ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cervicogenic headache is characterized by chronic posterior neck pain radiating to one side of the head, resulting from cervical spine bone or soft tissue diseases. Cervical ganglioneuroma (GN), a rare benign neuroblastic tumor, especially in the cervical spine, may cause cervicogenic headache-like symptoms. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of GN which was surgically removed successfully to relieve the symptom. CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old male presented with right posterior neck pain with referred pain to the ipsilateral occipital area in May 2020. Despite administration of medications, physical therapy, and spine interventions, the symptoms intermittently recurred over one year. In July 2021, the patient complained of painful limitation of neck motion, especially on right-sided bending; no motor or sensory deficits, except for subjective numbness of the finger tips, were detected. Plain radiography of the cervical spine showed moderate degenerative changes in the mid-cervical spine. Cervical MRI revealed a cystic mass (1.5 cm × 0.5 cm × 1 cm-in size) around the right C2 dorsal root ganglion adjacent to the C1-C2 facet joint. His symptoms significantly improved after complete tumor excision. CONCLUSION: GN of the upper cervical spine should be considered when persistent cervicogenic headache is refractory to conservative management. In such a case, advanced imaging studies such as MRI should be performed for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

The effects of COVID-19 vaccination on short-term and long-term cerebrovascular risks among COVID-19 survivors remained unknown. We conducted a national multi-center retrospective cohort study with 151 597 vaccinated and 151 597 unvaccinated COVID-19 patients using the TriNetX database, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2023. Patients baseline characteristics were balanced with propensity score matching (PSM). The outcomes were incident cerebrovascular diseases occurred between 1st and 30th days (short-term) after COVID-19 diagnosis. Nine subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potential effect modifications. We performed six sensitivity analyses, including evaluation of outcomes between 1st to 180th days, accounting for competing risk, and incorporating different variant timeline to test the robustness of our results. Kaplan-Meier curves and Log-Rank tests were performed to evaluate survival difference. Cox proportional hazards regressions were adopted to estimate the PSM-adjusted hazard ratios (HR). The overall short-term cerebrovascular risks were lower in the vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group (HR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.56-0.77), specifically cerebral infarction (HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.48-0.79), occlusion and stenosis of precerebral arteries (HR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.53-0.98), other cerebrovascular diseases (HR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.42-0.77), and sequelae of cerebrovascular disease (HR: 0.39, 95% CI:0.23-0.68). Similarly, the overall cerebrovascular risks were lower in those vaccinated among most subgroups. The long-term outcomes, though slightly attenuated, were consistent (HR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73-0.87). Full 2-dose vaccination was associated with a further reduced risk of cerebrovascular diseases (HR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.50-0.80) compared to unvaccinated patients. Unvaccinated COVID-19 survivors have significantly higher cerebrovascular risks than their vaccinated counterparts. Thus, clinicians are recommended to monitor this population closely for stroke events during postinfection follow-up.

ABSTRACT

We characterized the therapeutic biological modes of action of several terpenes in Poria cocos F.A Wolf (PC) and proposed a broad therapeutic mode of action for PC. Molecular docking and drug-induced transcriptome analysis were performed to confirm the pharmacological mechanism of PC terpene, and a new analysis method, namely diffusion network analysis, was proposed to verify the mechanism of action against Alzheimer's disease. We confirmed that the compound that exists only in PC has a unique mechanism through statistical-based docking analysis. Also, docking and transcriptomic analysis results could reflect results in clinical practice when used complementarily. The detailed pharmacological mechanism of PC was confirmed by constructing and analyzing the Alzheimer's disease diffusion network, and the antioxidant activity based on microglial cells was verified. In this study, we used two bioinformatics approaches to reveal PC's broad mode of action while also using diffusion networks to identify its detailed pharmacological mechanisms of action. The results of this study provide evidence that future pharmacological mechanism analysis should simultaneously consider complementary docking and transcriptomics and suggest diffusion network analysis, a new method to derive pharmacological mechanisms based on natural complex compounds.

ABSTRACT

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, most commonly caused by viral infections, with other contributing factors including medications or systemic inflammatory conditions. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2 virus). In this report, we present a case of fulminant myocarditis in a patient with COVID-19 infection. Fulminant myocarditis is an aggressively progressive and severe variant that can result in substantial cardiac impairment. We present a case of fulminant myocarditis with a unique time course, progression, and potential challenges faced in diagnosis and management. Healthcare providers need to remain vigilant and anticipate the potential rapid progression of this disease.

ABSTRACT

Despite the significant potential of protein biosensors, their construction remains a trial-and-error process. The most obvious approach for addressing this is to utilize modular biosensor architectures where specificity-conferring modalities can be readily generated to recognize new targets. Toward this goal, we established a workflow that uses mRNA display-based selection of hyper-stable monobody domains for the target of choice or ribosome display to select equally stable DARPins. These binders were integrated into a two-component allosteric biosensor architecture based on a calmodulin-reporter chimera. This workflow was tested by developing biosensors for liver toxicity markers such as cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase, mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase 1. We demonstrate that our pipeline consistently produced >103 unique binders for each target within a week. Our analysis revealed that the affinity of the binders for their targets was not a direct predictor of the binder's performance in a biosensor context. The interactions between the binding domains and the reporter module affect the biosensor activity and the dynamic range. We conclude that following binding domain selection, the multiplexed biosensor assembly and prototyping appear to be the most promising approach for identifying biosensors with the desired properties.

Background: The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) continues to increase as a simple, inexpensive means of transport, resulting in a sharp increase in the incidence of scooter-related accidents. No study to date has closely examined the injury extent to the lower leg, joints, and extremities from e-scooter-related accidents. Here, we investigated the epidemiology and injury patterns of such accidents, focusing on injuries to the ankle and foot. Methods: Based on data from a single tertiary hospital's database, the demographics of 563 patients with scooter-associated injuries were analyzed retrospectively. Among the patients, 229 patients who were injured by e-scooter riding were further investigated. Based on the data, the general demographics of whole scooter-associated injuries and the injury characteristics and fracture cases of the lower leg, ankle, and foot were analyzed. Results: During the 4-year study period, the number of patients injured by e-scooters increased every year. Lower extremities were the most common injury site (67.2%) among riders, whereas injuries to the head and neck (64.3%) were more common in riders of non-electric scooters. Among the lower leg, ankle, and foot injuries of riders (52 cases), the ankle joint (53.8%) was the most commonly injured site, followed by the foot (40.4%) and lower leg (21.2%). The fracture group scored significantly higher on the Abbreviated Injury Scale than the non-fracture group (p < 0.001). Among the fracture group (20 cases), ankle fractures (9 cases) were most common, including pronation external rotation type 4 injuries (4 cases) and pilon fractures (2 cases). Five patients (25%) had open fractures, and 12 patients (60%) underwent surgical treatment. Conclusions: The ankle and foot are the most common injury sites in e-scooter-related accidents. Given the high frequency and severity of e-scooter-related ankle and foot injuries, we suggest that more attention be paid to preventing these types of injuries with greater public awareness of the dangers of using e-scooters.

ABSTRACT

Previous research has explored theories regarding the vertical transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and its association with adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. However, the impact of maternal HPV infection on congenital anomalies (CAs) in offspring remains relatively understudied. We conducted a population-based cohort study linking the Taiwan Birth Registry, Taiwan Death Registry, and National Health Insurance Research Database, in which newborns born in Taiwan between 2009 and 2015 were included. We established a maternal HPV infection cohort comprising 37 807 newborns and matched them with a comparison group of 151 228 newborns at a 1:4 ratio based on index year, age, and sex. The study examined a composite outcome and subgroups of different types of congenital malformations. Differences in cumulative incidence of CAs were assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regressions. No significant association was found between HPV infection and the broad spectrum of CAs (aHR: 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98-1.10; log-rank test p = 0.14). However, we observed a 19% increased risk of musculoskeletal CAs in the maternal HPV infection group (aHR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.05-1.34) compared to those without maternal HPV exposure. Other factors, including the type of HPV (aHR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.16-2.63), the timing of exposure (during or before pregnancy), and maternal age (aHR for <30 years: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.94-1.1; aHR for 30-39 years: 1.05, 95% CI: 0.99-1.11; aHR for ≥40 years: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.67-1.17), did not significantly affect the risk for any CA. In conclusion, gestation detection of HPV infection was associated with musculoskeletal CAs but not other major CAs. Prospective studies are warranted to elucidate the necessity of prenatal screening in populations at risk.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To summarize the clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and prognostic factors of children with non-metastatic Ewing's sarcoma (ES). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 41 children with non-metastatic ES diagnosed and treated at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from January 2010 to December 2018. All patients underwent chemotherapy based on the RMS-2009 protocol of the center, and local treatment such as surgery and/or radiotherapy was performed according to risk grouping. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) rates. Univariate prognostic analysis was performed using the log-rank test, and multivariate analysis was conducted with Cox regression. RESULTS: Of the 41 children, 21 were male and 20 were female. The median age at diagnosis was 7.7 years (range: 1.2-14.6 years). The median follow-up time for patients with event-free survival was 68.1 months (range: 8.1-151.7 months). As of the last follow-up, 33 patients were in complete remission, and the overall 5-year EFS and OS rates were (78±6)% and (82±6)%, respectively. Univariate analysis by the log-rank test showed that a tumor diameter ≥8 cm, time from diagnosis to start of local treatment ≥16 weeks, and incomplete surgical resection were associated with poor prognosis (P<0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that incomplete surgical resection (HR=8.381, 95%CI: 1.681-41.801, P=0.010) was an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in children with ES. Secondary tumors occurred in 2 cases. CONCLUSIONS: A comprehensive treatment strategy incorporating chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy can improve the prognosis of children with ES. Poor prognosis is associated with an initial tumor diameter ≥8 cm, while complete surgical resection and early initiation of local treatment can improve outcomes.

Among civilization diseases, the number of individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is expected to increase to more than a billion in less than 20 years, which is associated with, e.g., populational aging, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, genetic predispositions, and immunological factors. T2DM affects many organs and is characterized by insulin resistance, high glucose levels, and adipocyte dysfunction, which are related to senescence. Although this type of cellular aging has beneficial biological functions, it can also act unfavorable since senescent adipocytes resist apoptosis, enhance cytokine secretion, downregulate cell identity genes, and acquire the senescence-associated secretory phenotype that renders a more oxidative environment. Opposing T2DM is possible via a wide variety of senotherapies, including senolytics and senomorphics; nevertheless, further research is advised to expand therapeutic possibilities and benefits. Consequences that ought to be deeply researched include secretory phenotype, chronic inflammation, increasing insulin resistance, as well as impairment of adipogenesis and functioning of adipocyte cells. Herein, despite reviewing T2DM and fat tissue senescence, we summarized the latest adipocyte-related anti-diabetes solutions and suggested further research directions.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chuanxiong, a plant of the Umbelliferae family, is a genuine medicinal herb from Sichuan Province. Phthalides are one of its main active components and exhibit good protective effect against cerebrovascular diseases. However, the mechanism by which phthalides exert neuroprotective effects is still largely unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: In this study, we extracted a phthalein component (named as QBT) from Ligusticum Chuanxiong, and investigated its neuroprotective effects against vascular dementia (VaD) rats and the underlying mechanism, focusing on the chemokine 12 (CXCL12)/chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 4 (CXCR4) axis. METHODS: A rat model of VaD was established, and treated with QBT. Cognitive dysfunction in VaD rats was assessed using the Y-maze, new object recognition, and Morris water maze tests. Neuronal damage and inflammatory response in VaD rats were examined through Nissl staining, immunofluorescence, enzyme-linked immunospecific assay, and western blotting analysis. Furthermore, the effects of QBT on CXCL12/CXCR4 axis and its downstream signaling pathways, Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) and phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), were investigated in VaD rats and BV2 microglial cells exposed to oxygen glucose deprivation. RESULTS: QBT significantly alleviated cognitive dysfunction and neuronal damage in VaD rats, along with inhibition of VaD-induced over-activation of microglia and astrocytes and inflammatory response. Moreover, QBT exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis and its downstream JAK2/STAT3 and PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathways, thereby attenuating the neuroinflammatory response both in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION: QBT effectively mitigated neuronal damage and cognitive dysfunction in VaD rats, exerting neuroprotective effects by suppressing neuroinflammatory response through inhibition of the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis.

ABSTRACT

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and therefore the identification of the modifiable risk factors [such as exposure to vapors, gases, dust and fumes (VGDF)] for accelerate disease progression has important significance. Methods: We conducted COPD surveillance in six cities of southern China between 2014 and 2019. We recorded the diagnosis of chronic bronchitis, respiratory symptoms, occupational exposure to VGDF and other covariates by using a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression and multivariate linear regression model were adopted for analysis. We performed sensitivity analyses based on two methods of propensity score (PS) methods to evaluate the robustness of our results. Results: A total of 7,418 participants were included. Cough [odds ratios (ORs): 1.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22 to 2.08] and phlegm (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.85) correlated significantly with exposure to dust. There was an increased risk of cough (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.07) for occupational exposure to gas/vapor/fume. Dual exposure to dust and gas/vapor/fume was associated with a significantly increased risk of chronic bronchitis (OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.20 to 2.52), cough (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.79) and phlegm (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.24 to 1.79). In 5,249 participants with complete data of spirometry, gas/vapor/fume was associated with a decreased ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) (ß: -1.05, 95% CI: -1.85 to -0.26) and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF) (ß: -0.15, 95% CI: -0.23 to -0.07). Dual exposure to dust and gas/vapor/fume was significantly associated with decreased FEV1/FVC (ß: -0.74, 95% CI: -1.28 to -0.20) and MMEF (ß: -0.06, 95% CI: -0.12 to -0.01). Results of sensitivity analysis were not materially changed. Conclusions: VGDF exposure is associated with chronic bronchitis, respiratory symptoms and decreased lung function, suggesting that VGDF contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of COPD.

BACKGROUND: The use of structural and perfusion brain imaging in combination with behavioural information in the prediction of cognitive syndromes using a data-driven approach remains to be explored. Here, we thus examined the contribution of brain structural and perfusion imaging and behavioural features to the existing classification of cognitive syndromes using a data-driven approach. METHODS: Study participants belonged to the community-based Biomarker and Cognition Cohort Study in Singapore who underwent neuropsychological assessments, structural-functional MRI and blood biomarkers. Participants had a diagnosis of cognitively normal (CN), subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. Cross-sectional structural and cerebral perfusion imaging, behavioural scale data including mild behaviour impairment checklist, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale data were obtained. RESULTS: Three hundred seventy-three participants (mean age 60.7 years; 56% female sex) with complete data were included. Principal component analyses demonstrated that no single modality was informative for the classification of cognitive syndromes. However, multivariate glmnet analyses revealed a specific combination of frontal perfusion and temporo-frontal grey matter volume were key protective factors while the severity of mild behaviour impairment interest sub-domain and poor sleep quality were key at-risk factors contributing to the classification of CN, SCI, MCI and dementia (p < 0.0001). Moreover, the glmnet model showed best classification accuracy in differentiating between CN and MCI cognitive syndromes (AUC = 0.704; sensitivity = 0.698; specificity = 0.637). CONCLUSIONS: Brain structure, perfusion and behavioural features are important in the classification of cognitive syndromes and should be incorporated by clinicians and researchers. These findings illustrate the value of using multimodal data when examining syndrome severity and provide new insights into how cerebral perfusion and behavioural impairment influence classification of cognitive syndromes.

ABSTRACT

Background: Neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists have improved the management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), but to date there has been no prospective comparison between oral aprepitant and intravenous fosaprepitant in pediatric oncology patients. Methods: Our study was a double-parallel study, and the distribution ratio was 1:1. Children aged 2-12 years who were undergoing moderate or highly emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC or HEC) were randomly assigned to receive ondansetron and dexamethasone combined with either a single dose of intravenous fosaprepitant (arm A), or 3 days of oral aprepitant (arm B). The primary outcome measure was the rate of complete response (CR) of CINV within the acute phase, defined as from the start through 24 hours after the last chemotherapy dose. Response during the delayed phase, overall response, and use of rescue antiemetics were also assessed. Results: We prospectively evaluated 108 eligible patients, including 55 receiving fosaprepitant. Study observations were made during a single cycle for each patient. The occurrence of CR in the acute phase was statistically higher for patients receiving fosaprepitant (95% vs. 79%, P=0.018<0.05). Modest differences were seen in CR rates during the delayed phase (71% vs. 66%, P=0.586), and overall response rate (69% vs. 57%, P=0.179). The use of antiemetic rescue medicines was similar between arms A (11%) and B (7%). Conclusions: Fosaprepitant produced more CRs of CINV in the acute phase than did aprepitant, although there were no statistical differences in delayed phase response, overall response, or use of rescue antiemetics. This study confirms the safety, efficacy, and potential advantages of fosaprepitant in reducing CINV in pediatric oncology patients. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04873284.

ABSTRACT

Background: Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) is one of the earliest observable changes when a person experiences cognitive decline and could be an early manifestation of underlying Alzheimer's disease neuropathology. Limited attention has been given to investigating the clinical applicability of behavioral biomarkers for detection of prodromal dementia. Objective: This study compared the prevalence of self-reported MBI and vascular risk factors in Southeast Asian adults to identify early indicators of cognitive impairment and dementia. Methods: This cohort study utilized baseline data from the Biomarkers and Cognition Study, Singapore (BIOCIS). 607 participants were recruited and classified into three groups: cognitively normal (CN), subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Group comparisons of cognitive-behavioral, neuroimaging, and blood biomarkers data were applied using univariate analyses. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate the association between cerebrovascular disease, vascular profiles, and cognitive impairment. Results: SCD had significantly higher depression scores and poorer quality of life (QOL) compared to CN. MCI had significantly higher depression scores; total MBI symptoms, MBI-interest, MBI-mood, and MBI-beliefs; poorer sleep quality; and poorer QOL compared to CN. Higher Staals scores, glucose levels, and systolic blood pressure were significantly associated with MCI classification. Fasting glucose levels were significantly correlated with depression, anxiety, MBI-social, and poorer sleep quality. Conclusions: The results reflect current research that behavioral changes are among the first symptoms noticeable to the person themselves as they begin to experience cognitive decline. Self-reported questionnaires may aid in early diagnoses of prodromal dementia. Behavioral changes and diabetes could be potential targets for preventative healthcare for dementia.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has become a key factor affecting the cycling stability of aqueous Zn-ion batteries, while the corresponding fundamental issues involving HER are still unclear. Herein, the reaction mechanisms of HER on various crystalline surfaces have been investigated by first-principle calculations based on density functional theory. It is found that the Volmer step is the rate-limiting step of HER on the Zn (002) and (100) surfaces, while, the reaction rates of HER on the Zn (101), (102) and (103) surfaces are determined by the Tafel step. Moreover, the correlation between HER activity and the generalized coordination number ([Formula: see text]) of Zn at the surfaces has been revealed. The relatively weaker HER activity on Zn (002) surface can be attributed to the higher [Formula: see text] of surface Zn atom. The atomically uneven Zn (002) surface shows significantly higher HER activity than the flat Zn (002) surface as the [Formula: see text] of the surface Zn atom is lowered. The [Formula: see text] of surface Zn atom is proposed as a key descriptor of HER activity. Tuning the [Formula: see text] of surface Zn atom would be a vital strategy to inhibit HER on the Zn anode surface based on the presented theoretical studies. Furthermore, this work provides a theoretical basis for the in-depth understanding of HER on the Zn surface.

ABSTRACT

Recent advancements in preparing few-layer black phosphorene (BP) are hindered by edge reconstruction challenges. Our previous studies have revealed the factors contributing to the difficulty of growing few-layer BP. In this study, we have successfully identified three reconstructed edges in bi- and multilayer BP through a combination of the crystal structure analysis by particle swarm optimization (CALYPSO) global structure search and density functional theory (DFT). Notably, the reconstruction between adjacent layers proves more beneficial than self-passivation or maintaining pristine edges. Among the reconstructed edges, the reconstructed ZZ edge is the most stable, regardless of the number of layers. Calculated electronic band structures reveal a significant transition in the electronic properties of black phosphorus nanoribbons (BPNRs), changing from metallic to semiconducting. This insight not only enhances the understanding of the fundamental properties of BP but also provides valuable theoretical guidance for the experimental growth of BPNRs or black phosphorus nanowires (BPNWs).

Opioid-free multimodal analgesia (MMA) emerges as a preferable approach for postoperative pain management compared to opioid-based patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) in robot-assisted bilateral axillary breast approach thyroidectomy, a procedure commonly undergone by young female patients. We compared the analgesic efficacy and other recovery profiles between MMA and PCA. In total, 88 female patients were administered fentanyl-based PCA or the combination of lidocaine continuous infusion and nefopam injection before recovery from general anesthesia. The visual analog scale score of postoperative pain was assessed at the post-anesthesia care unit and at 6, 12, and 24 h after the termination of surgery. Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), rescue analgesic and anti-emetic agents, recovery profiles, and adverse events were also compared. The median numeric rating scores on postoperative pain at 6 h after recovery from general anesthesia were three in both groups, with no significant difference between the groups at any time point. The PONV incidence was significantly higher in the PCA group than in the MMA group. The combination of systemic lidocaine infusion and nefopam injection has an analgesic effect equivalent to that of fentanyl-based PCA without PONV.

As a cotton defoliator, tribufos (S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate) is widespread in the environment. It can cause neurotoxicity in chickens, reproductive toxicity in rats, and can also cause headaches and nausea in humans. However, little is known about its impact on the reproduction of birds. Here, by analyzing the differences in reproductive indexs and histopathological characteristics, we investigated the chronic effects of 32 mg a.i./kg, 160 mg a.i./kg and 800 mg a.i./kg tribufos treatment on the reproductive ability of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The results indicated that 32 mg a.i./kg and 160 mg a.i./kg tribufos treatment significantly reduced the food intake of quails, significantly increased the broken egg rate, and had adverse effects on gonads and liver tissue. The 160 mg a.i./kg tribufos treatment also significantly reduced the average egg production. Moreover, 800 mg a.i./kg treatment had significant negative effects on feed intake (FI), body weight (BW), eggshell thickness, egg production (EP), fertilization rate, hatchability and progeny 14-d survival rate, and it also significantly increased the broken egg rate. In addition, tribufos exposure caused lesions in quail gonads and liver tissue. Overall, our results revealed that tribufos had adverse effects on the reproductive ability of Japanese quail, especially at high concentrations.
