ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of topical application of a neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R) antagonist in a rabbit model of nonallergic ocular redness. Methods: Nonallergic ocular redness was induced in rabbits by a single, topical application of dapiparzole hydrochloride eye drops (0.5%, 1%, 2%, or 5%). The NK1R antagonist L-703,606 was topically applied to the eye at the same time of induction or 20 min after induction, and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) treatment served as the control. Superior bulbar conjunctival images were taken every 30 s for the first 2 min, followed by every 4 min for 8 min, and then every 10 min until 1 h. The severity of ocular redness was evaluated on the images using ImageJ-based ocular redness index (ORI) calculations. Results: The ORI scores were significantly increased after the application of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, or 5% dapiparzole at each time point evaluated, with the most severe redness induced by the 5% dapiprazole that led to a maximal mean increase in ORI score of 14 at 20 min post-induction and thus used for subsequent evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of NK1R antagonism. Topical L-703,606, when applied at the same time as dapiprazole induction, significantly suppressed the increase of ORI scores at all time points (∼40% decrease). Furthermore, when applied at 20 min after dapiprazole induction, L-703,606 rapidly and effectively suppressed the increase of ORI scores at 30, 40, 50, and 60 min (∼30% decrease). Conclusions: Topical blockade of NK1R effectively prevents and alleviates nonallergic ocular redness in a novel animal model.

ABSTRACT

Non-destructive measurements of low-intensity charged particle beams are particularly challenging for beam diagnostics. At the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL), beams with weak currents below 1 µA are often provided for experiments. The detection of such low beam current is below the threshold of typical standard beam current transformers. Therefore, a low-intensity monitoring system is developed by using a sensitive capacitive pick-up (PU) and low-noise electronics. This device measures beam currents by digitally analyzing the amplitude of the PU signals using a homodyne detection scheme. During lab tests, the amplitude nonlinearity is <0.5% in the operational range of 1 nA-45 µA and the amplitude resolution is 0.94 nA. At present, four measurement systems for low beam currents are installed at HIRFL for the monitoring of standard operating conditions with low beam currents below 1 µA. After an absolute calibration with a Faraday cup, it can be used for accurate beam intensity measurement with a current resolution of about 1 nA.

ABSTRACT

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with active COVID-19 infection often have more severe symptoms and worse recovery. COVID-19 infection can cause gut microbiota dysbiosis, which is also a risk factor for poor outcomes in AIS patients. However, the association between gut microbiota and functional outcomes among AIS patients with COVID-19 infection has not been fully clarified yet. In this study, we performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize the gut microbial community among AIS patients with acute COVID-19 infection, AIS patients with post-acute COVID-19 infection, and AIS patients without COVID-19 infection. We found that AIS patients with acute COVID-19 experienced poorer recovery and significant gut dysbiosis, characterized by higher levels of Enterobacteriaceae and lower levels of Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae. Furthermore, a shorter time window (less than 28 days) between COVID-19 infection and stroke was identified as a risk factor for poor functional outcomes in AIS patients with COVID-19, and the enrichment of Enterobacteriaceae was indicated as a mediator in the relationship between infection time window and poor stroke outcomes. Our findings highlight the importance of early intervention after COVID-19 infection, especially by regulating the gut microbiota, which plays a role in the prognosis of AIS patients with COVID-19 infection.IMPORTANCEThe gut microbiota plays an important role in the association between respiratory system and cerebrovascular system through the gut-lung axis and gut-brain axis. However, the specific connection between gut bacteria and the functional outcomes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with COVID-19 is not fully understood yet. In our study, we observed a significant decrease in bacterial diversity and shifts in the abundance of key bacterial families in AIS patients with acute COVID-19 infection. Furthermore, we identified that the time window was a critical influence factor for stroke outcomes, and the enrichment of Enterobacteriaceae acted as a mediator in the relationship between the infection time window and poor stroke outcomes. Our research provides a new perspective on the complex interplay among AIS, COVID-19 infection, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Moreover, recognizing Enterobacteriaceae as a potential mediator of poor stroke prognosis offers a novel avenue for future exploration and therapeutic interventions.

ABSTRACT

Background: It introduced an artefactual field experiment to analyze the influence of incentives from fee-for-service (FFS) and diagnosis-intervention package (DIP) payments on physicians' provision of medical services. Methods: This study recruited 32 physicians from a national pilot city in China and utilized an artefactual field experiment to examine medical services provided to patients with different health status. Results: In general, the average quantities of medical services provided by physicians under the FFS payment were higher than the optimal quantities, the difference was statistically significant. While the average quantities of medical services provided by physicians under the DIP payment were very close to the optimal quantities, the difference was not statistically significant. Physicians provided 24.49, 14.31 and 5.68% more medical services to patients with good, moderate and bad health status under the FFS payment than under the DIP payment. Patients with good, moderate and bad health status experienced corresponding losses of 5.70, 8.10 and 9.42% in benefits respectively under the DIP payment, the corresponding reductions in profits for physicians were 10.85, 20.85 and 35.51%. Conclusion: It found patients are overserved under the FFS payment, but patients in bad health status can receive more adequate treatment. Physicians' provision behavior can be regulated to a certain extent under the DIP payment and the DIP payment is suitable for the treatment of patients in relatively good health status. Doctors sometimes have violations under DIP payment, such as inadequate service and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to innovate the supervision of physicians' provision behavior under the DIP payment. It showed both medical insurance payment systems and patients with difference health status can influence physicians' provision behavior.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate VEGF-C-induced lymphoproliferation in conjunction with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) antimetabolite treatment in a rabbit glaucoma filtration surgery (GFS) model. Methods: Thirty-two rabbits underwent GFS and were assigned to four groups (n = 8 each) defined by subconjunctival drug treatment: (a) VEGF-C combined with 5-FU, (b) 5-FU, (c) VEGF-C, (d) and control. Bleb survival, bleb measurements, and IOP were evaluated over 30 days. At the end, histology and anterior segment OCT were performed on some eyes. mRNA was isolated from the remaining eyes for RT-PCR evaluation of vessel-specific markers (lymphatics, podoplanin and LYVE-1; and blood vessels, CD31). Results: Qualitatively and quantitatively, VEGF-C combined with 5-FU resulted in blebs which were posteriorly longer and wider than the other conditions: vs. 5-FU (P = 0.043 for longer, P = 0.046 for wider), vs. VEGF-C (P < 0.001, P < 0.001) and vs. control (P < 0.001, P < 0.001). After 30 days, the VEGF-C combined with 5-FU condition resulted in longer bleb survival compared with 5-FU (P = 0.025), VEGF-C (P < 0.001), and control (P < 0.001). Only the VEGF-C combined with 5-FU condition showed a negative correlation between IOP and time that was statistically significant (r = -0.533; P = 0.034). Anterior segment OCT and histology demonstrated larger blebs for the VEGF-C combined with 5-FU condition. Only conditions including VEGF-C led to increased expression of lymphatic markers (LYVE-1, P < 0.001-0.008 and podoplanin, P = 0.002-0.011). Expression of CD31 was not different between the groups (P = 0.978). Conclusions: Adding VEGF-C lymphoproliferation to standard antimetabolite treatment improved rabbit GFS success and may suggest a future strategy to improve human GFSs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Numerous meta-analyses have explored the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and diverse health outcomes, yet the comprehensive assessment of the scope, validity, and quality of this evidence remains incomplete. Our aim was to systematically review and synthesise existing meta-analyses of TyG index and health outcomes and to assess the quality of the evidence. METHODS: A thorough search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases was conducted from their inception through to 8 April 2024. We assessed the quality of reviews using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) and the certainty of the evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD: 42024518587). RESULTS: Overall, a total of 95 associations from 29 meta-analyses were included, investigating associations between TyG index and 30 health outcomes. Of these, 83 (87.4%) associations were statistically significant (P < 0.05) according to the random effects model. Based on the AMSTAR tool, 16 (55.2%) meta-analyses were high quality and none was low quality. The certainty of the evidence, assessed by the GRADE framework, showed that 6 (6.3%) associations were supported by moderate-quality evidence. When compared with the lowest category of the TyG index, the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) [relative risk (RR) = 2.25, 95%CI 1.82, 2.77], the risk of stroke in patients with diabetes mellitus (RR = 1.26, 95%CI 1.18, 1.33) or with acute coronary syndrome disease (RR = 1.56, 95%CI 1.06, 2.28), the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD)-non-fatal MI (RR = 2.02, 95%CI 1.32, 3.10), and the severity of CAD including coronary artery stenosis (RR = 3.49, 95%CI 1.71, 7.12) and multi-vessel CAD (RR = 2.33, 95%CI 1.59, 3.42) increased with high TyG index. CONCLUSION: We found that the TyG index was positively associated with many diseases including the risk of CIN and stroke, the prognosis of CAD, and the severity of CAD which were supported by moderate-quality evidence. TyG index might be useful to identify people at high-risk for developing these diseases.

Background: Scrub typhus has become widespread across various regions in China in recent decades, causing a considerable burden on residents. While meteorological variables significantly impact the spread of scrub typhus, there is insufficient quantitative evidence illustrating this association in known high-endemic areas. Methods: A distributed lag non-linear model was applied to explore the relationship between meteorological parameters and scrub typhus incidence from 2010 to 2019 in Baoshan City, western Yunnan Province, China. Results: High monthly mean (20°C) and maximum (30°C) temperatures were associated with a peak risk of scrub typhus in the current month. Higher minimum temperatures and higher relative humidity were followed by increasing cumulative risks over the ensuing 3 months. Higher precipitation was followed by increasing cumulative risk over the ensuing 2-month period, peaking at around 30 cm. Conclusion: The non-linear lag associations between meteorological parameters and scrub typhus incidence suggest that higher monthly minimum temperature and relative humidity could be associated with an increased risk of scrub typhus in the subsequent several months, while warm temperature is more likely to impact the occurrence of scrub typhus in the current month.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although evidence on the association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and human health outcomes has grown exponentially, specific health outcomes and their potential associations with PFASs have not been conclusively evaluated. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search through the databases of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to February 29, 2024, to identify systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies examining the associations between the PFASs and multiple health outcomes. The quality of included studies was evaluated using the A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) tool, and credibility of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) criteria. The protocol of this umbrella review (UR) had been registered in PROSPERO (CRD 42023480817). RESULTS: The UR identified 157 meta-analyses from 29 articles. Using the AMSTAR measurement tool, all articles were categorized as of moderate-to-high quality. Based on the GRADE assessment, significant associations between specific types of PFASs and low birth weight, tetanus vaccine response, and triglyceride levels showed high certainty of evidence. Moreover, moderate certainty of evidence with statistical significance was observed between PFASs and health outcomes including lower BMI z-score in infancy, poor sperm progressive motility, and decreased risk of preterm birth as well as preeclampsia. Fifty-two (33%) associations (e.g., PFASs and gestational hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc) presented low certainty evidence. Additionally, eighty-five (55%) associations (e.g., PFASs with infertility, lipid metabolism, etc) presented very low certainty evidence. CONCLUSION: High certainty of evidence supported that certain PFASs were associated with the incidence of low birth weight, low efficiency of the tetanus vaccine, and low triglyceride levels.

ABSTRACT

Due to its widespread applications in various fields, antibiotics are continuously released into the environment and ultimately enter the human body through diverse routes. Meanwhile, the unreasonable use of antibiotics can also lead to a series of adverse outcomes. Pregnant women and developing fetuses are more susceptible to the influence of external chemicals than adults. The evaluation of antibiotic exposure levels through questionnaire surveys or prescriptions in medical records and biomonitoring-based data shows that antibiotics are frequently prescribed and used by pregnant women around the world. Antibiotics may be transmitted from mothers to their offspring through different pathways, which then adversely affect the health of offspring. However, there has been no comprehensive review on antibiotic exposure and mother-to-child transmission in pregnant women so far. Herein, we summarized the exposure levels of antibiotics in pregnant women and fetuses, the exposure routes of antibiotics to pregnant women, and related influencing factors. In addition, we scrutinized the potential mechanisms and factors influencing the transfer of antibiotics from mother to fetus through placental transmission, and explored the adverse effects of maternal antibiotic exposure on fetal growth and development, neonatal gut microbiota, and subsequent childhood health. Given the widespread use of antibiotics and the health threats posed by their exposure, it is necessary to comprehensively track antibiotics in pregnant women and fetuses in the future, and more in-depth biological studies are needed to reveal and verify the mechanisms of mother-to-child transmission, which is crucial for accurately quantifying and evaluating fetal health status.

Sediment re-suspension plays a crucial role in releasing endogenous nitrogen and greenhouse gases in shallow urban waters. However, the impacts of repeated re-suspension and photo-induced processes on migration and transformation from endogenous nitrogen, as well as the emission of greenhouse gases, remain unclear. This study simulated three conditions: re-suspension (Rs), re-suspension combined with ultravioletirradiation (Rs + UV), and ultraviolet irradiation (UV). The findings revealed that both repeated sediment re-suspension and exposure to UV light altered the characteristics of surface sediments. Decrease of convertible nitrogen in sediments, leading to the release of ion-exchangeable nitrogen (IEF-N) into NH4+-N and NO3--N, influenced greenhouse gas production differently under various conditions. The study observed the highest concentration of dissolved N2O in under UV irradiation, positively correlated with NO2--N and NO3--N. Re-suspension increased the turbidity of the overlying water and accelerated nitrification, resulting in the highest NO3--N concentration and the lowest dissolved N2O concentration. Additionally, in the Rs + UV dissolved N2O maintained the higher concentrations than in Rs, with greatest amount of N conversion in surface sediments, and a 59.45% reduction in IEF-N. The production of N2O during re-suspension was mainly positively correlated with NH4+-N in the overlying water. Therefore, this study suggest that repeated re-suspension and light exposure significantly influence nitrogen migration and transformation processes in sediment, providing a theoretical explanation for the eutrophication of water and greenhouse gas emissions.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Viral encephalitis is an infectious disease severely affecting human health. It is caused by a wide variety of viral pathogens, including herpes viruses, flaviviruses, enteroviruses, and other viruses. The laboratory diagnosis of viral encephalitis is a worldwide challenge. Recently, high-throughput sequencing technology has provided new tools for diagnosing central nervous system infections. Thus, In this study, we established a multipathogen detection platform for viral encephalitis based on amplicon sequencing. Methods: We designed nine pairs of specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers for the 12 viruses by reviewing the relevant literature. The detection ability of the primers was verified by software simulation and the detection of known positive samples. Amplicon sequencing was used to validate the samples, and consistency was compared with Sanger sequencing. Results: The results showed that the target sequences of various pathogens were obtained at a coverage depth level greater than 20×, and the sequence lengths were consistent with the sizes of the predicted amplicons. The sequences were verified using the National Center for Biotechnology Information BLAST, and all results were consistent with the results of Sanger sequencing. Conclusion: Amplicon-based high-throughput sequencing technology is feasible as a supplementary method for the pathogenic detection of viral encephalitis. It is also a useful tool for the high-volume screening of clinical samples.

ABSTRACT

A magnon is a collective excitation of the spin structure in a magnetic insulator and can transmit spin angular momentum with negligible dissipation. This quantum of a spin wave has always been manipulated through magnetic dipoles (that is, by breaking time-reversal symmetry). Here we report the experimental observation of chiral spin transport in multiferroic BiFeO3 and its control by reversing the ferroelectric polarization (that is, by breaking spatial inversion symmetry). The ferroelectrically controlled magnons show up to 18% modulation at room temperature. The spin torque that the magnons in BiFeO3 carry can be used to efficiently switch the magnetization of adjacent magnets, with a spin-torque efficiency comparable to the spin Hall effect in heavy metals. Utilizing such controllable magnon generation and transmission in BiFeO3, an all-oxide, energy-scalable logic is demonstrated composed of spin-orbit injection, detection and magnetoelectric control. Our observations open a new chapter of multiferroic magnons and pave another path towards low-dissipation nanoelectronics.

ABSTRACT

Kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) have attracted enormous interest due to the coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) order, unconventional superconductivity (SC) and anomalous Hall effect (AHE). In this paper, we reported an intensive investigation on Cs(V1-xTax)3Sb5 single crystals with systematic Ta doping. Ta was confirmed to be doped into V-site in the Kagome layer from both single crystal X-ray diffraction structural refinement and scanning transmission electron microscopy observation. The highest Ta doping level was found to be about 16%, which is more than twice as much as 7% in Nb-doped CsV3Sb5. With the increase of Ta doping, CDW order was gradually suppressed and finally vanished when the doping level reached to more than 8%. Meanwhile, superconductivity was enhanced with a maximum critical temperature (Tc) of 5.3 K, which is the highest Tc in the bulk crystal of this Kagome system at ambient pressure so far. The µ0Hc2(T) behavior demonstrates that the system is still a two-band superconductor after Ta doping. Based on the electrical transport measurement, a phase diagram was set up to exhibit the evolution of CDW and SC in the Cs(V1-xTax)3Sb5 system. These findings pave a new way to search for new superconductors with higher Tc in the AV3Sb5 family and establish a new platform for tuning and controlling the multiple orders and superconducting states.

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of topical and subconjunctival bevacizumab in suppressing vascularization in graft and host bed after high-risk corneal transplantation. Design: Secondary analysis of prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentric clinical trial. Participants: The study includes patients aged > 18 years who underwent high-risk penetrating keratoplasty, which was defined as corneal vascularization in ≥ 1 quadrants of the corneal graft and host bed, excluding the limbus. Methods: Patients were randomized to treatment and control groups. The patients in the treatment group received subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab (2.5 mg/0.1 ml) on the day of the procedure, followed by topical bevacizumab (10 mg/ml) 4 times per day for 4 weeks. The patients in control group received injection of vehicle (0.9% sodium chloride) on the day of procedure, followed by topical vehicle (carboxymethylcellulose sodium 1%) 4 times a day for 4 weeks. Main Outcome Measures: Vessel and invasion area of vessels in the corneal graft and host beds. Results: This study included 56 eyes of 56 patients who underwent high-risk corneal transplantation, with equal numbers in the bevacizumab and vehicle (control) treatment groups. The mean age of patients who received bevacizumab was 61.2 ± 15.9 years, and the mean age of those treated with vehicle was 60.0 ± 16.1 years. The vessel area at baseline was comparable in the bevacizumab (16.72% ± 3.19%) and control groups (15.48% ± 3.12%; P = 0.72). Similarly, the invasion areas were also similar in the treatment (35.60% ± 2.47%) and control (34.23% ± 2.64%; P = 0.9) groups at baseline. The reduction in vessel area was significantly higher in the bevacizumab-treated group (83.7%) over a period of 52 weeks compared with the control group (61.5%; P < 0.0001). In the bevacizumab-treated group, invasion area was reduced by 75.8% as compared with 46.5% in the control group. The vessel area was similar at 52 weeks postprocedure in cases of first (3.54% ± 1.21%) and repeat (3.80% ± 0.40%) corneal transplantation in patients who received bevacizumab treatment. In the vehicle-treated patients, the vessel area was significantly higher in repeat (9.76% ± 0.32%) compared with first (8.06% ± 1.02%; P < 0.0001) penetrating keratoplasty. In the bevacizumab treatment group, invasion areas at week 52 were comparable in first (11.70% ± 3.38%) and repeat (11.64% ± 1.74%) procedures, whereas invasion area was significantly higher in repeat (27.87% ± 2.57%) as compared with first (24.11% ± 2.17%) penetrating keratoplasty in vehicle-treated patients. Conclusions: In patients undergoing vascularized high-risk corneal transplantation, bevacizumab is efficacious in reducing vascularization of corneal graft and host bed, thereby reducing the risk of corneal graft rejection in vascularized host beds. ABSTRACT

The search for alternative chemical systems other than polymers with chain topologies for soft structural materials raises general interests in fundamental materials and chemical sciences. It is also appealing from an engineering perspective for the urgent need to resolve the typical trade-offs of polymer systems. Herein, a subnanometer molecular cluster, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, is assembled into molecular nanoparticles (MNPs) with star topology. Broadly tunable viscoelasticity can be realized by fine-tuning the MNPs' deformability. Being analogous to polymeric systems, the hierarchical structural relaxation dynamics can be observed, and their relaxation time and temperature dependence are dominated by the linker flexibilities. This not only provides microscopic understanding on MNP's unique viscoelasticity but also offers enormous opportunities for modulating their mechanical properties via linker engineering. Our work proves the possibility of applying structural units with particle topologies for the design of soft structural materials.

ABSTRACT

Topology1-3 and interactions are foundational concepts in the modern understanding of quantum matter. Their nexus yields three important research directions: (1) the competition between distinct interactions, as in several intertwined phases, (2) the interplay between interactions and topology that drives the phenomena in twisted layered materials and topological magnets, and (3) the coalescence of several topological orders to generate distinct novel phases. The first two examples have grown into major areas of research, although the last example remains mostly unexplored, mainly because of the lack of a material platform for experimental studies. Here, using tunnelling microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy and a theoretical analysis, we unveil a 'hybrid' topological phase of matter in the simple elemental-solid arsenic. Through a unique bulk-surface-edge correspondence, we uncover that arsenic features a conjoined strong and higher-order topology that stabilizes a hybrid topological phase. Although momentum-space spectroscopy measurements show signs of topological surface states, real-space microscopy measurements unravel a unique geometry of topologically induced step-edge conduction channels revealed on various natural nanostructures on the surface. Using theoretical models, we show that the existence of gapless step-edge states in arsenic relies on the simultaneous presence of both a non-trivial strong Z2 invariant and a non-trivial higher-order topological invariant, which provide experimental evidence for hybrid topology. Our study highlights pathways for exploring the interplay of different band topologies and harnessing the associated topological conduction channels in engineered quantum or nano-devices.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To review the published literature on the safety and outcomes of keratolimbal allograft (KLAL) transplantation and living-related conjunctival limbal allograft (lr-CLAL) transplantation for bilateral severe/total limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). METHODS: Literature searches were last conducted in the PubMed database in February 2023 and were limited to the English language. They yielded 523 citations; 76 were reviewed in full text, and 21 met the inclusion criteria. Two studies were rated level II, and the remaining 19 studies were rated level III. There were no level I studies. RESULTS: After KLAL surgery, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved in 42% to 92% of eyes at final follow-up (range, 12-95 months). The BCVA was unchanged in 17% to 39% of eyes and decreased in 8% to 29% of eyes. Two of 14 studies that evaluated the results of KLAL reported a notable decline in visual acuity over time postoperatively. Survival of KLAL was variable, ranging from 21% to 90% at last follow-up (range, 12-95 months) and decreased over time. For patients undergoing lr-CLAL surgery, BCVA improved in 31% to 100% of eyes at final follow-up (range, 16-49 months). Of the 9 studies evaluating lr-CLAL, 4 reported BCVA unchanged in 30% to 39% of patients, and 3 reported a decline in BCVA in 8% to 10% of patients. The survival rate of lr-CLAL ranged from 50% to 100% at final follow-up (range, 16-49 months). The most common complications were postoperative elevation of intraocular pressure, persistent epithelial defects, and acute allograft immune rejections. CONCLUSIONS: Given limited options for patients with bilateral LSCD, both KLAL and lr-CLAL are viable choices that may provide improvement of vision and ocular surface findings. The studies trend toward a lower rejection rate and graft failure with lr-CLAL. However, the level and duration of immunosuppression vary widely between the studies and may impact allograft rejections and long-term graft survival. Complications related to immunosuppression are minimal. Repeat surgery may be needed to maintain a viable ocular surface. Reasonable long-term success can be achieved with both KLAL and lr-CLAL with appropriate systemic immunosuppression. ABSTRACT

We report the case of an 80-year-old man with restrictive strabismus in lateral gaze following multiple oculoplastic procedures for idiopathic epiphora. Despite excellent initial response to nasal conjunctival recession with lysis of adhesions and a miminal recession of the medial rectus muscle, the patient suffered recurrence of diplopia associated with limitation of abduction due to aggressive, deep, subconjunctival scarring. Given the history of oral lichen planus (LP), the patient was diagnosed with ocular involvement of LP. He underwent a second conjunctival recession, this time accompanied by an intensive LP treatment regimen. Nine months after surgery, he remained diplopia free and orthophoric in primary gaze. Surgeons treating restrictive strabismus in patients with LP should consider implementing systemic and topical immunosuppressive treatment simultaneously with surgical management.

ABSTRACT

Sfela is a white brined Greek cheese of protected designation of origin (PDO) produced in the Peloponnese region from ovine, caprine milk, or a mixture of the two. Despite the PDO status of Sfela, very few studies have addressed its properties, including its microbiology. For this reason, we decided to investigate the microbiome of two PDO industrial Sfela cheese samples along with two non-PDO variants, namely Sfela touloumotiri and Xerosfeli. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics analysis were used to identify the microbiome of these traditional cheeses. Cultured-based analysis showed that the most frequent species that could be isolated from Sfela cheese were Enterococcus faecium, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Levilactobacillus brevis, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Streptococcus thermophilus. Shotgun analysis suggested that in industrial Sfela 1, Str. thermophilus dominated, while industrial Sfela 2 contained high levels of Lactococcus lactis. The two artisanal samples, Sfela touloumotiri and Xerosfeli, were dominated by Tetragenococcus halophilus and Str. thermophilus, respectively. Debaryomyces hansenii was the only yeast species with abundance > 1% present exclusively in the Sfela touloumotiri sample. Identifying additional yeast species in the shotgun data was challenging, possibly due to their low abundance. Sfela cheese appears to contain a rather complex microbial ecosystem and thus needs to be further studied and understood. This might be crucial for improving and standardizing both its production and safety measures.

ABSTRACT

Recent studies show that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from urban landscape water are significant and cannot be overlooked, underscoring the need to develop effective strategies for mitigating GHG production from global freshwater systems. Calcium peroxide (CaO2) is commonly used as an eco-friendly reagent for controlling eutrophication in water bodies, but whether CaO2 can reduce GHG emissions remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of CaO2 dosage on the production of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in urban landscape water under anoxic conditions during summer. The findings reveal that CaO2 addition not only improved the physicochemical and organoleptic properties of simulated urban landscape water but also reduced N2O production by inhibiting the activity of denitrifying bacteria across various dosages. Moreover, CaO2 exhibited selective effects on methanogens. Specifically, the abundance of acetoclastic methanogen Methanosaeta and methylotrophic methanogen Candidatus_Methanofastidiosum increased whereas the abundance of the hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanoregula decreased at low, medium, and high dosages, leading to higher CH4 production at increased CaO2 dosage. A comprehensive multi-objective evaluation indicated that an optimal dosage of 60 g CaO2/m2 achieved 41.21 % and 84.40 % reductions in CH4 and N2O production, respectively, over a 50-day period compared to the control. This paper not only introduces a novel approach for controlling the production of GHGs, such as CH4 and N2O, from urban landscape water but also suggests a methodology for optimizing CaO2 dosage, providing valuable insights for its practical application.
