ABSTRACT

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of immune granulomas in multiple organs. The cause of this disease is not yet clear. Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common malignant endocrine tumor and is often associated with cervical lymph node metastasis. Assessment of risk factors associated with a poor prognosis is crucial in PTC. The coexistence of sarcoidosis and thyroid cancer is rarely reported in the literature. We describe a case of a 54-year-old female diagnosed with PTC and asymptomatic cervical and thoracic hilar lymphadenopathy due to concurrent sarcoidosis. This case will remind clinicians to be aware of the multiple potential causes of lymphadenopathy and realize the importance of the differences in the features of neck lymphadenopathy in patients with suspected head and neck cancer. Overall, careful workup and pretreatment screening enabled us to provide the patient with the most suitable treatment modality and avoid total thyroidectomy.

ABSTRACT

Medical specimen photography is an indispensable step in medical education and scientific research. On the basis of a large number of shooting practices,a set of photography skills have been summed up,including the medical specimens shooting principles, sampling methods, camera equipments, backgrounds, light source and parameters.During medical specimen photography,we should make sure true process, accurate samples, clear image quality, layered main backgrounds, beautiful pictures and correct selection and usage of photographic equipments.Accordingly,a set of disposable small photo studios which are suitable for medical specimen shooting have been built to help medical workers improve the quality of photography in medical education and research specimens.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the mesh implants following minimally invasive abdominal sacrocolpopexy using three-dimensional ultrasound with OmniView and volume contrast imaging. Methods Sixteen patients underwent the mesh implant were examined from the 6 months to 1 0 months after sacrocolpopexy retrospectively by 3D OmniView combining with VCI to view the mesh at rest and on Valsalva. Results Nine cases appeared straight flat and 7 cases appeared folded or shrinkage among the 16 cases mesh implants.3D Omniview combining with VCI could image all the cases of mesh in any planes. The imaging rate was 100%.Conclusions 3D OmniView combining VCI can well image the mesh implants appeared shrinkage or folded.

ABSTRACT

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Papilio bianor was determined in the present paper. The complete mtDNA from P. bianor was 15,358 base pairs in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes and a control region. The P. bianor genes were in the same order and orientation as the completely sequenced mitogenomes of other lepidopteran species. To determine the phylogentic position of P. bianor with related species within Papilionidae, the Bayesian phylogenetic tree was reconstructed with the concatenated nucleotide dataset of the 13 protein-coding genes. The phylogenetic trees confirmed that P. bianor and four species of Papilionidae clustered into a clade, and shared a close relationship with Papilio maraho. Meanwhile, the molecular phylogenetic trees also confirmed that Papilionidae is a monophyletic group, and Pieridae is closely related with Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the clinical efficacy in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) of lung qi deficiency and cold syndrome between Jin's three-needle therapy and western medication.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty-six patients were randomized into an acupuncture group and a western medication group, 33 cases in each one. In the acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied at three-nose points [Yingxiang (LI 20), Shangyingxiang (EX-HN 8) and Yintang (GV 29); Cuanzhu (BL 2) was added for frontal headache] and three-back points [Dazhu (BL 11), Fengmen (BL 12) and Feishu (BL 13)], once every day. Ten treatments made one session. Two sessions of treatment were required. In the western medication group, desloratadine oral suspension was prescribed, 5 mg each time, once a day, for 20 days. The scores of the symptoms and physical signs in AR patients as well as the clinical efficacy were observed between the two groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The total effective rate was 93.9% (31/33) in the acupuncture group, which was better than 72.7% (24/33) in the western medication group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the scores of AR symptoms and physical signs as well as the total score were all reduced compared with those before treatment in the two groups (all P < 0.01). The score of every item in the acupuncture group was lower than that in the western medication group after treatment (score of symptoms: 4.70 +/- 2.07 vs 6.55 +/- 2. 69, score of physical signs: 0.85 +/- 0.67 vs 1.45 +/- +0.62, total score: 5.36 +/- 2.70 vs 8.00 +/- 2.91, all P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Jin's three-needle therapy achieves superior efficacy on AR of lung-qi deficiency and cold syndrome, which is better than desloratadine oral suspension.</p>

ABSTRACT

Novel N-arylsulfonyldipeptidyl aldehyde derivatives were prepared by DMSO oxidation from the corresponding dipeptide alcohol, and their potencies as calpain inhibitors were evaluated in vitro. Among them, N-(4-fluorophenylsulfonyl)-l-valyl-l-leucinal (8, SJA6017) potently inhibited calpains. 8 also inhibited cathepsin B and L but did not inhibit other cysteine proteases (interleukin 1beta-converting enzyme), serine proteases (trypsin, chymotrypsin, thrombin, factor VIIa, factor Xa), or proteasome. Preliminary cytotoxicity studies of 8 exhibited a relatively safe profile.

ABSTRACT

To elucidate abnormalities of LPL gene in hyperlipidemia in the Chinese population in Guangdong, genomic DNA was extracted from leukocyte of 258 patients with primary hyperlipidemia.A segment of LPL gene including exon 4 and its flanking sequences was analyzed by PCR-SSCP. The PCR products with abnormal SSCP pattern were cloned and sequenced. As a C-->T transition mutation at-6 bp of intron 3 was found in two Chinese with hyperlipidemia and the mutation was not found in 252 normolipidemic controls, the C-->T transition in intron 3 may be related to hyperlipedemia.

ABSTRACT

Fibroblasts, reticular cells and macrophages are the important components of bone marrow hemopoietic in liquid to study whether HP-Ⅱ-E(Hydroxyproli- ne-2-epimerase, EC5, 1, 1,a) is involved in the synthesis of functional proteins of stromal cells. The femoral bone of 6 to 8 week-old 615 mice were made in suspension for cell culture in vitro. DMEM medium supplied with 25% calf serum was used After one to fifteen day's attaching incubation in stationary liquid the culture cells were stained with Giemsa, nonspecific esterase and HP-Ⅱ-E at different intervals. From the third day of the incubation, reticular cells began to develop form- ing stallate cells of the bone marrow. During an earlier time, enzymatic reaction was only observed in the nuclear membrance, but after three day's culture all the enzymatic activity in the cells increased dramatically. The enzymatic reac- tive granules were abundant in the outer cytoplasma of the stallate cells and fibroblasts and the cytoplasma of the macrophages. It was observed that hyd- roxyproline was changed by epimerase,
