ABSTRACT

AIM: This study's aim is to determine the relationship between care burden, perceived social support, coping attitudes and life satisfaction of mothers with children with cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted in Turkey between March and June 2022 to determine the relationship between caregiving burden, perceived social support, coping attitudes and life satisfaction of 122 mothers with CP children. Path analysis was used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: Correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between mothers' social support perceptions and life satisfaction and coping attitudes, a positive relationship between their life satisfaction and coping attitudes (p < .001). The path analysis showed that the social support perceived by the mothers significantly affected their coping attitudes (ß = .257; p < .001) and life satisfaction (ß = .081; p < .001). Mothers' care burden (ß = .169; p < .001) and coping attitudes (ß = .071; p < .05) also had a significant effect on their life satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: It is an important finding of this study that mothers' perceptions of social support and coping attitudes have a positive effect on their life satisfaction. Long-term care can cause physical and psychological problems for mothers. Mothers' strong coping strategies and high levels of social support may reduce the occurrence of these problems. Drawing attention to this issue in mothers and revealing the effects of these variables is important in terms of indirectly supporting child outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Background: Children hospitalized for cancer treatment are known to experience high levels of anxiety. This study aimed to examine the effects of making jewelry from beads on the state and trait anxiety levels of children with cancer. Methods: This parallel group, randomized controlled trial was conducted on 62 children aged 7-18 who were being treated for cancer. The children were selected using the random sampling method. The jewelry-making sessions with the children in the intervention group were held twice a week for four weeks. Data were analysed using the chi-square test, the Student's t-test, the independent samples t-test and linear regression. Results: The state anxiety levels of the children in the intervention group decreased both in the first week and the fourth week after making jewelry. The difference in the average post-test scores between the two groups was found to be significant (p < .05). The fourth week average trait anxiety score of the children in the intervention group decreased (M = 33.2) in comparison to the average score of the control group (M = 36.5). The difference between the two groups was found to be significant (p < .001). Discussion: This study found that the activity of making jewelry from beads was effective in reducing the state and trait anxiety levels of children with cancer.

ABSTRACT

In this study, novel p-benzimidazole-derived calix[4]arene compounds with different structures, and a benzothiazole-derived calix[4]arene compound, were synthesized by a microwave-assisted method and their structures were determined by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The effects of functional calixarenes against bacterial (pBR322 plasmid DNA) and eukaryotic DNA (calf thymus DNA = CT-DNA) were investigated. The studies with plasmid DNA have shown that compounds 6 and 10 containing methyl and benzyl groups, respectively, have DNA cleavage activity at the highest concentrations (10 000 µM). Interactions with plasmid DNA using some restriction enzymes (BamHI and HindIII) were also investigated. The binding ability of p-substituted calix[4]arene compounds towards CT-DNA was examined using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and it was determined that some compounds showed efficiency. In particular, it was observed that the functional compounds (10 and 5) containing benzyl and chloro-groups had higher activity (K b binding constants were found to be 7.1 × 103 M-1 and 9.3 × 102 M-1 respectively) on DNA than other compounds. Competitive binding experiments using ethidium bromide also gave an idea about the binding properties. Docking studies of the synthesized compounds with DNA were performed to predict the binding modes, affinities and noncovalent interactions stabilizing the DNA-compound complexes at the molecular level. Docking results were in good agreement with the experimental findings on the DNA binding activities of compounds. Based on these results, this preliminary study could shed light on future experimental antibacterial and/or anticancer research.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a study on the removal of azo dyes (Reactive Black 5, Trapaeolin 000, Methyl Orange and Direct Violet 51) with calix[n]arene derivatives from aqueous solution into the organic phase in order to explore the potential use of calixarenes as low-cost efficient extractants for wastewater dye removal. The carboxylic acid derivative of calix[8]arene shows highest affinity towards the azo dyes. The influence of NaCl (present in the solution) on extraction process was also studied. The extent of the dye removal increased with the addition of NaCl. The proposed extraction mechanism involves several kinds of interactions: electrostatic repulsion between carboxylic acid groups of calix[8]arenes and sulfonate groups of azo dyes, hydrogen bonding and formation of an inclusion complex due to three dimensional cavity type calix[n]arene molecules through host-guest interactions.

ABSTRACT

Three beta-cyclodextrin (polymers 1-3) and a starch-based (polymer 4) polymers were synthesized using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) as a cross-linking agent in dry dimethylformamide and used as a sorbent for the removal of some selected azo dyes from aqueous solutions. The cross-linked polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analysis. Results of sorption showed that cyclodextrin and starch based polymers can be effectively used as a sorbent for the removal of anionic azo dyes. The Influence of the amide groups and the chemical structure of azo dyes are also studied. Results of sorption experiments showed that these adsorbent exhibited high sorption capacities toward Direct Violent 51 (80% for polymer 1, 69% for polymer 2, 70% for polymer 3 and 78% for polymer 4). The sorption capacity of dyes on the polymers was dependent on the presence of sulfonate groups of the anionic dyes. In order to explain the results an adsorption mechanism mainly physical adsorption and interactions such as hydrogen bonding, ion-exchange due to the nature of the polymer network and the formation of an inclusion complex due to the beta-CD molecules through host-guest interaction is proposed.
