ABSTRACT

Background: There is a link between cardiovascular diseases and intestinal permeability, but it is not clear. This review aimed to elucidate intestinal permeability in cardiovascular diseases by meta-analysis. Methods: Multidisciplinary electronic databases were searched from the database creation to April 2023. All included studies were assessed for risk of bias according to the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. The heterogeneity of each study was estimated using the I2 statistic, and the data were analyzed using Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 16.0. Results: In total, studies in 13 pieces of literature were included in the quantitative meta-analysis. These studies were conducted among 1,321 subjects mostly older than 48. Patients had higher levels of intestinal permeability markers (lipopolysaccharide, d-lactate, zonulin, serum diamine oxidase, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, intestinal fatty acid binding protein, and melibiose/rhamnose) than controls (standard mean difference SMD = 1.50; 95% CI = 1.31-1.88; p < 0.00001). Similarly, lipopolysaccharide levels were higher in patients than in controls (SMD = 1.61; 95% CI = 1.02-2.21; p < 0.00001); d-lactate levels were higher in patients than in controls (SMD = 1.16; 95% CI = 0.23-2.08; p = 0.01); zonulin levels were higher in patients than in controls (SMD = 1.74; 95% CI = 1.45-2.03; p < 0.00001); serum diamine oxidase levels were higher in patients than in controls (SMD = 2.51; 95% CI = 0.29-4.73; p = 0.03). Conclusion: The results of the meta-analysis verified that the intestinal barrier was damaged and intestinal permeability was increased in patients with cardiovascular diseases. These markers may become a means of the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. ABSTRACT

Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs), as electrochemical energy storage technologies, are advantageous because of their high theoretical specific capacity, lightweightness, zero pollution, safety, inexpensiveness, and abundant resources, which make them recent research hot spots. However, their electrolyte issues significantly limit their commercialization. The electrolyte choices for AIBs are significantly limited, and most of the available choices do not facilitate the three-electron-transfer reaction of Al3+/Al. Thus, this review presents an overview of recent advances in electrolytes, as well as modification strategies for AIBs, to clarify the limitations of existing AIB electrolytes and offer guidance for improving their performances. Furthermore, the advantages as well as limitations and possible solutions for each electrolyte are discussed, after which the future of AIB electrolytes is envisioned.

ABSTRACT

Carthami Flos(flowers of Carthamus tinctorius) with the effects of activating blood, dredging meridians, dissipating stasis, and relieving pain is one of the commonly used traditional Chinese medicines for promoting blood circulation and resolving stasis in clinical practice. So far, more than 210 compounds in Carthami Flos have been isolated and reported, including quinochalcones(safflower yellow pigments and red pigments), flavonoids, spermidines, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, and organic acids. Safflower yellow pigments, as the main water-soluble active components of Carthami Flos, is commonly obtained by the water extraction method, while red pigments are commonly obtained by the alkali extraction and acid precipitation method. In recent years, natural deep eutectic solvents as green solvents have demonstrated promising application prospects in the extraction and separation of pigments from Carthami Flos. This review systematically summarizes the chemical constituents of Carthami Flos and analyzes the extraction process of pigment components from Carthami Flos, aiming to provide a reference for further utilization of Carthami Flos resources.

ABSTRACT

As a well-known classical Chinese medicine prescription, Shengxian Decoction (SXD) has been applied for a century to treat cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary heart disease (CHD), but the potentially effective compounds and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. With ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) and network pharmacology analysis, the potential effective compounds of SXD and their pharmacological mechanisms against CHD were identified and revealed. 57 effective compounds with favorable pharmacokinetic characteristics and biological activities were screened through UPLC-Q-TOF/MS analysis, database and literature mining, interacting with 96 CHD-related targets to support potential synergistic therapeutic actions. Systematic analysis of the PPI network and microarray data further revealed six core targets, including TNF, IL-1ß, IL-6, TP53, VEGFA and PTGS2, which were mainly involved in fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis, lipid and atherosclerosis, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway et al. Moreover, the proposed contribution indexes of effective compounds indicated these compounds, including isoferulic acid, quercetin, calycosin, ferulic acid, kaempferol, calycosin 7-O-glycoside, formononetin, astragaloside IV and saikosaponin D, as the core compounds of SXD. The molecular docking results confirmed that those core compound-target pairs exhibited strong binding energy. Furthermore, we validated that SXD significantly alleviated myocardial tissue injury in CHD rats and reversed H/R-induced decreases in H9c2 cell viability by attenuating the production of TNF, IL-6 and IL-1ß, and reducing cardiomyocyte apoptosis via down-regulating the TP53, caspase3 and cytochrome C mRNA expression levels as well as caspase3, caspase9 and cytochrome C protein expression levels according to RT-qPCR and Western blot results. Our findings explained the pharmacological mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of SXD in the treatment of CHD, and laid a foundation for future basic and clinical research of SXD.

ABSTRACT

Although the gut microbial metabolites exhibit potential effects on coronary heart disease (CHD), the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the active gut microbial metabolites acting on CHD and their potential mechanisms of action were explored through a network pharmacological approach. We collected a total of 208 metabolites from the gutMgene database and 726 overlapping targets from the similarity ensemble approach (SEA) and SwissTargetPrediction (STP) database, and ultimately identified 610 targets relevant to CHD. In conjunction with the gutMGene database, we identified 12 key targets. The targets of exogenous substances were removed, and 10 core targets involved in CHD were eventually retained. The microbiota-metabolites-targets-signalling pathways network analysis revealed that C-type lectin receptor signalling pathway, Lachnospiraceae, Escherichia, mitogen-activated protein kinase 1, prostaglandin-endoperoxidase synthase 2, phenylacetylglutamine and alcoholic acid are notable components of CHD and play important roles in the development of CHD. The results of molecular docking experiments demonstrated that AKT1-glycocholic acid and PTGS2-phenylacetylglutamine complexes may act on C-type lectin receptor signalling pathways. In this study, the key substances and potential mechanisms of gut microbial metabolites were analysed via network pharmacological methods, and a scientific basis and comprehensive idea were provided for the effects of gut microbial metabolites on CHD.

ABSTRACT

Chinese medicine cinobufacini is an extract from the dried skin of Bufo bufo gargarizans Cantor, with active ingredients of bufadienolides and indole alkaloids. With further research and clinical applications, it is found that cinobufacini alone or in combination with other therapeutic methods can play an anti-tumor role by controlling proliferation of tumor cells, promoting apoptosis, inhibiting formation of tumor neovascularization, reversing multidrug resistance, and regulating immune response; it also has the functions of relieving cancer pain and regulating immune function. In this paper, the chemical composition, pharmacological effects, clinical applications, and adverse reactions of cinobufacini are summarized. However, the extraction of monomer components of cinobufacini, the relationship between different mechanisms, and the causes of adverse reactions need to be further studied. Also, high-quality clinical studies should be conducted.

ABSTRACT

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising alternative for large-scale energy storage due to their advantages of environmental protection, low cost, and intrinsic safety. However, the utilization of their full potential is still hindered by the sluggish electrode reaction kinetics, poor structural stability, severe Zn dendrite growth, and narrow electrochemical stability window of the whole battery. Graphene-based materials with excellent physicochemical properties hold great promise for addressing the above challenges foe ZIBs. In this review, the energy storage mechanisms and challenges faced by ZIBs are first discussed. Key issues and recent progress in design strategies for graphene-based materials in optimizing the electrochemical performance of ZIBs (anode, cathode, electrolyte, separator and current collector) are then discussed. Finally, some potential challenges and future research directions of graphene-based materials in high-performance ZIBs are proposed for practical applications.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of leptospirosis in China from 2010 to 2022, so as to provide insights into formulation of the leptospirosis control strategy. Methods All data pertaining to clinically diagnosed cases and confirmed cases of leptospirosis reported in China from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2022 was collected from Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information Management System. The spatial, temporal and population distributions, and report and diagnosis institutions of leptospirosis cases were analyzed using a descriptive epidemiological method. Results A total of 4 559 leptospirosis cases were reported in China from 2010 to 2022, with an annual average number of 351 cases, and the number of reported leptospirosis cases reduced from 679 cases in 2010 to 158 cases in 2018. A total of 4 276 leptospirosis cases were reported in Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province, Guangdong Province, Hunan Province, Fujian Province, Zhejiang Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Anhui Province, Jiangxi Province and Guizhou Province, accounting for 93.79% of the total number of leptospirosis cases in China. The number of leptospirosis cases had recently appeared a remarkable decline in Yunnan Province, while a significant rise was seen in the number of leptospirosis cases in two provinces of Zhejiang and Guangdong. No leptospirosis cases were reported in Henan Province from 2010 to 2020; however, there were 5 cases and 2 cases reported in 2021 and 2022, respectively. There was only one leptospirosis case reported in Shaanxi Province from 2010 to 2017; however, leptospirosis cases were reported in the province for 5 consecutive years since 2018. Leptospirosis cases were reported throughout the year in China from 2010 to 2022, with the peak of incidence found during the period between August and October, and the peak of leptospirosis incidence varied in provinces. A higher number of leptospirosis cases was seen among men than among women, with a male to female ratio of 2.3:1, and the median age of leptospirosis cases was 50 years (interquartile range, 23 years), with the highest proportion of leptospirosis cases reported at ages of 51 to 60 years (23.21%). Among all reported leptospirosis cases, 53.28% were confirmed cases, and the proportion of confirmed cases increased from 35.05% in 2010 to 61.66% in 2022. In addition, there were 67.22% of leptospirosis cases (2 937 cases) reported by comprehensive hospitals, 20.44% (893 cases) by disease control and prevention institutions, 7.23% (316 cases) by grassroots healthcare institutions and 5.10% (223 cases) by other healthcare and medical institutions, and the mortality of reported leptospirosis cases was 1.07% in China from 2010 to 2022, with a higher mortality seen among men than among women (1.39% vs. 0.36%; χ2 = 9.52, P = 0.002). Conclusions The incidence of leptospirosis remained at a low level in China from 2010 to 2022, and southern China was still the main endemic area for leptospirosis. The epidemiological characteristics of leptospirosis cases varied in endemic provinces, and leptospirosis cases had been continued to be reported in Shaanxi and Henan provinces, which should be paid much attention to. Intensified surveillance of leptospirosis, improved diagnosis and treatment capability of leptospirosis cases and leptospirosis control with adaptations to local circumstance are recommended.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the feasibility of constructing the risk index of Echinococcus infection based on the classification of echinococcosis lesions, so as to provide insights into the management of echinococcosis. Methods The imaging data of echinococcosis cases were collected from epidemiological surveys of echinococcosis in China from 2012 to 2016, and the detection of incident echinococcosis cases was captured from the annual echinococcosis prevention and control reports across provinces (autonomous regions) and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in China from 2017 to 2022. After echinococcosis lesions were classified, a risk index of Echinococcus infection was constructed based on the principle of discrete distribution marginal probability and multi-group classification data tests. The correlation between the risk index of Echinococcus infection and the detection of incident echinococcosis cases was evaluated in the provinces (autonomous regions and corps) from 2017 to 2022, and the correlations between the short and medium-term risk indices and between the medium and long-term risk indices of Echinococcus infection were examined using a univariate linear regression model. Results A total of 4 014 echinococcosis cases in China from 2012 to 2016 were included in this study. The short-, medium- and long-term risk indices of E. granulosus infection varied in echinococcosis-endemic provinces (autonomous regions and corps) of China (χ2 = 4.12 to 708.65, all P values < 0.05), with high short- (0.058), medium- (0.137) and long-term risk indices (0.104) in Tibet Autonomous Region, and the short-, medium- and long-term risk indices of E. multilocularis infection varied in echinococcosis-endemic provinces (autonomous regions and corps) of China (χ2 = 6.74 to 122.60, all P values < 0.05), with a high short-term risk index in Sichuan Province (0.016) and high medium- (0.009) and long-term risk indices in Qinghai Province (0.018). There were no significant correlations between the risk index of E. granulosus infection and the detection of incident cystic echinococcosis cases during the study period (t = −0.518 to 2.265, all P values > 0.05), and strong correlations were found between the risk indices of E. multilocularis infection and the detection of incident alveolar echinococcosis cases (including mixed type) in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, during the period from 2017 through 2020, from 2017 through 2021, from 2017 through 2022 (all r values > 0.7, t = 2.521 to 3.692, all P values < 0.05). Linear regression models were established between the risk index of E. multilocular infection and the detection of alveolar echinococcosis cases (including mixed type), and the models were all statistically significant (b = 0.214 to 2.168, t = 2.458 to 3.692, F = 6.044 to 13.629, all P values < 0.05). The regression coefficients for the correlations between the medium- and short-term, and between the long- and medium-term risk indices of E. granulosus infection were 2.339 and 0.765, and the regression coefficients for the correlations between the medium- and short-term, and between the long- and medium-term risk indices of E. multilocular infection were 0.280 and 1.842, with statistical significance seen in both the regression coefficients and regression models (t = 16.479 to 197.304, F = 271.570 to 38 928.860, all P values < 0.05). Conclusions The risk index of Echinococcus infection has been successfully established based on the classification of echinococcosis lesions, which may provide insights into the prevention and control, prediction, diagnosis and treatment, and classified management of echinococcosis.

ABSTRACT

Platycodonis Radix is the dry root of Platycodon grandiflorum of Campanulaceae, which has a variety of pharmacological effects and is a commonly used bulk Chinese medicine. In this study, the chloroplast genome sequences of six P. grandiflorum from different producing areas has been sequenced with Illumina HiSeq X Ten platform. The specific DNA barcodes were screened, and the germplasm resources and genetic diversity were analyzed according to the specific barcodes. The total length of the chloroplast genome of 6 P. grandiflorum samples was 172 260-172 275 bp, and all chloroplast genomes showed a typical circular tetrad structure and encoded 141 genes. The comparative genomics analysis and results of amplification efficiency demonstrated that trnG-UCC and ndhG_ndhF were the potential specific DNA barcodes for identification the germplasm resources of P. grandiflorum. A total of 305 P. grandiflorum samples were collected from 15 production areas in 9 provinces, for which the fragments of trnG-UCC and ndhG_ndhF were amplificated and the sequences were analyzed. The results showed that trnG-UCC and ndhG_ndhF have 5 and 11 mutation sites, respectively, and 5 and 7 haplotypes were identified, respectively. The combined analysis of the two sequences formed 13 haplotypes (named Hap1-Hap13), and Hap4 is the main genotype, followed by Hap1. The unique haplotypes possessed by the three producing areas can be used as DNA molecular tags in this area to distinguish from the germplasm resources of P. grandiflorum from other areas. The haplotype diversity, nucleotide diversity and genetic distance were 0.94, 4.79×10-3 and 0.000 0-0.020 3, respectively, suggesting that the genetic diversity was abundant and intraspecific kinship was relatively close. This study laid a foundation for the identification of P. grandiflorum, the protection and utilization of germplasm resources, and molecular breeding.

ABSTRACT

Analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-entropy weight method(EWM) and network pharmacology were employed to identify the potential quality markers(Q-markers) of Gei Herba. According to the new concept of Q-markers in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), the AHP-EWM was applied to quantitatively identify the Q-markers of Gei Herba. The AHP was used for the weight analysis of primary indicators(factor layer), and the EWM for the analysis of literature and experimental data of secondary indicators(control layer). In addition, network pharmacology was employed to build the "component-target-disease-efficacy" network for Gei Herba, and the components showing strong associations with the Qi-replenishing, spleen-invigorating, blood-tonifying, Yin-nourishing, lung-moistening, and phlegm-resolving effects of Gei Herba were screened out. According to the results of AHP-EWM and network pharmacology, four components, i.e., ellagic acid, gallic acid, gemin G, and gemin C, were finally identified as potential Q-markers of Gei Herba. In this study, the AHP-EWM and network pharmacology were employed to screen the Q-markers of Gei Herba, which provided ideas for the quantitative evaluation and identification of Q-markers of TCM.

ABSTRACT

In the realm of clinical practice, there is currently an insufficiency of distinct biomarkers available for the detection of breast cancer. It is of utmost importance to promptly employ bioinformatics methodologies to investigate prospective biomarkers for breast cancer, with the ultimate goal of achieving early diagnosis of the disease. The initial phase of this investigation involved the identification of 2 breast cancer gene chips meeting the specified criteria within the gene expression omnibus database. Subsequently, paired data analysis was conducted on these datasets, leading to the identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). In addition, this study executed Gene Ontology enrichment analysis and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway enrichment analysis. The subsequent stage involved the construction of a protein-protein interaction network graph using the STRING website and Cytoscape software, facilitating the calculation of Hub genes. Lastly, the UALCAN database and Kaplan-Meier survival plots were utilized to perform differential expression and survival analysis on the selected Hub genes. A total of 733 DEGs were identified from the combined analysis of 2 datasets. Among these DEGs, 441 genes were found to be downregulated, while 292 genes were upregulated. The selected DEGs underwent comprehensive analysis, including gene ontology enrichment analysis, Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway enrichment analysis, and establishing a protein-protein interaction network. As a result, 10 Hub genes closely associated with early diagnosis of breast cancer were identified: PDZ-binding kinase, cell cycle protein A2, cell division cycle-associated protein 8, maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase, nucleolar and spindle-associated protein 1, BIRC5, cell cycle protein B2, hyaluronan-mediated motility receptor, mitotic arrest deficient 2-like 1, and protein regulator of cytokinesis 1. The findings of this study unveiled the significant involvement of the identified 10 Hub genes in facilitating the growth and proliferation of cancer cells, particularly cell cycle protein A2, cell division cycle-associated protein 8, maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase, nucleolar and spindle-associated protein 1, hyaluronan-mediated motility receptor, and protein regulator of cytokinesis 1, which demonstrated a more pronounced connection with the onset and progression of breast cancer. Further analysis through differential expression and survival analysis reaffirmed their strong correlation with the incidence of breast cancer. Consequently, the investigation of these 10 pertinent Hub genes presents novel prospects for potential biomarkers and valuable insights into the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

Chinese rice wine (CRW) is a traditional and unique alcoholic beverage in China, favored by many consumers for its rich aroma, unique taste, and complex ingredients. Its flavor is primarily composed of volatile and nonvolatile compounds. These flavor compounds are partly derived from grains and starters (Qu), while the other part is produced by microbial metabolism and chemical reactions during the brewing process. Additionally, ethyl carbamate (EC) in CRW, a hazardous chemical, necessitates controlling its concentration during brewing. In recent years, numerous new brewing techniques for CRW have emerged. Therefore, this paper aims to collect aroma descriptions and thresholds of flavor compounds in CRW, summarize the relationship between the brewing process of CRW and flavor formation, outline methods for reducing the concentration of EC in the brewing process of CRW, and summarize the four stages (pretreatment of grains, fermentation, sterilization, and aging process) of new techniques. Furthermore, we will compare the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches, with the expectation of providing a valuable reference for improving the quality of CRW.

ABSTRACT

Glycolytic reprogramming is one of the most important features of cancer and plays an integral role in the progression of cancer. In cancer cells, changes in glucose metabolism meet the needs of self-proliferation, angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis, metastasis, and also affect the immune escape, prognosis evaluation and therapeutic effect of cancer. The n6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification of RNA is widespread in eukaryotic cells. Dynamic and reversible m6A modifications are widely involved in the regulation of cancer stem cell renewal and differentiation, tumor therapy resistance, tumor microenvironment, tumor immune escape, and tumor metabolism. Lately, more and more evidences show that m6A modification can affect the glycolysis process of tumors in a variety of ways to regulate the biological behavior of tumors. In this review, we discussed the role of glycolysis in tumor genesis and development, and elaborated in detail the profound impact of m6A modification on different tumor by regulating glycolysis. We believe that m6A modified glycolysis has great significance and potential for tumor treatment.

ABSTRACT

Medical abortion is a common medical procedure that women choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, but it often brings post-abortion complications. Danggui (Angelica sinensis Radix)-Yimucao (Leonuri Herba), as a herbal pair (DY) in clinical prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine, is often used in the treatment of gynecological diseases and has the traditional functions of tonifying the blood, promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and regulating menstruation. In this study, serum lipidomics were adopted to dissect the mechanism of DY in promoting recovery after medical abortion. A total of 152 differential metabolites were screened by lipidomics. All metabolites were imported into MetaboAnalyst for analysis, and finally key metabolic pathways such as glycerophospholipid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism and pentose and glucuronate interconversions were enriched. Our results indicated that metabolic disorders in abortion mice were alleviated by DY through glycerophospholipid metabolism, while prostaglandin and leukotriene metabolites might be the key targets of DY to promote post-abortion recovery.

ABSTRACT

Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an important antioxidant enzyme. Selenocysteine (Sec)-containing GPxs (Sec-GPxs) are usually superior to their conventional cysteine-containing counterparts (Cys-GPxs), which make up the majority of the natural GPxs but display unsuitable activity and stability for industrial applications. This study first heterologously expressed and characterized a Cys-GPx from Lactococcus lactis (LlGPx), systematically exchanged all the three Cys to Sec and introduced an extra Sec. The results showed that the insertion of Sec at the active site could effectively increase the enzyme activity and confer a lower optimal pH value on the mutants. The double mutant C36U/L157U increased by 2.65 times (5.12 U/mg). The thermal stability of the C81U mutant was significantly improved. These results suggest that site-directed Sec incorporation can effectively improve the enzymatic properties of LlGPx, which may be also used for the protein engineering of other industrial enzymes containing catalytic or other functional cysteine residues.

ABSTRACT

This paper uses social identity theory to develop an environmental identity theory and interpret why sustainable leadership can influence environmental identity, which in turn, results in environmental innovation strategy (EIS) adoption. Data were collected from 90 samples of technology manufacturing firms in Taiwan, and a latent growth curve model was employed to analyze the longitudinal data. The research results confirm all hypotheses. Mediating analysis also supports the environmental identity as a mediating role between sustainable leadership and EIS. Indeed, past studies have not explored the mechanism studied in this paper, a novel mechanism which can not only advance the literature on sustainable development but also help companies to realize sustainable development through environmental innovation strategy adoption.
