ABSTRACT

To improve the accuracy and robustness of autonomous vehicle localization in a complex environment, this paper proposes a multi-source fusion localization method that integrates GPS, laser SLAM, and an odometer model. Firstly, fuzzy rules are constructed to accurately analyze the in-vehicle localization deviation and confidence factor to improve the initial fusion localization accuracy. Then, an odometer model for obtaining the projected localization trajectory is constructed. Considering the high accuracy of the odometer's projected trajectory within a short distance, we used the shape of the projected localization trajectory to inhibit the initial fusion localization noise and used trajectory matching to obtain an accurate localization. Finally, the Dual-LSTM network is constructed to predict the localization and build an electronic fence to guarantee the safety of the vehicle while also guaranteeing the updating of short-distance localization information of the vehicle when the above-mentioned fusion localization is unreliable. Under the limited arithmetic condition of the vehicle platform, accurate and reliable localization is realized in a complex environment. The proposed method was verified by long-time operation on the real vehicle platform, and compared with the EKF fusion localization method, the average root mean square error of localization was reduced by 66%, reaching centimeter-level localization accuracy.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a shared steering control framework for lane keeping and obstacle avoidance based on multi-objective model predictive control. One of the control objectives is to track the reference trajectory, which is updated continuously by the trajectory planning module; whereas the other is to track the driver's current steering command, so as to consider the driver's intention. By adding the two control objectives to the cost function of an MPC shared controller, a smooth combination of the commands of the driver and the automation can be achieved through the optimization. The authority of the driver and the automation is allocated by adjusting the weights of the objective terms in the cost function, which is determined by the proposed situation assessment method considering the longitudinal and lateral risks simultaneously. The results of the CarSim-Matlab/Simulink joint simulations show that the proposed shared controller can assist the driver to complete the tasks of lane keeping and obstacle avoidance smoothly while maintaining a good level of vehicle stability.

ABSTRACT

A two-phase cross-modality fusion detector is proposed in this study for robust and high-precision 3D object detection with RGB images and LiDAR point clouds. First, a two-stream fusion network is built into the framework of Faster RCNN to perform accurate and robust 2D detection. The visible stream takes the RGB images as inputs, while the intensity stream is fed with the intensity maps which are generated by projecting the reflection intensity of point clouds to the front view. A multi-layer feature-level fusion scheme is designed to merge multi-modal features across multiple layers in order to enhance the expressiveness and robustness of the produced features upon which region proposals are generated. Second, a decision-level fusion is implemented by projecting 2D proposals to the space of the point cloud to generate 3D frustums, on the basis of which the second-phase 3D detector is built to accomplish instance segmentation and 3D-box regression on the filtered point cloud. The results on the KITTI benchmark show that features extracted from RGB images and intensity maps complement each other, and our proposed detector achieves state-of-the-art performance on 3D object detection with a substantially lower running time as compared to available competitors.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a two-layer controller for accurate and robust lateral path tracking control of highly automated vehicles. The upper-layer controller, which produces the front wheel steering angle, is implemented with a Linear Time-Varying MPC (LTV-MPC) whose prediction and control horizon are both optimized offline with particle swarm optimization (PSO) under varying working conditions. A constraint on the slip angle is imposed to prevent lateral forces from saturation to guarantee vehicle stability. The lower layer is a radial basis function neural network proportion-integral-derivative (RBFNN-PID) controller that generates electric current control signals executable by the steering motor to rapidly track the target steering angle. The nonlinear characteristics of the steering system are modeled and are identified on-line with the RBFNN so that the PID controller's control parameters can be adjusted adaptively. The results of CarSim-Matlab/Simulink joint simulations show that the proposed hierarchical controller achieves a good level of path tracking accuracy while maintaining vehicle stability throughout the path tracking process, and is robust to dynamic changes in vehicle velocities and road adhesion coefficients.
