ABSTRACT

Two metal borate-carbonates, M6[Cd2(CO3)2(B12O18)(OH)6] [M = K (1), Rb (2)], were obtained under surfactant-thermal conditions. In 1 and 2, each cyclic [(B12O18)(OH)6]6- anion captures two CdCO3 in two sides of the rings and finally forms the unusual (CdCO3)2@[(B12O18)(OH)6] cluster. Both 1 and 2 show moderate birefringence. Density functional theory calculations indicate that carbonate groups have a major contribution to electron-related optical transition.

ABSTRACT

A new noncentrosymmetric strontium borate, P1-Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2 ⋅ [B(OH)3] ⋅ H2O (1), has been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition. The P1-Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2 ⋅ [B(OH)3] ⋅ H2O shows a layered B-O network with 9-ring windows in the ab plane. Sr2+ cations, H3BO3, and H2O molecules are located in the voids of layers and interlayers, respectively. The P1-Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2 ⋅ [B(OH)3] ⋅ H2O is the first synthetic phase of veatchite, while the other three polymorphs are found in different natural minerals. This strontium borate is a potential deep-ultraviolet-transparent nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystal whose second-harmonic-generation (SHG) intensity is 1.7 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and is phase-matchable. The short wavelength cutoff edge of compound 1 is below 190 nm. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the B-O units are responsible for the nonlinear optical property.

ABSTRACT

Crystalline borates have received great attention due to their various structures and wide applications. For a long time, the corner-sharing B-O unit is considered a basic rule in borate structural chemistry. The Dy4B6O15 synthesized under high-pressure is the first oxoborate with edge-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra, while the KZnB3O6 is the first ambient pressure borate with the edge-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra. The edge-sharing connection modes greatly enrich the structural chemistry of borates and are expected to expand new applications in the future. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in crystalline borates with edge-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra. We discuss the synthesis, fundamental building blocks, structural features, and possible applications of these edge-sharing borates. Finally, we also discuss the future perspectives in this field.

ABSTRACT

At present, the differentiation potential and antioxidant activity of feline umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) have not been clearly studied. In this study, feline UC-MSCs were isolated by tissue adhesion method, identified by flow cytometry detection of cell surface markers (CD44, CD90, CD34, and CD45), and induced differentiation toward osteogenesis and adipogenesis in vitro. Furthermore, the oxidative stress model was established with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (100 µM, 300 µM, 500 µM, 700 µM, and 900 µM). The antioxidant properties of feline UC-MSCs and feline fibroblasts were compared by morphological observation, ROS detection, cell viability via CCK-8 assay, as well as oxidative and antioxidative parameters via ELISA. The mRNA expression of genes related to NF-κB pathway was detected via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, while the levels of NF-κB signaling cascade-related proteins were determined via Western Blot. The results showed that feline UC-MSCs highly expressed CD44 and CD90, while negative for CD34 and CD45 expression. Feline UC-MSCs cultured under osteogenic and adipogenic conditions showed good differentiation capacity. After being exposed to different concentrations of H2O2 for eight hours, feline UC-MSCs exhibited the significantly higher survival rate than feline fibroblasts. A certain concentration of H2O2 could up-regulate the activities of SOD2 and GSH-Px in feline UC-MSCs. The expression levels of p50, MnSOD, and FHC mRNA in feline UC-MSCs stimulated by 300 µM and 500 µM H2O2 significantly increased compared with the control group. Furthermore, it was observed that 500 µM H2O2 significantly enhanced the protein levels of p-IκB, IκB, p-p50, p50, MnSOD, and FHC, which could be reversed by BAY 11-7,082, a NF-κB signaling pathway inhibitor. In conclusion, it was confirmed that feline UC-MSCs, with good osteogenesis and adipogenesis abilities, had better antioxidant property which might be related to NF-κB signaling pathway. This study lays a foundation for the further application of feline UC-MSCs in treating the various inflammatory and oxidative injury diseases of pets.

ABSTRACT

The development of novel systems for chiral polyoxometalates (POMs) is an attractive research field because of their fascinating topological structures and well-defined functions. Herein, we have developed a new reaction route for the synthesis of two unprecedented chiral Waugh POM-based supramolecular architectures. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the architectures exhibit a wavy three-dimensional framework and bamboo-rod-connected framework upon regulating the size of the cyclodextrin and the stacking pattern of the D3 symmetric Waugh {MnMo9}. Solution studies using NMR, circular dichroism and isothermal titration calorimetry corroborate nicely the very weak interactions between the components. The intricate chiral microenvironment originating from the hybrid frameworks may be responsible for the selective recognition of the Λ-{MnMo9} enantiomer. This study highlights the importance of the asymmetric configuration of the POM for designing CD/POM assemblies and understanding their chirality.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To develop a predictive model for pathologic complete response (pCR) of ipsilateral supraclavicular lymph nodes (ISLN) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer and guide the local treatment. Methods: Two hundred and eleven consecutive breast cancer patients with first diagnosis of ipsilateral supraclavicular lymph node metastasis who underwent ipsilateral supraclavicular lymph node dissection and treated in the Breast Department of Henan Cancer Hospital from September 2012 to May 2019 were included. One hundred and forty two cases were divided into the training set while other 69 cases into the validation set. The factors affecting ipsilateral supraclavicular lymph node pCR (ispCR)of breast cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, and a nomogram prediction model of ispCR was established. Internal and external validation evaluation of the nomogram prediction model were conducted by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and plotting calibration curves. Results: Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that Ki-67 index, number of axillary lymph node metastases, breast pCR, axillary pCR, and ISLN size after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were associated with ispCR of breast cancerafter neoadjuvant chemotherapy (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the number of axillary lymph node metastases (OR=5.035, 95%CI: 1.722-14.721, P=0.003), breast pCR (OR=4.662, 95%CI: 1.456-14.922, P=0.010) and ISLN size after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (OR=4.231, 95%CI: 1.194-14.985, P=0.025) were independent predictors of ispCR of breast cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. A nomogram prediction model of ispCR of breast cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy was constructed using five factors: number of axillary lymph node metastases, Ki-67 index, breast pCR, axillary pCR and size of ISLN after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The areas under the ROC curve for the nomogram prediction model in the training and validation sets were 0.855 and 0.838, respectively, and the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.755). The 3-year disease-free survival rates of patients in the ispCR and non-ispCR groups after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were 64.3% and 54.8%, respectively, with statistically significant differences (P=0.024), the 3-year overall survival rates were 83.8% and 70.2%, respectively, without statistically significant difference (P=0.087). Conclusions: Disease free survival is significantly improved in breast cancer patients with ispCR after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The constructed nomogram prediction model of ispCR of breast cancer patients after neoadjuvant chemotherapy is well fitted. Application of this prediction model can assist the development of local management strategies for the ipsilateral supraclavicular region after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and predict the long-term prognosis of breast cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer patients with ipsilateral supraclavicular lymph node metastasis (ISLNM) but without distant metastasis are considered to have a poor prognosis. This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the overall survival (OS) of breast cancer patients with ISLNM but without distant metastasis. METHODS: Medical records of breast cancer patients who received surgical treatment at the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Jiyuan People's Hospital and Huaxian People's Hospital between December 21, 2012 and June 30, 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Overall, 345 patients with pathologically confirmed ISLNM and without evidence of distant metastasis were identified. They were further randomized 2:1 and divided into training (n = 231) and validation (n = 114) cohorts. A nomogram to predict the probability of OS was constructed based on clinicopathologic variables identified by the univariable and multivariable analyses. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability were measured by calibration plots, concordance index (C-index), and risk group stratification. RESULTS: Univariable analysis showed that estrogen receptor-positive (ER+), progesterone receptor-positive (PR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive (HER2+) with Herceptin treatment, and a low axillary lymph node ratio (ALNR) were prognostic factors for better OS. PR+, HER2+ with Herceptin treatment, and a low ALNR remained independent prognostic factors for better OS on multivariable analysis. These variables were incorporated into a nomogram to predict the 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS of breast cancer patients with ISLNM. The C-indexes of the nomogram were 0.737 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.660-0.813) and 0.759 (95% CI: 0.636-0.881) for the training and the validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration plots presented excellent agreement between the nomogram prediction and actual observation for 3 and 5 years, but not 1 year, OS in both the cohorts. The nomogram was also able to stratify patients into different risk groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we established and validated a novel nomogram for predicting survival of patients with ISLNM. This nomogram may, to some extent, allow clinicians to more accurately estimate prognosis and to make personalized therapeutic decisions for individual patients with ISLNM.

ABSTRACT

In view of the limitations of the existing moxibustion instruments, i.e. possible accidental injury when using moxibustion instruments, the negative effects of products from moxibustion instruments on treatment efficacy and health of medical staff and patients, a moxibustion instrument with multi-jointed manipulator is designed. This moxibustion instrument could accurately control the temperature, maintain a safe moxibustion distance, automatically process the burning ashes of moxa and selectively handle moxa smoke. The experimental results shows that this instrument could maintain the constant temperature of target acupoint, reduce the risk of empyrosis, and reasonably deal with the products of moxibustion. The purification rate of moxa smoke is 44.9%, which not only ensures the therapeutic effect of moxa smoke, but also reduces the negative effects of high-concentration moxa smoke on the health of medical staff and patients.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the incidence rate of andrological diseases has shown a significant growth trend. Considering the unavailability of a perfect theoretical system for andrology in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the complex pathogenesis despite of the limited types of andrological diseases, it is necessary to improve the clinical efficacy of andrological diseases so as to satisfy the needs of patients. Therefore, the China Association of Chinese Medicine (CACM) organized the andrologists of TCM and western medicine and the outstanding young clinicians to discuss the andrological diseases responding specifically to TCM or integrated TCM and western medicine, such as chronic prostatitis, male infertility, benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation, determine their diagnostic criteria in western medicine, and standardize the specifications for TCM diagnosis and treatment based on syndrome differentiation, thus formulating recognized and integrated diagnosis and treatment protocols. Apart from proposing suggestions on the treatment of such andrological diseases with TCM and western medicine, the experts have also figured out the andrological diseases responding specifically to TCM, the optimal intervention time of TCM and western medicine, and the suitable measures including surgery. The resulting consensus helps to better guide the formulation of accurate, personalized, and optimized treatment plans in clinical practice and improve the diagnosis and treatment effects of andrological diseases by giving full play to the advantages of TCM, which will in turn contribute to further innovation and development of TCM.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To conduct a pilot trial to explore the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion robots in treating primary dysmenorrhea (PD) and evaluate its feasibility in clinic.@*METHODS@#A total of 70 participants with PD were allocated to either moxibustion robot (MR) group (35 cases) or manual moxibustion (MM) group (35 cases) using computer-generated randomization. One acupoint Guanyuan (CV 4) was selected to receive moxa heat stimulation. Two groups of participants were given 3 menstrual cycles of MM and MR treatment respectively (once a day, 5 days a session) and received another 3 menstrual cycles follow-up. The degree of pain was evaluated by short-form McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ) and the symptoms of dysmenorrhea were evaluated by Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale (CMSS). The safety was measured by the occurrence rate of adverse events (AEs), including burns (blisters, red and swollen), itching, bowel changes, menstrual cycle disorder, menorrhagia and fatigue, etc. RESULTS: A total of 62 patients completed the trial, 32 in MR group and 30 in MM group. Compared with baseline, scores of SF-MPQ and CMSS significantly decreased in both groups (P0.05). The total occurrence rate of AEs in MR group was 2.1%, which was significantly lower than MM group (7.2%, P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#MR has the same effect as MM at SF-MPQ and CMSS in patients with PD. However, MR is safer than MM (Trial registration No. ChiCTR1800018236).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has the propensity to lead to venous tumor thrombus (VTT). Nephrectomy with tumor thrombectomy is an effective treatment option but is a technically challenging surgical procedure that is accompanied by a high rate of complications. The aims of this study were to investigate pre-operative imaging parameters for the assessment of inferior vena cava (IVC) wall invasion due to a tumor thrombus in patients with RCC and to identify predictors from the intra-operative findings. METHODS: Clinical and imaging data were collected from 110 patients who underwent nephrectomy with IVC tumor thrombectomy (levels I-IV) for RCC and IVC tumor thrombus at the Peking University Third Hospital between May 2015 and March 2018. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the correlations between pre-operative imaging features and intra-operative macroscopic invasions of the IVC wall by tumor thrombus. RESULTS: Among the 110 patients, 41 underwent partial or segmental resection of IVC. There were univariate associations of pre-operative imaging parameters that could be used to predict the need for IVC resection, including those of the Mayo classification, maximum anterior-posterior (AP) diameter of the renal vein at the renal vein ostium (RVo), maximum AP diameter of the VTT at the RVo and IVC occlusion. For the multivariable analysis, the AP diameter of the VTT at the RVo and IVC occlusion were associated with a significantly increased risk of invasion of the IVC wall by tumor thrombus. The optimum imaging thresholds included an AP diameter of the VTT at the RVo larger than 17.0 mm and the presence of IVC occlusion, with which we predicted invasions of the IVC wall requiring IVC resection. The probabilities of intra-operative IVC resection for patients without both independent factors, with an AP diameter of the VTT at the RVo larger than 17.0 mm, with IVC occlusion, and with both concurrent factors were 5%, 23%, 56%, and 66%, respectively. CONCLUSION: An increase in the AP VTT diameter at the RVo and the presence of complete occlusion of the IVC are independent risk factors for a high probability of IVC wall invasion by tumor thrombus.

ABSTRACT

Traditional moxibustion treatment mainly relies on doctors using specific techniques to stimulate the patient's acupoints with ignited moxa sticks. In view of the poor reproducibility, and different methods of different doctors, difficult to carry out quantitative and qualitative research work in clinical research, a moxibustion mechanical arm was designed. The hardware modules of the mechanical arm are composed of power, micro controller STM32, position servos, moxibustion strip thruster, human-computer interaction panel and sensors; the software parts are composed of main control program and interrupt service program. The use of this moxibustion mechanical arm will enhance the system's multi-task adaptability and could perform a variety of moxibustion methods including circling moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion. The data collected in real time will be transmitted to PC through bluetooth, displayed on OLED, and the system operation modes could be switched by button. Clinical trials showed that moxibustion mechanical arm had the same treatment effects with traditional moxibustion. Meanwhile, its convenience of ope-ration, repeatability of treatment, doctors and patients's treatment experience are all better than those of traditional moxibustion.

ABSTRACT

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common acute abdominal disease characterized by pancreatic aseptic inflammation, with ~20% of patients progressing to severe AP (SAP) with a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to explore the protective effects of Pim-3 proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase (Pim-3) on rat pancreatic acinar AR4-2J cells damaged by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The recombinant plasmid p-enhanced green fluorescent protein (pEGFP)-N2/Pim-3 was transiently transfected into AR42J cells and the AR42J cells were then treated with 2 µg/ml LPS. Subsequently, the proliferation of AR42J cells was detected using MTT assay. The cell cycle progression and apoptosis rate of the AR42J cells were examined using flow cytometry. AR42J cell migration was assessed using wound healing assays. Additionally, RT-semi quantitative PCR and western blot analyses were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression levels, respectively, of Pim-3, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1ß, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 and Occludin in AR42J cells. The results revealed that proliferation of AR42J cells was significantly enhanced and cell apoptosis was markedly reduced in the pEGFP-N2/Pim-3 + LPS group. The proportion of AR42J cells in G1 phase in the pEGFP-N2/Pim-3 + LPS group was decreased, whereas the proportion of cells in the G2 and S phases was increased. The wound healing assays demonstrated that AR42J cell migration was significantly increased in the pEGFP-N2/Pim-3 + LPS group. Finally, the expression levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α and ICAM-1 were significantly decreased in the pEGFP-N2/Pim-3 + LPS group, whereas the expression of Occludin was significantly increased. The present study demonstrated that raised expression levels of Pim-3 can protect AR42J cells from LPS-induced injury by modifying the inflammatory microenvironment, suggesting that Pim-3 may be a potential target for AP or SAP therapy.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare the effects between crude and processed Epimedii Folium on the rats of kidney-Yang deficiency and edema, in order to discuss the mechanism. Method: The rat model of kidney-Yang edema was duplicated with hydrocortisone and doxorubicin hydrochloride. At day 1 and day 8 of modeling, the rats were injected with doxorubicin hydrochloride (3.5 mg·kg-1) via tail vein, while being intraperitoneally injected with hydrocortisone (3.75 mg·kg-1·d-1) for 15 days. After modeling, the rats were divided into model group, crude Epimedii Folium group(204.86 mg·kg-1)and processed Epimedii Folium group(204.86 mg·kg-1), and a normal control group was set up additionally.Rats in each treatment group were given the corresponding drugs, and those in normal and model groups were given the same volume of normal saline by gavage for continuous 14 days.At the end of the administration,24 h urine was measured by rat metabolic cage method; 24 h urinary protein was detected by ultraviolet spectrophotometry; the content of plasma albumin (ALB) and total serum protein (TP) were measured by an automatic biochemical analyzer; and the content of adenosine monophosphate was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), serum creatinine (SCr), serum urea(BUN), estradiol (E2), testosterone (T) indicator content were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Kidney tissues were collected to make pathological section by htoxylin eosin(HE) staining. Result: Compared with the normal group, all the indicators of appearance, biochemistry and pathological section in the model group indicated kidney Yang deficiency edema in the rats (PP2, T indicators to varying degrees(PPP2, T (PPP3, T4 and anal temperature (PPConclusion: Both crude Epimedii Folium group and processed Epimedii Folium group have certain effect in treating kidney Yang deficiency edema, and the possible mechanism is to alleviate glomerular podocyte injury induced by doxorubicin. Their emphasis in the treatment of kidney Yang deficiency edema is different. Crude Epimedii Folium has a cold property, and can treat kidney Yang deficiency edema by strengthening renal excretion function of rats with kidney Yang deficiency edema. Processed Epimedii Folium is processed with sheep oil to produce icariin and other substances, and its property changed from cold to warm, with a focus on alleviating the kidney Yang deficiency status of rats with kidney Yang deficiency edema.
