ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the prognosis relevant factors of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).Methods From January 2013 to December 2013,the clinical data of 71 patients with LSCC who were initially treated in Zhejiang Cancer Hospital were retrospectively analyzed.Results Univariate analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in survival rate between the group of supraglottic type and glottic type (60.0% vs.86.3% ,χ2 =6.284,P<0.05),the group of N0 and N+(41.7% vs.86.4% ,χ2 =16.803,P<0.01), the group of early and late stage(93.6% vs.50.0% ,χ2 =19.854,P<0.01).There were no statistically significant differences in survival rate between the group of age ≤50,>50-60,>60-70 and >70(88.9% vs.88.2% vs. 79.3% vs.62.5% ,χ2 =3.909,P>0.05),the group of T1+T2 and T3+T4(83.6% vs.62.5% ,χ2 =3.623,P>0.05),the group of high,medium,low differentiated and unsigned(75.0% vs.69.7% vs.83.3% vs.91.7% ,χ2 =3.780,P>0.05),the group of surgery,radiotherapy and surgery+radiotherapy (74.3% vs.90.9% vs.71.4% , χ2 =2.437,P>0.05).Multivariate analysis showed that age( P =0.003),treatment( P =0.048) had significant effect on the prognosis of patients,but tumor location(P=0.766),T stage(P=0.677),N stage(P=0.482),clinical stage(P=0.825),the degree of pathological differentiation(P=0.206) had no significant effect on the prognosis of patients.Conclusion More aggressive treatment should be supplied for patients with N+,advanced clinical stage and age whom the prognosis are usually poor. In addition, the proportion of tracheal tube extraction should be appreciated.

ABSTRACT

Intronic microRNAs (in-miRNAs) as a class of miRNA family that regulates gene expression are still poorly understood in plants. In this study, we systematically identified rice in-miRNAs by re-mining eight published small RNA-sequencing datasets of rice. Furthermore, based on the collected expression, annotation, and putative target data, we investigated the structures, potential functions, and expression features of these in-miRNAs and the expression patterns of their host genes. A total of 153 in-miRNAs, which account for over 1/4 of the total rice miRNAs, were identified. In silico expression analysis showed that most of them (∼63%) are tissue or stage-specific. However, a majority of their host genes, especially those containing clustered in-miRNAs, exhibit stable high-level expressions among 513 microarray datasets. Although in-miRNAs show diversity in function and mechanism, the DNA methylation directed by 24 nt in-miRNAs may be the main pathway that controls the expressions of target genes, host genes, and even themselves. These findings may enhance our understanding on special functions of in-miRNAs, especially in mediating DNA methylation that was concluded to affect the stability of expression and structure of host and target genes.

ABSTRACT

Plant microRNAs (miRNAs) act as negative regulators of gene expression by slicing target transcripts or inhibiting translation. A number of miRNAs play important roles in development. In order to investigate the potential function of miRNAs during male gametogenesis in rice, we obtained both gene and small RNA expression profiles by combining microarray and high-throughput sequencing technologies. From the microarray datasets, 2,925 male gametophyte-specific genes were identified, including 107 transcription factors and three significant Argonaute genes (AGO12, AGO13, and AGO17). From the sRNA-Seq datasets, 104 unique miRNAs (miRus) were identified, including 47 known miRus and 57 novel miRus; interestingly, most of the new miRus are pollen-specific and not conserved among species. Furthermore, an interactive network of miRNA-target was constructed based on the two datasets. By employing enrichment analysis, the miRNA-regulated targets were found to be involved in both the up and down pathways, but predominantly in the down pathways, including 37 GO biological processes and 32 KEGG pathways. These findings indicate that miRNAs play a broad regulatory role during male gametophyte development in rice.

OBJECTIVE@#To provide a basic anatomical study of clinical endoscopic surgical approach, we investigated the pterygopalatine fossa anatomy through lateral wall of the nasal cavity approach under endoscopy.@*METHOD@#To observe important symbols and the neurovascular structure and its relations with the surrounding structure of pterygopalatine fossa, we dissect ten fresh cadaveric heads via lateral wall of the nasal cavity approach under endoscopy.@*RESULT@#(1) The anatomical relations between pterygopalatine fossa and the surrounding structure were complicated, and internal maxillary artery and its branches were variate greatly. (2) Sphenopalatine foramen, infraorbital canal, foramen rotundum and pterygoid canal were the important symbol of bone of pterygopalatine fossa, and pterygopalatine fossa could be used as an access into the infratemporal fossa and sphenoid sinus.@*CONCLUSION@#(1) An intimate knowledge of the constant anatomical symbols of the pterygopalatine fossa and the surrounding structure would maintain a sense of direction and improve surgery safety. (2) The pterygopalatine fossa could be exposed fully under endoscopy, and the vision was clear. Besides, the important nerves and vessels would be well protected, and operative approach was flexible according to the scope of pathological changes. (3) The near anatomic region could be accessed and the pathological changes could be treated through the endoscopic surgical approach.
