocker monotherapy with a mean difference of -7.09 while the mean residual urine change values for long- vs. short-acting PDE5Is were -18.83 vs. -5.93. The International Index of Erectile Function value increased by 3.99, 2.85, and 4.85 following combination therapy, and therapy with long- and short-acting PDE5Is. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis suggests that PDE5Is can significantly improve LUTS in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia/ED. Furthermore, combination PDE5I and α-1-adrenergic blocker could be a more effective treatment than α-1-adrenergic blocker monotherapy, and the differences between long and short-acting agents were minimal.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Nationwide database regarding stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is important for evaluating treatment patterns for SUI and for establishing appropriate national policies regarding SUI management. The purpose of this present study was to investigate surgical treatment patterns for women with SUI and analyze the current status of SUI management in Korea by using a nationwide database. METHODS: Data used for investigating the surgical trends and changes in Korea were retrieved from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service from 2008 to 2011. RESULTS: The number of surgical cases of SUI decreased continuously from 2008 to 2011. The proportion of transvaginal surgery using a midurethral sling increased continuously. Sling procedures were most commonly performed for women in their 40s followed by women in their 50s. Transvaginal surgery using a single sling or a readjustable sling was performed from 5.6% to 6.1%, which showed no significant change in the number of surgical cases. CONCLUSIONS: There is a growing need for an appropriate national welfare policy and budget to care for aged and super-aged women in Korea. The early detection and intervention of silent SUI should be actively considered as an important preventive strategy to improve the quality of life in younger women.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In this study, we administered erythropoietin preoperatively to patients who underwent open radical prostatectomy without transfusion to increase their hemoglobin levels and investigated the efficacy of this procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 62 patients who underwent open radical prostatectomy performed by the same surgeon between June 2005 and January 2011. The 22 patients who refused transfusion were assigned to group 1; the patients who accepted transfusion were assigned to group 2. Before surgery, we administered erythropoietin beta to group 1 patients whose hemoglobin levels were <12 g/dL and retrospectively compared the clinical data of the two groups. We used the t-test and the chi-square test for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Mean preoperative hemoglobin levels in group 1 after erythropoietin administration (14.5 g/dL) were significantly higher than those in group 2 (13.59 g/dL, p=0.003). Moreover, the difference in the mean hemoglobin levels before and after surgery for group 1 patients (3.55 g/dL) significantly exceeded that for group 2 patients (2.08 g/dL, p=0.000). Additional analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in perioperative complications between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative erythropoietin administration increased the safety margin of hemoglobin levels, and this strategy worked sufficiently well in our experience.

ABSTRACT

Primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is a rare malignant testicular tumor with a poor prognosis. Here we report the case of a 54-year-old man with right hydronephrosis that was detected before the diagnosis of the primary testicular lesion. During the evaluation of the right hydronephrosis by use of abdominopelvic computed tomography, a painless, hard, solid lesion was found on the right testis. The patient underwent radical orchiectomy, and the pathologic examination revealed an adenocarcinoma of the rete testis. Multiple metastases were present at the time of diagnosis. The patient received combined chemotherapy after the surgery but lived only 8 months after the initial diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine whether listening to music during cystoscopy decreases anxiety, pain, and dissatisfaction among patients and results in a more comfortable and better-tolerated procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy male patients who underwent rigid cystoscopy between May 2011 and December 2011 were randomized into the following: no music (Group I, n=35) or classical music during procedure (Group II, n=35). Before cystoscopy, lidocaine gel was instilled in the urethra, and both groups viewed their procedures on a video monitor. Anxiety levels were quantified according to the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. A visual analog scale (0-10) was used for a self-assessment of satisfaction, discomfort, and willingness among patients to repeat the cystoscopy. RESULTS: Demographic characteristics, mean age, procedure duration, and procedure indications were statistically similar between the two groups. The mean anxiety level and mean pain score of Group II were significantly lower than those of Group I (p<0.001 for both). Group II also carried a significant greater mean satisfaction score compared with Group I (p<0.001). Statistically significant differences were detected between groups in the postprocedural pulse rate and the systolic blood pressure (p=0.012 and p=0.008, respectively), whereas preprocedure pulse rate and systolic blood pressure were similar. CONCLUSIONS: Listening to music during rigid cystoscopy significantly reduces feelings of pain, discomfort, and dissatisfaction. Music can serve as a simple, inexpensive, and effective adjunct to sedation during cystoscopy. We recommend the application of music during rigid cystoscopy for clinical use.
