ABSTRACT

Objective: Despite the fact that China amounts to one-fifth of the world's population, has a higher proportion of the elderly, and has a higher prevalence of osteoporosis and fracture, limited studies have investigated the association between dietary patterns and bone mineral density (BMD) as well as fracture risk among the elderly Chinese population. We aimed to investigate the association between different dietary patterns and BMD as well as the risk of fractures, and this association may vary between elderly women and men. Methods: Building upon the China Osteoporosis Prevalence Study, we included 17,489 subjects aged ≥40 years old randomly sampled across 44 counties/districts of 11 provinces or municipalities in China who completed a food frequency questionnaire. BMD was measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry. Vertebral fracture was defined based on lateral spine radiographs using the semi-quantitative technique of Genant. Results: A diet rich in "carnivorous", "vegetarian", "dairy, fruit, and egg" was significantly associated with higher BMD at total hip (TH), femoral neck (FN), and lumbar spine 1-4 (L1-4). Yet, a diet rich in "beverage and fried food" was associated with a lower BMD at the FN and L1-4. High quartiles of the carnivorous diet were associated with 34%-39% reduced risk of clinical fracture in the past 5 years and vertebral fracture. Stronger associations were observed among women. Sensitivity analysis among postmenopausal women presented even stronger positive associations between carnivorous and vegetarian diets and high BMD, as well as between carnivorous diet and reduced risk of fractures. Conclusions: Our study suggested that a diet rich in meat, vegetables, and dairy, fruit, and eggs might be associated with greater BMD and a lower fracture risk, while beverage and fried foods may be associated with a lower BMD at L1-4, especially among elderly women. These findings are relevant to provide recommendations on dietary nutrition regarding the elderly population at high risk of osteoporosis and fractures, especially postmenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

Low-light conditions pose significant challenges to vision tasks, such as salient object detection (SOD), due to insufficient photons. Light-insensitive RGB-T SOD models mitigate the above problems to some extent, but they are limited in performance as they only focus on spatial feature fusion while ignoring the frequency discrepancy. To this end, we propose an RGB-T SOD model by mining spatial-frequency cues, called SFMNet, for low-light scenes. Our SFMNet consists of spatial-frequency feature exploration (SFFE) modules and spatial-frequency feature interaction (SFFI) modules. To be specific, the SFFE module aims to separate spatial-frequency features and adaptively extract high and low-frequency features. Moreover, the SFFI module integrates cross-modality and cross-domain information to capture effective feature representations. By deploying both modules in a top-down pathway, our method generates high-quality saliency predictions. Furthermore, we construct the first low-light RGB-T SOD dataset as a benchmark for evaluating performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our SFMNet can achieve higher accuracy than the existing models for low-light scenes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo biloba L. preparations (GBLPs) are a class of Chinese herbal medicine used in the adjuvant treatment of ischemic stroke (IS). Recently, several systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) of GBLPs for IS have been published. OBJECTIVE: This overview aims to assess the quality of related SRs and MAs. SEARCH STRATEGY: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Biological Medicine, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and Chinese Science and Technology Journals databases were searched from their inception to December 31, 2022. INCLUSION CRITERIA: SRs and MAs of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that explored the efficacy of GBLPs for patients with IS were included. DATA EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS: Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the methodological quality, risk of bias (ROB), reporting quality, and credibility of evidence of the included SRs and MAs using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2), Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews (ROBIS), the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA), and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE), respectively. Additionally, descriptive analysis and data synthesis were conducted. RESULTS: Twenty-nine SRs/MAs involving 119 outcomes were included in this review. The overall methodological quality of all SRs/MAs was critically low based on AMSTAR 2, and 28 had a high ROB based on the ROBIS. According to the PRISMA statement, the reporting items of the included SRs/MAs are relatively complete. The results based on GRADE showed that of the 119 outcomes, 8 were rated as moderate quality, 24 as low quality, and 87 as very low quality. Based on the data synthesis, GBLPs used in conjunction with conventional treatment were superior to conventional treatment alone for decreasing neurological function scores. CONCLUSION: GBLPs can be considered a beneficial supplemental therapy for IS. However, because of the low quality of the existing evidence, high-quality RCTs and SRs/MAs are warranted to further evaluate the benefits of GBLPs for treating IS. ABSTRACT

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging can visualize a remote object out of the direct line of sight and can potentially be used in endoscopy, unmanned vehicles, and robotic vision. In an NLOS imaging system, multiple diffusive reflections of light usually induce large optical attenuation, and therefore, a sensitive and efficient photodetector, or, their array, is required. Limited by the spectral sensitivity of the light sensors, up to now, most of the NLOS imaging experiments are performed in the visible bands, and a few at the near-infrared, 1550 nm. Here, to break this spectral limitation, we demonstrate a proof-of-principle NLOS imaging system using a fractal superconducting nanowire single-photon detector, which exhibits intrinsic single-photon sensitivity over an ultra-broad spectral range. We showcase NLOS imaging at 1560- and 1997-nm two wavelengths, both technologically important for specific applications. We develop a de-noising algorithm and combine it with the light-cone-transform algorithm to reconstruct the shape of the hidden objects with significantly enhanced signal-to-noise ratios. We believe that the joint advancement of the hardware and the algorithm presented in this paper could further expand the application spaces of the NLOS imaging systems.

BACKGROUND: Huazhuo Tiaozhi granule (HTG) is a herbal medicine formula widely used in clinical practice for hypolipidaemic effects. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying dyslipidaemia treatment have not been well elucidated. RESULTS: A significant reduction in the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was observed in the serum of patients with dyslipidaemia after HTG treatment, without disruption in the levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine (Cr). The dyslipidaemia rat model was induced by a high-fat diet and treated with Xuezhikang (0.14 g/kg/d) or HTG (9.33 g crude herb/kg/day) by gavage for 8 weeks. Body weight and liver index were markedly decreased in dyslipidaemic rats after treatment with Xuezhikang or HTG. HTG administration markedly ameliorated hyperlipidaemia by decreasing the levels of TC and LDL-C in serum and hepatic lipid accumulation. In vitro, lipid accumulation in LO2 and HepG2 cells was alleviated by serum treatment with HTG. High lactylation was observed in 198 proteins, including lactylation of histone H2B (K6), H4 (K80). Deep sequencing of microRNAs showed that miR-155-5p was significantly downregulated. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that HTG is an effective and safe formula for treating dyslipidaemia, which promotes lactylation in hepatocytes, and the retardation of miR-155-5p biogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Accumulated clinical and biomedical evidence suggests that abnormalities in systemic metabolic processes such as fatty acid and amino acid metabolism can affect the brain function and behavior of various central nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, metabolic profiling was used to investigate changes in plasma and urine metabolites following stereotactic injection of amyloid ß (Aß) and treatment with donepezil in rats. Aß causes cognitive impairment, while donepezil treatment successfully improves memory impairment. Donepezil improves Aß-induced plasma fatty acid and bile acid metabolism disorders, as well as Aß-induced urine phenylalanine and tryptophan metabolism disorders in rats. More specifically, the plasma fatty acids improved by donepezil include alpha-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid, among others. Additionally, donepezil significantly restored the downregulation of bile acids such as ursodeoxycholic acid, cholic acid, and glycocholic acid caused by Aß. As for urine metabolites, phenylacetylglycine, epinephrine, and other phenylalanine metabolites, as well as kynurenic acid, xanthurenic acid, and other tryptophan metabolites, were worsened by Aß and improved by donepezil. These findings suggest that the cognitive impairment induced by Aß and the improvement by donepezil are associated with changes in metabolic disorders in rats. This study provides basic data for the effects of Aß and donepezil on plasma and urine metabolites in Aß-induced AD rat models.

Famine exposure in early life has been found to have a long-term effect on metabolic diseases, but its effect on bone health was not clear. In this study, we found women, who suffered from famine exposure during their childhood or adolescence period, had significantly decreased BMD at several skeletal sites compared to the age-matched non-exposed groups. The risk of clinical fracture was also elevated in adolescence-exposed women. PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between famine exposure at certain stages and bone mass in adulthood. METHODS: We enrolled participants born in 1943-1962 from the China Osteoporosis Prevalence Study (COPS), which were classified into three famine exposure groups according to their birth year: fetal-famine exposure (1959-1962, n = 1693), childhood-famine exposure (1949-1958, n = 5557), and adolescence-famine exposure (1943-1948, n = 1530). We also selected age-balanced non-exposed participants as the control groups for men and women separately. Bone mineral density (BMD) and vertebral fractures (VFs) were measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and X-ray, respectively. The associations of famine exposure in early life with BMD were assessed via multiple linear regression. Logistic regression was performed to examine the association of famine exposure in early life with fracture risk with adjustments for covariates. RESULTS: In women, the childhood-exposed and adolescence-exposed groups had significantly decreased BMD at several skeletal sites compared to the age-matched non-exposed groups. No significant decreased BMD was found in the fetal-exposed groups compared to the non-exposed groups in both sexes. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that famine exposure during childhood and adolescence was negatively associated with BMD at the femoral neck after adjusting for covariates in women. The risk of clinical fracture was also elevated in adolescence-exposed women. CONCLUSION: Famine exposure during early life especially childhood and adolescence is associated with decreased bone mass in adulthood in women but did not affect bone mass in men.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a valuable resource of active natural products and plays an important role in cancer treatment with the advantages of high efficiency and safety. Wenxia Changfu formula (WCF) is modified from Dahuang Fuzi decoction from Han Dynasty and has been used for treating lung cancer in China. Our previous research showed that WCF had an antitumor effect in vivo and in vitro, while the mechanism has not been well illustrated. In this study, the effect of WCF on the proliferative ability in three lung cancer cells and one noncancerous human cell line was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. WCF suppressed A549, H460, and PC-9 cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, with no inhibition of noncancerous MRC-5 cells after 48 h treatment with WCF (0-50 mg/mL). Furthermore, we screened for genes in A549 cells using four WCF-treated samples and four control samples on a gene expression profile microarray. 21 genes were significantly downregulated by WCF, which may potentially play an important role in the proliferation of A549 cells. High-content screening evaluated whether silencing the 21 genes affected A549 cell growth. The results showed that PIF1 knockdown exhibited the most potent inhibition of cell proliferation compared with the other genes. Downregulation of PIF1 increased A549 cell apoptosis and the activity of caspase 3/7. Besides, RT-PCR showed that the expression levels of PIF1 mRNA decreased significantly in A549, H460, and PC-9 cells after WCF treatment. In conclusion, the present observations indicate that WCF may inhibit lung cancer cell proliferation by promoting apoptosis via regulating the expression of PIF1.

ABSTRACT

Importance: The aging of the population is associated with an increasing burden of fractures worldwide. However, the epidemiological features of fractures in mainland China are not well known. Objective: To assess the prevalence of and factors associated with osteoporosis, clinical fractures, and vertebral fractures in an adult population 40 years or older in mainland China. Design, Setting. and Participants: This cross-sectional study, the China Osteoporosis Prevalence Study, was conducted from December 2017 to August 2018. A random sample of individuals aged 20 years or older who represented urban and rural areas of China were enrolled, with a 99% participation rate. Main Outcomes and Measures: Weighted prevalence of osteoporosis, clinical fracture, and vertebral fracture by age, sex, and urban vs rural residence as determined by x-ray absorptiometry, questionnaire, and radiography. Results: A total of 20 416 participants were included in this study; 20 164 (98.8%; 11 443 women [56.7%]; mean [SD] age, 53 [13] years) had a qualified x-ray absorptiometry image and completed the questionnaire, and 8423 of 8800 (95.7%) had a qualified spine radiograph. The prevalence of osteoporosis among those aged 40 years or older was 5.0% (95% CI, 4.2%-5.8%) among men and 20.6% (95% CI, 19.3%-22.0%) among women. The prevalence of vertebral fracture was 10.5% (95% CI, 9.0%-12.0%) among men and 9.7% (95% CI, 8.2%-11.1%) among women. The prevalence of clinical fracture in the past 5 years was 4.1% (95% CI, 3.3%-4.9%) among men and 4.2% (95% CI, 3.6%-4.7%) among women. Among men and women, 0.3% (95% CI, 0.0%-0.7%) and 1.4% (95% CI, 0.8%-2.0%), respectively, with osteoporosis diagnosed on the basis of bone mineral density or with fracture were receiving antiosteoporosis treatment to prevent fracture. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cross-sectional study of an adult population in mainland China, the prevalence of osteoporosis and vertebral fracture were high and the prevalence of vertebral fracture and clinical fracture was similarly high in men and women. These findings suggest that current guidelines for screening and treatment of fractures among patients in China should focus equally on men and women and should emphasize the prevention of vertebral fractures.

ABSTRACT

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a major subtype of lung cancer, the prognosis of patients with which is associated with both lncRNAs and cancer immunity. In this study, we collected gene expression data of 585 LUAD patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and 605 subjects from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. LUAD patients were divided into high and low immune-cell-infiltrated groups according to the single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) algorithm to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Based on the 49 immune-related DE lncRNAs, a four-lncRNA prognostic signature was constructed by applying least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, univariate Cox regression, and stepwise multivariate Cox regression in sequence. Kaplan-Meier curve, ROC analysis, and the testing GEO datasets verified the effectiveness of the signature in predicting overall survival (OS). Univariate Cox regression and multivariate Cox regression suggested that the signature was an independent prognostic factor. The correlation analysis revealed that the infiltration immune cell subtypes were related to these lncRNAs.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death. It is necessary to develop effective anti-lung cancer therapeutics. Wenxia Formula (WXF), an empirical traditional Chinese herbal formula, has been reported to have significant antitumor activity. In this study, to further clarify the material basis of the anti-tumor effect of WXF, we investigated the cytotoxic effect of the N-butanol fraction of Wenxia Formula extract (NWXF) against two lung cancer and one normal human cell lines. The chemical profile of NWXF was characterized by UPLC/Q-TOF-MS analysis and a total of 201 compounds with mzCloud Best Match of greater than 70 were identified by using the online database mzCloud. To address the functional role of NWXF, we assessed cell proliferation, migration and invasion capabilities. Subcutaneous xenografts were constructed to determine the effect of NWXF in vivo. The results showed that NWXF effectively inhibited the proliferation and migration of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells with little toxic effects on human bronchial epithelial cells. Meanwhile, orally administered NWXF exhibited prominent dose-dependent anti-tumor efficacy in vivo. Mechanistically, NWXF significantly downregulated MMP9 and Sp1-mediated MMP2 expression. In conclusion, NWXF might be a promising candidate for treatment of human lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by continuous body wasting and loss of skeletal muscle. Impaired mitochondria function is closely associated with muscle atrophy in cancer cachexia. Our previous study confirmed the effectiveness of Baoyuan Jiedu decoction (BJD) in inhibiting cancer-induced muscle atrophy in an in vivo model. However, little is known about its mechanisms in regulating mitochondria dysfunction. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effect and action mechanisms of BJD against atrophy both in the Lewis-conditioned medium induced C2C12 myotube atrophy model and in a BALB/c mice xenograft model using mouse colon cancer C26 cells. The mitochondrial content was tested by 10-Non-ylacridine orange staining. Expressions of related proteins and mRNAs were detected by western blotting (WB) and qPCR, respectively. As a result, 18 major components were identified in BJD by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole (UHPLC-Q) Exactive analysis. As shown in the in vitro results, BJD treatment prevented prominent myotube atrophy and increased the myotube diameter of C2C12 cells. Besides, BJD treatment increased mitochondrial content and ATPase activity. Furthermore, the protein and mRNA expressions that were related to mitochondrial functions and generation such as cytochrome-c oxidase IV, Cytochrome C, nuclear respiratory factor 1, and mitochondrial transcription factor A were significantly increased in BJD treatment compared to the control group. The in vivo results showed that BJD treatment prevented body weight loss and improved the gastrocnemius index in cachexia mice. Moreover, the expressions of Atrogin-1 and muscle RING-finger protein-1 were decreased by BJD treatment. Mechanically, BJD increased the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1, and consistently, inhibited the expression of p38 MAPK and its phosphorylation both in vivo and in vitro. Taken together, this study identified that BJD effectively relieved cancer-induced myotube atrophy and provided a potential mechanism for BJD in regulating mitochondrial dynamics through p38 MAPK/PGC-1α signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Sini powder for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in rats and the molecular mechanisms involved. METHODS: A rat model of stress-induced NAFLD was established by a combination of long-term tethering and feeding of a high-fat, high-calorie diet. These rats were then intragastrically administered with either simvastatin, Sini powder, or vehicle for 1 week. The body mass and field test scores for each group were recorded weekly. Serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities, and triglyceride, total cholesterol, and free fatty acid concentrations were measured. Liver tissue histopathology was examined on hematoxylin and eosin-stained paraffin sections and oil red O-stained frozen sections. The hepatic mRNA expression of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing CARD (ASC), and caspase-1 were measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The hepatic protein concentrations of NF-κB and NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and the serum concentrations of IL-1ß and IL-6 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Compared with the Blank group, rats in the Compound model group showed significant pathologic manifestations of NAFLD, and the expression of NF-κB, NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, IL-1ß and IL-6 were significantly higher (all P < 0.01). Both simvastatin and Sini powder significantly ameliorated the NAFLD pathology and the abnormal expression of NF-κB, NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, IL-1ß, and IL-6 (all P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Sini powder inhibits the inflammatory response in rats with NAFLD, which is mediated by NF-κB/NLRP3, IL-1ß, and IL-6, reduces the effects of psychological stress, and improves lipid metabolism. Therefore, Sini powder may be effective for the treatment of stress-related NAFLD through multiple mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a worldwide health issue; although the prospects for most patients are favorable, many still do not respond to the current therapies. Numerous articles related to RA have been published in the past 3 decades; an analysis of the most cited articles in this field was undertaken to identify important articles regarding RA related to pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. METHODS: We searched the Web of Science and collected the general information of the top 100 cited articles. The citation number, publication year, authorship, impact factor (IF) of the journal in the publication year, country origins, article types, and funding source were evaluated. RESULTS: The total citations of the top 100 articles varied from 11,922 to 556 and were published between 1985 and 2014. These articles were published in 24 journals, led by Arthritis and Rheumatism (n = 33), followed by the New England Journal of Medicine (n = 15). Most of the articles (n = 80) were produced by ≥5 authors. They were from 34 countries, and the United Stated contributed to most of the articles (n = 58), followed by the United Kingdom (n = 42). The article types were divided into clinical study (n = 55), review (n = 17), meta-analysis (n = 4), clinical guideline (n = 10), and basic science (n = 14). Eighty-seven percent of the articles were supported either by public organizations or medical companies. CONCLUSION: This study provided insights into the development of publications and their citations of RA in the past 3 decades. Clinical studies or clinical guidelines published in high-impact journals were more likely to be cited in the field of RA. The latest publications may not be included in the top 100 cited articles, as the more recent studies have not had sufficient time to accumulate the number of citations.

ABSTRACT

Indoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is important since people spend most of their time indoors. However, knowledge of the spatiotemporal variations of indoor PM2.5 concentrations within a city is limited. In this study, the spatiotemporal distributions of indoor PM2.5 levels in Nanjing, China were modeled by the multizone airflow and contaminant transport program (CONTAM), based on the geographically distributed residences, human activities, and outdoor PM2.5 concentrations. The accuracy of the CONTAM model was verified, with a good agreement between the model simulations and measurements (r = 0.940, N = 110). Two different scenarios were considered to examine the building performance and influence of occupant behaviors. Higher PM2.5 concentrations were observed under the scenario when indoor activities were considered. Seasonal variability was observed in indoor PM2.5 levels, with the highest concentrations occurring in the winter and the lowest occurring in the summer. Building characteristics have a significant effect on the spatial distribution of indoor PM2.5 concentrations, with multistory residences being more vulnerable to outdoor PM2.5 infiltration than high-rise residences. The overall population exposure to PM2.5 in Nanjing was estimated. It would be overestimated by 16.67% if indoor exposure was not taken into account, which would lead to a bias in the health impacts assessment.

ABSTRACT

Compressed sensing (CS) theory has attracted widespread attention in recent years and has been widely used in signal and image processing, such as underdetermined blind source separation (UBSS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), etc. As the main link of CS, the goal of sparse signal reconstruction is how to recover accurately and effectively the original signal from an underdetermined linear system of equations (ULSE). For this problem, we propose a new algorithm called the weighted regularized smoothed L 0 -norm minimization algorithm (WReSL0). Under the framework of this algorithm, we have done three things: (1) proposed a new smoothed function called the compound inverse proportional function (CIPF); (2) proposed a new weighted function; and (3) a new regularization form is derived and constructed. In this algorithm, the weighted function and the new smoothed function are combined as the sparsity-promoting object, and a new regularization form is derived and constructed to enhance de-noising performance. Performance simulation experiments on both the real signal and real images show that the proposed WReSL0 algorithm outperforms other popular approaches, such as SL0, BPDN, NSL0, and L p -RLSand achieves better performances when it is used for UBSS.

ABSTRACT

Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and autophagy activation play important roles in the process of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The synergistic protective effects of Geniposide and ursodeoxycholic acid against cellular apoptosis caused by oxygen-glucose deprivation-reoxygenation (OGD/R) were investigated using a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, flow cytometry, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and western blotting to examine cellular viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, mRNA and protein levels, respectively, in relation to ERS and autophagy. We found that pretreatment with Geniposide improved cellular viability. Moreover, treatment with a combination of Geniposide and Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) (GT) protected injured cells better than Geniposide alone. Further studies showed that the increase in cellular ROS levels, and the overexpression of mRNA and proteins related to OGD/R-induced ERS and autophagy, were both counteracted by GT. Our study indicates that the protective effects of GT on OGD/R-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells are associated with the inhibition of ERS and autophagy.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents one of the most common forms of liver disease worldwide, and it is always regarded as a consequence of a sedentary, food-abundant lifestyle, sitting for an extended time, and a low physical activity level, which often coincide with chronic and long-lasting psychological stress. A Chinese medicine Sinisan (SNS) may be a potential formula for treating this kind of disease. METHODS: In this study, a long-term chronic restraint stress protocol was used to investigate the mechanism underlying stress-induced NALFD. To investigate the effect of SNS treatment on stress-induced NAFLD, we measured the liver and serum values of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), liver free fatty acids (FFA), low-density lipoprotein, superoxide dismutase, tumor necrosis factor-α, malondialdehyde, interleukin (IL)-6, and serum values of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase. Results are shown as a mean ± standard deviation. Significant differences between the groups were evaluated using the Student t-test. For multiple comparisons, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. If the results of ANOVA indicated significant differences, post hoc analysis was performed with the Tukey test or Dunnett test, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Long-term chronic stress led to steatosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Additionally, SNS treatment significantly increased body weight gain (p < 0.01) and sucrose preference (p < 0.001), and it reduced the liver values of TC, TG, and FFA (p < 0.05). SNS also reduced the serum values of AST and ALT (p < 0.001), and the liver value of IL-6 (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: This study's results demonstrate that psychological stress may be a significant risk factor of NAFLD. Furthermore, the traditional Chinese medicine formula SNS may have some beneficial effect in antagonizing psychological stress and stress-related NAFLD.

ABSTRACT

To analyze the compatibility regularity of compound traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) patents for treating dyslipidemia, and provide basis for the clinical development and research of new TCM for treating dyslipidemia. Totally 243 compound traditional Chinese medicine patents for treating dyslipidemia were collected from the national patent database from September 1985 to March 2014 and analyzed by using drug frequency, association rules, complex network and entropy method of Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance System (V1.1). The commonest single medicine in the treatment of dyslipidemia is Crataegi Fructus 109 (44.86%). The commonest pair medicine is Crataegi Fructus-Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 53 (21.81%). The commonest corner drug is Crataegi Fructus-Cassiae Semen-Polygoni Multiflori Radix 25 (10.29%). The common prescriptions on basis of association rules are Prunellae Spica-->Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (0.833), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Alismatis Rhizoma-->Polygoni Multiflori Radix (1.00), Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Cassiae Semen, Alismatis Rhizoma-->Polygoni Multiflori Radix (0.929). The core drugs based on complex networks are Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Crataegi Fructus. The new prescriptions extracted by entropy method are Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma-Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma-Platycladi Semen-Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium-Poria-Coicis Semen-Pinelliae Rhizoma. This study shows the regularity in the compatibility of compound TCM patents treating dyslipidemia, suggesting that future studies on new traditional Chinese medicines treating dyslipidemia should focus on the following six aspects: (1) Single medicine should be preferred: e. g. Crataegi Fructus; (2) Pair medicines should be preferred: e. g. Crataegi Fructus-Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma; (3) Corner drugs should be preferred: e. g. Crataegi Fructus, Cassiae Semen, Polygoni Multiflori Radix; (4) The compatibility among drugs shall be given attention, and highly correlated drugs should be preferred: e. g. Prunellae Spica, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma; Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Alismatis Rhizoma, Polygoni Multiflori Radix; Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Cassiae Semen, Alismatis Rhizoma, Polygoni Multiflori Radix; (5) Core drugs should be dominant and compatible, e. g. in the digestion catharsis method, the core drugs is Crataegi Fructus and compatible with Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma; (6) Application of new prescriptions: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Platycladi Semen, Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Poria, Coicis Semen, Pinelliae Rhizoma.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the level of daily red meat intake and prevalence of excessive red meat intake among employees of floating population in China. METHODS: 48 511 employees of floating population aged 18 to 59 from 170 counties of 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (District) were selected by stratified cluster sampling method. Information on red meat intake was collected by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Average intake of 100 g/day, recommended by the World Cancer Research Fund, was used as the cut-off point to estimate the prevalence of excessive red meat intake. After performing the complex weighted analysis, level of daily red meat intake and prevalence of excessive red meat intake were calculated by demographic characteristics including age, education, industries and body mass index etc. RESULTS: 1)The mean daily red meat intake was 125.9 g (95%CI: 116.5 g-132.5 g), higher in men (141.6 g, 95%CI:131.3 g-148.9 g)than in women (104.7 g, 95%CI: 95.8 g-111.2 g) (P < 0.01). Results from the Tendency Test did not show statistically significant changes on the red meat intake related to age, education level or body mass index (P values for trend were all greater than 0.05). The standardized mean daily intake of red meat, adjusted by 2010 census data of China, was 121.0 g (95% CI:113.4 g-128.7 g). 2) The prevalence of excessive red meat intake was 36.2% (95% CI:33.0%-39.3%) significantly higher in males (42.4% , 95% CI:38.9%-45.8%) than in females (27.8%, 95%CI:27.1%-31.0%) (P < 0.01). The prevalence was estimated to be the highest among the population aged 30-39, with 43.5% (95%CI:39.7%-47.4%) in males and 30.1% (95%CI:26.5%-33.9%)in females. The standardized prevalence, adjusted by 2010 census data of China, appeared to be 34.6% (95%CI:31.9%-38.0%). CONCLUSION: The level of daily red meat intake was higher than 100 g/d, the standard recommended by the World Cancer Foundation, among floating population of China. Both the mean daily red meat intake and prevalence of excessive red meat intake were higher in floating population than that in the local residents in China.
