ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the influence of air pollution on irrational behaviors in stock trading through behavioral experiments in laboratory, simulating air pollution by burning straw and mosquito coils. The results of this study show that air pollution significantly improves disposition effect and repurchase effect in an asymmetric way, which are thought as irrational behaviors in stock investments, making subjects prefer selling winning stocks (part of disposition effect) and repurchasing stocks that have fallen in price since the sale (part of repurchase effect). Furthermore, regret, a negative emotion, is the psychological mechanism by which air pollution influences the irrational behaviors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) followed by MRI-targeted prostate biopsy is the current standard for diagnosing prostate cancer (PCa). However, studies evaluating the value of biomarkers, including prostate health index (PHI) and its derivatives using this method are limited. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of PHI density (PHID) in guiding MRI-targeted prostate biopsies to identify clinically significant prostate cancers (csPCa). METHODS: The multicenter prospectively registered prostate biopsy database from three medical centers in Taiwan included patients with PHI and MRI targeted and/or systematic prostate biopsies. We assessed the required values of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), prostate volume, PHI, PHID, and Prostate Imaging Reporting & Data System (PI-RADS) score using multivariable analyses, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and decision curve analyses (DCA). csPCa was defined as the International Society of Urological Pathology Gleason group ≥2 PCa, with an emphasis on reducing unwarranted biopsies. RESULTS: The study cohort comprised 420 individuals. Diagnoses of PCa and csPCa were confirmed in 62.4% and 47.9% of the participants, respectively. The csPCa diagnosis rates were increased with increasing PI-RADS scores (20.5%, 44.2%, and 73.1% for scores 3, 4, and 5, respectively). Independent predictors for csPCa detection included PHI, prostate volume, and PI-RADS scores of 4 and 5 in multivariable analyses. The area under the curve (AUC) for csPCa of PHID (0.815) or PHI (0.788) was superior to that of PSA density (0.746) and PSA (0.635) in the entire cohort, and the superiority of PHID (0.758) was observed in PI-RADS 3 lesions. DCA revealed that PHID achieved the best net clinical benefit in PI-RADS 3-5 and 4/5 cases. Among PI-RADS 3 lesions, cutoff values of PHID 0.70 and 0.43 could eliminate 51.8% and 30.4% of omitted biopsies, respectively. CONCLUSION: PHI-derived biomarkers, including PHID, performed better than other PSA-derived biomarkers in diagnosing PCa in MRI detected lesions.

ABSTRACT

Dynamic polyimines are a class of fascinating dynamic polymers with recyclability and reparability owing to their reversible Schiff-base reactions. However, balancing the dynamic properties and mechanical strength of dynamic polyimines presents a major challenge due to the dissociative and associative nature of the imine bonds. Herein, we introduced bulky fluorene groups and polyether amine into the skeleton of polyimine networks to achieve a tradeoff in comprehensive properties. The resulting dynamic polyimines with fluorene groups (Cardo-DPIs) were successfully synthesized by combining the rigid diamine 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl)fluorene and the flexible polyether amine, demonstrating a high tensile strength of 64.7 MPa. Additionally, Cardo-DPIs films with more content of rigid fluorene groups exhibited higher water resistance, glass transition temperature and wear-resisting ability. Moreover, the Cardo-DPIs films not only efficiently underwent thermal reshaping, but also exhibited excellent self-healing capabilities and chemical degradation in acidic solutions. Furthermore, the resulting films can achieve fully closed-loop recovery by free amine solution for 2 h at room temperature. This study broadens the scope of dynamic polyimine materials and promotes the balanced development of their functional and mechanical properties.

ABSTRACT

HCC, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma, is a frequently occurring form of cancer with an unfavorable prognosis. This research constructed a prognostic signature related to ubiquitination and investigated its correlation with the response to immunotherapy in HCC. The Molecular Signatures Database provided a compilation of genes associated with ubiquitination. A gene signature related to ubiquitination was obtained through Cox regression using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator method. The genetic factors CPY26B1, MCM10, SPINK4, and TRIM54 notably impacted the outcomes of HCC. The patients were divided into two groups: one group had a high risk of poor survival while the other had a low risk but a greater chance of controlling HCC progression. Both univariate and multivariate analyses using Cox regression found the risk score to be an independent predictor of HCC prognosis. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) indicated enrichment in cell cycle and cancer-related microRNAs in high-risk groups. The tumor microenvironment (TME), response to immunotherapy, and effectiveness of chemotherapy medications positively correlated with the risk score. In the high-risk group, erlotinib showed higher IC50 values compared to the low-risk group which exhibited higher IC50 values for VX-11e, AKT inhibitor VIII, AT-7519, BMS345541, Bortezomib, CP466722, FMK, and JNK-9L. The results of RT-qPCR revealed that the expression of four UEGs was higher in tumor tissue as compared to normal tissue. Based on the genes that were expressed differently and associated with ubiquitination-related tumor categorization, we have developed a pattern of four genes and a strong nomogram that can predict the prognosis of HCC, which could be useful in identifying and managing HCC.

ABSTRACT

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a diverse class of carbohydrates which support the health and development of infants. The vast health benefits of HMOs have made them a commercial target for microbial production; however, producing the approximately 200 structurally diverse HMOs at scale has proved difficult. Here we produce a diversity of HMOs by leveraging the robust carbohydrate anabolism of plants. This diversity includes high-value and complex HMOs, such as lacto-N-fucopentaose I. HMOs produced in transgenic plants provided strong bifidogenic properties, indicating their ability to serve as a prebiotic supplement with potential applications in adult and infant health. Technoeconomic analyses demonstrate that producing HMOs in plants provides a path to the large-scale production of specific HMOs at lower prices than microbial production platforms. Our work demonstrates the promise in leveraging plants for the low-cost and sustainable production of HMOs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Several medicinal plant extracts have demonstrated hepatoprotective effects. However, data are scarce regarding their combined effects on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aimed to investigate the effects of tablets containing Silybum marianum, Pueraria lobata, and Salvia miltiorrhiza (SPS) on NAFLD progression in Chinese adults. METHODS: In this randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 121 NAFLD patients (60 female and 61 male), diagnosed via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and aged 18-65 years, were enrolled. Participants were randomly allocated to receive SPS tablets (n = 60; three tablets per dose, twice daily) or placebo (n = 61) for 24 weeks. Each SPS tablet contained approximately 23.0 mg of silybin, 11.4 mg of puerarin, and 10.9 mg of salvianolic acid. There were no differences in appearance, taste and odour between the SPS tablets and placebo manufactured by BYHEALTH Co., LTD (Guangzhou, China). The primary endpoints were changes in the liver fat content (LFC) and steatosis grade from baseline to 24 weeks. Secondary outcomes included changes in biomarkers/scores of liver fibrosis and steatosis, oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, alcohol metabolism, and glucose metabolism. RESULTS: A total of 112 participants completed the research. The intention-to-treat results showed a trend toward reduction in both absolute LFC (-0.52%) and percentage of LFC (-4.57%) in the SPS group compared to the placebo group after 24 weeks, but these changes didn't reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). The SPS intervention (vs. placebo) significantly decreased hypersensitive C-reactive protein level (-6.76%) and increased aldehyde dehydrogenase activity (+18.1%) at 24 weeks post-intervention (all p < 0.05). Per-protocol analysis further supported these effects. This trial is registered at Clinical Trials.gov (NCT05076058). CONCLUSION: SPS supplementation may have potential benefits in improving NAFLD, but further larger-scale trials are necessary to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a prevalent issue in aged care facilities (RACFs), leading to adverse health outcomes. The ability to efficiently extract key clinical information from a large volume of data in electronic health records (EHR) can improve understanding about the extent of the problem and developing effective interventions. This research aimed to test the efficacy of zero-shot prompt engineering applied to generative artificial intelligence (AI) models on their own and in combination with retrieval augmented generation (RAG), for the automating tasks of summarizing both structured and unstructured data in EHR and extracting important malnutrition information. METHODOLOGY: We utilized Llama 2 13B model with zero-shot prompting. The dataset comprises unstructured and structured EHRs related to malnutrition management in 40 Australian RACFs. We employed zero-shot learning to the model alone first, then combined it with RAG to accomplish two tasks: generate structured summaries about the nutritional status of a client and extract key information about malnutrition risk factors. We utilized 25 notes in the first task and 1,399 in the second task. We evaluated the model's output of each task manually against a gold standard dataset. RESULT: The evaluation outcomes indicated that zero-shot learning applied to generative AI model is highly effective in summarizing and extracting information about nutritional status of RACFs' clients. The generated summaries provided concise and accurate representation of the original data with an overall accuracy of 93.25%. The addition of RAG improved the summarization process, leading to a 6% increase and achieving an accuracy of 99.25%. The model also proved its capability in extracting risk factors with an accuracy of 90%. However, adding RAG did not further improve accuracy in this task. Overall, the model has shown a robust performance when information was explicitly stated in the notes; however, it could encounter hallucination limitations, particularly when details were not explicitly provided. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the high performance and limitations of applying zero-shot learning to generative AI models to automatic generation of structured summarization of EHRs data and extracting key clinical information. The inclusion of the RAG approach improved the model performance and mitigated the hallucination problem.

ABSTRACT

Photothermal modulation of neural activity offers a promising approach for understanding brain circuits and developing therapies for neurological disorders. However, the low neuron selectivity and inefficient light-to-heat conversion of existing photothermal nanomaterials significantly limit their potential for neuromodulation. Here, we report that graphdiyne (GDY) can be developed into an efficient neuron-targeted photothermal transducer for in vivo modulation of neuronal activity through rational surface functionalization. We functionalize GDY with polyethylene glycol (PEG) through noncovalent hydrophobic interactions, followed by antibody conjugation to specifically target the temperature-sensitive transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) on the surface of neural cells. The nanotransducer not only exhibits high photothermal conversion efficiency in the near-infrared region but also shows great TRPV1-targeting capability. This enables photothermal activation of TRPV1, leading to neurotransmitter release in cells and modulation of neural firing in living mice. With its precision and selectivity, the GDY-based transducer provides an innovative avenue for understanding brain function and developing therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate an invertible all-optical gate on chip, with the roles of control and signal switchable by slightly adjusting their relative arrival time at the gate. It is based on the quantum Zeno blockade (QZB) driven by sum-frequency generation (SFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate microring resonator. For two nearly identical nanosecond pulses, the later arriving pulse is modulated by the earlier arriving one, resulting in 2.4 and 3.9 power extinction between the two, respectively, when their peak powers are 1 mW and 2 mW, respectively. Our results, while to be improved and enriched, herald a new, to the best of our knowledge, paradigm of logical gates and circuits for exotic applications.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate a single-photon counting Raman spectroscope and benchmark it against conventional and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. For direct comparison without ambiguity, we use the same solutions of Rhodamine 6G and a common optical setup with either a spectrometer or an acousto-optic tunable filter, whereas the surface enhancement is realized with immobilized Ag nanoparticles. Our results find that the single photon counting significantly elevates the detection sensitivity by up to eight orders of magnitude, arriving at a comparable level of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Another significant advantage is with the time-resolving measurement, where we demonstrate time-gated and time-correlated single-photon counting with sub-nanosecond resolution. It offers insights into the samples' transient responses and enables the isolation of Raman scattering from fluorescence signals.

AIM: Animals exhibit physiological changes designed to eliminate the perceived danger, provoking similar symptoms of fever. However, a high-grade fever indicates poor clinical outcomes. Caspase11 (Casp11) is involved in many inflammatory diseases. Whether Casp11 leads to fever remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the role of the preoptic area of the hypothalamus (PO/AH) microglia Casp11 in fever. METHODS: We perform experiments using a rat model of LPS-induced fever. We measure body temperature and explore the functions of peripheral macrophages and PO/AH microglia in fever signaling by ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, macrophage depletion, protein blotting, and RNA-seq. Then, the effects of macrophages on microglia in a hyperthermic environment are observed in vitro. Finally, adeno-associated viruses are used to knockdown or overexpress microglia Casp11 in PO/AH to determine the role of Casp11 in fever. RESULTS: We find peripheral macrophages and PO/AH microglia play important roles in the process of fever, which is proved by macrophage and microglia depletion. By RNA-seq analysis, we find Casp11 expression in PO/AH is significantly increased during fever. Co-culture and conditioned-culture simulate the induction of microglia Casp11 activation by macrophages in a non-contact manner. Microglia Casp11 knockdown decreases body temperature, pyrogenic factors, and inflammasome, and vice versa. CONCLUSION: We report that Casp11 drives fever. Mechanistically, peripheral macrophages transmit immune signals via cytokines to microglia in PO/AH, which activate the Casp11 non-canonical inflammasome. Our findings identify a novel player, the microglia Casp11, in the control of fever, providing an explanation for the transmission and amplification of fever immune signaling.

Manipulating the motion of water droplets on surfaces, which is crucial for various applications, such as microfluidics and heat transfer, presents considerable challenges, primarily due to the significant influence of capillary forces. This effect becomes more pronounced when droplets are in close proximity, often resulting in undesired coalescence. Triboelectrification, which involves charging pure water droplets, is a promising approach to enhance the ability to manipulate water droplets. For effective triboelectrification, charges must accumulate within the droplets; this ensures efficient and sustained droplet manipulation while minimizing dissipation. Low-friction, superhydrophobic, insulating surfaces are ideal for this purpose. However, few studies have explored the application of insulating superhydrophobic surfaces to manipulate droplet motion. In this study, we investigated the behavior of water droplets on insulating superhydrophobic quartz surfaces after triboelectrification. The droplets acquired significant charge when dripped onto a superhydrophobic glass surface. Consequently, these charged droplets exhibited behaviors such as repulsion and acceleration from one another, uphill movement, and rapid long-distance transport to specific positions. These advancements in droplet manipulation techniques hold promise for diverse fields such as microfluidics and heat exchangers.

Grain weight, a key determinant of yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.), is governed primarily by genetic factors, whereas grain chalkiness, a detriment to grain quality, is intertwined with environmental factors such as mineral nutrients. Nitrogen (N) is recognized for its impact on grain chalkiness, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. This study revealed the pivotal role of rice NODULE INCEPTION-LIKE PROTEIN 3 (OsNLP3) in simultaneously regulating grain weight and grain chalkiness. Our investigation showed that the loss of OsNLP3 leads to a reduction in both grain weight and dimension, in contrast to the enhancement observed with OsNLP3 overexpression. OsNLP3 directly suppresses the expression of OsCEP6.1 and OsNF-YA8, which were identified as negative regulators associated with grain weight. Consequently, two novel regulatory modules, OsNLP3-OsCEP6.1 and OsNLP3-OsNF-YA8, were identified as key players in grain weight regulation. Notably, the OsNLP3-OsNF-YA8 module not only augments grain weight but also mitigates grain chalkiness in response to N. This research clarifies the molecular mechanisms orchestrating grain weight through the OsNLP3-OsCEP6.1 and OsNLP3-OsNF-YA8 modules, underscoring the pivotal role of the OsNLP3-OsNF-YA8 module in alleviating grain chalkiness. These findings offer potential targets for concurrently enhancing rice yield and quality.

SWI/SNF-related matrix-associated actin-dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily A member 4 (SMARCA4)-deficient tumors are rare and highly aggressive tumors characterized by a loss of SMARCA4 expression, and SMARCA4-deficient tumors in the adnexal area of the uterus are particularly rare. The present study describes the case of a 64-year-old woman who was admitted to Weifang People's Hospital (Weifang, China) with abdominal distension, and was observed to have a mass with ascites in the adnexal area of the uterus. Based on clinical, imaging and pathological findings, the patient was diagnosed with a SMARCA4-deficient adnexal tumor with ascites. Biopsy of the left and right adnexal lesions was performed, and the patient was administered chemotherapy. After one cycle of bevacizumab, sindilizumab and carboplatin, no further treatment was administered. After biopsy and chemotherapy, the abdominal distension was alleviated and the general condition of the patient was satisfactory. The patient was followed up and died 3 months after treatment. Notably, it is important to avoid misdiagnosing this tumor as other types of adnexal uterine tumors, and morphological and immunohistochemical features may be useful for diagnosing primary SMARCA4-deficient tumors in the adnexal area of the uterus.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chuanminshen violaceum M. L. Sheh & R. H. Shan (CV) is used as a medicine with roots, which have the effects of benefiting the lungs, harmonizing the stomach, resolving phlegm and detoxifying. Polysaccharide is one of its main active components and has various pharmacological activities, but the structural characterization and pharmacological activities of polysaccharide from the stems and leaves parts of CV are still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to investigate the optimal extraction conditions for ultrasound-assisted extraction of polysaccharide from CV stems and leaves, and to carry out preliminary structural analyses, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of the obtained polysaccharide and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ultrasonic-assisted extraction of CV stems and leaves polysaccharides was carried out, and the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extraction process to obtain CV polysaccharides (CVP) under the optimal conditions. Subsequently, we isolated and purified CVP to obtain the homogeneous polysaccharide CVP-AP-I, and evaluated the composition, molecular weight, and structural features of CVP-AP-I using a variety of technical methods. Finally, we tested the pharmacological activity of CVP-AP-Ⅰ in an LPS-induced model of oxidative stress and inflammation in intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) and explored its possible mechanism of action. RESULTS: The crude polysaccharide was obtained under optimal extraction conditions and subsequently isolated and purified to obtain CVP-AP-Ⅰ (35.34 kDa), and the structural characterization indicated that CVP-AP-Ⅰ was mainly composed of galactose, galactose, rhamnose and glucose, which was a typical pectic polysaccharide. In addition, CVP-AP-Ⅰ attenuates LPS-induced inflammation and oxidative stress by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory factor genes and proteins and up-regulating the expression of antioxidant enzyme-related genes and proteins in IPEC-J2, by a mechanism related to the activation of the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the polysaccharide isolated from CV stems and leaves was a pectic polysaccharide with similar pharmacological activities as CV roots, exhibiting strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, suggesting that CV stems and leaves could possess the same traditional efficacy as CV roots, which is expected to be used in the treatment of intestinal diseases.

ABSTRACT

Development of a biotechnological system for rapid degradation of pesticides is important to mitigate the environmental, food security, and health risks that they pose. Degradation of atrazine (ATZ) and isoproturon (IPU) in rice crops promoted by the brassinosteroid (BR) signaling component BRASSINAZOLE RESISTANT4 (OsBZR4) is explored. OsBZR4 is localized in the plasma membrane and nucleus, and is strongly induced by ATZ and IPU exposure. Transgenic rice OsBZR4-overexpression (OE) significantly enhances resistance to ATZ and IPU toxicity, improving growth, and reducing ATZ and IPU accumulation (particularly in grains) in rice crops. Genetic destruction of OsBZR4 (CRISPR/Cas9) increases rice sensitivity and leads to increased accumulation of ATZ and IPU. OE plants promote phase I, II, and III metabolic reactions, and expression of corresponding pesticide degradation genes under ATZ and IPU stress. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS analysis reveals increased relative contents of ATZ and IPU metabolites and conjugates in OE plants, suggesting an increased OsBZR4 expression and consequent detoxification of ATZ and IPU in rice and the environment. The role of OsBZR4 in pesticide degradation is revealed, and its potential application in enhancing plant resistance to pesticides, and facilitating the breakdown of pesticides in rice and the environment, is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Comparison of diagnostic accuracy for commercial hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotyping (Abbott RealTime HCV Genotyping II, Roche Cobas Genotyping) and investigational Abbott HCV Genotype plus RUO assays designed to discriminate genotype (GT)-1a, 1b or 6 in cases of ambiguous GT from the Abbott commercial assay remains limited. 743 HCV-viremic samples were subjected to analysis using Abbott and Roche commercial as well as Abbott HCV Genotype plus RUO assays. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) targeting core region was employed as the reference standard. Diagnostic accuracy was reported as the number of participants (percentages) along with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Using NGS, 741 samples (99.7%) yielded valid genotyping results. The diagnostic accuracies were 97.6% (95% CI: 96.1%-98.5%) and 95.3% (95% CI: 93.4%-96.6%) using Abbott and Roche commercial assays (p = 0.0174). Abbott commercial assay accurately diagnosed HCV GT-6a and 6w, whereas Roche commercial assay accurately diagnosed HCV GT-6a. Both assays demonstrated low accuracies for HCV GT-6b, 6e, 6g, and 6n. Abbott HCV Genotype plus RUO assay discriminated 13 of the 14 samples (92.9%; 95% CI: 64.2%-99.6%) that yielded ambiguous GT. Both assays were capable of diagnosing mixed HCV infections when the minor genotype comprised >8.4% of the viral load. The diagnostic performance of commercial HCV genotyping assays is commendable. Abbott assay demonstrated superior performance compared to Roche assay in diagnosing HCV GT-6. Abbott HCV Genotype plus RUO assay aids in discriminating ambiguous GT. Both commercial assays are proficient in diagnosing mixed HCV infections at a cut-off viral load of 8.4% in minor genotype.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of the extent of peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) on the effectiveness and safety of combined phacoemulsification (PEI), goniosynechialysis (GSL), and goniotomy (GT) in eyes with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and cataract. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included patients diagnosed with PACG and cataract who underwent combined PEI and 120 degrees GSL plus GT (PEI+GSL+GT) between April 2020 and October 2022 at 10 ophthalmic institutes. Eligible patients were divided into three groups based on the extent of PAS: 180°≤PAS<270°, 270°≤PAS<360°, and PAS=360°. Data on intraocular pressure (IOP), the number of ocular hypotensive medications, and complications were collected and compared. The study defined complete success as postoperative IOP within the 6-18 mmHg range and a 20% reduction from baseline without the use of topical medications. Qualified success was defined in the same way as complete success, but it allowed for the use of ocular hypotensive medications. RESULTS: Three hundred and four eyes of 283 patients were included. The mean follow-up was 12.50±1.24 months. All groups experienced a significant reduction in IOP after the surgery (P <0.05). There were no significant differences in final IOP, number of medications, and cumulative complete and qualified success rates among the three groups (P >0.05). The groups with 270°≤PAS<360°had a higher frequency of hyphema compared to 180°≤PAS<270° (P = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: PEI+GSL+GT has proven to be an effective treatment for PACG with cataract over one year period. However, the outcome was not correlated with preoperative extent of PAS. PRCIS: The combination of phacoemulsification, goniosynechialysis and goniotomy is an effective treatment for primary angle-closure glaucoma patients with cataract, and this is not linked to the extent of preoperative peripheral anterior synechiae.

ABSTRACT

Carthami Flos(flowers of Carthamus tinctorius) with the effects of activating blood, dredging meridians, dissipating stasis, and relieving pain is one of the commonly used traditional Chinese medicines for promoting blood circulation and resolving stasis in clinical practice. So far, more than 210 compounds in Carthami Flos have been isolated and reported, including quinochalcones(safflower yellow pigments and red pigments), flavonoids, spermidines, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, and organic acids. Safflower yellow pigments, as the main water-soluble active components of Carthami Flos, is commonly obtained by the water extraction method, while red pigments are commonly obtained by the alkali extraction and acid precipitation method. In recent years, natural deep eutectic solvents as green solvents have demonstrated promising application prospects in the extraction and separation of pigments from Carthami Flos. This review systematically summarizes the chemical constituents of Carthami Flos and analyzes the extraction process of pigment components from Carthami Flos, aiming to provide a reference for further utilization of Carthami Flos resources.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The human cerebellum emerges as a posterior brain structure integrating neural networks for sensorimotor, cognitive, and emotional processing across the lifespan. Developmental studies of the cerebellar anatomy and function are scant. We examine age-dependent MRI morphometry of the anterior cerebellar vermis, lobules I-V and posterior neocortical lobules VI-VII and their relationship to sensorimotor and cognitive functions. METHODS: Typically developing children (TDC; n=38; age 9-15) and healthy adults (HAC; n=31; 18-40) participated in high-resolution MRI. Rigorous anatomically informed morphometry of the vermis lobules I-V and VI-VII and total brain volume (TBV) employed manual segmentation computer-assisted FreeSurfer Image Analysis Program [http://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu]. The neuropsychological scores (WASI-II) were normalized and related to volumes of anterior, posterior vermis, and TBV. RESULTS: TBVs were age independent. Volumes of I-V and VI-VII were significantly reduced in TDC. The ratio of VI-VII to I-V (∼60%) was stable across age-groups; I-V correlated with visual-spatial-motor skills; VI-VII with verbal, visual-abstract and FSIQ. CONCLUSIONS: In TDC neither anterior I-V nor posterior VI-VII vermis attained adult volumes. The "inverted U" developmental trajectory of gray matter peaking in adolescence does not explain this finding. The hypothesis of protracted development of oligodendrocyte/myelination is suggested as a contributor to TDC's lower cerebellar vermis volumes.
