ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of community-based rehabilitation exercise and physical activity on the physical activity levels, functional states, and quality of life for people with mild and moderate disabilities in community settings, to ascertain the health benefits of their engagement in such fitness sports activities, anchoring in the WHO "Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030: More Active People for a Healthier World" and the guidelines tailored for people with disabilities, using the theoretical framework and methodology of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). MethodsAligning with the WHO guidelines for people with disabilities and the ICF, a community-based rehabilitation exercise and physical activity program was designed for individuals with mild to moderate disabilities, featuring activities like fitness training (aerobic and resistance exercises), skill exercises (such as balance and coordination), as well as sports and recreational games (ball and games, etc.). A total of 230 people with mild and moderate disabilities were recruited from 20 communities in Shenzhen, with types of disabilities including physical, speech, intellectual, and mental. Professional rehabilitation fitness instructors implemented and supervised the program. The activities were of low to moderate intensity, 30 to 50 minutes per session, five times a month for six months. The community-based rehabilitation exercise and physical activity progress of these individuals was surveyed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and their overall functioning was evaluated with WHODAS 2.0. The health-related quality of life was measured with WHOQOL-BREF. The health benefits from participation in community-based rehabilitation exercise and physical activity were assessed in terms of functioning, activity involvement, and quality of life. ResultsAfter the fitness activities, participation levels significantly increased in IPAQ domains of work-related, transport-related, domestic and gardening activity, and leisure time (|t| > 3.391, P < 0.001). The scores significantly decreased in the domains of cognition, activity, self-care, getting along, life activities and participation; and overall scores also decreased in WHODAS 2.0 (t > 6.639, P < 0.001). The scores significantly increased in the four dimensions of WHOQOL-BREF (|t| > 7.486, P < 0.001). ConclusionAfter participating in a six-month community-based rehabilitation exercise and physical activity program of mild to moderate intensity, individuals with mild to moderate disabilities have improved in physical activity and engagement levels, and the overall functioning and quality of life.

ABSTRACT

In order to induce a modified rabbit model of carotid atherosclerotic plaque suitable for the stroke study and to evaluate the lesion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Eight rabbits of group A were fed with high-fat diet only. Atherosclerosis at the right common carotid artery was induced in rabbits of group B (n = 12) by high-fat diet and balloon catheter injury to the endothelium 4 weeks later. The rabbits were examined in vivo with a 1.5-T MRI. After 4 weeks on the high-fat diet, the serum lipid levels were markedly increased, which became significantly higher than the baseline levels. The lesions on both MRI and histology were remarkable. One week after balloon injury, the signal of injured right common carotid was higher on all the contrast-weighted images than the left side. The extent of abnormal signal was reduced 9 weeks after balloon injury. Hemorrhage was detected on all the contrast-weighted images. In conclusion, the rabbit model established by the authors is such a feasible one to the study of stroke caused by carotid atherosclerosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the adverse effects of passive smoking on antioxidant capacity and spermiogenesis of the testis and epididymides in rats. Methods SD rats were exposed to smoke in a self-made passive smoking chamber twice a day for 48 days.At the end of the experiment, the right testis and epididymides homogenate were prepared and the level of SOD,GSH-Px, NOS,NO and MDA were measured respectively. The sperms of left epididymides were observed by light microscope for determining sperm density, motility, progressive motility, fast progressive motility. The microstructure changes of left testis were observed. Results In passive smoking group, the level of MDA was significantly increased(P

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the characteristics, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of incidental renal cell carcinoma(RCC).

METHODS109 cases of incidental RCC treated in 20 years were analyzed retrospectively and compared with 247 cases of non-incidental RCC.

RESULTSThe age, sex and side between incidental RCC and non-incidental RCC were not significant (P > 0.05). Compared to the non-incidental RCC,the diameter of incidental RCC [(4.1 +/- 1.7) cm] was smaller and its stage was lower (P < 0.01). Ultrasonography and CT can improve the detection rate of incidental RCC significantly, and operation is more effective for incidental RCC than for non-incidental RCC (P < 0.01). The 3 and 5 year cancer specific survival rates in patients with incidental RCC were higher than those of non-incidental RCC(P < 0.01). The detection rate of incidental RCC was higher from 1990 to 1999 (39.3%) than from 1980 to 1989 (15.6%) (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONSIncidental RCC is not another type of RCC, but a developing stage of RCC without appearance of a symptoms. Ultrasonography and CT are important to diagnose incidental RCC. Low pathological stage, small size, early diagnosis, and radical nephrectomy indicate better prognosis of incidental RCC.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate Tornwaldt′s cyst using MR imaging. Methods 1 452 cases with head MR imaging were reviewed. The signal intensity, shape, and size of the lesions were observed. Results Tornwaldt′s cyst were found in 18 of 1 452 cases (1 24%), all of the 18 cases were isointense to CSF on T 2WI and hyperintense to muscle on T 1WI.Tornwaldt′s cyst were round ( n =13)and ovoid ( n =5). The size of lesions were from 2 mm to 15 mm. There were 15 cases with adenoid hyperplasia. Conclusions Tornwaldt′s cysts occupied 1 24% in routine head MR imaging and were hyperintense to muscle on T 1WI and isointense to CSF ON T 2WI.
