ABSTRACT

Soil salinity is a major environmental stress that has been negatively affecting the growth and productivity of rice. However, various salt-resistant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been known to promote plant growth and alleviate the damaging effects of salt stress via mitigating physio-biochemical and molecular characteristics. This study was conducted to examine the salt stress potential of Bacillus strains identified from harsh environments of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau region of China. The Bacillus strains NMTD17, GBSW22, and FZB42 were screened for their response under different salt stress conditions (1, 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 16%). The screening analysis revealed strains NMTD17, GBSW22, and FZB42 to be high-salt tolerant, moderate-salt tolerant, and salt-sensitive, respectively. The NMTD17 strain produced a strong biofilm, followed by GBSW22 and FZB42. The expression of salt stress-related genes in selected strains was also analyzed through qPCR in various salt concentrations. Further, the Bacillus strains were used in pot experiments to study their growth-promoting ability and antioxidant activities at various concentrations (0, 100, 150, and 200 mmol). The analysis of growth-promoting traits in rice exhibited that NMTD17 had a highly significant effect and GSBW22 had a moderately significant effect in comparison with FZB42. The highly resistant strain NMTD17 that stably promoted rice plant growth was further examined for its function in the composition of rhizobacterial communities. The inoculation of NMTD17 increased the relative abundance and richness of rhizobacterial species. These outcomes propose that NMTD17 possesses the potential of PGPR traits, antioxidants enzyme activities, and reshaping the rhizobacterial community that together mitigate the harmful effects of salinity in rice plants.

ABSTRACT

Wastewater monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 allows for early detection and monitoring of COVID-19 burden in communities and can track specific variants of concern. Targeted assays enabled relative proportions of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron and Delta variants to be determined across 30 municipalities covering >75% of the province of Alberta (pop. 4.5M) in Canada, from November 2021 to January 2022. Larger cities like Calgary and Edmonton exhibited a more rapid emergence of Omicron relative to smaller and more remote municipalities. Notable exceptions were Banff, a small international resort town, and Fort McMurray, a more remote northern city with a large fly-in worker population. The integrated wastewater signal revealed that the Omicron variant represented close to 100% of SARS-CoV-2 burden prior to the observed increase in newly diagnosed clinical cases throughout Alberta, which peaked two weeks later. These findings demonstrate that wastewater monitoring offers early and reliable population-level results for establishing the extent and spread of emerging pathogens including SARS-CoV-2 variants.

ABSTRACT

About 50% malignant tumors may develop bone metastasis in advanced stage. Pain, pathological fractures and dysmotility are the main symptoms of patients with bone metastasis. Image-guided physical ablation can obviously relieve pain caused by bone metastasis, whereas imaging-guided bone cementoplasty can enhance bone stability, and has good effect on preventing and treating osteoporosis and pathological fractures. The progress of imaging-guided physical ablation, bone cementoplasty and the combination of two techniques in treatment of bone metastasis were reviewed in this article.

ABSTRACT

Raman imaging yields high specificity and sensitivity when compared to other imaging modalities, mainly due to its fingerprint signature. However, intrinsic Raman signals are weak, thus limiting medical applications of Raman imaging. By adsorbing Raman molecules onto specific nanostructures such as noble metals, Raman signals can be significantly enhanced, termed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Recent years have witnessed great interest in the development of SERS nanoprobes for Raman imaging. Rationally designed SERS nanoprobes have greatly enhanced Raman signals by several orders of magnitude, thus showing great potential for biomedical applications. In this review we elaborate on recent progress in design strategies with emphasis on material properties, modifying factors, and structural parameters.

ABSTRACT

Alcohol liver disease (ALD) is the most common disease resulting in liver injury in the world. Inflammatory response is an important reason for liver injury in ALD. After being absorbed into the intestines, alcohol can increase the amount of intestinal endotoxin which enters the bloodstream through enterohepatic circulation and activates Toll-like receptor 4 in liver Kupffer cells to release inflammatory factors. The inflammatory factors including tumor necrosis factor-α induce liver injury, while interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) protect the liver through regulating inflammatory response. IL-6 can increase the expression of various anti-injury genes in hepatocytes through activating signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), and IL-10 can inhibit liver inflammatory response through activating STAT3 in Kupffer cells. The processes of imbalance and rebalance between proinflammatory factors and anti-inflammatory factors are the development and prognosis of ALD. This article systematically reviews the role of inflammatory factors in the development and progression of ALD from the perspective of inflammatory response.

ABSTRACT

Fish scale, separated during fish mechanical processing, can serve as an additional source of proteins, especially of collagen proteins. To obtain high purity native collagen, it is required to carry out deproteinization and demineralization of fish scales. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the optimal conditions for demineralization of Cyprinus carpio haematopterus scale without loss of collagen content in HCl solution. Here, the demineralization of Cyprinus carpio haematopterus scale was optimized by response surface methodology. The optimum conditions were as follows: extraction time of 95 min, concentration of HCl of 1.0 M, and ratio of material to solution of 1:11. Under these conditions, the experimental yield of demineralization of scales was 92.7 ± 1.32 %, which was well consistent with the value predicted by the model.
