ABSTRACT

The "symmetric mass generation" (SMG) quantum phase transition discovered in recent years has attracted great interest from both condensed matter and high energy theory communities. Here, interacting Dirac fermions acquire a gap without condensing any fermion bilinear mass term or any concomitant spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is hence beyond the conventional Gross-Neveu-Yukawa-Higgs paradigm. One important question we address in this Letter is whether the SMG transition corresponds to a true unitary conformal field theory. We employ the sharp diagnosis including the scaling of disorder operator and Rényi entanglement entropy in large-scale lattice model quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our results strongly suggest that the SMG transition is indeed an unconventional quantum phase transition and it should correspond to a true (2+1)d unitary conformal field theory.

ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy is used to investigate the intermolecular interaction between two substances dissolved in the same solutions, where the intermolecular interaction is described by two reversible reactions producing two supramolecular aggregates. The severe overlappings expected among the characteristic peaks of the original solute and aggregates make conventional one-dimensional spectra difficult to accurately reflect the physiochemical nature of the intermolecular interaction. The double asynchronous orthogonal sample design (DAOSD) approach is utilized to analyze the simulated data for proof-of-principle demonstration. The patterns of cross-peaks are much more complex compared with the intermolecular interaction described by only a single reaction. Four major groups of cross-peaks with characteristic patterns observed in the pair of DAOSD asynchronous spectra are systematically analyzed and classified. Further analysis of the spectral feature of the cross-peaks of the DAOSD asynchronous spectra is helpful to exact additional information concerning the variation of the peak position and peak width of the aggregates compared with those of the original solute. The result is important to reveal the physicochemical nature of intermolecular interaction between the solutes (e.g., changes in conformation, dynamical behavior, etc.). The pattern of cross-peaks in the corresponding 2D asynchronous spectra may become rather complex when the peak position, peak width, and peak intensity of two supramolecular aggregates change simultaneously. Further work using artificial intelligence techniques to interpret the complex cross-peaks is still being carried out.

ABSTRACT

Objective To propose a new multi-joint series venipuncture system, explore the mechanics and kinematics-based related control problems involved in needle insertion and needle picking during the puncture process, and verify feasibility of this system. Methods A puncture manipulator was built, and needle displacement control algorithm was proposed by combing with the puncture mechanics model. The the forward kinematics was calculated by using DH method, so as to obtain the tip coordinates. Then the inverse kinematics was calculated by using the geometric method. The forward and inverse processes were closely connected. The position error of the end coordinates before and after needle picking was compared by using the method of kinematics positive solution-inverse solution-re-positive solution. Finally, experimental verification and simulation were conducted by combining with the physical object. Results Through simulation and experiments, accuracy of the theoretical model was verified. The needle insertion algorithm could be used to achieve success with only one needle insertion, which provided theoretical basis for the control of robot arm. The position error before and after needle picking could be controlled within 1 mm from the end trajectory. The end needle tip of robot arm was almost kept fixed during the needle picking process. Therefore, this needle picking scheme was feasible and could basically verify that the needle picking action of robot arm met the accuracy and safety requirements. Conclusions The venipuncture manipulator truly simulates the needle insertion and needle picking action during the puncture process, and can safely and accurately realize the needle insertion and needle picking action with needle tip as the fixed point, indicating that it has certain clinical value.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To summarize the genetic and clinical phenotypic characteristics of patients with early-onset myopathy, areflexia, respiratory distress and dysphagia (EMARDD) caused by multiple epidermal growth factor 10 (MEGF10) gene defect. Methods: The clinical data of 3 infants in 1 family with EMARDD caused by MEGF10 gene defect diagnosed in the Department of Neonatology, Xiamen Children's Hospital in April 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. Using "multiple epidermal growth factor 10" "myopathy" or "MEGF10" "myopathy" as the key words, and searching the relevant literature reports of CNKI, Wanfang Database and PubMed Database from the establishment of the database to September 2022. Combined with this family, the main clinical information and genotype characteristics of EMARDD patients caused by MEGF10 gene defect were summarized. Results: The proband, male, first infant of monozygotic twins, was admitted to hospital 7 days after birth "due to intermittent cyanosis with weak sucking". The infant had dysphagia accompanied with cyanosis of lips during feeding and crying after birth. Physical examination on admission revealed reduced muscle tone of the extremities, flexion of the second to fifth fingers of both hands with limited passive extension of proximal interphalangeal joints, and limited abduction of both hips. He was diagnosed as dysphagia of newborn, congenital dactyly. After admission, he was given limb and oral rehabilitation training, breathing gradually became stable and oral feeding fully allowed, and discharged along with improvement. The younger brother of the proband was admitted to the hospital at the same time, and his clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment process were the same as those of the proband. The elder brother of the proband died at the age of 8 months due to the delayed growth and development, severe malnutrition, hypotonia, single palmoclal crease and weak crying. A whole exon sequencing of the family was done, and found that the 3 children were all compound heterozygous variations at the same site of MEGF10 gene, with 2 splicing variants (c.218+1G>A, c.2362+1G>A), which came from the father and mother respectively, and the new variation was consistent with the autosomal recessive inheritance model. Three children were finally diagnosed as EMARDD caused by MEGF10 gene defect. There are 0 Chinese literature and 18 English literature that met the search conditions. Totally 17 families including 28 patients were reported. There were 31 EMARDD patients including 3 infants from this family. Among them, there were 13 males and 18 females. The reported age of onset ranged from 0 to 61 years. Except for 5 patients with incomplete clinical data, 26 patients were included in the analysis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. The clinical features were mainly dyspnea (25 cases), scoliosis (22 cases), feeding difficulties (21 cases), myasthenia (20 cases), and other features including areflexia (16 cases) and cleft palate or high palatal arch(15 cases). Muscle biopsy showed non-specific changes, with histological characteristics ranging from slight muscle fiber size variation to minicores change which was seen in all 5 patients with at least 1 missense mutation of allele. In addition, the adult onset was found in patients with at least 1 missense variant of MEGF10 gene. Conclusions: MEGF10 gene defect related EMARDD can occur in the neonatal period, and the main clinical features are muscle weakness, breathing and feeding difficulties. Patients with myopathy who have at least 1 missense mutation and muscle biopsy indicating minicores change may be relatively mild.

ABSTRACT

Lattice regularization of chiral fermions has been a long-standing problem in physics. In this Letter, we present the density matrix renormalization group simulation of the 3-4-5-0 model of (1+1)D chiral fermions with an anomaly-free chiral U(1) symmetry, which contains two left-moving and two right-moving fermions carrying U(1) charges 3,4 and 5,0, respectively. Following the Wang-Wen chiral fermion model, we realize the chiral fermions and their mirror partners on the opposite boundaries of a thin strip of (2+1)D lattice model of multilayer Chern insulator, whose finite width implies the quantum system is effectively (1+1)D. By introducing two sets of carefully designed six-fermion local interactions to the mirror sector only, we demonstrate that the mirror fermions can be gapped out by the interaction beyond a critical strength without breaking the chiral U(1) symmetry, via the symmetric mass generation mechanism. We show that the interaction-driven gapping transition is in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class. We determine the evolution of Luttinger parameters before the transition, which confirms that the transition happens exactly at the point when the interaction term becomes marginal. As the mirror sector is gapped after the transition, we check that the fermions in the light chiral fermion sector remain gapless, which provides the desired lattice regularization of chiral fermions.

ABSTRACT

A supramolecular complex may be formed by two solutes via a weak intermolecular interaction in a solution. The spectrum of the complex is often inundated by the spectra of the solutes that are not involved in the intermolecular interaction. Herein, a novel spectral analysis approach is proposed to retrieve the spectrum of the supramolecular complex. First, a two-dimensional (2D) asynchronous spectrum is constructed. Then, a genetic algorithm is used to obtain a heuristic spectrum of the supramolecular complex. The heuristic spectrum is a linear combination of the spectrum of the complex and the spectrum of a solute. The coefficients of the linear combination are then obtained, according to which the equilibrium constants are invariant among the sample solutions used to construct the 2D asynchronous spectrum. We have applied the approach to a supramolecular system formed by benzene and I2. In the analysis, several binding models are evaluated, and a benzene molecule interacting with two iodine molecules via halogen bonding turns out to be the only possible model. Hence, the characteristic band of the benzene/I2 supramolecular complex around 1819 cm-1 in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum and the corresponding equilibrium constant are obtained. The above results indicate that the novel approach provides a chance to get new insight into various intermolecular interactions studied by spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a global health threat. Attentional bias influences smoking behaviors. Although attentional bias retraining has shown benefits and recent advances in technology suggest that attentional bias retraining can be delivered via smartphone apps, there is a paucity of research on this topic. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address this gap by exploring the use of attentional bias retraining via a novel smartphone app using a mixed methods pilot study. In the quantitative phase, it is hypothesized that participants in the training group who undertake attentional bias retraining via the app should have decreased levels of attentional bias, subjective craving, and smoking frequency, compared with those in the control group who do not undertake attentional bias retraining. The qualitative phase explores how the participants perceive and experience the novel app. METHODS: In all, 10 adult smokers (3 females and 7 males) between the ages of 26 and 56 years (mean 34.4 years, SD 9.97 years) were recruited. The participants were randomly allocated to the training and control groups. In weeks 1 and 3, participants from both groups attempted the standard visual probe task and rated their smoking frequency and subjective craving. In week 2, the participants in the training group attempted the modified visual probe task. After week 3, participants from both groups were interviewed about their views and experiences of the novel app. RESULTS: The results of the quantitative analysis did not support this study's hypothesis. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results yielded 5 themes: ease, helpfulness, unhelpful aspects, barriers, and refinement. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from the qualitative study were consistent with those from previous studies on health-related smartphone apps. The qualitative results were helpful in understanding the user perspectives and experiences of the novel app, indicating that future research in this innovative area is necessary.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the optimum time of ambulation of atrial fibrillation patients after radiofrequency ablation, to provide basis for patients' early postoperative rehabilitation.Methods:By convenient sampling method, a total of 120 patients with atrial fibrillation after radiofrequency ablation were collected at Yanghu Branch and City Branch of Changzhou Second People's Hospital from January 2020 to May 2021. They were divided into the early group, middle group and late group according to the random number table method, each group were 40 cases. All patients received routine postoperative intervention, the time of ambulation were 4, 6 and 12 h after operation in the early group, middle group and late group, respectively. The complication rate within 24 h after operation was compared among the three groups, and the comfort level of the three groups at 24, 48 and 72 h after operation was evaluated with Comfort Status Scale (GCQ).Results:Finally, 111 patients were included, including 37 in the early group, 38 in the middle group and 36 in the late group. There was no significant difference in the incidence of bleeding or hematoma, urinary retention, lumbago within 24 h after operation among the three groups ( P>0.05). The incidence of postural hypotension within 24 h after operation in the early group was 2.7% (1/37), which was lower than 21.1% (7/38) and 25.0% (9/36) in the middle and late groups, with a statistically significant difference ( χ2=4.86, 7.67, both P<0.05). At 48 and 72 h after operation, the scores of physiological dimension, psychological dimension and the total score of GCQ in the early group were (20.68 ± 3.07), (22.54 ± 3.35), (81.68 ± 6.11) and (22.54 ± 3.73), (24.38 ± 2.49), (84.92 ± 6.37), higher than those in the middle group (19.16 ± 2.19), (21.32 ± 2.27), (78.24 ± 5.58), (20.93 ± 2.85), (22.32 ± 2.04), (81.66 ± 6.56), and those in the late group (18.44 ± 1.50) (21.31 ± 1.99), (78.06 ± 4.32), (20.89 ± 2.25), (21.58 ± 1.86), (80.28 ± 6.44), the differences were statistically significant ( t values were 2.19-4.15, all P<0.05). Conclusions:Ambulation at 4 h after operation does not increase peripheral vascular complications, but can reduce the incidence of postural hypotension and improve the comfort of patients with atrial fibrillation after radiofrequency ablation.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effects of hospital-to-community model-based case management on outcomes and life quality of patients with atrial fibrillation.Methods:By convience sampling method, a total of 90 cases of atrial fibrillation patients admitted to Changzhou Second People′s Hospital from January 2019 to May 2020 were randomly divided into control group and experimental group, with 45 cases in each group. The patients in the control group received routine nursing care, the experimental group implemented hospital-to-community model-based case management. The beliefs about medicine, medication compliance, quality of life and readmissions of cardiovascular events were compared between 2 groups before and 6 months after intervention.Results:Finally, 41 cases were included in the experimental group and 38 cases in the control group. Before intervention, there were no significant differences in various indexes between the two groups ( P>0.05). After 6 months of intervention, the scores of specific-necessity in Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire-Specific (BMQ-Specific) and Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) were (16.98 ± 4.22) and (7.15 ± 0.69) points in the experimental group, higher than in the control group (14.95 ± 4.33) and (6.32 ± 1.07) points; the scores of specific-concerns in BMQ-Specific were (6.83 ± 1.91)points in the experimental group, lower than in the control group (8.42 ± 2.73) points. The differences were statistically significant ( t = 2.11, 4.07, 2.98, all P<0.05); the scores of physical function, role-physical, pain, general health, mental health dimensions and total scores in SF-36 were (80.37 ± 3.46), (46.63 ± 14.54), (90.37 ± 5.78), (70.07 ± 9.98), (84.20 ± 8.73) and (584.88 ± 25.71) points in the experimental group, higher than in the control group (70.13 ± 11.20), (37.34 ± 10.25), (83.37 ± 6.89), (59.55 ± 7.98), (77.58 ± 9.09) and (533.87 ± 31.62) points, the differences were statistically significant ( t values were 3.30-7.89, all P<0.05). At 6 months after discharge, the re-admission of cardiovascular events were 5 cases (12.2%) in the experimental group and 12 cases (31.6%) in the control group, the difference was statistically significant ( χ2=4.74, P<0.05). Conclusions:Hospital-to-community model-based case management can effectively promote beliefs about medicine and medication compliance, improve quality of life and decrease re-admission of cardiovascular events of patients with atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the influence of acupuncture on microcirculation perfusion of the pericardium meridian and heart in acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) rats and evaluate whether acupuncture can simultaneously affect the meridians and corresponding viscera. Additionally, acupoints at different meridians were compared and whether they exert the same effects was discussed.@*METHODS@#Totally 32 Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to left anterior descending (LAD) ligation to develop an AMI model. Rats were divided into 4 groups, including AMI, acupuncture Neiguan (PC 6), Lieque (LU 7) and Qiansanli (LI 10) groups (n=8). Eight rats received only thoracotomy (sham-operated group). The rats in the acupuncture groups received manual acupuncture at PC 6, LU 7 and LI 10 acupoints for 15 min, respectively. The microcirculation perfusion of pericardium meridian and heart was monitored by laser speckle perfusion imager (LSPI) before, during and after acupuncture manipulation for 15 min. Subsequently, the perfusion unit (PU) was calculated and analyzed by PSI System.@*RESULTS@#After LAD, compared to pre-acupuncture stage, the heart microcirculation perfusion (HMP) in the AMI group decreased continuously at during-acupuncture (P>0.05) and post-acupuncture stages (P0.05). Compared to pre-acupuncture stage, the PMP and HMP in PC 6 group significantly increased during acupuncture manipulation (both P0.05); however, they were significantly reduced after acupuncture manipulation (both P<0.05). Additionally, HMP of LI 10 group was decreased significantly during acupuncture, especially compared to pre-acupuncture stage (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Acupuncture at PC 6 obviously increased the PMP and HMP in AMI rats, and the effects were superior to at LU 7 and LI 10 acupoints. It was further confirmed that acupuncture promoted qi and blood circulation, indicating that acupoint specificity exists and features a meridian-propagated effect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To obtain a more suitable puncture method for venipuncture robot through experiments.Methods By using different puncture speeds and angles for biomimetic materials, the force-time curves by various puncture methods were obtained. Results During puncture process, with the increase of the puncture angle, a smaller puncture force was required. The faster puncture speed would lead to a larger puncture force. Conclusions The 40°-45° puncture angleand the 120-300 mm/min puncture speed should be used for designing the puncture method of venipuncture robot. The results provide references for selecting the puncture angle and speed of the venipuncture robot.

ABSTRACT

Neonatal seizures are the most common clinical manifestations of critically ill neonates and often suggest serious diseases and complicated etiologies. The precise diagnosis of this disease can optimize the use of anti-seizure medication, reduce hospital costs, and improve the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. Currently, a few artificial intelligence-assisted diagnosis and treatment systems have been developed for neonatal seizures, but there is still a lack of high-level evidence for the diagnosis and treatment value in the real world. Based on an artificial intelligence-assisted diagnosis and treatment systems that has been developed for neonatal seizures, this study plans to recruit 370 neonates at a high risk of seizures from 6 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in China, in order to evaluate the effect of the system on the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of neonatal seizures in neonates with different gestational ages in the NICU. In this study, a diagnostic study protocol is used to evaluate the diagnostic value of the system, and a randomized parallel-controlled trial is designed to evaluate the effect of the system on the treatment and prognosis of neonates at a high risk of seizures. This multicenter prospective study will provide high-level evidence for the clinical application of artificial intelligence-assisted diagnosis and treatment systems for neonatal seizures in the real world.

ABSTRACT

The interplay among topology, superconductivity, and magnetism promises to bring a plethora of exotic and unintuitive behaviors in emergent quantum materials. The family of Fe-chalcogenide superconductors FeTexSe1-x are directly relevant in this context due to their intrinsic topological band structure, high-temperature superconductivity, and unconventional pairing symmetry. Despite enormous promise and expectation, the local magnetic properties of FeTexSe1-x remain largely unexplored, which prevents a comprehensive understanding of their underlying material properties. Exploiting nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, here we report nanoscale quantum sensing and imaging of magnetic flux generated by exfoliated FeTexSe1-x flakes, demonstrating strong correlation between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in FeTexSe1-x. The coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in an established topological superconductor opens up new opportunities for exploring exotic spin and charge transport phenomena in quantum materials. The demonstrated coupling between NV centers and FeTexSe1-x may also find applications in developing hybrid architectures for next-generation, solid-state-based quantum information technologies.

ABSTRACT

Terbium acetylsalicylate has been prepared, and the ethanol solution of the complex exhibits strong luminescence under the excitation of ultraviolet radiation. When a small amount of bilirubin solution is introduced into the solution containing a high concentration of terbium acetylsalicylate, a remarkable diminution of the luminescence of the terbium complex was observed. Investigations on the behavior and life-time of luminescence indicate that the quenching is not caused by forming a stable non-luminescent product via a reaction between terbium acetylsalicylate and bilirubin. A π-π interaction between the chromophore of bilirubin and the aromatic moiety of ligand was revealed via the pattern of cross peaks in the 2D asynchronous spectrum generated using the DAOSD (double asynchronous orthogonal sample design) approach. Such an interaction paves a route for energy transfer in the quenching process. The combination of a high concentration of the terbium complex and a long life-time of luminescence in the lanthanide complex/bilirubin system forms a special scenario: a bilirubin molecule by diffusion may visit and deactivate dozens of excited terbium complexes within the half-life period of the lanthanide complex. This is why a small amount of bilirubin can bring about the significant reduction of luminescence on the solution containing a high concentration of the terbium complex.

ABSTRACT

Background: An unmet need for more effective and affordable kinase inhibitors remains in patients with progressive radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC) in China, where only sorafenib is approved for this indication. This study evaluated the 24-week objective response rate (ORR) to donafenib-a new, domestic multikinase inhibitor-in the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic RAIR-DTC in patients with measurable lesions. Two dose regimens (300 mg twice daily vs. 200 mg twice daily) were used to determine its optimal dosage and safety for further phase III studies. Methods: This study was a randomized, open-label, multicenter phase II trial. Thirty-five adult RAIR-DTC patients with at least one measurable targeted lesion according to RECIST 1.1 were enrolled from 12 centers in China and randomized to receive either 200 mg (17 patients) or 300 mg (18 patients) of donafenib orally twice daily for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was ORR, and the secondary endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS) among others. Additionally, biochemical (serum thyroglobulin) and structural (total tumor diameter [TTD]) responses were assessed, change (ΔTTD) rates were calculated, and safety was evaluated. Results: The ORRs for the 200- and 300-mg arms were 12.5% and 13.33% (p = 1.000), respectively. The 300-mg arm had a nonsignificant, longer median PFS than the 200-mg arm (14.98 months vs. 9.44 months) (p = 0.351). There was a trend toward more tumor shrinkage in the 300-mg arm compared with the 200-mg arm (average ΔTTD rate -0.52 ± 0.71 vs. -0.04 ± 1.55 mm/month, p = 0.103). Most treatment-related adverse events (AEs) in both arms were grades 1-2. The most common grade 3 treatment-related AEs in both arms were palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia and hypertension; the sum occurrence rates of these two AEs in the 200-mg and 300-mg arms were 11.43% and 22.86%, respectively. Conclusions: Donafenib was generally well tolerated. Both donafenib regimens demonstrated similar efficacy in terms of the ORR in locally advanced or metastatic RAIR-DTC. The results warrant further studies on donafenib as a new, feasible treatment option for RAIR-DTC patients. Clinical Trials.gov IDs: NCT02870569; CTR20160220.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the clinical studies on sacral nerve stimulation based on PubMed database and summarize its research status and clinical characteristics. Methods:Literatures about sacral nerve stimulation were collected from PubMed database before December 31, 2019. HistCite software was used to analyze the published year, published periodicals, published country and research institutions. Pajek software principal path analysis was used to identify the evolution direction of hot topics. The spectrum of diseases, therapeutic outcomes, stimulation methods and stimulation parameters were summarized. Results:A total of 96 articles were included. The number of publications increased significantly since 2000 and reached its peak in 2014 to 2015. The literatures with most influence were published in 2000 to 2001. All the literatures published in 32 journals, the top two were Urology and Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, which published 17 and 22 articles, respectively. The literatures came from 16 countries, and the top three were the United State (17 articles), the Netherlands (13) and the United Kingdom (13). Among the 211 institutes involved, Aarhus University Hospital (Denmark, twelve articles) and St. Marks Hospital (United Kingdom, nine) were the top two. The study involved 16 diseases, mainly about fecal incontinence, urinary incontinence and urination, shifted from urinary system diseases to digestive system diseases. 91.67% of the study corroborated the benefit of sacral nerve stimulation. Implanted stimulation (77 articles) was the most used, and transdermal stimulation (10 articles) was the second. The parameters were depending on the disease and the mode of stimulation. Conclusion:Sacral nerve stimulation can effectively improve the function of pelvic floor, which may be focused for a long time. Non-implantable sacral nerve stimulation would become the new research topic.

Systematic Absence of Cross Peaks (SACPs) in a two-dimensional (2D) asynchronous spectrum, a sensitive indicator of the signal purity, is very important in analyzing bilinear data. However, identification of SACPs in practice remains a challenge because of noise in the corresponding 2D asynchronous spectrum. We firstly show that SACP can be identified via a statistical test using a large amount of 2D asynchronous spectra. To meet the practical demand that SACPs must be identified based on a single 2D asynchronous spectrum in many cases, we use a 2D quotient spectrum (Q (x, y)) as an effective auxiliary tool to recognize SACPs. The expectation of Q(x, y) is zero when (x, y) is within SACP or background regions in the corresponding 2D asynchronous spectrum. When (x, y) is in a cross-peak region, the expectation of the absolute value of Q(x, y) is a constant regardless of whether the cross-peak in a 2D asynchronous spectrum is strong or weak. Thus, a unified threshold can be set up to differentiate the SACP region from cross-peak region via the auxiliary 2D quotient spectrum. We have applied this approach on two real-world examples and satisfactory results have been obtained. This result demonstrates that the statistical test with a 2D quotient spectrum is applicable in real-world systems.

ABSTRACT

The quantum neural network is one of the promising applications for near-term noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers. A quantum neural network distills the information from the input wave function into the output qubits. In this Letter, we show that this process can also be viewed from the opposite direction: the quantum information in the output qubits is scrambled into the input. This observation motivates us to use the tripartite information-a quantity recently developed to characterize information scrambling-to diagnose the training dynamics of quantum neural networks. We empirically find strong correlation between the dynamical behavior of the tripartite information and the loss function in the training process, from which we identify that the training process has two stages for randomly initialized networks. In the early stage, the network performance improves rapidly and the tripartite information increases linearly with a universal slope, meaning that the neural network becomes less scrambled than the random unitary. In the latter stage, the network performance improves slowly while the tripartite information decreases. We present evidences that the network constructs local correlations in the early stage and learns large-scale structures in the latter stage. We believe this two-stage training dynamics is universal and is applicable to a wide range of problems. Our work builds bridges between two research subjects of quantum neural networks and information scrambling, which opens up a new perspective to understand quantum neural networks.

ABSTRACT

Lens transparency is established by abundant accumulation of crystallin proteins and loss of organelles in the fiber cells. It requires an efficient translation of lens messenger RNAs (mRNAs) to overcome the progressively reduced transcriptional activity that results from denucleation. Inappropriate regulation of this process impairs lens differentiation and causes cataract formation. However, the regulatory mechanism promoting protein synthesis from lens-expressed mRNAs remains unclear. Here we show that in zebrafish, the RNA-binding protein Rbm24 is critically required for the accumulation of crystallin proteins and terminal differentiation of lens fiber cells. In the developing lens, Rbm24 binds to a wide spectrum of lens-specific mRNAs through the RNA recognition motif and interacts with cytoplasmic polyadenylation element-binding protein (Cpeb1b) and cytoplasmic poly(A)-binding protein (Pabpc1l) through the C-terminal region. Loss of Rbm24 reduces the stability of a subset of lens mRNAs encoding heat shock proteins and shortens the poly(A) tail length of crystallin mRNAs encoding lens structural components, thereby preventing their translation into functional proteins. This severely impairs lens transparency and results in blindness. Consistent with its highly conserved expression in differentiating lens fiber cells, the findings suggest that vertebrate Rbm24 represents a key regulator of cytoplasmic polyadenylation and plays an essential role in the posttranscriptional control of lens development.

ABSTRACT

An approach to construct a secondary asynchronous spectrum via sample-sample correlation (SASS) is proposed to analyze bilinear data from hyphenated spectroscopic experiments. In SASS, bilinear data is used to construct a series of two-dimensional (2D) sample-sample correlation spectra. Then a vertical slice is extracted from each 2D sample-sample correlation spectrum so that a secondary 2D asynchronous spectrum is constructed via these slices. The advantage of SASS is demonstrated by a model system with the following challenging situations: (1) Temporal profiles of different components severely overlap, making spectra of pure components difficult to directly obtain from either original bilinear data or multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) with non-negativity and unimodality constraints. (2) Every peak in the spectra of the eluted samples contains contributions from at least two components. Hence, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) and n-dimensional (nD) asynchronous spectroscopic method developed in our previous work, which previously worked so well, are now invalid. SASS managed to reveal different groups of systematic absences of cross peaks (SACPs) that reflect the lack of spectral contributions of different components at different regions in the second asynchronous spectrum. Spectra of different components can still be faithfully retrieved via MCR-ALS calculation using constraints revealed by different groups of SACPs. The results demonstrate that implicit but intrinsic information revealed by SASS is indispensable in solving challenging bilinear data as the model system. We applied SASS on two real-world examples from thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FT-IR) experiments of mixtures (H2O/HOD/D2O and H2O/isopropanol/pyridine). FT-IR spectra of different components were successfully recovered. Moreover, FT-IR spectrum of HOD, which is difficult to obtain, was successfully extracted. SASS can be applied in the analysis of gaseous mixtures from TG-FT-IR experiment and a combination of quantum cascade lasers with substrate-integrated hollow waveguides in environmental monitoring and biomedical diagnosis. Furthermore, SASS is also useful in various advanced hyphenated spectroscopic experiments.
