ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Warfighters are exposed to life-threatening injuries daily and according to the Joint Trauma System Military Clinical Practice Guideline-Global Snake Envenomation Management snakebites are a concerning threat in all theaters of operation. Snake venom is a complex mixture of toxins including phospholipases A2 (PLA2) and snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMP) that produce myotoxic, hemotoxic, and cytotoxic injuries. Antibody-based antivenom is the standard of care but new approaches including small-molecule inhibitors have gained attention in recent years. Doxycycline is an effective inhibitor of human metalloproteinases and PLA2. The enzymatic activities of 3 phylogenetically distinct snakes: Agkistrodon piscivorus, Naja kaouthia, and Daboia russelii were tested under inhibitory conditions using doxycycline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enzymatic activity of PLA2 and SVMP was measured in N. kaouthia, D. russelii, and A. piscivorus venom alone and with doxycycline using EnzChek Phospholipase A2 and Gelatinase Assay Kits. A 1-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test was used to conduct comparative analysis. The median lethal dose of the venoms, the effective dose of doxycycline, and creatine kinase (CK) inhibition levels were measured in a murine model with adult Bagg Albino (BALB/c) mice using intramuscular injections. Median lethal and effective doses were determined using Spearman-Karber's method and a 1-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test was used to compare CK inhibition levels. RESULTS: Phospholipases A2 activity was reduced to 1.5% to 44.0% in all 3 venoms in a dose-dependent manner using 0.32, 0.16, and 0.08 mg/mL doxycycline when compared to venom-only controls (P < .0001) (Fig. 1A). Snake venom metalloproteinases activity was reduced to 4% to 62% in all 3 venoms in a dose-dependent manner using 0.32, 0.16, and 0.08 mg/mL doxycycline (P < .0001) (Fig. 1B). The lethal dose (LD50) values of the venoms in the murine model were calculated as follows: A. piscivorus = 20.29 mg/kg (Fig. 2A), N. kaouthia = 0.38 mg/kg (Fig. 2B), and D. russelii = 7.92 mg/kg (Fig. 2C). The effective dose (ED50) of doxycycline in A. piscivorus was calculated to be 20.82 mg/kg and 72.07 mg/kg when treating D. russelii venom. No ED50 could be calculated when treating N. kaouthia venom (Fig. 3). Creatine kinase activity was significantly decreased in all 3 venoms treated with doxycycline (P < .0001) (Fig. 4). CONCLUSION: Doxycycline reduced PLA2- and SVMP-related lethality, particularly in A. piscivorus envenomings and in a limited capacity with D. russelii revealing its promise as a treatment for snakebites. In addition, CK activity, a common indicator of muscle damage was inhibited in mice that received doxycycline-treated venom. The doxycycline concentrations identified in the ED50 studies correspond to 1,456 to 5,061 mg dosages for a 70 kg human. Factors including venom yield and snake species would affect the actual dosage needed. Studies into high-dose doxycycline safety and its effectiveness against several snake species is needed to fully translate its use into humans. Based on this work, doxycycline could be used as a treatment en route to higher echelons of care, providing protection from muscle damage and reducing lethality in different snake species.

ABSTRACT

Charities often use incentives to increase prosocial action. However, charities sometimes downplay these incentives in their messaging (pilot study), possibly to avoid demotivating donors. We challenge this strategy, examining whether increasing the salience of incentives for prosocial action can in fact motivate charitable behavior. Three controlled experiments (N = 2,203 adults) and a field study with an alumni-donation campaign (N = 22,468 adults) found that more (vs. less) salient incentives are more effective at increasing prosocial behavior when prosocial motivation is low (vs. high). This is because more (vs. less) salient incentives increase relative consideration of self-interest (vs. other-regarding) benefits, which is a stronger driver of behavior at low (vs. high) levels of prosocial motivation. By identifying that prosocial motivation moderates the effect of incentive salience on charitable behavior, and by detailing the underlying mechanism, we advance theory and practice on incentive salience, motivation, and charitable giving.

BACKGROUND: To develop a fully automated in-house gamma analysis software for the "Cheese" phantom-based delivery quality assurance (QA) of helical tomotherapy plans. METHODS: The developed in-house software was designed to automate several procedures, which need to be manually performed using commercial software packages. The region of interest for the analysis was automatically selected by cropping out film edges and thresholding dose values (>10% of the maximum dose). The film-measured dose was automatically aligned to the computed dose using an image registration algorithm. An optimal film scaling factor was determined to maximize the percentage of pixels passing gamma (gamma passing rate) between the measured and computed doses (3%/3 mm criteria). This gamma analysis was repeated by introducing setup uncertainties in the anterior-posterior direction. For 73 tomotherapy plans, the gamma analysis results using the developed software were compared to those analyzed by medical physicists using a commercial software package. RESULTS: The developed software successfully automated the gamma analysis for the tomotherapy delivery quality assurance. The gamma passing rate (GPR) calculated by the developed software was higher than that by the clinically used software by 3.0%, on average. While, for 1 of the 73 plans, the GPR by the manual gamma analysis was higher than 90% (pass/fail criteria), the gamma analysis using the developed software resulted in fail (GPR < 90%). CONCLUSIONS: The use of automated and standardized gamma analysis software can improve both the clinical efficiency and veracity of the analysis results. Furthermore, the gamma analyses with various film scaling factors and setup uncertainties will provide clinically useful information for further investigations.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries are a limiting factor in maintaining dental and medical readiness in the military. Untreated dental caries can lead to dire health consequences. Consistent and comprehensive access to dental care is often limited due to the intensive operational demands on our nation's warfighters. The standard of care for dental caries is a surgical model where diseased tooth tissue is surgically removed and restored with appropriate restorative materials. While effective, it is not practical in the military operational environment, especially under time constraints. Dental restoratives offer military personnel a simple and preventive treatment of dental caries and are suitable as self-applied first aids. The purpose of this study was to measure the shear bond strengths of two dental restorative materials to human teeth paired with two different fluoride treatments and the hardness and biofilm formation on teeth after applying the fluoride varnishes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens were made of human molar teeth treated with each of the following four materials: glass ionomer cement GC Fuji II LC Capsules, Filtek Z250, Riva Star steps 1 and 2, or Mark3 NaF varnish. Step 1 of Riva Star consists of silver diamine fluoride and step 2 contains potassium iodide. On human molar slabs, 10 circular specimens of 5 cm in diameter were prepared with restoratives according to manufacturer procedures. Etch-Rite and a proprietary aluminum chloride-based cavity conditioner were used as etchants on tooth surfaces for the Filtek Z250 and glass ionomer cement, respectively. After at least 24 hours underwater, each assembly was removed, and the shear bond strength of the adhesive was measured according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 29022.The hardness was measured according to ISO 14233. Hardness measurements were performed before varnish application, then after storage in an incubator at 37 °C for 4 hours in a demineralization solution (pH = 4.5), and after 1 day in a mineralization solution (pH = 7). A crystal violet staining assay was used to measure biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans bacteria on human molar teeth after the application of fluoride varnish. RESULTS: We report a 16% increase in shear bond strength of the Filtek Z250/Riva Star coupled treatment compared to the Filtek Z250/Mark3 NaF coupled treatment. We also demonstrate a significant 84% decrease in bond strength with a GC Fuji II LC/Mark3 NaF treatment compared to control (P = .0002), while Riva Star remains statistically unchanged. Enamel and dentinal hardness are significantly improved when Riva Star is applied compared to NaF varnish. A 25%-35% (P < .0001) decrease in oral biofilm formation was observed on samples where a Riva Star or NaF varnish was applied. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical and antimicrobial testing indicated Riva Star, compared favorably with and in some cases, performed better in the laboratory than a Mark3 NaF varnish. Hardness measurements indicated Riva Star is more effective in dentin tubule occlusion compared to NaF varnish. Our findings help provide practical suggestions to dental treatment, particularly to the unique dental environments seen in the military. Riva Star may be used as an adjunctive treatment prior to placing a final restoration. This study supports the use of Riva Star in conjunction with GC Fuji II LC or Filtek Z250 restorative materials, making it a promising treatment in military dental applications.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Drinks containing added sugar and/or non-nutritive sweeteners are not recommended for children under 6 years. Yet, most young children consume these products. The current study examined factors associated with caregivers' provision of sweetened drinks to their young child. DESIGN: Caregivers reported frequency of providing sweetened fruit-flavoured drinks (fruit drinks and flavoured water) and unsweetened juices (100 % juice and juice/water blends) to their 1- to 5-year-old child in the past month and perceived importance of product attributes (healthfulness, product claims and other characteristics), other drinks provided, reading the nutrition facts panel and socio-demographic characteristics. A partial proportional odds model measured the relationship between these factors and frequency of providing sweetened fruit-flavoured drinks. SETTING: Online cross-sectional survey. PARTICIPANTS: U.S. caregivers (n 1763) with a young child (ages 1-5). RESULTS: The majority (74 %) of caregivers provided sweetened fruit-flavoured drinks to their child in the past month; 26 % provided them daily. Provision frequency was positively associated with some drink attributes, including perceived healthfulness, vitamin C claims and box/pouch packaging; child requests and serving other sweetened drinks and juice/water blends. Provision frequency was negatively associated with perceived importance of 'no/less sugar' and 'all natural' claims. Reading nutrition facts panels, serving water to their child and child's age were not significant. CONCLUSION: Misunderstanding of product healthfulness and other marketing attributes contribute to frequent provision of sweetened drinks to young children. Public health efforts to address common misperceptions, including counter marketing, may raise awareness among caregivers about the harms of providing sweetened drinks to young children.

BACKGROUND: Against expert recommendations, sugar-sweetened beverages, especially fruit drinks, are consumed by young children. Misperceptions about drink ingredients and healthfulness can contribute to caregivers' provision. OBJECTIVES: To assess caregivers' reasons for serving sweetened fruit-flavored drinks and unsweetened juices to their young children (1-5 y) and perceptions of product healthfulness and drink ingredients. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey assessed participants' (n = 1614) perceptions of sweetened fruit-flavored drinks (fruit drinks and flavored water) and unsweetened juices (100% juice and water/juice blends) provided to their child in the past month, including product healthfulness, reasons for providing, and knowledge of product ingredients [added sugar, nonnutritive sweeteners (NNSs), percentage juice]. One-factor ANOVA compared perceived healthfulness of drink categories and types of sugar and NNSs, and differences between participants who could compared with those who could not accurately identify drink ingredients. RESULTS: Participants' top reasons for providing sweetened drinks included child liking it, being inexpensive, child asking for it, and being a special treat. Participants perceived 100% juice as healthiest, followed by juice/water blends, flavored waters, and, lastly, fruit drinks (P < 0.05). Many participants inaccurately believed the fruit drink or flavored water they served their child most often did not contain NNSs (59.0% and 64.9%) and/or added sugars (20.1% and 42.2%), when in fact they did, and 81.3-91.1% overestimated the percentage juice in the drink. Perceived healthfulness of fruit drinks was associated with caregivers' belief that the drink contained added sugar (P < 0.05), but not with their belief that it contained NNS; increased accuracy was associated with decreased perceived healthfulness (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Inaccurate understanding of added sugar, NNSs, and percentage juice in drinks served to young children was common and could contribute to sugary drink provision. Public health efforts should seek to improve labeling practices and revise nutrition education messages.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Sugar-sweetened beverages contribute a large proportion of added sugar in young children's diets; yet, companies market sugar-sweetened children's drinks extensively to children and parents. This study examines the changes in children's drink purchases by U.S. households with young children and the associations with marketing practices. METHODS: Longitudinal Nielsen U.S. household panel data provided monthly volume purchases by children's drink category (sugar-sweetened fruit drinks and flavored water and unsweetened juices) among households with young children (aged 1-5 years) from 2006 to 2017. Differences by household race/ethnicity and income were assessed. The 2-part models examined the associations between household purchases and marketing (including price and brand TV advertising) for each category, controlling for sociodemographics. Data were collected and analyzed in 2019-2020. RESULTS: Households' volume purchases of children's fruit drinks and unsweetened juices declined from 2006 to 2017, whereas flavored water purchases increased. Non-Hispanic Black households purchased significantly more fruit drinks (351.23 fluid ounces/month, 95% CI=342.63, 359.82) than non-Hispanic White (204.43 fluid ounces/month, 95% CI=201.81, 207.05) and Hispanic (222.63 fluid ounces/month, 95% CI=217.11, 228.15) households. Low-income households purchased more fruit drinks and fewer unsweetened juices than higher-income households (p<0.001). TV brand advertising was positively associated with purchases across all categories, and this relationship was stronger for low-income households (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Despite expert recommendations that young children do not consume Sugar-sweetened beverages, households with young children purchase more sweetened fruit drinks than unsweetened juices. Extensive TV advertising for children's drink brands may exacerbate the racial and income disparities in sugar-sweetened beverage purchases. Public health initiatives to address sugar-sweetened beverage consumption by young children and restrictions on marketing sugar-sweetened beverages to children are necessary.

ABSTRACT

This study developed postbiotics with whey bioconversion product produced by Enterococcus faecalis M157 KACC 81148BP, and mixed whey bioconversion products produced by E. faecalis M157 KACC 81148BP and Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis CAU2013 KACC 81152BP to alleviate periodontitis (PD) and to improve gut health. The powdered whey bioconversion product (EF) produced by E. faecalis M157 KACC 81148BP, mixed whey bioconversion products (EF+LL) from E. faecalis M157 KACC 81148BP and L. lactis CAU2013 KACC 81152BP, and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS; control) were administered orally to PD-induced rats for 8 wk. Infiltration of inflammatory cells and epithelial proliferation in periodontal tissue were found in control, but the lesions were reduced in PD+EF group (administration of EF to PD-induced rats), and no lesions were observed in PD+EF+LL group (administration of EF+LL to PD-induced rats). The bone loss volumes in PD+EF and PD+EF+LL groups were lower than in control. Cytokine production levels related to inflammation were lower and antioxidative stress markers were higher in PD+EF and PD+EF+LL groups than in control for both periodontal tissue and gut. The ratios of Lactobacillus spp. in gut microbiome of PD+EF and PD+EF+LL groups were higher than in control. These results indicate that the whey bioconversion product produced by E. faecalis M157 KACC 81148BP, and mixed whey bioconversion products produced by E. faecalis M157 KACC 81148BP and L. lactis CAU2013 KACC 81152BP are effective on relieving periodontitis and improving the gut health.

BACKGROUND: Children's fast-food consumption increases risks for obesity and other diet-related diseases. To address concerns, from 2010 to 2016 U.S. fast-food restaurants implemented voluntary policies to offer healthier drinks and/or sides with kids' meals. OBJECTIVES: Examine the effectiveness of voluntary kids' meal policies. METHODS: Online repeated cross-sectional survey (2010, 2013, 2016) of U.S. caregivers (N = 2093) who purchased fast-food for their child (2-11 years) in the past week. Logistic regression examined associations between healthier kids' meal policy implementation and caregivers' purchases of kids' meals and selection of healthier sides and drinks. Separate models investigated caregivers' attitudes about McDonald's kids' meal items. RESULTS: Overall, 55% of caregivers reported choosing a kids' meal for their child, and approximately one-half of those caregivers selected a healthier drink and/or side. Healthier kids' meal policy implementation was associated with increased selection of healthier sides, but not healthier drinks or choice of kids' meals over higher-calorie menu items. Child's age, caregiver gender and visit frequency were significant in most models. Caregivers' perceptions that their child(ren) like healthier drinks and sides were positively associated with selection of those items. CONCLUSIONS: Existing healthier kids' meal policies may not improve children's fast-food consumption. Public health initiatives should examine more effective alternatives.

ABSTRACT

Salivary gland hypofunction after irradiation is associated with a deficit of epithelial stem/progenitors in salivary glands. Although epidermal growth factor (EGF) is known to stimulate the proliferation of epithelial cells, the therapeutic effect of EGF on salivary epithelial stem/progenitors remains undetermined. In this study, we administered EGF to submandibular glands (SMGs) via a retrograde route through the SMG excretory duct before fractionated irradiation and examined whether EGF could protect salivary epithelial progenitor cells from radiation and alleviate radiation-induced salivary hypofunction. EGF-treated mice exhibited greater body and gland weights at 12 wk after irradiation than untreated mice. The retroductal delivery of EGF improved salivary secretory function and increased salivary amylase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Histological examinations highlighted the amelioration of the loss of keratine-14+ (KRT14+) basal ductal and/or MIST1+ acinar cells, as well as induction of fibrosis, following irradiation in EGF-treated mice. An additional in vitro experiment using a salivary gland organoid irradiation model indicated that the radioprotective effects of EGF promoted the growth and inhibited the apoptotic cell death of salivary epithelial cells. Our results suggest that retroductal delivery of EGF may be a promising therapeutic option for preventing radiation-induced salivary gland hypofunction.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to analyze the effect of milk fermented with Lactobacillus curvatus SMFM2016-NK on periodontal diseases and gut health in a rat model. To improve the effect of Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk administration for relieving periodontitis, the periodontitis rat models were treated with the following for 4 wk: 10% skim milk (normal), periodontitis + 10% skim milk (negative control), periodontitis + Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG-fermented milk (positive control), and periodontitis + Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk (PD+LCFM). Transcriptional analysis of inflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-10] was performed via quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. The changes in the oral and gut microbiomes after administering Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk were analyzed with metagenomics sequencing using DNA extracted from the oral gingival tissues and feces from the cecum of the rat models. After treatment with Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk, the relative gene expression levels of TNFA and IL1B in the gingiva decreased in the PD+LCFM group compared with those in the negative control group. In the oral microbiome, the proportion of the phylum Proteobacteria in the PD+LCFM group was lower than that in the negative control after treatment with Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk. For the effect in the gut, the relative gene expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in the colon between the normal and negative control groups were not different; however, the expression levels of TNFA and IL1B in the PD+LCFM and positive control groups, respectively, were lower than those in the negative control group. The composition and diversity of the gut microbiome differed among normal, periodontitis, and Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk treatment groups. These results indicate that Lb. curvatus SMFM2016-NK-fermented milk could alleviate periodontal and gut inflammation and change oral and gut microbiota.

ABSTRACT

Optical microendoscopy enabled by a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scanning mirror offers great potential for in vivo diagnosis of early cancer inside the human body. However, an additional beam folding mirror is needed for a MEMS mirror to perform forward-view scanning, which drastically increases the diameter of the resultant MEMS endoscopic probe. This paper presents a new monolithic two-axis forward-view optical scanner that is composed of an electrothermally driven MEMS mirror and a beam folding mirror both vertically standing and integrated on a silicon substrate. The mirror plates of the two mirrors are parallel to each other with a small distance of 0.6 mm. The laser beam can be incident first on the MEMS mirror and then on the beam folding mirror, both at 45°. The MEMS scanner has been successfully fabricated. The measured optical scan angles of the MEMS mirror were 10.3° for the x axis and 10.2° for the y axis operated under only 3 V. The measured tip-tilt resonant frequencies of the MEMS mirror were 1590 Hz and 1850 Hz, respectively. With this compact MEMS design, a forward-view scanning endoscopic probe with an outer diameter as small as 2.5 mm can be made, which will enable such imaging probes to enter the subsegmental bronchi of an adult patient.

ABSTRACT

Snake venoms are inherently complex. They are mixtures of multiple enzymes, peptides, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleosides, and metal ions. Metal ions make up a small portion of a snake's venom but play outsized roles in enzyme function and stability. Unlike enzyme primary structure, which is easily predicted from genomic sequences, a venom's metal ion content must be measured directly. We leveraged the high throughput and sensitivity of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to analyze the metal ion content of seven North American snake venoms. All venoms were collected from snakes reared at one location, so we could discount variation from environmental or geographical factors. We profiled 71 metal isotopes. Selenium isotopes were consistently high across all venoms tested. When each venom's toxicity was graphed as a function of each different metal isotope, the only strong relationships between metal content and toxicity were for magnesium isotopes.

ABSTRACT

The United States (US) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides free infant formula to low-income families with infants. State WIC agencies periodically solicit bids from manufacturers for the exclusive contract to provide infant formula in exchange for considerable rebates. Using Nielsen 2006-2015 retail scanner data, we estimated a difference-in-difference model to examine how winning a WIC infant formula contract affects sales of the new (winning) and former brands, including effects on sales of products not eligible for WIC (spillover). One year following a contract change, volume sales of WIC infant formula increased 322% (p < 0.01) for the new brand and decreased 77% (p < 0.01) for the former brand. Spillover effects included a 43% increase in sales of toddler milks for the new brand 2 years after the contract change. State WIC contracts allow manufacturers to market formula directly to consumers and may reduce breastfeeding policy effectiveness.

ABSTRACT

This study developed a unique system by combining the novel vertical flow (NVF) using expanded clay (ExC) and free flow surface constructed wetland (FWS) for dormitory sewage purification and reuse. The NVF tank consisted of filter layers of ExC, sandy soil, sand, and gravel. The FWS consisted of sandy soil substrate and was installed after the NVF. Colocasia esculenta and Dracaena sanderiana was planted in NVF and FWS, respectively. The treatment system was operated and tested for more than 21 weeks by increasing the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) from 0.02 m/d to 0.12 m/d. The results demonstrated that effluents in the system changed proportionally to the HLRs, except for nitrate nitrogen. Furthermore, the maximum removal efficiencies for TSS, BOD5, NH4-N, and Tcol were 76 ± 13%, 74 ± 11%, 90 ± 3%, and 59 ± 18% (0.37 ± 0.19 log10MPN/100 mL), respectively. At HLRs of 0.04-0.06 m/d, the treatment system satisfied the limits of agriculture irrigation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Extensive marketing of 'toddler milks' (sugar-sweetened milk-based drinks for toddlers) promotes unsubstantiated product benefits and raises concerns about consumption by young children. The present study documents trends in US toddler milk sales and assesses relationships with brand and category marketing. DESIGN: We report annual US toddler milk and infant formula sales and marketing from 2006 to 2015. Sales response models estimate associations between marketing (television advertising spending, product price, number of retail displays) and volume sales of toddler milks by brand and category. SETTING: US Nielsen retail scanner sales and advertising spending data from 2006 to 2015. PARTICIPANTS: Researchers analysed all Universal Product Codes (n 117·4 million) sold by seven infant formula and eight toddler milk brands from 2006 to 2015. RESULTS: Advertising spending on toddler milks increased fourfold during this 10-year period and volume sales increased 2·6 times. In contrast, advertising spending and volume sales of infant formulas declined. Toddler milk volume sales were positively associated with television advertising and retail displays, and negatively associated with price, at both the brand and category levels. CONCLUSIONS: Aggressive marketing of toddler milks has likely contributed to rapid sales increases in the USA. However, these sugar-sweetened drinks are not recommended for toddler consumption. Health-care providers, professional organizations and public health campaigns should provide clear guidance and educate parents to reduce toddler milk consumption and address misperceptions about their benefits. These findings also support the need to regulate marketing of toddler milks in countries that prohibit infant formula marketing to consumers.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Dental readiness, one critical component of medical readiness, is adversely impacted by dental emergencies. Many dental emergencies require restorative materials such as glass ionomers, resins, and zinc oxide eugenols to remedy them. The Authorized Dental Allowance List (ADAL) and Authorized Medical Allowance List (AMAL) contain the equipment and materials used by Navy dentists to treat Sailors and Marines. These supplies are subjected to harsh storage conditions on deployments. Much is known about how materials behave when stored at room temperature, but less is known about how their properties are affected after exposure to high temperatures and humidity. We subjected five dental restorative materials to storage in aggravated conditions, and then tested them to determine which products are more robust. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unopened packages of Fuji Triage, Fuji IX GP (both GC America Inc., Alsip, Illinois), TPH Spectra ST Low Viscosity, Intermediate Restorative Material (both Dentsply Sirona, York, Pennsylvania), and Herculite XRV (Kerr Corporation, Orange, California) were exposed to 0, 5, or 10 days' storage at 30-60°C with 95% relative humidity. After storage in these aggravated conditions, we tested the compressive strength, hardness, elastic modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, sorption, and solubility of each material. RESULTS: The physical properties of all materials were affected by storage in aggravated conditions, though the properties of some materials degraded more than others. Both glass ionomers, Fuji Triage (P = 0.0012) and Fuji IX GP (P = 0.0031), and the composite Herculite XRV (P = 0.0253) lost compressive strength after 5 or 10 days in aggravated conditions. The hardness values for all materials were affected (P < 0.05) by the aggravated conditions, though the elastic modulus of TPH Spectra was not affected (P > 0.05). None of the materials lost flexural strength (P > 0.05) or had changes in their flexural modulus (P > 0.05). The water sorption behavior of Fuji Triage (P = 0.0426) and Fuji IX GP (P = 0.0201) changed after 10 days of aggravated storage, and the solubility of all materials was altered by the harsh conditions. CONCLUSION: Some materials degrade more than others in aggravated conditions. Both resin composite materials were more resistant to high temperatures and humidity levels than the glass ionomers tested. These changes in physical characteristics should be considered when reviewing or optimizing the ADAL/AMAL for different projected operational environments.
