ABSTRACT

We present a space-angle dual multiplexing holographic recording system for realizing single-exposure multi-wavelength optical diffraction tomographic (ODT) imaging. This system is achieved by combining the principle of single-exposure multi-wavelength holographic imaging technique based on angle-division multiplexing with the principle of single-exposure ODT imaging technique based on microlens array multi-angle illuminations and space-division multiplexing. Compared with the existing multi-wavelength ODT imaging methods, it enables the holographic recording of all the diffraction tomography information of a measured specimen at multiple illumination wavelengths in a single camera exposure without any scan mechanism. Using our proposed data processing method, the multi-wavelength three-dimensional (3D) refractive index tomograms of a specimen can be eventually reconstructed from single recorded multiplexing hologram. Experimental results of a static polystyrene bead and a living C. elegans worm demonstrate the feasibility of this system.

ABSTRACT

We present a new, to the best of our knowledge, type of off-axis digital holographic imaging method with a long field of view (FOV). In the method, the pre-magnification recording geometry is realized by a cylindrical lens (CL) or cylindrical beam instead of a conventional objective or spherical beam in traditional off-axis digital holography (DH). At the same time, the reference beam is replaced by a divergent cylindrical beam. Theoretical analysis and experiments have justified that, in off-axis DHs, the adoption of the cylindrical beams can realize a one-dimensional pre-magnification of the object beam only in the off-axis direction to satisfy the bandwidth constraint, and at the same time the FOV of the reconstructed image in the orthogonal direction can remain unaffected. In comparison with existing off-axis DHs, this cylindrical wave-based DH (CWDH) method has a distinct advantage in expanding the FOV of the reconstructed image. The FOV feature of the CWDH makes it especially suitable for applications that require a long FOV such as imaging samples in microfluidic channels.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we report on the preparation and characterization of the planar and ridge optical waveguides in the Er3+-doped germanate glass by combining hydrogen ion implantation and precise diamond blade dicing. The nuclear energy loss and the implantation depth were calculated by the SRIM 2013 software. The refractive index profile was obtained by the reflectivity calculation method. The dark-mode spectrum and the near-field intensity distribution were measured by the prism coupling system and end-face coupling technique, respectively. This work has important reference significance for the development of Er3+-doped germanate glass active devices in the optical communication field.

ABSTRACT

In our work, passively mode-locked and Q-switched Er-doped fiber lasers (EDFLs) based on titanium disulfide (TiS2) as a saturable absorber (SA) were generated successfully. Stable mode-locked pulses centred at 1531.69 nm with the minimum pulse width of 2.36 ps were obtained. By reducing the length of the laser cavity and optimizing the cavity loss, Q-switched operation with a maximum pulse energy of 67.2 nJ and a minimum pulse duration of 2.34 µs was also obtained. Its repetition rate monotonically increased from 13.17 kHz to 48.45 kHz with about a 35 kHz tuning range. Our experiment results fully indicate that TiS2 exhibits excellent nonlinear absorption performance and significant potential in acting as ultra-fast photonics devices.

ABSTRACT

A compact system for single-shot sequential holographic imaging (SSSHI) with high temporal resolution and a large field of view is proposed. In this system, a specially designed sequence pulse train generator with a group of diffractive gratings inserted is adopted to simultaneously generate the probe pulse train and the reference pulse train required for recording a single-shot spatial frequency division multiplexing hologram. The system successfully overcomes the walk-off effect of the ultrashort pulse laser in SSSHI and, hence, effectively avoids the influence of the short coherence of ultrashort pulses on the spatial resolution (or field of view) of SSSHI; the complexity of the system and the difficulty in the precise synchronous alignment of the probe and the reference pulses also can be greatly reduced. An experimental setup of the system was constructed, and a SSSHI of dynamical air plasmas induced by a femtosecond pulse laser is successfully realized.

ABSTRACT

A method for realizing 2D single-shot measurements of birefringence parameters (including both retardation and optic axis orientation) of anisotropic materials using a simple recording setup and an efficient processing algorithm is proposed. The recording setup can be built simply by inserting a circular polarizer and a polarization beam splitter, respectively, in the object path and reference path of a conventional off-axis holographic imaging system, with no need for other adjustments. An algorithm for quantitatively retrieving the birefringence parameters from one single-shot hologram is proposed and demonstrated, in which a new quantity describing the birefringence, called complex birefringence parameter, is introduced, and a set of formulas used to extract the birefringence parameters is derived. Some experimental results are given for demonstrating the feasibility of the method that reveal that the method may provide another effective approach for investigating the birefringence properties of dynamic anisotropic materials, especially the birefringence induced by ultrafast pulse lasers.

ABSTRACT

We propose a quantitative phase imaging system with exact slightly-off-axis configuration and suitable for objects both smaller and larger than the size of the effective recording region of the image sensors. In this system, the object is illuminated by a convergent spherical beam and a specially designed aperture filter is placed on the spatial frequency plane of the object wave; at the same time, a point source emitting from the edge of the aperture is taken as the reference beam, so that the optimal frequency condition for reconstruction of slightly-off-axis digital holograms can be always guaranteed for both large and small objects as well as different magnification (or the field of view) configurations. At the same time, a 1x2 single-mode optical fiber splitter is used for generating the reference and the illumination beams. Benefited from such fiber-based slightly-off-axis design, the proposed system provides a low-cost way to convert a regular microscope into a slightly-off-axis holographic one for microbiological specimens with a high spatial resolution.

ABSTRACT

We propose a double-channel angular-multiplexing polarization holographic imaging system with common-path and off-axis configurations. In the system, its input plane is spatially divided into three windows: an object window and two reference windows, and two orthogonal linear polarizers are attached, respectively, on the two reference windows; a two-dimensional cross grating is inserted between the input and output planes of the system. Thus the object beam passing through the object window and the two orthogonal polarized reference beams passing through the two reference windows can overlap each other at the output plane of the system and form a double-channel angular-multiplexing polarization hologram (DC-AM-PH). Using this system, the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarized components from an object can be recorded and reconstructed by one single-shot DC-AM-PH at the same time. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrated that the system can be used to measure the Jones matrix parameters of polarization-sensitive or birefringent materials.

ABSTRACT

A time-resolved holographic polarization microscopy, based on angular multiplexing holographic technique, is proposed for imaging ultrafast phenomena in polarization-sensitive transparent materials. This method can retrieve and image the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarization components of two sequential vector wavefronts with ultrashort time interval by a single short recording. Some experimental results for imaging the pulse laser induced ultrafast events based on the method are given. It is demonstrated that this technique may provide a potential tool for characterizing ultrafast processes in polarization-sensitive materials, especially in the non-reproducible experiment conditions.

ABSTRACT

A wavefront sensing method based on a spatial light modulator (SLM) and an incremental binary random sampling (IBRS) algorithm is proposed. In this method, the recording setup is built just by a transmittance SLM and an image sensor. The tested wavefront incident to the SLM plane can be quantitatively retrieved from the diffraction intensities of the wavefront passed through the SLM displaying a IBRS pattern. Because only two modulation states (opaque and transparent) of the SLM are used, the method does not need to know the concrete modulation function of the SLM in advance. In addition by introducing the concept of the incremental random sampling into wavefront sensing, the adaptability of phase retrieving based on the diffraction intensities is significantly improved. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has used this concept for the same purpose. Some experimental results are given for demonstrating the feasibility of our method.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the correlations between vessel changes and the histopathologic subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma with pure ground-glass nodule (pGGN) on computed tomography (CT).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Totally 107 patients (116 lesions) with lung adenocarcinomas with pGGN who had undergone curative resection were included. Vessel changes included vascular convergence and/or vessel dilation or distortion within the pGGN. According to the vessel appearances within the pGGN, all patients were categorized into two groups: no change group and change group. Pearson chi-square test was used to analyze the relationships between vessel changes and histopathologic subtypes. Mann-Whitney rank test and t-test were used to identify the relationship of vessels changes with pGGN density and diameter.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Among these 116 pGGNs, there were 21 without vessel changes and 4 with vessel changes in 25 preinvasive lesions; 14 without vessel changes and 15 with vessel changes in 29 minimally invasive adenocacinomas; 16 without vessel changes and 46 with vessel changes in 62 invasive lung adenocarcinomas. There were statistically significant differences of vessel changes (P=0.000) among histopathologic subtypes. The lesion diameter was significantly different between these two groups (P=0.000), while the lesion density showed no significant difference (P=0.826).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Vessel changes may indicate the invasiveness of lung adenocarcinoma with pGGNs and are related with the lesion diameter.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the risk factors of the progression of persistent pure ground-glass nodule (pGGN) and make the risk stratification for pGGN 10 mm or less in diameter. Methods From June 2008 to April 2015,100 patients (108 lesions) with persistent pGGN≤10 mm in diameter were included in this study. Patients were followed up at least 1 year using thin-section computed tomography (CT). Patients' baseline clinical data and CT characteristics of pGGN were compared between progression group (size increased or/and solid component appeared) and non-progression group. Cox regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between clinical data,CT characteristics of pGGN,and lesion progression. The risk indices of lesion progression were calculated according to the results of Cox regression analysis and the relative factors of lung adenocarcinoma in previous studies. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between risk indices and lesion progression. The optimal cutoff value was decided on receiver operating characteristic curve of risk indices and verified for predicting lesion progression. Results Fifteen of 108 lesions showed progression. The mean follow-up duration was (1016.36±486.00) days. There were statistically significant differences of lesion size,air bronchogram,and vessel changes between progression group and non-progression group (P=0.040,P=0.003,P=0.030,respectively).Lesion density (CT value≥-542.5 HU) and air bronchogram were the risk factors of lesion progression (P=0.003,P=0.021,respectively). The optimal cutoff value of total risk indices on predicting lesion progression was 4.25,with the sensitivity of 46.7%,specificity of 89.2%,and consistency of 83.3%. Conclusions CT value ≥-542.5 HU of pGGN and air bronchogram within lesion may predict lesion progression in persistent pGGN 10 mm or less in diameter. A risk index of less than 4.25 often suggests small probability of disease progression and thus a longer follow-up interval is recommended.

ABSTRACT

We proposed an iterative method for phase retrieval and diffractive imaging based on Babinet's principle and complementary random sampling (CRS). We demonstrated that the whole complex amplitude (not sieved) of an object wave can be accurately retrieved from the diffraction intensities of the object wave sampled by a group of binary CRS masks and the diffractive imaging for the object can be realized through a single digital inverse diffraction. Some experimental results are given for the demonstration. Our experimental results reveal that, using CRS, the influence of a binary random sampling mask on the retrieved field can be well eliminated, and the accuracy and efficiency of the phase retrieval can be greatly improved.

ABSTRACT

A simple and practical system for generation of vector beams with arbitrary polarization and complex-amplitude distributions is proposed. The system mainly consists of a scalar computer-generated hologram (CGH), a small-angle birefringent beam splitter (BBS), and a Fourier lens with a filtering aperture (FA). The CGH is placed in front of the Fourier lens. The BBS is inserted between the CGH and the Fourier lens. When the CGH specially designed according to the method described in this Letter is illuminated by a plane beam or a Gaussian beam, a desired vector beam can be obtained through the FA placed at the back focal plane of the Fourier lens. Because no coupling element and half-wave plate are to be placed between the CGH and the BBS, the extinction ratios of both the two orthogonal polarization components for the vector beam can be better than 10(-5) and so high-quality vector beams can be generated.

ABSTRACT

The evolutionary and statistical properties of the optical vortices that exist in random nondiffracting beams (RNDBs) are analyzed. It is found that the phase singularities (PSs) in the RNDBs originate from the zero rings of Bessel beams with the same ring-shaped spatial spectrum structure (but with zero phase fluctuations) as those of the RNDBs provided. It is also found that the average PS density or vortex density is determined by the average duration of the zero rings of the corresponding Bessel function. According to this model, we successfully derived, for the first time to our knowledge, an analytical formula for quantitatively predicting the PS density of the RNDBs. This formula could be helpful for understanding and designing RNDBs in their applications.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To discuss the correlation of pathologic subtypes and immunohistochemical implication with CT features of lung adenocarcinoma 1 cm or less in diameter with focal ground-glass opacity (fGGO).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>CT appearances of 59 patients who underwent curative resection of lung adenocarcinoma ≤ 1 cm with fGGO were analyzed in terms of lesion location, size, density, shape (round, oval, polygonal, irregular), margin (smooth, lobular, spiculated, lobular and spiculated), bubble-like sign, air bronchogram, pleural tag, and tumor-lung interface. Histopathologic subtypes were classified according to International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/ American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society classification of lung adenocarcinoma. Common molecular markers in immunohistochemical study included human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)-1,HER-2,Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and DNA topoisomerase 2Α.Patients' age and lesions' size and density were compared with pathologic subtypes using analysis of variance or nonparametric Wilcoxon tests. Patients' gender, lesion location, shape and margin, bubble-like sign, air bronchogram, pleural tag, and tumor-lung interface were compared with histopathologic subtypes and immunohistochemical implication using ψ² test or Fisher's exact test.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The patients' gender, age, lesion location, shape, air bronchogram, pleural tag, and tumor-lung interface were not significantly different among different histopathologic subtypes (P=0.194, 0.126, 0.609, 0.678, 0.091, 0.374, and 0.339, respectively), whereas the lesion size,density,bubble-like sign, and margin showed significant differences (P=0.028, 0.002, 0.003, 0.046, respectively). The expression of Ki-67 significantly differed among nodules with different shapes(P=0.015). Statistically significant difference also existed between tumor-lung interface and HER-1 expression (P=0.019) and between bubble sign and HER-2 expression (P=0.049).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Of lung adenocarcinoma ≤ 1 cm with fGGO,bubble-like sign occurs more frequently in invasive pulmonary adenocarcinoma and less frequently in atypical adenomatous hyperplasia. In addition, preinvasive lesions (atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and adenocarcinoma in situ) more frequently demonstrates smooth margin,while invasive lesions (minimally invasive adenocarcinoma and invasive pulmonary adenocarcinoma) more frequently demonstrates lobular and spiculated margin. Some CT features are associated with immunohistochemical implication of lung adenocarcinoma ≤ 1 cm with fGGO.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effects of navel-warming therapy on clinical efficacy in patients with yang-deficiency tympanites based on regular treatment of western medication.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred and twenty cases of yang-deficiency tympanites were randomly divided into a navel-warming therapy group and a western medication group, sixty cases in each one. The regular treatment of western medicine was applied in the western medication group, including oral administration of antiviral drug and diuretics as well as intravenous drip of hepatic protector. Based on western medicine treatment, the navel-warming therapy was applied in the navel-warming group. A medical cake was laid on Shenque (CV 8), and then a medical cylinder was placed above the medical cake and ignited. The treatment was given once daily. One month was considered as a treatment session in both groups and totally one session was required. The TCM symptom score, B-ultrasound ascites and temporary use of diuretics before and after treatment were observed in both groups; also the efficacy was evaluated.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The total effective rate was 81.7% (49/60) in the navel-warming therapy group, which was superior to 56.7% (34/60) in the western medication group (P < 0.05). After the treatment, the TCM symptom score and ascites were improved in both groups (all P < 0.05), which was more significant in the navel-warming therapy group (all P < 0.05). The temporary use of diuretics was statistically different between the two groups (P < 0.05), indicating the navel-warming therapy group could obviously reduce or stop the use of diuretics.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Based on regular treatment of western medication, the navel-warming therapy could significantly improve therapeutic efficacy, effectively relieve clinical symptoms and ease ascites.</p>

ABSTRACT

We analyze the diffraction of the picture obtained by the subtraction of two in-line holograms recorded in two planes at distances of z and z+Deltaz apart from the object plane. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the reconstructed field at the object plane is approximately equal to the Laplacian second-order differentiation of the object wave in transverse direction when Deltaz is much smaller than the distance z, that is, the reconstructed image presents a high quality of edge enhancement. We further investigate the dependence of the edge-enhancement quality on the longitudinal differential distance Deltaz and find that the reconstructed images have the sharpest edge-enhancement and high signal-to-noise ratio at the same time only when the value of Deltaz/z lies between 0.7% and 0.9% under our experimental condition. We also construct a criteria function, named the entropy of the image, to automatically focus the edge-enhanced image and demonstrate its adaptability in experiments.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LH-RH) analog in premenopausal patients with advanced or recurrent breast cancer.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>LH-RH analog (enantone 3.75 mg/2 ml) were administered to 28 premenopausal patients with advanced recurrent breast cancer and its efficacy and side effect were observed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The response rate (complete response and partial response) was 42.9%, and after 8 weeks of treatment, the plasma estrogen in all patients decreased to the level of postmenopause. No major adverse events were observed.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>LH-RH analog is effective and safe for premenopausal breast cancer with low adverse reaction and its administration method is easy.</p>
