ABSTRACT

Importance: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limiting and inflammatory thyroid disease. Although SAT usually improves on its own within weeks, it needs treatment when patients have pain, fever, and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis. Therapeutic drugs mainly include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids. Currently, there is no systematic review or meta-analysis of the comparison of outcomes between NSAIDs and glucocorticoids for the treatment of SAT. Objectives: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the outcomes in subacute thyroiditis patients treated with glucocorticoids or NSAIDs. Data sources: Using the four electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Wanfang database and Web of Science. All publications until 21 June 2023 were searched. The reference lists of all selected articles were independently screened to identify additional studies left out in the initial search. Study selection: The literature comparing outcomes between glucocorticoids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with subacute thyroiditis will be included. Data extraction and synthesis: Two independent investigators (Anqi Yuan and Jialu Wu) extracted the data following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines (PRISMA) and then evaluated the quality of the eligible studies with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Fixed-effects models for the meta-analyses were applied. Heterogeneity was assessed with the chi-squared (x²) test (Cochran's Q) and inconsistency index (I²). The robustness of the results was tested with the sensitivity analyses. The bias of publication was assessed with the Harbord test. Main outcomes and measures: The incidence of permanent hypothyroidism in SAT patients treated with corticosteroids or NSAIDs. Results: Our study included a total of ten comparative cohort studies with 1337 participants. We found that the incidence of developing permanent hypothyroidism in the SAT patients who received glucocorticoids treatment was significantly lower than those who received NSAIDs treatment. (OR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.36-0.88; P = 0.01). The risk of permanent hypothyroidism in patients who received prednisone at an average initial dose < 40 mg/d was significantly lower than that in patients who received NSAIDs (OR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.14-0.94; P = 0.04). There was no significant difference in the occurrence of permanent hypothyroidism between SAT patients who received an average initial dose ≥ 40 mg/d of prednisone and those who received only NSAIDs (OR, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.14-3.53; P = 0.67). In addition, the recurrence rate was observably higher in those receiving glucocorticoids than in those receiving NSAIDs (OR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.12-3.5; p = 0.02). The recurrence rate was significantly higher in patients with an average initial prednisone dose of < 40 mg/d than in the NSAIDs group. There was no significant difference in the recurrence rate between patients in the mean initial prednisone dose ≥ 40 mg/d group and those in the NSAIDs group. Conclusions and relevance: In this meta-analysis, we compared the treatment outcomes of SAT patients between glucocorticoids and NSAIDs. Our results indicated that glucocorticoid treatment was associated with a lower incidence of permanent hypothyroidism than NSAID treatment. Patients treated with NSAIDs might have a lower recurrence rate. This finding might help to understand the outcome of the disease when choosing different drugs and help physicians to make appropriate decisions. ABSTRACT

Essential oils have unique functional properties, but their environmental sensitivity and poor water solubility limit their applications. Therefore, we encapsulated oregano essential oil (OEO) in chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and used tripolyphosphate (TPP) as a cross-linking agent to produce oregano essential oil chitosan nanoparticles (OEO-CSNPs). The optimized conditions obtained using the Box-Behnken design were: a chitosan concentration of 1.63 mg/mL, TPP concentration of 1.27 mg/mL, and OEO concentration of 0.30%. The OEO-CSNPs had a particle size of 182.77 ± 4.83 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.26 ± 0.01, a zeta potential of 40.53 ± 0.86 mV, and an encapsulation efficiency of 92.90%. The success of OEO encapsulation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that the OEO-CSNPs had a regular distribution and spherical shape. The in vitro release profile at pH = 7.4 showed an initial burst release followed by a sustained release of OEO. The antibacterial activity of OEO before and after encapsulation was measured using the agar disk diffusion method. In conclusion, OEO can be used as an antibacterial agent in future food processing and packaging applications because of its high biological activity and excellent stability when encapsulated.

This study evaluated the pasteurization (P), ozone (O3), ultrasonic (US), and high-hydrostatic-pressure (HHP) sterilization approaches for processing of Prunus mume regarding browning factors and microorganisms, compared with non-sterilization (control check, CK) treatment. The microorganisms (total bacterial count and fungi and yeast count) in the juice were identified after different sterilization techniques, while the quality parameter changes (degree of browning, color measurements, total phenolic content, reducing sugar, ascorbic acid, 5-hydroxymethyl furaldehyde (5-HMF), amino acid nitrogen, total soluble solids (TSS), pH value) were investigated. The results indicate that P and HHP treatment reduced non-enzymatic browning while substantially impacting the color measurements, TSS, and pH, while the sterilization effect was remarkable, with a rate exceeding 90%. Furthermore, the Prunus mume juices treated with P and HHP sterilization were used as the objects, and the CK group was used as the control group. They were placed at 4 °C, 25 °C and 37 °C, respectively, and stored in dark for 15 d. Sampling and determination were carried out on 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 d, respectively. M-&-Y (molds and yeasts) were not detected in the late storage period, and no obvious microbial growth was observed during storage, indicating that P and HHP treatments could ensure the microbial safety of Prunus mume juice. P- and HHP- treated Prunus mume juice has better quality and low temperature storage is beneficial for maintaining the quality of Prunus mume juice. Therefore, P treatment or HHP treatment combined with low temperature storage could achieve a more ideal storage effect. Overall, this study conclusively established that P and HHP methods were suitable for sterilizing Prunus mume juice. These techniques minimally affected overall product quality while better maintaining the quality parameters than the untreated juice samples and those exposed to O3 and US treatment.

ABSTRACT

Phenols were extracted from the Pleioblastus amarus (Keng) shell (PAS) using ethanol. A Plackett-Burman assessment indicated that the factors affecting polyphenol extraction included the ethanol concentration, extraction temperature, liquid to solid ratio, extraction time, and reflux extraction times; the best extraction parameters were the ethanol concentration of 75%, a 20:1 liquid to solid ratio, and an extraction time of 2.1 h. The number of polyphenols was 7.216 mg/g. Furthermore, the phenol composition analysis showed the presence of p-Coumaric acid (196.88 mg /mL) and rutin (312.9 mg /mL), which were used for the in vitro extraction and determination of the antioxidant activity. According to the A, B, C, and D antioxidant activity assays, the ethyl acetate phase was the strongest with low IC50 values of 0.169 ± 0.01 mg/mL, 0.289 ± 0.01 mg/mL, 0.372 ± 0.01 mg/mL, and 1.029 ± 0.03 mg/mL, respectively, confirming high antioxidant activity. For the n-butanol and petroleum ether phases, antioxidant activity was lower. This study showed that the polyphenol extract from Pleioblastus amarus (Keng) shell displayed excellent antioxidant activity, enhancing its practical application.

ABSTRACT

Soil freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) change soil physical, chemical, and biological properties, however information regarding their vertical variations in response to FTCs is limited. In this work, black soil (silty loam) packed soil columns were exposed to 8 FTCs, and soil properties were determined for each of vertical layer of soil columns. The results revealed that after FTCs treatment, moisture and electrical conductivity (EC) salinity tended to increase in upper soil layers. Increments of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) in top layers (0-10cm) were greater than those in other layers, and increments of water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and decrease of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in middle layers (10-20cm) were greater than those in both ends. Overall, microbial community structure was mainly influenced by soil physical properties (moisture and EC) and chemical properties (pH and WSOC). For bacterial (archaeal) and fungal communities, soil physical properties, chemical properties and their interaction explained 79.73% and 82.66% of total variation, respectively. Our results provided insights into the vertical variation of soil properties caused by FTCs, and such variation had a major impact on the change of structure and composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities.
