ABSTRACT

Mental fatigue (MF) occurs when a demanding cognitive-task is performed over a long period of time, making it difficult to continue daily tasks and maintain balance. The aim of this investigation was to determine whether the Stroop test induces mental fatigue and to examine its effects on static balance. The study is a quasi-experimental design with pre-post testing. Twenty participants (19-44) were included. Static posturography was used to evaluate balance at baseline following a 25-min relaxation period of rest and in the MFC (mental-fatigue condition) following the induction of MF with the Stroop test. The other measurements were the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The study found that mental fatigue significantly increased at MFC compared to baseline, as indicated by MFI (p=.031) and FSS (p=.007) results with moderate effect sizes (d = 0.52, d = 0.67, respectively). Similarly, the study found a statistically significant increase in mental fatigue as measured by VAS results (p=.000, d = 0.95). However, the study did not find any statistically significant impairment in static balance due to mental fatigue in healthy young subjects. The results suggest that the Stroop test can induce mental fatigue, but it does not impair static balance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Our review aims to analyze the effect of dual-task training (DTT) on balance in healthy older adults. METHODS: PubMed, EbscoHost, Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EBSCO Open Dissertations, ULAKBIM (TR Index) and YOK (Council of Higher Education Thesis Center) databases and the gray literature were searched. The quality of the studies was assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and statistical analysis of the data was performed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software. A funnel plot and Egger's test were used to detect publication bias. Fourteen studies with 691 participants were included. RESULTS: According to the results of our study, DTT was found to have a significant benefit on balance in older adults than the non-intervention group (standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.691: -1.153, -0.229, 95 % confidence interval (CI)). Furthermore, DTT was superior to different intervention groups in improving balance in older adults (SMD: -0.229: -0.441, -0.016, 95 % CI). CONCLUSION: The findings of this review suggest that DTT may be an effective intervention to improve balance in healthy older adults.

ABSTRACT

Elastic therapeutic taping is utilized for prevention and treatment of various neuromusculoskeletal disorders and sports injuries. Kinesio taping (KT) is a popular version of this practice. Despite being widely used to improve muscular function, an understanding of KT effects on muscular mechanics are lacking. Considering the continuity of the fascial system and its mechanical interaction with muscle fascicles intramuscularly, the aim was to test the following hypothesis: mechanical loading induced on the skin by KT leads to along-muscle fascicle local length changes and shear strains in the targeted muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based local tissue deformation analyses and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based fiber tracking analyzes were combined. Anatomical MRI and DTI were acquired for 5 healthy female volunteers in 3 conditions: (1) without tape, (2) following sham application, and (3) after KT application. Local length changes and shear strains were calculated using image registration between conditions (1-2) and (2-3). Non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to compare the two conditions. Data pooled from all subjects show that KT-imposed along-muscle fascicle lengthening (mean ± SD 0.026 ± 0.020), shortening (0.032 ± 0.027) and shearing (0.087 ± 0.049) occur and are significantly higher than those caused by sham application (0.012 ± 0.010; 0.013 ± 0.015; 0.029 ± 0.021, respectively) (p < 0.001). KT induced along-muscle fascicle length changes locally show heterogeneity. Our findings indicate that KT affects both along-muscle fascicle length changes and shear strains. This can be explained by KT imposed myofascial loads over the skin being transmitted via the fascial system, non-uniformly manipulating the mechanical equilibrium locally at different parts along the muscle fascicles.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of cooled and room temperature irrigation on the preoperative and early postoperative corneal endothelial parameter values in posterior vitrectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, comparative study, 68 patients underwent a standard 3-port, 23-G posterior vitrectomy operation by a single surgeon. Cooled irrigation solution was applied to 36 patients during surgery (group 1), and room temperature irrigation solution was applied to 32 patients (group 2). The patients were also divided into four groups according to their history of noncomplicated cataract surgery (phakic or pseudophakic) and the types of tamponade used (silicone or gas). The central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell density (ECD), mean cell area (MCA), hexagonal cell percent, and coefficient of variation of cell area (CV) parameter values of the groups at preoperative and postoperative 1 month were compared. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative corneal parameter values in groups 1 and 2 ( P >0.05). However, it was remarkable that the percentage of preoperative-postoperative change in all the corneal parameter values was higher in group 2. When the results of the subgroup analyses of the patients who were pseudophakic and used gas tamponade (Group D) in group 2 were examined, it was determined that the negative effects were significantly higher in the postoperative values for the ECD, MCA, CV, and CCT parameters compared with the preoperative values ( P <0.05). CONCLUSION: In patients with pseudophakia and gas tamponade, cooled irrigation was found to be more advantageous for corneal parameters.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Although functional effects of kinesio taping (KT) have been widely studied, its effects on contractile properties of the target muscle remain unclear. Tensiomyography is suitable for quantifying muscle stiffness and rate of force development upon imposed twitch contraction. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that KT has effects on contractile properties of targeted muscle using tensiomyography. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTINGS: Performance laboratory of a sports rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 11 healthy volunteers. INTERVENTIONS: Tensiomyography measurements before KT facilitation technique applied (pre-KT), 45 minutes, and 24 hours after KT (post-KT1 and post-KT2, respectively) without removing the tape. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Maximal radial displacement, contraction time, delay time, sustain time, relaxation time, and velocity of contraction. RESULTS: Significant effects were shown for maximal radial displacement (P = .004), contraction time (P = .013), relaxation time (P = .035), and velocity of contraction (P = .0033), but not for delay time (P = .060) and sustain time (P = .078). Post hoc testing indicated a significant decrease in maximal radial displacement for post-KT1 only (from 6.33 [1.46] to 4.87 [2.14] mm), and a significant increase in contraction time for both post-KT1 and post-KT2 (from 30.87 [11.39] to 39.71 [13.49] ms, and 37.41 [14.73] ms, respectively). Post hoc testing also showed a significant decrease in relaxation time for post-KT2 (from 65.97 [53.43] to 47.45 [38.12] ms), and a significant decrease in velocity of contraction for both post-KT1 and post-KT2 (from 0.22 [0.08] to 0.15 [0.09] mm/s, and 0.16 [0.07] mm/s), respectively. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that KT leads to an increased muscle stiffness and a reduced muscle rate of force production despite the facilitation technique applied.

There have been limited cases of pedunculated basal cell carcinoma (BCC) reported in the literature. The dermoscopic features were described in only one of them. However, not one of them described the confocal microscopy features. In this report we presented a case of pedunculated basal cell carcinoma (BCC) with dermoscopic and reflectance confocal microscopy features.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Prophylactic knee braces are largely used in the prevention of ligament injuries, but their effectiveness on performance are still controversial. The aim of this study was to determine which brace was the most effective on functional performance. METHOD: Twenty-four healthy subjects (14 men and 10 women), between the age of 18 and 22 with no prior history of lower limb injury and brace use, voluntarily participated in this study. Five different prophylactic knee braces were used. The test protocol consisted of dynamic balance, jumping performance, proprioception, coordination, and maximal force. Balance was assessed by the Y balance test; jumping performance was assessed by vertical jump and one-leg hop tests; maximal force, proprioception, and coordination were assessed by using functional squat testing. Proprioceptive test was performed by using the functional squat system machine that the participants were instructed to keep the crosshair on the line, even after the visual aid had disappeared. The subjects without a brace and with the brace by using 5 different braces (DonJoy-USA) were evaluated by five different therapists. RESULTS: Hinged "H" buttress for the support of the knee brace was found to be more effective than the others in terms of balance. Drytex economy hinged knee brace had the best result in terms of proprioception and maximal force. There were no significant differences in vertical jump and one-leg hop tests (n.s.). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the hinged "H" buttress for support of the knee brace and Drytex economy hinged knee brace produced the best results on the performance parameters. The other three braces demonstrated more variable and less optimal results. Prophylactic knee braces can be used for both healthy subjects and athletes to enhance proprioception, coordination, maximal force, and balance, but it is important to choose the best proper brace to the individuals according to their fitness level.
