ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease of unknown etiology. LCH involving the thymus is mainly seen in pediatric patients and is extremely rare in adults. In this report, we describe a rare case of LCH originating from the thymus in an adult. CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old man was admitted in April 2022 with complaints of intermittent dizziness since 2020, which had worsened in the previous 10 d. The physical chest examination was negative, and there was a history of hypertension for > 2 years. Chest computed tomography showed a nodular soft tissue density shadow in the anterior mediastinum measuring approximately 13 mm × 9 mm × 8 mm. Postoperative pathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of LCH. CONCLUSION: It is challenging to differentiate LCH involving the thymus from thymoma in imaging features. Pathological biopsy remains the gold standard when an anterior mediastinal occupying lesion is found.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and pathological indicators in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant clinical trials. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) showed the effect magnitude of the expression of EGFR, age, gender, tumor size, lymph node metastasis (LNM), extrathyroid extension(ETE), and TNM(Tumor, Lymph node, Metastasis) stage. Stata 12.0 was used for statistical analysis of data. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: A total of 845 cases of PTC were included through the retrieval of 8 studies performed abroad. EGFR significantly correlated with extrathyroid extension (OR = 3.25; 95% CI: 1.25-8.43; Z = 2.42; P = 0.015), LNM (OR = 8.40; 95% CI: 5.44-12.97; Z = 9.61; P = 0.000), and TNM stage (OR = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.51-3.51; Z = 3.87; P= 0.000). EGFR had no correlation with age (OR =1.13; 95% CI: 0.83-1.53; Z = 0.77; P = 0.44], gender (OR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.66-1.33; Z = 0.38; P = 0.70), and tumor size (OR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.06-2.68; Z = 2.19; P = 0.03). Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the studies by Cui Tang and Alfred King Yin Lam in LNM impacted the pooled OR. After removing these two studies, relatively stable results between the expression of EGFR and LNM were obtained. CONCLUSIONS: The results in the expression of EGFR is frequent and cancer-specific event in PTC. Besides, the expression of EGFR was involved in the progression and metastasis of PTC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analysis the nutrient and effective ingredients of in Cordyceps militaris and make the best use of its medical value. METHOD: Adenosine, cordycepin, polysaccharides, cordyceps acid, protein and fat in different parts of C. militaris were extracted, they are quantified by HPLC and other colorimetric analysis. RESULT: The contents of polysaccharide was found to be 86.49 mg x g(-1) in C. militaris, 6.82 mg x g(-1) of adenosine in stroma, 13.28 mg x g(-1) of cordycepin and 44.07 mg x g(-1) of cordyceps acid in sclerolium. CONCLUSION: In different parts of C. militaris, the biosynthesis of effective ingredients is different. The total amount of effective ingredients is highest in C. militaris, the production of cordycepin and cordyceps acid is highest in sclerotium in comparison with other parts. Growth of C. militaris largely relies on its capability to utilize fat and protein from silkworm.

ABSTRACT

The petroleum ether, chloroform, and methyl alcohol extracts of wild and cultivated Rhodiola saccharinensis A. Bor and Rhodila angusta Nakai taken from Changbai Mountains, and obtained by the same isolation procedure, were for the first time studied with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry(FTIR), and the spectra obtained were compared with those of a sort of goods named Rhodiola Cake (Hong Jing Tian Kuai). It was shown that the infrared spectra of the wild and cultivated Rhodiola saccharinensis A. Bor and Rhodila angusta Nakai are different, which can be used to determine and evaluate their respective species.
